We all get bored at some point. One survey found that the average American adult experiences 131 days of boredom per year. And most of it happens at work. Another study revealed that employees are bored on the job for more than 10 hours per week. But it’s not a bad thing. Scientists say being bored gives our brain a moment to pause, rest and reset. It also creates space to daydream. And that in turn can boost our creativity. Long bouts of boredom could even set us on a different life path, if we end up pondering whether we are adding value to the world or merely wasting our time doing what we do.

Of course, boredom can also lead you to places you might not have gone. And you'll find out things you might not have known before. If you ended up reading this as a result of being bored, your brain could be thanking you in a few minutes' time. We recently came across an Insta page called Facts By Science. It has over 566 thousand followers, and shares super interesting tidbits from around the world.

Keep scrolling for a list of our favorites, and upvote the ones that blew the boredom out of your mind. Don't miss the chat Bored Panda had with media psychologist Dr. Pamela Rutledge about the positives and negatives of using social media to combat boredom.

Things that matter, like providing a tax heaven in the middle of the EU and living off the wealth of neighboring countries by providing a flawless tax evasion solution.

Occasional boredom isn't bad, but according to Psychology Today, frequent boredom can be associated with mental health issues such as anxiety and depression, lower achievement at school or work, and involvement in unhealthy relationships. It can even drive people to indulge in substance abuse, or reckless and antisocial behaviors.

The site defines boredom as a “state of mind characterized by a lack of interest, motivation, and engagement with the world around us,” adding that “when we're bored, we may feel restless, irritable, and unfulfilled. We may also experience physical symptoms like fatigue, lethargy, and a lack of energy.”

Dr. Pamela Rutledge is the director of the Media Psychology Research Center. She describes herself as "a media psychologist: a social scientist who applies expertise in human behavior to media and technology." She's done extensive research on how social media impacts our mental wellbeing, and kindly agreed to share some insights with Bored Panda.

Jackets hung on trees in Turkey and Bulgaria for homeless people, showcasing a heartwarming gesture of kindness.

When I was homeless after coming out to my parents (literally running) at 15, I had the forethought to stash a back pack outside. It had nothing I actually ended up needing in it, and I had zero idea how to find resources. They were in a fringe evangelical culty thing. Things like charity (from anywhere outside the small church they belonged to, or state assistance were not discussed, those things were of "the world" "not of GOD!" Ikr... anyway, I found some clothing in a dumpster, but it wasn't enough. I got lucky, when some gutter-punk (punk rock, but choosing to live by squatting abandoned buildings and dumpstering etc), they showed me better spots. But still it was always stuff that was outside, dirty as hell, and sometimes gave is weird rashes. One day I stumbled across what is the coolest thing I have ever seen for homeless folks. It was a very lightly heated closet type thing. You typed in a code, and the door sprung open. It had coats, hats, scarves, gloves and blankets.

People in other countries do beautiful stuff like this. Here in the US, we make homelessness a crime, and build anti-homeless architecture, so people can't even find a place to sleep. I hate it here sometimes.

Here, in San Francisco CA, we have several shelters for women and children who are victims of domestic violence. You can donate clothing by calling their number, and someone will meet you away from the shelter to maintain privacy for the victims. They give the clothing directly to the people and they don't have to pay for anything. It's better than donating to a large charity who will charge for the clothing.

Doing things that keep you actively engaged can be a good way to beat boredom. "Boredom is an emotion, a natural response to a lack of stimulation," said Rutledge during our interview. "It is a motivational tool that tells us when something is too easy, too difficult, or lacks personal meaning. Being bored stimulates us to change what we’re doing."

We asked Rutledge why so many people tend to pick up their phones when they're bored. "Because phones and devices require little effort, we often turn to them to soothe boredom," she replied. "Social media is a readily available source of interactive content, so it provides more mental stimulation than more passive activities. Even when you’re 'just watching', you are still actively scrolling and considering if there is other content you might want to see."

And if the content you choose involves learning something new, even better. That’s why we recommend scrolling through this list of random but really interesting facts from around the world. If you're looking for more fun, informative, and cool facts afterward, you can find them here. But first, continue reading to find out what else experts have to say about boredom.

Rutledge tells Bored Panda that there are times when scrolling through social media can be relaxing and restorative. "Content that makes you laugh or smile or inspires you with new ideas changes your body chemistry by triggering the reward center and makes you feel better, lifting your mood and releasing stress," she said.

But she adds that the key to any social media use, positive or negative, is purposeful goal-driven intention rather than using it to bury emotions. "It doesn’t matter whether the goal is fact-finding, connecting with others, learning to do something, or taking a moment of entertainment to exhale. Without some level of intention or self-awareness, we are at the mercy of our emotional reactivity," she said during our chat.

Both of Chan's parents were widowed and in the early 1950s, having left their respective children in China to escape Communist power, they had taken refuge in Hong Kong. The father had been a spy for Nationalist China; the mother had trafficked op**m. They had met in Shanghai because he, a port monitor, had arrested her during a search. There's also a documentary. He found out he had siblings while shooting it. Chan's life is worth to be googled.

You need to be mindful of what you seek out online to beat boredom. "Be intentional of your media use. Note how your mood changes with what you watch. Scrolling through social media can actually make your boredom worse," warned Rutledge. She suggests seeking out longer-form content, where you can become immersed in a story.

This allows for deeper engagement, she says, adding that it "increases the sense of meaning, resulting in a more positive experience." On the other hand, Rutledge warns that short-form videos often lack a compelling story arc, which leads to more scrolling, switching between content, and, ultimately, you guessed it: more boredom.

Actually, the squirrels don't forget where they hide them. Some get moved by weather, other animals, or human activity. Many are left behind because squirrels cache way more than they actually need. Edit: zoologist speaking.

Rutledge adds that digital media can be a convenient way to alter our environment, or beat boredom—but not if we’re on autopilot. "Turning to digital media isn’t the best way to manage our boredom if our kneejerk response to boredom takes us further away from our goals rather than engaging in more intentional activities with more personal value," said Rutledge.

"Goal satisfaction often means overcoming our automatic emotional reactions (like reaching for your phone and scrolling mindlessly). When we respond to boredom by taking stock and being intentional about what we’re feeling, we are more likely to find activities/behaviors that will have a positive impact."

it used to be connected to antarctica and both continents were covered in lush rainforest. Then they split and antarctica traveled south until everything there that couldn't fly or swim away froze to death, meanwhile austrailia traveled north faster then almost anything could adapt to and scorched to death most of it's forests. We have so many eucalypt species because it was one of the only trees back then that could survive drought.

It's actually purple, not 'jet black'. I'm sure the pic provided has been edited. I personally wouldn't say it was sweeter than honey, but definitely sweeter that golden delicious. It was nice, but not worth about (based on exchange rate at the the time) £6 per apple.

It's more violet, than black It's really sweet and crispy enough, but I may say, it's color is the more interesting thing about it. Because beside it's sweetness has nothing remarkable aroma. So if you like sweet and crispy apples Golden Delicious is right there for you.

Strataca Salt Mine in Hutchison, Kansas, USA isn't humid at all. Been there twice. You ride a double stacked work elevator 600 feet down. This is a working salt mine. One of its biggest customer is the city of Chicago for keeping ice and snow off their streets. Another use of this facility is for film storage. A train and tram take you around the the previously worked areas. You get to see old work equipment or anything brought down like personal items ...jackets and lunchboxes. FYI The side walls don't require shoring like most mining sites.

Yes and no. Salt mines actually have relatively high humidity. Halite only starts absorbing humidity when it reaches 75%. People's homes in the winter are far drier than that.

    María Hermida

It's not humidity that causes an asthma attack, but the allergens the humidity carries, for example spores of different fungi like aspergillus. The air inside a salt mine must be much cleaner, even if it's more humid.

Dr. Alan Castel is a professor of cognitive psychology at the University of California. He says that boredom can lead to curiosity, and that curiosity is often piqued when we encounter something unusual, interesting, or unexpected—like when scrolling through our social media feeds. Castel adds that curiosity is great for the brain.

“Humans have a need to forage for information and a desire to learn,” he wrote. “This starts at an early age and can be fostered and maintained well into older age. Critically engaging in this process and satisfying our learning interests can keep our brains developing at any age.”

Castel adds that general knowledge quizzes or fact listicles can engage your brain and trigger dopamine responses. “There is a good reason why trivia night is so popular at pubs and senior centers and why people eagerly tune in to the popular game show Jeopardy!” he said. Or why articles like the one you're reading now are a hit with Pandas.

Very suspect factoid, but I've had experiences with cockroaches that made them seem surprisingly sentient. I stayed for a time in a rental house that I discovered had occasional unwanted guests in the form of "palmetto bugs," which are actually enormous cockroaches. The first time I saw one of these suckers I thought there was a mouse on the ceiling. I'm not one to kill things, so I'd try to catch them under a glass at first. Waaaaay too fast to catch that way so I moved up to a bowl. Still way too fast. I bought the biggest glass bowl I could find and my catch rate was still pretty bad. Idk if anyone has ever seen Planes, Trains and Automobiles, but the scene when Steve Martin and Kevin Bacon both spot the same cab in NYC and their eyes narrow before each taking off at a run is exactly how it felt after awhile when I'd see one of these beasts. I swear they'd clock me spotting them, there would be a pause before we would both spring into action and the race was on. I usually lost.

Talking about Pompeii, a group of four people found many years ago has always been thought to be a family of four. One child was sitting on an adult's abdomen and archaeologist believed them to be mother and son since they were embraced. The other adult was very close to another child, so they presumed they were the father with the other son. A few weeks ago DNA results showed that the four were not related, the adults were both males, one of them presumably of african origin. The group had always been considered a moving portrait of a dying loving family

it looks like the woman and the girl in Vampire Diarys

Rutledge says people shouldn't feel guilty when they're bored, adding that "boredom is a normal, but uncomfortable, emotion that signals a need for more stimulation." She says we should use moments of boredom mindfully. "When we’re bored, we are more vulnerable to random scrolling driven by 'FOMO'. This is the opposite of intentional engagement for a purpose—whether it’s entertainment, learning, or inspiration—and also makes you more susceptible to negative social comparison."

I recently did a project on Marie Curie and she is truly a badass. I'm in school studying radiography and we were given a list of people whose discoveries helped make the field what it is today. I didn't know much about her prior but she not only broke barriers as a woman during this time but she earned the respect of her male colleagues. The Curie family which includes her husband, as well as her 2 daughters and her son in law have won 5 Nobel Prizes collectively. Talk about a brilliant family.

I love it cos, kids who have her treatment don’t need repeated grafts and more stress etc. I got burnt in 2007, and now I have just started to get some feeling back in spots and I grew 3 hairs there. Something not many know is that the saffron flower can grow in a variety of places. A neighbor in NW US grows his own saffron. He says it's just like growing any other flower from bulb for Easter, then harvests and dries the stigma. With the amount of counterfeit saffron in the market, may just want to grow your own.

Yes. It is so much better and a vast amount cheaper to grow your own. It is surprising the climates you can get it to grow in. We've found it quite resilient to many weather types. Just try it, you won't be disappointed. (Disclaimer: Author of this post does not accept any responsibility for any person(s) growing their own Saffron and ending up disappointed.) P.S.- Yes, I know that is silly, but one cannot be too careful these days!

This head lead to saffron counterfeiing actualy being a thing. Traders use things like cheap plant fibers dyed with curcuma and pass the of as saffron. Disturbingly this is so common that a study found out that most people do not notice the difference because they never have tasted the real thing.

Westgate was conducting a study into boredom when she came across an interesting finding. Her team had gathered participants in a laboratory and asked them to daydream. “We tell them, ‘Sit down, try to think of a pleasure, but if you want, you can shock yourself with this little electric shock here.’ About 67% of the men and 25% of the women chose to shock themselves, rather than just sit and think," she revealed during a podcast. "When we asked them why, they looked at us like, 'Well, duh, it was really boring.'"

probably 2 craters from the same extinct volcano. The valley I live in is sort of like a larger version of this, with a central mountain formed by a lava tube ringed by 1 small uninhabited caldera, which is then ringed by a second, extreamily large and fairly densly inhabited caldera. It makes for awesome scenery (it's called the tweed valley if you are curious, the central mountain is Wollumbin)

Maybe something left from when china was ruled by an emperor. The young scholars took the exam in front of the emperor, and of course his personal guards. The guards were also tasked to look out for cheater. And whoever was caught, was dragged outside and executed. To cheat on the emperor was a heavy crime.

That sounds like something my Mom could accomplish. She lived in our MIL apartment and took out the fence post more than once. My ex went to talk to her and told her he was setting the post in 3 feet of concrete. Guess who hit the post (yet again) and killed the left front side of her car?

I lost hair in huge patches due to stress a few years ago. Now, stress will cause an overall loss. It takes 6 months for the stress factor to effect your hair. That's why if they ask you about a stressful event they may ask about the past. My dermatologist recommended I try using Rogaine to speed up the regrowth.

When I was in grade school, one of the students was the daughter of a French diplomat. Her mom invited me over for dinner, and I was stunned to see both of us being served a tiny glass of wine. this is not a bad thing. I think many underage kids sneak alcohol these days because it is a forbidden, adult thing to do and so they get a thrill from it. If responsible drinking was a part of their lives ( glass of wine with dinner etc.) they would be better off.

The ratti fruit, also known as the gunja, is the fruit of the Abrus precatorius plant, a climbing plant with woody roots that is native to India. The plant is best known for its seeds, which are used as beads and in percussion instruments, and which are toxic because of the presence of abrin. Ingestion of a single seed, well chewed, can be fatal to both adults and children. The plant is native to Asia and Australia. It has a tendency to become weedy and invasive where it has been introduced.Ratti is a traditional Indian unit of measurement for mass. Based on the nominal weight of a Gunja seed (Abrus precatorius), it measured approximately 1.8 or 1.75 grains or 0.1215 g as standardized weight. It is still used by jewellers in the Indian Subcontinent. My lawn had these plants but I uprooted them.

If you ever wonder just how stupid some people are, consider this: a couple years ago a website posted a photo showing this. Dozens of people commented that it must be wild living in that spot. They thought there are places where it's completely light in one half of the sky, and completely dark in the other, and it just stays that way. This was just the people who happened to see that photo at that time on that day, and took the time to comment on it. That's who you're sharing a planet with.

Many years ago I was talking to a guy who worked for the state health department involving testing milk plants. He said one of the people would always much higher bacteria counts in the samples he took than expected, so a supervisor went with him to observe his sampling process. He very carefully opened the small plastic bags, and then blew into them to open them up instead of using the tabs that were there for exactly that purpose.

Not necessarily. The bacteria will spread through the water in the bowl meaning there are less per given volume, and most of the bacteria around the apple and in the water on your face will fall off as the water runs off as you come up from the bowl. But the bacteria will stick to the cake and stay there, and it will multiply much more rapidly owing to the abundant food source, so you'll get far more bacteria in your mouth from the cake than by bobbing for apples.

It's a bit weird, but the quoted 'weight' is assuming that it's in a vacuum. In the real world the solid material is compose mostly of air, so in a sense it's weight per cubic metre is that of the air itself (about 1.2kg) plus the graphene structure of around 160g. totalling 1.36 kg per cubic metre.

And doctors are now thinking much of it is beneficial bacteria like in the gut. Mouthwash over kills that beneficial bacteria. Like antibiotics kill the good stuff in our gut. Only if one has gum disease should one rinse with anything that kills bacteria in the mouth. And salt water is the best choice.

Pill Nathan Whitely: the post doesn't say ALL Rose Breasted Grosbeaks are male/female, only that one such was found. See link to National Geographic. Kind of like human hermaphrodites, it's rare, but not unheard of, and nothing to be afraid of. https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/article/rose-breasted-grosbeak-half-male-half-female

Leeches are used in some hospitals to clean up necrotic tissue on wounds. Very efficient, but the patient usually needs some light sedation because it's kind of icky to watch.

The Baby doesn't "send" cells - the cells responsible for building the body circulate through the child's bloodstream and also through the mother's as they are connected through the umbilical cord.

Not "any part"! A human foetus, alongside the placenta, act like a parasite. Diverting blood and nutrients for it's own benefit regardless of the risks to the host (mother). They a develop a protein that "cloaks" them from the hosts immune system. But they also have a symbiotic relationship with some ways: The Foetus can use it's control over the mothers hormones and immune system to give her the edge in times of distress, but will ultimately put itself before the mother when necessary.

This is unlikely. Sanichar was discovered in 1867, but Rudyard Kipling based Mowgli on six cases of wild children raised by wolves that Kipling read about in a book called 'Journey Through the Kingdom of Oude in 1848-1850', which was published in 1858 so could not have included Sanichar.

I'm downvoting this because it is BS. Almost no adults get a full eight hours of sleep, and people who work physically laborious jobs are not inherently healthier. I'm not a proponent for a sedentary lifestyle, but perpetuating c**p like this gets under my skin. If this were true, there would be a disproportionate amount of paraplegics and quadriplegics dying from sitting too long. That doesn't seem to be happening.
