The real world is very complex, unlike what you see in movies and on TV. Our planet, with its varied cultures and societies, is not unlike a giant, cosmic onion. There are lots of different layers of nuance to unravel. Sometimes, all it takes is one good map or chart to make you see things from a fresh new perspective and think outside the box.

That’s where the ‘Amazing Maps’ Instagram account comes in. It crunches data and then creates aesthetic world maps to educate and entertain social media users around the globe. Today, we’re featuring some of the curators’ top maps to show you things from a different point of view. Keep scrolling to learn something new.

Meanwhile, Bored Panda reached out to Georgi Pamyatnih, the founder of 'Amazing Maps,' with a few questions about his awesome project. Check out what he told us below.

Also in Europe, at least in Germany. And they can do great damage to infrastructure that should prevent flooding.

We were curious how the idea for 'Amazing Maps' came about in the first place. Georgi, the founder of the project, was kind enough to shed some light on this.

"In reality, I started the account primarily for fun, as a joke, inspired by other similar accounts on Instagram," he told Bored Panda in an email that this was "nothing special" at the time.

However, now, he's been focused on running 'Amazing Maps' for 5 years, an entire quarter of his life!

"What keeps me passionate [about map-making] is the fact that I see people actively engage with my content, the fact that I know I'm contributing to education and improving people's knowledge. I don't get paid anything for this hobby," he said.

Unfortunately, yes. I've seen this in several polls and statistics. It's related to many factors, not just t the price of books. As a high school kid said once in an interview, "I spend all my free time working in the field or taking cafe of animals. I'm too tired to do anything else."

"In the future, I'm planning on creating more reels and content in the form of videos, because sometimes just a map/post is not enough to convey all the necessary information in an engaging way," he told Bored Panda about his plans for 'Amazing Maps.'

We also wanted to get Georgi's perspective about the fundamental things that make a map truly great. "A great map is one which is easy to understand, conveys information in the most efficient way possible. There is a very fine balance between generalising too much, which results in a well-looking map but doesn't convey enough information to form a reasonable opinion on the subject," he said.

"It is always difficult to ensure that the maps you create are accurate. Some of the rules I go by are to not use sources older than 5 years (or 10 depending on the subject), always list the source (Wikipedia isn't as bad as people think), make sure to use accessible and good-looking colors and never put too much information on a single map, because you risk the viewer missing it out or being overwhelmed."

Also, back when the Taliban first took over, about half the doctors were women. The Taliban wouldn't let women work, so no more female doctors. But they also wouldn't let women see male doctors most of the time. So, many more women died of treatable medical problems and also it caused some women to k**l themselves.

I' am guessing here: 1. Estonian flag has colours blue, black and white on it and the national flower is cornflower. Hence i.e. national sports teams often were blue. 2. Belarus literally means White Russia.

Media literacy has always been essential for becoming an educated, well-rounded, skeptical, critically thinking individual. However, in this day and age, its importance is greater now than ever.

What with the vast pace of information and misinformation in your social media feeds, biased and fake news stories floating everywhere, and the veritable flood of artificial intelligence-powered slop. Knowing what sources (not) to trust is vital.

If you’re anything like the average person, then you’ve got tons of daily responsibilities, from work and school to chores and parenting. All of those must-do activities eat up a ton of time and energy.

So, you don’t necessarily have the space to double-check and cross-reference every single fact, claim, and opinion you see or hear on the news and on social media.

A much better approach is to figure out what sources are reliable and then to trust them to get things right (most of the time).

I can't tell from the map - I've got completely the wrong glasses on - and can't be buggered to change them (it's all a tad blurry!) but red hair likely originated in Central Asia. Central Asia is bordered by Russia to the north, and Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan to the south. The core of Central Asia consists of the five former Soviet republics: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Maybe a small historic pocket???

French is (or was?) the main language learned in schools in Australia (might now be Chinese) so I guess many might continue on Duolingo, but everyone I know who uses it picks whatever country they want to travel to most. I am learning (well, I've lapsed a bit) Irish Gaelic, and then I was watching a lot of Swedish tv series and it seemed pretty easy so started learning that too. Most people I know learn Spanish on it.

Trustworthy outlets will back up their claims, provide links to the sources they used, and have proper editorial standards. They won’t ever present opinions as facts. And if they ever make a mistake (even the best journalists do from time to time), they’ll fix the mistake.

The best of the best will even mention that they’ve made a correction, so that they’re fully transparent. Furthermore, trustworthy sources will also disclose any conflicts of interest they might have.

I wonder what this would look like in Australia? There are people who make the most of how multicultural we are by eating ALL the foods the migrants bring, then there are the ones (mostly farmers) who only eat 'Australian' food (which is really British food), meat an three veg for example, and then there are all the people that eat bush tucker, which is the true Australian food. I do all those things, all food is good (well meat and three veg is boring, but I do love a good roast etc). It would be interesting to see how this would collate into 'most popular'.

Honestly lions have been brought into Europe by humans since the Roman times, mostly for entertainment purposes. There were lions historically in parts of Europe but that was Neolithic times IIRC. Europeans knew what lions are though, for the most part. Doesn’t Scotland have a unicorn as their national animal? Doesn’t mean there were unicorns there haha

I didn’t know there were still wild lions shredder but Africa!

You should definitely be wary of believing anything said by a source that you’re unfamiliar with.

If a fact or claim sounds too good or too bad to be true, search for it elsewhere, and see what other sources corroborate the story.

If there’s only one or two unknown sources claiming something, then it’s a good rule of thumb to assume that they’re either wrong, have an agenda they’re pursuing, or a narrative they want to push.

Take a look at the other news stories that the outlet and its journalists cover. Think about what their goals and biases might be, and how this is reflected in the headlines and photos they use, the angles they write about, and the facts they stress or omit.

‘Perfect’ neutrality and objectivity might be a pipe dream, but reliable news sources do their best to provide a nuanced, contextualized picture of events.

Real life is complex, messy, and much more gray than purely black-and-white.

Compare the 'habitable' sections of Australia with the map of what is actually inhabited, that would be interesting. Especially since many people say we can't have more immigrants because there isn't enough room in the habitable spaces.

Same for the north part of the Finland, Sweden, Norway peninsula or what the frack Lapland is. Bottom line, people live there. You could survive really primitive style there, with some basic skills. And people have towns and s**t in the not habitable zone. Whole cultures have been born there

Icelandic surnames use the suffixes "-son" for sons and "-dóttir" for daughters. EX: a man named Jón has a son named Ólafur, whose surname would be Jónsson. If Jón had a daughter named Eva, her surname would be Jónsdóttir

In Australia, it's a choose your own adventure :) Obviously, first name + surname used to be the main option. With such a multicultural population, there ae many who use what is common in their culture, but there are also a lot of people who are choosing mother's surname, combining mother's and father's surnames and some even making up a whole new surname.

Versions of my first name are popular all over the world, and it has only dropped out of the top ten girls names in Australia a couple of times in the last 50 years. Some people hate having a common name but I'm proud of mine. My dad chose it, my mum wanted a similar name, but as she chose my older brother's name, he got final say. I'm quite happy about that, even though the meaning of the other name is closer to my personality than the meaning of my name.

Repetition, while great for building healthy habits and learning new things, is also one of your biggest foes if your goal is to uncover the truth. The reality is that human beings are more susceptible to believing that a claim is right the more it’s repeated.

This is known as the illusory truth effect. In a nutshell, the more exposed you are to a piece of info, the more you believe it. Even if those ‘facts’ go against what you’ve learned previously.

According to Investopedia, the fact that people are more inclined to see repeatedly encountered ideas as valid contributes to the spread of misinformation on social media.

“Faced with this informational overload, we don’t have the mental capacity to process everything in depth. Instead, we rely on a variety of cognitive shortcuts, known as heuristics, to simplify our decision-making process. One of the ways that our brains compensate for our limited cognitive resources is by processing things on a simple, essentially automated level whenever possible.”

Spain, Portugal, Italy, France all had empires in this time period too.

The fact is, even if you’re super analytical and highly educated, you can still fall prey to the illusory truth effect, Psychology Today notes. However, you can make others more immune to constantly repeated false claims and counter lies by:

    1. Using the so-called ‘truth sandwich,’ where you mention the truth, then the falsehood that’s spreading, and then describe the correct info
    2. Pre-bunking, where you ‘inoculate’ others by preemptively explaining the flawed argumentation techniques that misinformation uses to distort scientific facts
    3. Focusing on fact-checking, including homing in on accurate rather than entertaining headlines, and asking yourself how truthful statements are

California wouldn't be in this spot when suddenly on its own. They'd have to import lots and lots and lots of things they currently get from or through their own country while having to finance everything on their own. Meanwhile some companies and people would leave to remain with the US (while certainly others might want to join).

Map is confusing. When , for example has India been at war with Germany? Answer - During WW1 and WW2. But using that criteria Pakistan and Burma should also be shown as having been at war with Germany, because they were all part of the British Empire at the time.

Lmao honestly I had the exact opposite experience. Being in Thailand felt just as safe as being in Canada. But I was warned by so many people in Cambodia to avoid certain areas and keep myself safe and not go out at night. I was actually just watching that documentary of the white tourist who got thrown in a Cambodian prison for months because he got mad at an ATM and punched it (he was drunk). He was tortured and SA’d and treated like garbage. Thailand can be dangerous too but I’ve always heard Cambodia is worse. Even my government has more travel warnings against Cambodia than Thailand.

I live in Thailand and I used to poll US/EU girls on how safe they felt being out alone at night in a touristy part of Bangkok (lower Sukhumvit Rd.) and, invariably, they answered that they felt safer in Bangkok than their own home cities. Thailand is 98% Buddhist. You would have to travel to some conflict area looking for trouble to find it.

Hermann Rauschning is the author of the book called "Hitler Speaks" (called "The Voice of Destruction" in the US), where he claims to have had a lot of meetings and conversations with Hitler. Truth is that he likely didn't meet Hitler more than four times, and never for a private conversation. Today it is consensus that most, if not all, conversations in the book have been invented freely by Rauschning. It is highly likely that the information on this map about how the Nazis intended to split up the world is bogus as well.

Not true, the Germany promised the Middle Eastern rulers to divide it up (one of whom took over Iraq for a period,, the Grand Mufti was promised an area, and Germany was going to let the Saud's keep there area), and Egypt's king was promised his area, and after Vichy was created, the Germans promised them all their areas, and Germany never really drew up plans for Latina America or giving them to the US. India was planned to be split by the Germans between the UK and chandra bose

Canada technically didn't lose the War of 1812 since it was a tie. Though the Canadians did manage to burn down the White House during that war, a feat many Americans wouldn't blame them for doing again with the current occupant.

The vast majority of the countries that outlaw homosexuality or even punish it by death have one thing in common: their religion. Not to say that Christian or any other clerical fascists are better, but I’m outraged by how the horrible treatment of women, homosexuals, non-Muslims, etc. by Islamic regimes routinely gets overlooked and downplayed by much of Western politically correct media.

World map showing countries that apologized or declined to apologize to their former colonies, part of amazing maps.

Germany apologized to Namibia in 2004 for the Herero Gen*cide.
Belgium apologized for the colonial-era abduction of mixed-race children in 2019.
Italy apologized to Libya in 2008 and handed a $5bn investment compensation.
The Netherlands apologized to Indonesia in 2013 for the executions done after WW2.
Britain apologized to Kenya in 2013 and gave a compensation of £20mil.
Japan offered multiple apologies for its imperial past including the atrocities in Korea.

In France Macron said "We admit but we do not apologize" about the colonial crimes in Algeria.
In 2019 Mexico urged Spain to apologize for the colonial abuses but Madrid "firmly rejected".

Lmao I live in a very remote rural area in Canada. There’s a nearby village of about 200 people. A family from Manila just immigrated and chose that village to live in - they’re super sweet and friendly but everyone keeps asking them “why here, of all places? Did you just flip open an atlas and pick a random page?” 😂 the nearest town is a 45 min ferry ride, the nearest city is over 3 hours drive away, and even then it’s so tiny that it’s barely considered a city. Why here? Apparently they just wanted to be out in nature which I totally respect.

That depends a lot on how easy it is to get your depression confirmed by a doctor. Or how much people are encouraged to admit that they are depressed. This is like the "high r**e rate" in Scandinavia - no, they don't have more rapes, they just treat r**e victims better, so more come forward.

The national health systems are usually funded by taxes and a mandatory monthly contribution, so it is used. However, in the Netherlands you need to call first for an appiontment and the assistant will decide if it is serious enough for a visit. Usually you need to cope three days with paracetamol, if it is not better then, you may see the doctor. Plus the numbers above include routine issues like vaccinations, blood tests, general health checks (done by an assistant). Might include dentist, twice a year, general check is included in the insurance. Plus lots of people have burn-outs and depressions, so this might include other doctors as welm. In NL going to a fysiotherapist is quite normal, this is 6 to 10 treatments, often included in the insurance.

In that context, “gas” is short for the word “gasoline.” It does not refer to the state of matter called “gas”. If you think that’s what people are saying….theyre not the ones being stupid. You might as well be getting mad that people call the sound a dog makes a “bark” because “that’s not the outer layer of a tree” 😂 English contains many words with multiple meanings. Hope this helps!

These are the locations that Bhutan has specific diplomatic relationships with. Bhutan recognises the entire EU, for example, along with the USA and UK, but doesn't have formalised diplomatic relationships/embassies with them (the UK, first country to recognise Bhutan, has diplomatic relations through India's Kolkata embassy).

Australians and several other countries need an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). While it’s technically not a ‘visa’ it’s effectively an equivalent. Don’t try and enter the USA without one. And even with one is somewhat uncertain these days. Entering the USA is a bit like trying to get into jail to visit at the moment.

Not officially. The PR China refuses diplomatic relations with all countries that officially recognize Taiwan (which the PR China claims to be just a breakaway region) as a sovereign country, so most countries have retracted their recognization of Taiwan. Inofficially a lot of countries treat Taiwan as a separate country though.

Also places could be specified more - I'd feel less safe in a big german city than I would in smaller towns or villages at night

Fun fact, Canada has had no criminal restrictions on abortion since the late 1980s and our abortion rate has remained steady since then. Despite what anti-rights activists would have you believe, not everyone rushes out to get late term abortions because it's not illegal.

I would hazard a guess on saying, its the most densely populated areas of Russia, by any race. Im Scottish and if you look at population density of my country its very much coastal areas and islands on the whole. Russia is rugged and not all of it is suitable for human survival.

One step away from bankruptcy with a health crisis, liable to be shot at work, at school, even at home, if your the wrong color you're liable to be yanked in by jackbooted IRS thugs, have to watch rights erode and the country being ruined by the Orange Baboon, have to deal daily with homophobic, misogynistic, racist bastards that elected TACO...
