Yesterday The Owner Of My Company Noticed That The Shoes I Had On Were Worn Through And The Jeans I Had On Had Holes In Them
I was planning on getting a new pair of each on my next paycheck. Today he took me to Costco and bought me 2 new pairs of shoes, 4 new pairs of jeans, and some food.
I started in December of 2020 after being laid off/unemployed for a vast majority of the year. I’m still trying to get back on my feet financially and make ends meet. It was such an unbelievably nice gesture. I cried and gave him a hug. I can’t wait until I’m able to pay it forward.
It does not take much to be a good person ...or boss. Glad to know the boss could see this person struggling and did something to be of help.
When I was working retail my manager once asked me if I could go a shift without break, In exchange he would buy my groceries. I agreed, because I was struggling so hard and the groceries he bought for me kept me alive for almost a month. (i picked mostly cans and frozen stuff)
I had a boss that let an employee stay with her to get her out of an abusive situation, just until she found an affordable and safe place to live. The company we work for found out and wrote up the boss...🤬
I'm a bike commuter and I had a boss buy me a helmet because I rode 10 miles a day up and down Highway 101.
This is wonderful. Please pay it forward when you can. The little extra you have today can make a huge difference for someone.

Leadership author Robyn L Garrett says that one clear requirement many employees nowadays have for their bosses is emotional maturity. "We're done with bosses that yell, whine, and play mind games. A good boss needs to be able to manage themselves and focus on true leadership," she says.
Gen Z and Millennials also want to feel respected at work. "Younger generations expect a more respectful and responsible workplace. Norms have changed a lot in the last 20 years and they'll continue to make the workplace more inclusive and less stressful. That's something that benefits everyone, regardless of age," Garrett notes.
Still, being a good boss doesn't mean you're everybody's friend. "It's more important that bosses are respectful of employee boundaries than it is for them to build personal connections," Garrett believes. "If an employee prefers not to mix their work and home lives, that is a perfectly reasonable choice. The boss's job is to build a healthy work environment so that people can do their best possible work," she explains.

I actually work for a company that cares. My boss gave me $10k to help wildfire victims, doesn’t care how it helps as long as it helps. Started with a semi load of bottled water. In 3 decades of work, I’ve never worked for good people until now. Been smiling for 2 days about this.
worked for a great guy who was in agriculture-melons, veggies, etc. in california. he hired migrants for both field and truck work. this was in the central valley btw. one of the machines that was central to his operation broke down. the part was located in san diego which was at least 300 mi away. he calls in this young kid about 18 & hands him 5K in cash (!), the keys to a company truck w/instructions to get the part asap. and since it's a long drive a few bucks for motel & food. boss' sons were furious as they were certain this kid would just continue into mexico & would never be seen again. about 48 hrs or so the kid walks in w/the invoice & change from money. boss told him he didn't think he would be back so quickly or have that much change. kid told him he ate on the road & dozed in rest areas. boss also took hundreds of pounds of produce to schools, shelters, etc. and even had a small roadside table w/sign stating if you needed something to eat to take what was needed. loved him
You're so dense, you're completely missing the point of water for fire victims. The water can also be consumed by first responders, as well. Unless you have been in disaster situation where water is SCARCE, then you have absolutely NO right to criticize this. When you don't have water, trust me, it's definitely gratifying to HAVE it when it arrives.

The employees said their bosses are very good at giving their employees flexibility on work-life balance, giving the employees credit when it's due, and staying calm under pressure.
The gender of the boss doesn't matter to employees. Most are likely to say that their boss is good regardless of whether they're a man or a woman. They are, however, more likely to describe their boss as "caring" and more likely to give the employees credit.
Beautiful To Be Supported By Such A Thoughtful Team
Looong time ago I was recently hired by this big company and my father died a month later. My boss was extremely supportive and gave me all the days I needed to take care of everything, funeral and legal stuff.
For 8 years, I had the best boss ever (he then retired). When my dog had cancer, and I needed to take a personal day, I was kind of apologetic since it was my dog. He said, no need, take the time, because our pets are like family. I loved that man's compassion. Found out later that there was an older woman in the district who had lost two of her children. She told me that this man used to send her flowers each Mother's Day to cheer her. She had no family near by, either.
I love this. When my mom passed away unexpectedly (2003) after 3 days, my boss told me that I needed to get back to work since "dwelling won't bring her back" --yeah, I don't work there anymore.
This was back in the 70’s. I was going through a rough divorce and told my boss I needed a leave of absence to get my head together. I told him I didn’t know how long I’d need and if he wanted to replace me I’d understand. Well, the first week I was out I received my full paycheck. I called and was extremely thankful. I wasn’t vested in the company long enough to get any benefits and I thought what a kind man he was. Then I received another check after week 2 of my absence. Instead of calling to thank him I came back to work the next Monday. I thought that if he could be that kind and generous he’d probably be a great boss. He was. I still think of him and his generosity all these years later.
My job is like this. I should make more $, but there just isn't more to spare. But, my mental health and personal life are thriving.
You should not have to ask, it should be a paid sick day were the responsibility for making things work without you, for just a single day or 2 should be with the managers/bosses... basic workers rights in the civilised world I would argue... that's what our unions have achieved for almost all of us in DK
Unlike the place I worked for, when my father passed, I asked for the day off. I was asked when the funeral was. it was at 9AM. The Not-So-Super-visor said "Ok but we'll be expecting you back here after 1?
My workplace surprised me last year, both my parents died, 10 months apart. They only have to give 5 bereavement days firceach parent. I ended up needing 2-3 weeks to organise the funerals....400kms away...and mum died first week of December...when I realised my first day back at work would be Christmas eve I called in and said I can't do it, working in retail, having to hear and say merry Christmas to everyone, whenwe would have happily cancelled Christmas...it would have broke me. Nearly 6 weeks, paid in full, bereavement leave. It still surprises ne that the store manager approved it..forever grateful, it made a huge mess less stressful.

the fact that the employee has enough confidence to tell him about that shows that he knows the boss has his back!
I once had a bos like that. We were all very sad when he retired to care for his ailing wife, but we had the solace knowing she was in good hands, like when we was our boss. He was always looking out for us and treated us with amazing respect... because we did for him, too!!! A boss like the one above in the post, are out there, but unfortunately, few and far between!!!
When asked whether they would like to work more for a man or a woman, a bigger percentage (15% vs. 12%) veered towards having males as bosses. What's also interesting is that men prefer that their boss be male, while females prefer their bosses to be women.
For women under 30 that seems to be particularly important, as one in ten of such respondents said they'd prefer if their boss was a woman. For other age groups of women and men, the percentages were much lower, under 20%.

Amazing boss! When my only nephew passed at age 24, the only "support" my boss gave me was to remind me I only get 5 days off for bereavement leave. So caring - NOT!
5 is pretty good. I was given 1 day and was told I could either visit my grandma before she passed away in hospital or go to the funeral, but not both.

I happened to have taken a couple of vacation days when my mom took a sudden turn for the worse and ended up passing away. My director wanted me to use more vacation days instead of bereavement leave in the aftermath because I was on vacation already anyway so what's the difference? She changed her mind PDQ after hearing from my assistant dept head, my dept head, and the assistant director.
What makes a good boss? Why are some loved and others hated? The truth is that many people who become bosses don't have the skills to be good leaders. As organizational development consultant and author of Work Jerks Louise Carnachan told us in a previous interview, most employees become bosses because they've worked at that place long enough or were very good at their jobs.
I'm The Only Gothic Person In The Office. Halloween Is My Favourite Time Of The Year. Came To Work To My Desk Decorated For The Day By My Managers
It was also my birthday earlier this month, but I was on holiday (which is why the desk wasn't decorated to begin with) so they got me a Halloween themed cake! Don't think I've ever felt this special. Happy Halloween everyone!
Goth or Gothic? Because I was very disappointed when in the mid-90s I went to a Goth club for the first time. I was expecting something much more like Enigma than what I found. Not *bad* music to a guy like me who liked '80s acts like Kate Bush, Siouxsee and the Banshees, Billy Idol, Metallica, Dead or Alive, etc., but not what I pictured.

However, being good at your job doesn't always translate into being a good boss. As Carnachan told us previously, leading others is a completely different job, and many people thrown into the position of a boss can lack that competence. "Unless you've had a role model to follow, you're probably at sea about what to do," Carnachan noted.

Best Boss Ever
Last week my boss asked me to go over some paperwork for a project, to which I said, I will make it a fun weekend activity to read through it with my son. For context, my wife and I have set a goal to read him 1000 books in 2024. We joked that the paperwork should count as 10 books, we chuckled and moved on. Today, I came in to work to find a couple books and this note with a couple books sitting at my desk. The fact that she cared enough to not only buy the books but to write this adorable note genuinely made me smile. It’s these small details that make her the best boss I have ever had.
I suspect this is a very young child and the books in question are mostly board books and simple picture books that only take a few minutes each to read. 3-4 of those books a day is perfectly reasonable.
Load More Replies...I am so weirded out by so many comments thinking a thousand books is too many books to read to a child... FYI, 2nd graders in our local school have to read 3 stories each morning during the 1st hour of school. The stories are targeted to the individual child's reading level, but the best way to become a good learner is to be a good reader, and the best way to grow a good reader is to read to them as much as possible.
I have a lot of questions regarding context, kids age etc, but one of the more pressing questions imo is does a book of short stories count as one book or multiple?
perhaps they meant: in 2024 we made a decision to read 1.000 books to the son (in the years to come)

It's awesome to hear about companies and bosses that actually care about their employees. My wife works from home and was complaining about her office chair during a Zoom meeting. The chair was a few years old and getting a bit worn. He boss said to buy a new one and submit the receipt to her and would reimburse us the cost. Not only did they reimburse for the chair, she rounded it up from the actual $320 to $400!! We used the extra money to buy something for herself!!!
"Leadership training and coaching can help immensely, but not every organization makes this available," Carnachan explained. However, new bosses can become good leaders by educating themselves, too. "There are many good books and leadership classes you can take on your own or through your professional organization," according to Carnachan.

Always great to have a good boss. Reminds me of my current supervisor, great woman.
I had a MMD break at work and spent a week in the stress unit at the local hospital. I actually never went back to work. No one from work ever checked up on me, even by phone. In fact the co-worker that I considered my best friend never called or even asked about me. It would be funny considering that I worked at a Mental health facility.

Back then, Carnachan also told us that most employees say they have a good boss when they have similar characteristics, even if their personalities are completely different. "The commonalities of great leaders are that they ask questions, listen, know something about their direct reports' lives (as in what's important to them, not by being intrusively personal)," Carnachan told us last year.

Just as listed in the Pew survey, a good boss, according to Carnachan, also gives feedback on an employee's performance, sets clear goals and direction, has high expectations for themselves and their team, doesn't shy away from difficult conversations, and isn't afraid to admit when they've made mistakes. "These are people who are not only respected, they often are role models for future leaders," Carnachan explained.
My Boss Gifted Me My Dream Car
The Outback has always been my dream car for the last 10 years. Started out with an Impreza that ended up breaking my heart when the CVT died and I wasn’t in a position to get it fixed. I’d given my wants up to time, if I get it, awesome. If I don’t, I still have a vehicle.
I moved 2k+ miles with just my kitties from the state I grew up in 2021. Will be at my firm 2 years on 04/25. I had a car after the Impreza died, which happened 10 months after I moved, but the Volkswagen had been stolen (then returned 12 hrs later with 7 suitcases and fentanyl in it) and it was really janky and would break down a lot.
My boss saw I had a need and only out of the goodness of his heart fully paid for my ‘21 Outback. No strings. No payments to him. However he is an attorney and made me get an insane 1M policy. But I don’t complain about that at all. I got incredibly lucky as the amazing dealer found one with 1 owner who leased it so, it only had around 18k on it. I have my dream car. 5 months later I still can’t believe it. Absolutely floored. Hard work pays off in other ways than money or promotions.
I’m so eternally grateful for the people the Universe has put in my life. Words can’t explain my appreciation and safety knowing people I have no relation to has my back. And it gives me comfort to know that my closest friends and family to think of me in such a way to see me happy.
I actually lolled... did she get to keep the suitcases and fentanyl?
This lady has a sweet ride, a sweet boss, a sweet job, and sweet kitties. So she is definitely living the good life.
Our company did this for one of my co workers . She works really hard and couldnt afford to keep her car running. The month she made employee of the month they gave her a dependable car instead of a plaque.

A good boss also needs to constantly ask themselves: "Am I a good boss?" As Linda A. Hill and Kent Lineback write for the Harvard Business Review, "as they settle in and lose their fear of imminent failure, they often grow complacent. Every organization has its ways of doing things—policies, standard practices, and unspoken guidelines, such as 'promote by seniority' and 'avoid conflict.' Once they're learned, managers often use them to get by—to 'manage' in the worst sense of the word."

Turns out he came back yesterday and he gifted me this bad boy today. I offered to throw him money for it but he insisted that I just have it for free. Definitely extremely grateful to my boss for this!
Ha, I thought it was a vibrator and thought it was a little inappropriate from your boss!!😂😂
It is all fun and games until someone loses an arm in a Cantina... Just saying.
A good boss also faces conflict head-on, although most tend to avoid it. "'I hate company politics!' they say. 'Just let me do my job,'" Hill and Lineback write. "But effective managers know they cannot turn away. Instead, with integrity and for good ends, they proactively engage the organization to create the conditions for their success."

In his giddiness, he bought them WITHOUT looking closely enough, because he was on DOLLHOUSE/ CRAFT website. Better than a "clever", non-gift... Like a certificate with some daft message.

Surprise From My Supervisor
I came into work today to find this little card and some chocolate from my supervisor. Back says "thanks for all you do :)". My previous job was filled with toxic managers who always made me feel like I was crap at my job because customers weren't flooding the sales floor and buying cars (I worked internet sales for a car dealership), and that I was always expendable. Now I work for great people that make me feel valued and if I mess up, my job isn't at risk. Just wanted to share my fuzzy feeling with you all.
My previous supervisor would make a little gift bag for each employee at the end of the year for appreciation for all the hard work we did for the past year.
My Boss Ties Pieces Of Paper To His Hoodie So He Remembers To Look At It Later
I have so many alarms set on my phone for this exact purpose! It sucks to be middle aged and have zero recall!
You think you have zero recall during middle ages? Wait until you hit 65.

Get You A Boss Who Responds Like This & Asks If You Need Anything When You Call In Sick Instead Of Belittling You For Calling In Sick (:
I Employed A Redditor, She's Always Browsing Instead Of Working. I Hope She Sees It Because I'm Sick Of Telling Her To Get Back To Work!
I guess... I doubt I'd put up with it for long

I'm A Lifeguard. My Boss Gave Me A Key To Open This Drawer, Then Started Laughing Hysterically When I Tried Unlocking It. I Didn't Realize Why Until Now
My Boss Takes His Vacation Very Seriously
I forwarded my boss a threatening email I received while he was away on vacation. This was his response.

I got really lucky with my superiour, too. Even if he didn't use words, he shows me his appretiation thourgh my pay check regularly. When the work got overwhelming constantly, with no opportunity to slow down a little, he got me a new colleague. And once, we had a major project, for which I was the main driver in our department, but I only managers were invited to the success party. My boss came back with a piece of cake and a soda. He asked everyone at that party, why I was not invited, since I was the one who did the job. Then he proceeded to ask the other managers who were there, about their main diver employee... He then refused to eat that cake, since he was really not that much involved, and instead he took it, left the party and gave me that cake and soda, with the words: for your hard work. The bosses are very pleased. And left. I later heard what really happend.
I worked in a grocery store, and I had a couple of managers. One yelled at me for leaving the register while I was helping an elderly customer exchange an item and the other took over bagging groceries for me so I could take a break to call my mom and ask for her help. (It was a torrential rain storm and since I'd only been driving for 4 months I wanted her to pick me up because I didn't feel safe on the road). He also consistently would do the most menial tasks such as bagging or sweeping when the store was busy. I really liked that second manager.
21 years at my public library and I still love it every day. Somedays more than others, but I've been so incredibly lucky to have a wonderful work environment.
I had an awesome boss in my last job. I got sick, really nasty migraines and collapsed several times. My boss sent me home send kept my job open for 3 months as doctors were trying to find out what was wrong. There was a roster of staff to check on me (I lead just moved to part of country with no family or friend support). She kept me on a maintenance wages even though she wasn't legally obligated to. Unfortunately it ended up being a condition that meant I became an invalid, but the support I had from her and colleagues helped me in such an incredibly tough time.
have had both horrible and great bosses. at my job my immediate supervisor was mostly difficult to work for but her boss, who was the division's head, was wonderful. even though she didn't work in the same building or even came into our office regularly she definitely had her fingers on the pulse of the employees. when i had to put my dog down she found out & sent me home for the rest of the day & the next day as well as giving me bereavement pay. i ended up being medically retired from the job but before that happened she would regularly ask how i was doing. one time there was a change in my meds which literally put me to sleep. my super sent a copy of the reprimand for sleeping on the job for her signature. her response: apparently she came down with a small blanket, covered me up, turned off my lights & left instructions to let me be as well as calling her when i woke up or at end of day-which ever came first-as she wanted to make sure i was able to drive home.
I worked for an online Pharmacy. I had a house fire lost everything . My supervisor gave me all the time i needed to get things straight with the insurance company and contractors. I was paid all the days i took off with out using nay PTO or sick time,
I've just realised how many of these would also be done or possible at my place of work, and now I need to get a little appreciation gift for my boss. :) Our team is always there for each other, so whenever one member can only give 50% or even 0% the others have their back. It's so little that means so much.
