As much of a toxic place as the internet can be, you can also learn something new every time you go online. Such pieces of information don’t necessarily need to add value to your life, but it’s always nice to pick up something that enriches your knowledge in some way.

The All Things Known subreddit is one excellent source. It features facts about existence, reality, or the universe, as the page profile indicates. Topics here are broad, from how illicit substances affect the brain to how plumbing worked during the Medieval Age.

Here are some images from the pages that stood out to us. Enjoy!

It was a two-way street actually. Apparently the *less aggressive*, *less fearful*, and *somewhat smarter* (not to say lazier or less successful as hunter) wolves approached human encampments to find something to eat and we humans encouraged them to hang around because they offered a degree of protection against other predators and humans. In other words, it was transactional and, in this case, wonderfully beneficial to both sides. There are documented cases of wild baboons kidnapping feral puppies and raising them as troop guard dogs but the exact reasons for the behavior are controversial. (Google: apes kidnap puppies.) (Wikipedia: domesticated silver fox)

These days, you can learn valuable information online without necessarily consulting an actual textbook. Research journals have been published over the years that delve into specific topics, such as aspects of science, psychology, and human behavior.

As a result, it also changed the classroom dynamic between student and teacher. An article by Purdue University points out that traditional classrooms have the educator as the “sage on the stage.” However, the influence of digital technology has shifted the teacher’s role to that of a “guide on the side.”

This would be for hive bees. Solitary bee varieties sleep in flowers regularly. I used to work in a garden center, and one early morning an elderly lady wanted to buy a plant with a "bee decoration." I said, "Ma'am that's a live bee, it's just sleeping." She said, "Oh my goodness, I just pet a bee!" 🐝🙂

This is not even valid for hive bees, it's bs. If any bee is snoring in a flower, she's just sleeping, hive or solitary.

The longest known cave in the world is Mammoth Cave, currently at 406 miles, in Kentucky, USA but the largest room in Mammoth Cave is minuscule compared to several chambers in, or the sinkholes that provide entry to, some caves in Asia. The largest known cave by volume is Hang Son Doong in Vietnam, at about 38.5 million cubic meters. Many of those very large caves have (not really) underground forests where sinkholes allow enough sunlight. Instead of posting a picture, I'd suggest that anyone interested do a Google Images search to also see some of the other amazing things in the cave.

Yep! And a lot of people don't realize that wolf packs DO NOT always succeed when they hunt, even though they have strength in numbers. The hunting success rate for wolves is only 20% - that means that 80% of the time they hunt, they DO NOT make a kíll. They must scavenge as well, to survive.

With the internet and digital technology continuing to evolve, we can expect a complete shift in the years to come. Slowly but surely, they are seeing the benefits of online learning.

A 2023 study by MIT even revealed that students taking an online course scored as well, and even better than in-person learners, despite the reduced instructor time. A study by the Open University also found that online courses result in 85% fewer CO2 emissions, proving that it is likewise becoming a sustainable option.

Much of the boreal forest is mono culture. You see huge areas of nothing but pine. Very different from mixed forests further south. Completely different ecosystem. Also, In this case, this should be looked on as a crop like wheat or corn. It is planted to produce fibre and the spacing selected to maximize it. If you plant them too close they will produce a stand that is scawny and dense as most conifers do not express dominance like hardwoods where some individuals will grow larger and k**l off the weaker ones. The boreal forest has also adapted to wildfire as part of its life cycle and there are species of animals that depend on the burned areas. Wildfire is not a bad thing.

The explanation is a bit too simple, but the basics are true. Studies in 2006 found that the openings were purposely shaped to funnel wind into the aqueduct. This wind helps keep the water moving although the channels, and prevents stagnation

I can't recall whst show it was on but there was group of lions in a zoo. Both female and males lions. They were not brothers and sisters but they all grew up together so they treated each other like brothers and sisters. So they were not creating other lion cubs. There was a circus that had closed down in some other country. There was an old male lion in a cage. This zoo bought this lion and introduce this old male lion to this pride of lions. Let's just say he got frisky with the female lions and next thing you know they were plenty of young cubs roaming in the enclosure.

You'd have to have lava as a pretty regular local occurrence to confidently bunch around the edges of its flow with confidence. Or that's a Darwinian reason why Iceland's population isn't larger.

Wikipedia agrees: "The plant lives for many years until it flowers; estimates of its life span range from 5–15 years to 40 years. Flowering occurs mostly from mid-June to November. Atypical plants possess branches that flower and die independently from the main plant, so that these individuals die only after the last branch flowers."

Apparently, their shape is to cope with the variable climate in which they grow. From LiveScience Plus: "Their thick stems are topped with a crown of sturdy leaves covered in hairs that limit how much water escapes the plant by evaporation. Both the stem and the leaves store water for when the climate is dry, usually from December to March and June to October."

Don't let any American boy scout leaders anywhere near it. Here in the U.S. a couple of boy scout leaders (adults) were walking/camping in a national park. They saw a rock perched on another rock (like this one, only smaller), and decided to 'save their troops' by knocking that rock off it's support. Video taped it and everything. That rock had been like that for thousands/millions of years. They're not boy scout leaders anymore.

So I've seen this on here several times over the years, and it's always misidentified. These are not houses, these are allotment plots. Still a great innovation, but it should be pointed out that these are not residential. Instead it should be celebrated that community gardens and growing your own crops are given such priority and intention.

Did a search on it and... The image shows the Nærum Allotment Gardens (Nærum Kolonihave), a unique residential and garden area in a northern suburb of Copenhagen, Denmark. These are not typical suburban homes, but rather "allotment gardens" with small summer cottages used by city dwellers for gardening and a retreat from urban life.

This giant structure was built by Sociable Weavers, and it’s not just a nest... it’s a whole city in the sky. More than 100 bird families live inside it, each with their own little entrance. When you stand under it, you can hear the faint chirps and rustling from deep within, like an apartment block buzzing with life. What amazed me most is how long these nests last. The birds never stop working on them. They keep adding more grass, fixing holes, and reinforcing weak spots. Some nests can weigh more than a ton and stretch almost twenty feet across. And they don’t just last for a season, some have been in use for over 100 years, passed down through generations of tiny builders. Our planet Earth is full of hidden wonders, where even the smallest creatures can build something extraordinary.

A while ago I had a long conversation with a homeless guy I would run into going to and from work. Jim. He was cool. I'm in heels and a suit and he's well, you know. I always gave him some change and eventually we sat on a bench and talked. He liked his lifestyle and didn't want to be "homed" despite having local family. I had to respect that. Not a druggie or alcoholic. Just a loner. Too much to tell, but I'll never forget him. It took a lot of time and short conversations for him to earn my trust. It is a different world.

While this may seem like a wonderful idea, the ecosystem will be damaged, possibly beyond repair. They destroyed a whole system of mosquitoes in France once, and caused a massive famine for the birds that lived on them. These people who think they can control nature are often doing irreparable damage.

Diarist Samuel Pepys famously buried his expensive Parmesan cheese and wine in his garden during the Great Fire of London in 1666 to protect them, an act recorded in his diary that highlights the cheese's immense value as a luxury item, similar to modern-day gold. While his house survived, the fate of the cheese remains unknown, though archaeologists found no trace during excavations, leading to speculation he retrieved it, which seems likely given its cost and importance as a prestigious delicacy.

Why Coelacanths Are Not Good to Eat High Oil Content: Their bodies are extremely oily, which gives the flesh a bad flavor and texture. Urea & Wax Esters: These compounds contribute to a foul taste and can act as a strong laxative, leading to illness. Slimy & Mucilaginous: Their scales and skin secrete mucus, adding to their unappetizing nature. Plus they can cause diarrhea and contain some toxins that can k**l.

Fake: According to Reuters' fact check, sweden-does-not-use-new-beet-extract-salt-de-ice-roads-nourish-birds-2025-11-21. Bruno is correct. A Google search gives, "the viral claims about Sweden using a new "edible" road salt made from beet extract and corn starch to feed birds are fake, according to fact-checkers and the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket). While Sweden is working on more eco-friendly de-icing methods like brine and sand, they still use traditional salt, and the "bird-feeding salt" story is a hoax circulating on social media that conflates real research into salt reduction with fictional products."

Wouldn't make sense if this was real (which, apparently, it isn't), as birds would most likely get k****d on the road/car parks. I've witnessed absolute tw*tbaskets chucking food out of their cars, and often see bird carcasses near scattered food deposits.

Sugar beets liquid is more expensive than salty brine used to salt roads, it's to melt the ice and snow. The beet liquid isn't that red, and just like salt, it does melt and get into groundwater, causing minimal damage. This is the reason beet liquid was tried initially, as road salting has negative effects on groundwater.

It looks amazing, but I wonder how many birds smash into it or "fight" their reflections during the breeding season?

Not sure about breeding season, but definitely the former. I get birds crashing into my windows and I don't even clean them 😂 Luckily none have been seriously injured, just a bit dazed.

That can't possibly be good for the birds.

Do you know about desert birds? How many trees and plants as tall as trees do you see in this picture? With all those mirrors? Do think the birds there are more land birds or in the air birds? Ever heard of the roadrunner? The quail?

Just how many bird species are there in the desert? Not trying to be a smart*ss, just actually curious if there's that many to make this an actual problem.

If you don't want people to mine, don't use whatever it is you're using to view this. It can't exist without mining. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Does this lean more towards the “slippery slope” fallacy, or the “either/or” one? (Slippery Slope: This is a conclusion based on the premise that if A happens, then eventually through a series of small steps, through B, C,..., X, Y, Z will happen, too, basically equating A and Z. So, if we don't want Z to occur, A must not be allowed to occur either. Example: If we ban Hummers because they are bad for the environment eventually the government will ban all cars, so we should not ban Hummers. Either/or: This is a conclusion that oversimplifies the argument by reducing it to only two sides or choices. Example: We can either stop using cars or destroy the earth. In this example, the two choices are presented as the only options, yet the author ignores a range of choices in between such as developing cleaner technology, car-sharing systems for necessities and emergencies, or better community planning to discourage daily driving.) There are other choices, of course.

"Blue" bananas are real, but not like this. The yellow isn't replaced by blue; the green is. They start out on the bluish side of green, then turn yellow as they ripen. The flesh is never blue at all.

NO. From the actual paper: "they observed eventual tumor progression in all the cases". PLEASE DON'T GIVE PEOPLE FALSE HOPE WITH LIES. Yes, it's a new approach. Yes, it may be developed into a treatment. No tumours disappeared!

Good for her, but in context. I'm so bummed out on this. I worked as a contractor on a 95K sqft state of the art cancer and all inclusive treatment center for about 9 months during construction. It opened in September 2024. Started shutdown in January 2025. I was there when the MRI was installed and man, without that skin on it one crazy machine. This is crazy, so many people depended on this $100M facility for treatment and...Nope.
