If time travel ever becomes a real thing and not just a plot device for fiction, many of us would probably go back to our favorite era. In 2013, The Economist and YouGov asked Americans which decade from the 20th century they would most want to time travel to, and the 1950s came in first.

The members of the "Historical Capsule" subreddit also like to travel back in time but through the medium of photographs. Whether it's history as recent as the 2000s or moments from the beginning of the 20th century, see things like Niagara Falls without water or how Tokyo looked before all the skyscrapers right here!

The woman in the photo, Danuta Danielsson (née Seń), was born in March 1947 in Gorzów Wielkopolski, Poland. She had three siblings. Danuta was Jewish. Her mother had survived a German concentration camp in Poland during The H*******t, reportedly in Auschwitz or in Majdanek. She met Björn "Beson" Danielsson at a jazz festival in Poland in 1981. They married in November of the same year in Gorzów, and the couple moved to Sweden in October 1982.

The word that was censored was H o l o c a u s t! I usually don’t correct BP’s censorship but this is ridiculous. I don’t think anybody is going to be triggered by the word H o l o c a u st because the survivors are mostly deceased. So if the advertisers take exception to this word is it because free speech is getting reined in?

LoL, I remember this. Was raised in Växjö and remember this, nªzis were chased by an angry mob of people, they ran and took cover at the train station. The cops had to come and escort them to safety. Some of these nªzis are now in government through the racist party Sverigedemokraterna, a party formed by nªzis and from different nªzi groups. If you don't belive me read about them and their history on the internet, they have tried really hard whitewashing their nªzi background but it should still be there. Check it out for yourself.

Johnny Gray, 15, punches a white student during a scuffle in Little Rock, Arkansas. Johnny and his sister, Mary (standing behind him), were en route to their segregated school when the two whites in the photo ordered them to get off the sidewalk. Racial tension plagued the Little Rock school system for years after court-ordered integration began in 1957. Governor Orval Faubus defied the courts by closing all the public schools in 1958. Another court order reopened them in 1959.

The Democratic Party may have said "No" to Bernie Sanders as a presidential nominee, but the Internet often has nothing but praise for his work, choice of style, and lifelong activism. The photograph that we have in this list is from the 1963 Chicago civil rights protest, where Sanders was arrested for protesting racial segregation.

Sanders was only 21 at the time, but he stood for the same progressive values he stands for today. Documentary maker Gordon Quinn filmed the 1963 protests and even turned them into a film in 2017, titled '63 Boycott

"One hundred and sixty-nine people had been arrested in the summer of '63, and four people were charged, and one of them was Bernard Sanders," Quinn said in 2016. "For a lot of people, Bernie is a tough sell. Not for us. He's saying all the things we believe in."

This picture just reminded me, though the breed is different, of something that happened on a quiz show I watched last night. A contestant got the last question of his round wrong, because he was distracted and didn't hear the question. Not unusual but the reason he was distracted as funny. He had been thinking about how much he liked golden retrievers, because the previous question had mentioned them :) He still won the quiz.

Another political figure on this list is John F. Kennedy. His friendship with Lem Billings has been a topic of speculation, with people on social media (especially TikTok), suggesting they might have been more than friends.

However, historians believe that even if there were romantic feelings, they were one-sided. While Billings might've been infatuated with the future president when both were young boys, JFK never reciprocated. Upon receiving a suggestive note from Billings, he replied: "Please don't write to me on toilet paper any more. I'm not that kind of boy."

Any pyramid scheme that includes some insane dangerous ideas like "The chosen of god and burning in hell if you don't do as the Imam/Rabbai or whatever says" Needs to be considered as a threat to basic human rights... if we dont do something how can we expect anything other than 1000+ more years of this? A lot of people who don't have connections in Israel also probably don't realize that the 10/7 attacks targeted precisely the people who were *most* sympathetic to Palestinian statehood and the two-state solution. If Hamas was trying to make Israelis give up on the idea, they sure succeeded. The people in Kibbutz Be'eri and Kibbutz Nir Oz employed Palestinians from Gaza, drove them to medical appointments in Israel, and even considered some of them friends. Those Palestinians either gave information on the kibbutzim to Hamas voluntarily or were coerced to give it to Hamas so they could more effectively plan their attack, too. The people at the Nova rave were secular leftist hippies. Murdering 800 of them actually m******d a significant fraction of the peaceniks in Israel's general population -- Israel only has 9M citizens, 2M of whom are Arab. 10/7 killed the per capita equivalent of 40,000 Americans. Do you see now why it's a *really big deal* in Israel?

Rabin was a fool - Arafart's pally lies have permitted the infestation of gaza by reeking hordes of antisemitic islamist terrorists. Bill Clinton has since observed wisely that the so called 'palestinians' are just a bunch of terrorists and that they never wanted peace - they only found a weak leader in Rabin who they could take advantage of.

A Rare Example Where An Engineer Thought About The Mechanic. (1950s)

How is the engine connected to the rest of the drivetrain? I hope this doesn’t introduce other points of failure (which don’t slide out that easily).

It did. It was an attempt to "listen to the mechanics", but as we think about ease of maintainance on our own already, nobody needs to force us. But, we might know a little better why such "obvious solutions" often don't work out at all. Like here.

It isn't that rare, quite the opposite - ease of maintainance always is a goal, and often, other features are compromised. But, we have to take into account that there's brilliant mechanics, and there's ... dumb ones. We have to make sure the dumb ones can't cause too much trouble or danger. And, also - an engine sliding out a vehicle is one of those cases where everything else is compromised, and often, that's simply impossible. OTOH, it hardly ever happens that a mechanic takes a second to think again about a feature "that sucks", because it always ends at the assumption that the engineers don't think about them, and is considered gospel truth from there on. I've heard mechanics curse about fourvalve engines because "more valve clearance to adjust", regardless of them being better at literally everything, as compared to a similar twovalve. I've heard them complain about turbochargers because the 20-liter-per-100 drinking, still slow, sad excuse of a maintainance-friendly engine lasted "longer than the turbocharger", which is ... not a good thing - bad engines (and a low efficiency as compared to their class of machinery, makes any and every device a bad one) that only have the advantage of being indestructible and easy to maintain, still, don't perform like the best we can. Ease of maintainance is a second thought, yes, but it's one we never ever skip. But, if you'd have heard the really dumb ones talking, you know you have to make shortcuts impossible rather than make the proper processes easier, because these oh-so-smart ones who always compain about us and the results of our research and work, typically, aren't the ones reading, understanding the maintainance manual, but cut this short as well. Yes, twice the work in adjusting valves IS justified for the increased performance and efficiency of a 4V versus a 2V. Yes, a more efficient engine, in some cases, has flaws, just like the ones they so dearly love. Often, that's totally independent of each other, like a timing chain breaking down in a severely downsized engine, is not connected to the concept and result of said downsizing, but the result of some pennypinchers requiring to select a different chain and gear, in order to cheapen the product, and can rely on prejudice against any and every progress to shift the blame off of them. Them quirky dudes in the lab, always are given the blame. For everything.

One of the best Presidents the US ever had. Of the post-WW2-era, only he and Eisenhower appear somewhat good to me. The times before, of course, I don't know as exact as the 2nd half of the 20th century, but still, that is 50 years during which, together, these two served 12 years as Presidents ... making it 24 % of the time being governed by an acceptable person. And 76 % governed by, at least, the second-best at best. Just look into how they won elections, how they made people believe in a concept not even meant to succeed - trickle-down-economy -, how they accepted any and every ally, even the theocracy-craving evangleistists and CSA-fans are given a voice and influence, in exchange for their votes, and they're the easiest to buy - just oppose abortions, be public about it, and you can grab as many püssies as you want, the biblethumpers who'd disown their own kids for, like, mass turbation or so, still consider them a present of god to the US. Carter was compassionate, smart, honest - something not known to earn you many votes.

You mean why do people care so much what murderers, rapists, and pedophiles do in their private lives? Why should people care that Jeffrey Dahmer killed and ate people in his private home? What other people do affects the entire population. I'm not putting them all in the same category, but if it applies to one category, it applies to all.

photo of a woman whacking a neo-N**i with her handbag perhaps resonates with us just as much, if not more, today than it did in 1985 when the photograph was taken. The moment features a Polish-Swedish woman, Danuta Danielsson, whose mother was reportedly sent to a N**i concentration camp. After seeing the neo-N**i Nordic Reich Party's demonstration, the lady just couldn't contain her irritation, it seems.

I was there to help rescue the pets. The Louisiana governor would not let any veterinarians or the big animal rescues, ASPCA, HSUS, Best Friends, etc. into Louisiana. So from all over the US we came. Some by themselves, some in groups with trucks full of supplies, and we met up with the people that were posting their itinerary online. We were not part of any organization. We just knew we could not let those animals die. Eventually, Best Friends set up across the state border and rescues were sent there for vet care and to be photographed to be put online for people to find their pets. It was eerie. The only people in New Orleans were the National Guard, the Red Cross and the animal rescuers.

You can even learn about different cultures on r/HistoricalCapsule, like in the case of this photograph of a Rwandan man wearing a popular Amasunzu haircut from the 1920s and 1930s. Surprisingly, you can see the haircut today, too. Lupita Nyong'o was rocking a hairstyle inspired by Amasunzu in 2018.

The cover of Tyler, The Creator's 2024 album Chromakopia features a traditional Amasunzu as well. In pre-colonial Rwandan culture, the hairstyle was a sign of a certain social status, power, and wealth.

Re-using flour sacks to make clothes became popular during the depression. When flour companies learned of this, they started making the sacks with prints so the clothes would be nicer. Some even included patterns for dresses or shirts. https://oldtimeyherald.com/articles/amazing-history-of-depression-1930s-flour-sack-dresses

Just to clarify, I am almost certain the house wasn't built of cardboard. Instead, it's likely that the walls were very thin, and cardboard was nailed on the inside as cheap insulation. My grandparents lived in an old farm house where the walls were only 1" thick (and I lived in it for a few years as an adult), which is how I know that.

There's an article in the NYT today (4-15) that explains that the working homeless in the ski resort towns of Colorado are permitted to live out of their cars in designated parking lots PROVIDED they show a pay stub demonstrating that they are working at jobs in the local economy. No paystub, no sleeping in their own cars in the only parking lot set aside for them. They reside there through -8F temps and snowy times & the heat of the summer. The town provides porta potties.

Hoover kind of got a bad rap. He didn’t cause the problems that led to the Great Depression. He underestimated the currency crisis caused by the bank runs. If monetary policy had been more flexible, I believe a much smaller recession would have occurred.

To give a bit of explanations (without justifying anything of course), this park was created in 1994 as a so called a Safari park with performers, singers, dancers, merchants, aim was to recreate an African village. Creator was the owner of a biscuits company, which had a biscuit named after a character 'Bamboula' (stéréotype of a Black man). Performers where supposed to stay for a 6 month period, recruited through Ivory Cost Tourism office. Only a few weeks after it opened, local associations sued the owners over suspicions of mistreatments. It was found that owner kept the passports in a safe, and performers were not paid French minimum wage, but Ivory Coast one. The children of performers were not attending school. Local associations obtained performers to have salary increase, passport back, education for children. But ultimately were still outraged and sued one last time for the closure of the park for offense to one's human dignity. Park was closed a few months after opening.

Not trying to diminish the story. I think it's important to set out the context, as these stories of abuse with colonialist or racist undertone are still existing today, some of which many turn a blind eye on (hello Qatar). Ironically enough 1994 was the inaugural year of a massive exhibition on the Slavery trade in the nearby city of Nantes....

Where are the french people who use to post proud coment when it's about baguette or croissant ? It's a real shame for us , we love to point racisme in USA but in France? Rien à voir , passez votre chemin. The word "Bamboula" is totally a raciste way in France to call black people.

I don't think you should mix everything up, you're not helping the cause. I am French and African. You can be happy about baguettes and croissants without being a racist, for god sake...I was in France in the 90s, we've come a long way since, let's rejoice on that and keep on fighting discriminations. For someone who's been involved in anti racism for 20 years, I suggest you don't spread the lie about the 'nothing to see, keep moving', it is simply not true in 2025.

UK Servicemen and women who were killed in Afghanistan and Iraq were repatriated to RAF Lyneham, and then transported to Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. They passed through a town on the way there, and for every procession that went through, the population of the town stood in an honour guard by the roadside, along with members of the British Legion (retired servicemen). Queen Elizabeth awarded the town Royal status as a way of thanking them for their dedication and the respect they showed to fallen soldiers-Royal Wootten Bassett is one of only 3 towns in the whole country awarded Royal status.

Always always always remember that the photo of Ruby going to school was of her going to school ALONE. Every single white parent at that school withdrew their kids instead of allowing them to go to a school with one brave little black girl. Some of these people threw rocks at her as she walked in. Notice the "States Rights" and pro-Christian signs
