From personal experience (NATO bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999) - that sort of behavior would be very swiftly solved by neighbors. Also, in war time, which is a state of emergency, government can doll out punishments for this sort of stuff verrrrry quickly.

It is in the title, it is for Elise. Why would he called a piece Fur Elise when it was for example dedicated to a woman named Margaret. If that was the case, then Margaret would be pissed of and demanding answers from Ludwig about this woman named Elise.

Reminds me of the Wiki page for Guy Standing. There was a long debate between Wiki moderators about the fact that - while technically accurate - describing the picture as 'Guy Standing sitting' has comedic value and therefore reduced the professional value of the article. guy-standi...433497.png guy-standing-guy-standing-sitting-at-the-bien-congress-in-2433497.png

It's hard to believe there was an actual debate, but since there was the proper argument would have been that the only reason to include "sitting" is for the comedic value. By any objective standard either it should be left out or the caption should also describe his clothes (and perhaps point out that the chair is blue), as both will be obvious to all users who can see the picture. The bigger problem would be that it pretty much demands that every picture on Wikipedia requires similar unnecessary description. Anyone dumb enough to honestly argue in favor of "sitting" is too stupid to deserve moderating power. The Piper Kerr one is funnier, but also conforms to plenty of other photos in which a subject's location is (presumably necessarily) noted.

Also the first university in the world was in Africa, in Morocco. There is also the thing that people from outside Africa continue to take photos of African countries to try and make the whole continent look backwards whereas of course they have sophisticated cities and suburbs. "They can be very clever and I think students really appreciate using memes to help them to connect to the topics they’re studying," Reid told Bored Panda. When so many people enjoy encountering funny history memes online, the lecturer said that "when they’re good, they are intelligent, witty, and fun. They also help people easily understand (and remember!) important events or ideas."

While some believe that history is a dull subject that is slowly losing its significance in the academic world, Reid said that it’s, in fact, one of the most enduring and popular ones.

"Practically everyone, at some point in their life, will set out to learn something about the past. History memes let us explore that enthusiasm in a new way, connecting with a broader and younger audience."

"If someone doesn’t love history yet, they probably haven’t learned about the area and period that will capture their imagination," he continued. "Memes are a great way to tell stories in a really accessible way — and they help people to learn about compelling chapters of the past that they didn’t even know existed."

Its a harsh system... oh and also... WHO IS BUYING A NOBEL PRIZE?! Just because you bought it doesn't mean it its yours now lol *facepalm

Studying the little details, even if from Reddit memes, that surround a specific era or event can help us deepen our knowledge and grasp why things happened the way they did. After all, learning about our past can change our perspective, improve critical thinking, and let us come up with new brilliant ideas. While the basic facts provide us with context, understanding how civilizations, cultures, and governments evolved is the truly fascinating part.

If you’re wondering why people should pursue history at all and why there are so many members in the r/HistoryMemes subreddit, it "teaches you how to investigate complex, world-shaping events," Reid explained. "It teaches you how to systematically find and analyze evidence. It teaches you how to communicate your ideas. At Coventry University, our students even learn how to make documentaries."

"People who study history become critical thinkers with a powerful analytical toolset and the ability to communicate complex ideas," he added. "Those are incredibly important skills — and they develop them whilst learning about the past and the forces that have shaped our society."

Reid stressed that studying history is not just about gaining knowledge: "It’s about gaining important skills that can be used to find success in a dizzying array of jobs and careers."

This is a horrible story. The kids were small and we were walking along the beach when we noticed a poor flipped horseshoecrab who was trying valiantly to flip itself with no success. "Mommy! Mommy! Save it! Save it!" I know nothing about horseshoe crabs- they look pretty scary but I want to do the right thing with the kids cheering on. I pick it up by the telson(?) since that looks like a safe area away from pinchers and try to fling it back into the surf. The poor thing goes flying off like a chunky frisbee and I am standing there mortified that I am holding a broken off telson. Kids are all upset: "Mom, you KILLED it!!!" Not one of my finer moments in parenting.

One of the saddest events that prove this was a football match between English and German soldiers on the 25th of December 1914. It began with British soldiers hearing the Germans singing Stille Nacht and then they joined in singing the English version Silent night. They then heard The voice was from an enemy soldier, speaking in English with a strong German accent. He was saying, “Come over here.” One of the British sergeants answered: “You come half-way. I come half-way.” What happened next would, in the years to come, stun the world and make history. Enemy soldiers began to climb nervously out of their trenches, and to meet in the barbed-wire-filled “No Man’s Land” that separated the armies. Normally, the British and Germans communicated across No Man’s Land with streaking bullets, with only occasional gentlemanly allowances to collect the dead unmolested. But now, there were handshakes and words of kindness. The soldiers traded songs, tobacco and wine, joining in a spontaneous holiday party in the cold night. Bairnsfather could not believe his eyes. “Here they were—the actual, practical soldiers of the German army. There was not an atom of hate on either side.” The soldiers from each side met with each other shook hands. shared photographs and exchanged gifts. A football appeared from somewhere and they played a game together then they were sent back to the trenches to fight. I cannot even begin to imagine what that must have felt like. Having just made friends with someone. Finding out that you have a lot in common and then being forced to try and kill them. War is so stupid and cruel. In 2014 The British supermarket Sainsbury's brought out an advert celebrating the 100th anniversary of the truce. Watch it here. If this doesn't get you in the feels you're dead inside. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-eJn3j7Qr9A&t=1s

That’s why war is bad, it hurts everybody in the situation, I mean people can communicate! How many wars could be prevented if the idiots in charge actually started thinking about the lives of people, and just decided to compromise with each other!

People were very familiar with birds (say, jays) imitating other sounds. Like hunters hating them for spreading other species' alarm calls and thus chasing prey away. So, no.

In the early 19th century, an explorer discovered a talking parrot in modern day Colombia that was a pet to a tribe which was recently wiped out. The parrot was the last living speaker of their unique language, and its entire vocabulary was recorded. https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/66479/parrot-kept-language-alive

Question authority. You can do that here, to an extent at least. Do not let anyone call you bigoted for questioning the left or a snowflake for questioning the right. They want you to believe there are two choices, those choices will always be philosophically diametrically opposed, and there is no possibility for common ground

If you are too young to remember 9/11, talk to an older adult who does. Fear is a wild thing. The political and cultural shift in the U.S. was enormous. If you've always lived the current side of that shift, you probably think a lot of things are "normal" that, when looked at through a wider lens, are actually quite odd. At the very least, you should be aware.

Actually only 10 out of 54 African countries were independent before 1960. If your criteria is independence in general, then anyone born after 2011, when South Sudan gained its independence, or if you're considering only decolonization, then those born after 1980 when Zimbabwe was recognised.

One might argue that it is only limited to _modern_ African states. Great Zimbabwe or Mali Empire were independent polities hundreds of years ago. But this would still be incorrect. Ethiopia has been existing as an independent state for more than two millennia with a short pause in 1930s when it has been occupied by Italy (it still regained independence before the coronation of Elizabeth II in 1952) while Liberia enjoys independence since 1847.

My mother was like that. Sh worked for a company that made historically accurate period costumes. She could only work with silk, wool, linen and cotton as they were the only fabrics used at the different times. She used to shout at the screen if she saw an actress wearing a Medieval style dress made from velvet.

There's a rule about NATO only inviting countries on peaceful soil (i.e. not currently or recently home to a war). Ukraine has an internal conflict (allegedly stoked by Russia) ongoing for years which keeps it conventionally unable to get the NATO invite. Russia is fostering an opportunity for itself, basically. Of course, the real UN Flex Tape is SANCTIONS! Woo!

Slavery is doing well, globally, today. People get so uptight about the past that they do not want to think about what is happening today and I find that very sad. We are all so excited about destroying memorials to the past and yet no one in the developed world is even vaguely upset that there are over 40 million slaves worldwide, most of whom are either women or children. Five of the top ten countries where slavery thrives are African countries. Is anyone doing anything about it? No, we' d all much rather pull down a statue to some long forgotten slave-owner.

    Iseefractals
    Community Member
3 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Everyone had slaves. Throughout all of human history. In fact, America wasn't even the last country to abolish slavery Cuba and Puerto Ricco held out for another 15 or 20 years, brazil didn't abolish it until 1888, Korea kept the practice going until 1930, the Nazi's re-established it in 1935... But though pretty much everyone in the world has outlawed the practice, there are still 45 million people currently enslaved. Right now. Today. All around the world. Throughout the entire African slave trade, only 12.5 million were shipped off, in the span of hundreds of years. The high count for the american south was 4 million. Everyone needs to stop bitching about history, as if it's going to somehow change, while ignoring the much more pressing, and far encompassing problem that exists right now. Today.

American students are justifiably horrified by the slave culture of AMERICA, which is why thinking people stay away from anything glorifying it. Things that happened in other cultures and other places are not our historical burden to bear. What's more, as far as I know, the US was the only one to have strictly race-based chattel slavery, which (to my mind) makes it worse than all other kinds, because it made people associate darker-than-Caucasian skin tone with slave, and inferior.

Heck, anything about George Washington Carver would work. He's known as the man who popularized peanut butter, but man was a genius. Born in Missouri, died in Alabama, Carver was a scientist who knew the barren souls in the U.S. South after the Civil War wouldn't produce crops. He discovered that the nitrogen in legumes can enrich soil while preventing erosion. He developed sustainable crops then shared his knowledge. This dude is basically the reason there wasn't a dust bowl in the American South in the late 1800s and the reason half of the South didn't starve to death.

It was the *Normans*, of "northman" (formerly Viking/Norse) lands in what is now France. They spoke a dialect of French (Norman French). And they were conquered so successfully than English remains the dominant language nearly 1000 years later.

Margaret Thatcher. Cleopatra. Elizabeth the First. Joan of Arc. Boadicea. Isabella the First. Artemisia of Caria. That's a few famous female leaders throughout wars. Not including almost any reigning female monarch in world history. That's just the ones in power. If you need to know about women being combative there's this sport called boxing, a selection of martial arts (including Wing Chun, as practiced by Ip Man who taught Bruce Lee, which was invented by a Chinese nun), and frankly maybe if you got off the Internet and met a woman. My 4 year old daughter is pretty bloody combative, and apparently knows more about history than some people...

The British military responded by making it a disciplinary offense to come down with VD...this backfired; while there was no cure, there were treatments (of limited value, but not 100% useless), and the policy led soldiers to avoid seeking medical care until it was too late for the treatments to do any good.

When my great grandmother died in the mid 1970's (she was 102, smoked 2 packs a day unfiltered for 80 years) my parents went to clean out her house. In her medicine chest....they found big bottles, of Bayer Heroin, Cocaine solution, Morphine and Similar cough syrups as seen above. All in various states of being less than full, but far from empty. My, dad being comfortable with "medications" verified that they were still potent despite being 50 some years out of date. Leaving my parents somewhat confused. Until my mother went down in the basement and found an old freezer. Which was packed with hundreds of bottles like they found in the medicine chest, and nothing else....but the freezer was far from being full. Apparently granny and gramps stocked up before everything was pulled off the shelf Apparently, they stocked up before all the "good stuff" was outlawed and doled it out as needed over the next 5 decades. Wish i got to meet those GPs, the ones i knew sucked.

Socialism means the government owns the means of production. They just call themselves "The people" and would usually provide worse conditions to the workers. At least in every socialist state that was or still is there in history

    De Gueb

Like all arguments, if taken to the extreme they become mute. Communist Russia was a totalitarian state. Socialism is not comunism, in socialist country's the state doesn't own the means of production. In comunist states the state owns everything. I know people who lived in comunist Russia and they were happy, free education, free health care, if you had studied a skill you lived ok. I went to school in UK and everything was free, even the pen & pencil's we needed to write. Bus, school lunches we're subsidised or fully covered depending. Healthcare was free, still is. The definition of a socialist state is not the government taking everything. It's making sure everyone can live a decent living. Not happening now by the way. In Franco's Spain, school was mandatory till 14, for those who could afford not to have there kids working. Schools were all Catholic and more then teach knowledge they indoctrinated the kids in the values of the regime, people paid taxes. It's not black and White.

Their fleet was surrendered after the Battle of Copenhagen, oaks for ship building are matured for a minimum of 120-200 years before harvesting. They didn't have enough oaks to replace their fleet so the crown took possession of all available growing oaks - which was not enough - barred the felling of oaks, and planted more to ensure future supply to rebuild the navy. This is known about and certainly happened,it was certainly publicised whe the order was finished, the trees are being put towards other purposes now.

I mean, it's better than the opposite. For years, historians would straight-wash history. They'd read lines like this from Emily Dickinson and still insist that she was absolutely 100% straight. "Susie, forgive me Darling, for every word I say — my heart is full of you, none other than you is in my thoughts, yet when I seek to say to you something not for the world, words fail me. If you were here — and Oh that you were, my Susie, we need not talk at all, our eyes would whisper for us, and your hand fast in mine, we would not ask for language."

honestly, is worth asking the question in many cases. we know that people in the pass had no much different sexual behaviours as ours, and some cases more freer that we see today...but things that today are consider sexual were normal non-sexual in the past, like kissing or holding hands...but we know that many, "straight" characters weren't that straight. and homosexuality was as common as is today...that's why we study history, to figure that s**t out

I think it's cute how the traitor insurrectionists of 1776 still call uk "great" britain, I mean really it hasn't been great for quite a while, and the last time it was, it was mostly great at killing people and planting flags and saying 'tally ho'.

The word Great has nothing to do with the behaviour of the countries within Great Britain which in itself is different from UK. Ptolemy referred to the larger island as GREAT Britain (megale Britannia) and to Ireland as little Britain (mikra Brettania) in his work, Almagest (147–148 AD). Later on it was called Brittanie Majore to distinguish it from Brittany in France, which was also mostly inhabited by Celts.

Isn't this a misattribution, and an incomplete statement too? It wasn't said by Lord Kelvin, but by Albert Michelson at an inauguration speech six years before it's supposed attribution. Also what Michelson said was that the great principles had already been discovered, and that physics would henceforth be limited to finding truths in the sixth decimal place. Lord Kelvin did mess up some predictions - like the famous one about aeroplanes never becoming a practical success - but this was not one of them.

There's a workaround. If you respond with another question like "Am I pretty?" or a neutral answer like "Eh you'er average" it's supposed to confuse her giving you time to run away. My favourite thing about these Japanese legends is there's always a way out.

(Was aiming on stranger, mask, dark alley). Different story if you know the person, or it’s a more normal situation. Please don’t scream for help when your girlfriend asks you if she was pretty. Maybe point out that true beauty comes from the inside, and how glad you are it is this way, otherwise you would get blind by her radiance. 🥰

No. It is not clear when humans developed speech. But neanderthals were capable of it, they had the genes and the hyoid for it and bred with us. So speech is probably older than our species. Probably about 500.000 or older

I've got an interesting theory. I feel like humans (or proto-humans), used to communicate with one another using a combination of vocal sounds and sign language. Which is why it feels so natural to move our hands when we speak. Or, when we're trying to explain something complex or struggling to get our point across, we often try to mime out what we're saying. It's instinctual. The ability for humans speak didn't suddenly evolve out of nowhere.

There is an (unproven) anecdote that Richard one morning awoke from his slumber in his heavily guarded headquarter and found something on his nightstand - a cake. Saladin had sent one of his assassins to place it there as a message: "we could have killed you if we wanted to."

actually the reason they became all chummy, was the fact that non of them could finish the other of. so they had to make a pact to allow Richard to leave and Sahaladin to keep Jerusalem. without either losing face...Richard look like a hero to Christians and Sahaladin a hero to islam...they would have tear each other apart if any had a winning chanse

The last GOP president before him was Eisenhower. Eisenhower didn’t win the south and embraced these values.

My dad loved this song. I got the German teacher to translate it for me. I was so surprised as to how beautiful it was. I think it was chosen because it had a strong 4/4 beat time making it ideal to march in time to. Listen to it here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqPdi6DbSAE. On the heath, there blooms a little flower and it's called : Erika. Eagerly a hundred thousand little bees, swarm around, Erika. For her heart is full of sweetness, a tender scent escapes her blossom-gown. On the heath, there blooms a little flower and it's called : Erika. Back at home, there lives a little maiden and she's called : Erika. That girl is my faithful little darling and my joy, Erika! When the heather blooms in a reddish purple, I sing her this song in greeting. On the heath, there blooms a little flower and it's called : Erika. In my room, there also blooms a little flower and it's called : Erika. Already In the grey of dawn, as it does at dusk, It looks at me, Erika! And it is as if it spoke aloud:21 "Are you thinking of your fiancée?" Back at home, a maiden weeps for you and she's called : Erika.

Speaking of German soldiers, this reminded me of this poem. Three weeks gone and the combatants gone returning over the nightmare ground we found the place again, and found the soldier sprawling in the sun. The frowning barrel of his gun overshadowing. As we came on that day, he hit my tank with one like the entry of a demon. Look. Here in the gunpit spoil the dishonoured picture of his girl who has put: Steffi. Vergissmeinnicht. in a copybook gothic script. We see him almost with content, abased, and seeming to have paid and mocked at by his own equipment that's hard and good when he's decayed. But she would weep to see today how on his skin the swart flies move; the dust upon the paper eye and the burst stomach like a cave. For here the lover and killer are mingled who had one body and one heart. And death who had the soldier singled has done the lover mortal hurt. Keith Douglas

The most advanced biological warfare armament was owned by the japanese at that stage, by the hands of unit 731 a organization so macabre that most people doubted the existence till 1990s where the information was declassified. So yeah i am not from the USA, but i can see how biological warfare could be several levels worse.

No, but a ground war over every inch of Japan would have been devastating for soldiers and citizens. Cities razed and famine sort of devastating. I'm not saying the nukes were a good idea, all war is horrible, and I have no idea which end to the war would have meant fewer casualties.

The nukes killed the same number of people as the entire US pacific theatre casaulties. Except the nukes were dropped on civilians: the US should have been prosecuted for warcrimes.

It has been proven that every civilian was going to fight, as well as every soldier. My father was in the 9th Infantry Division, and he knew as well as every other man in his outfit, they would have to take Japan an inch at a time killing every man, woman and child. This would have decimated the population of Japan, would that be preferable to dropping two atomic bombs? There was no good choice, only the lesser of two evils. And please remember, the bombs were atomic, not nuclear.

Everybody needs a history lesson, an atomic bomb is NOT a nuclear bomb. At that time in 1945 there was no other way to end the war. The Emperor was not going to surrender, he was literally a god made flesh to the Japanese people. The troops in Europe, one of whom was my father, had discussed how they were going to attack the islands and it was quite simple. Kill every man, woman, and child. Reports from the Pacific had reached them so they knew what they would be up against. There was no good choice, you can Monday morning quarterback it, but you weren’t there. I lived over 40 years with a man who fought in 8 major campaigns in World War 2, starting with the North African campaign. The reports they received let them know that they would have to fight for every inch of ground. So go back and read the documents from the 1940’s if you are interested in an unbiased opinion on the war, or sit back get spoonfed the pablum and don’t think for yourself. That seems to be the specialty now.

There wasn't an easy way to end the war although it is suggested that, with the Soviet declaration of war and the inevitable collapse of attempts by the Japanese leadership to have the Soviets broker a peace deal with the western allies would've lead to the Japanese surrendering. The subsequent arguement is therefore that the US dropped the bombs to intimidate the Soviets/prevent them from staking a claim to any intelligence/technology that victory over the Japanese might yield. This is supported by the fact that even after the dropping of the second bomb on Nagasaki, the Japanese did not immediately surrender and waited until it was clear that the Soviets would not only not intervene on their behalf but were actively joining the fight against them

one just needs to look at the final few islands the US invaded towards the end of the war how many people died? and how many Japanese were there? there were 76 thousand japanese on Okinawa with a resulting combined casualty count of 100 thousand plus with anther 150 thousand civilians dead. then think about the next island America was going to land on one just off the coast of japan which japan had over 700 thousand placed there to guard it.

Most of the soviet casualities were caused by Stalin's decision to execute his most capable officers out of fear they could be traitors. Together with inferior equipment and tactical experience in the early stages. And it was basically the unplanned italian invasion of Greece that caused the Wehrmacht to attack Rusia during winter as they had to assist Italy first

b******t. the Russian army was well equipped and had experienced military leaders. yes purges made by Stalin before the war and his refusal to challenge Hitler as he prepared to invade, lead to an Russian army unprepared to fight effectively during the initial months of the blitz and suffering huge loses. but that same army manage to slow down and eventually push back the invasion. in contrast to other nations, the Russians had to recover from the brim of failure, while enemy armies run wild in their territory. with all that, they would eventually take the war to Berlin and pretty much smashed the best german units...the poor decision making of the germans made a lot of damage too...but it was still the biggest factor to decide the war in the western front

Throughout most of history the priest class drove new invention and advancements. However I will not deny that we have progress very quickly with secular science. But I think that is more due to increased literacy and education then anything else.
