They did. It was called Boomerang. In '92, it started off just showing old cartoons. In 2000, it started mixing in the Cartoon Network classics. As part of the WB merger they decided to rebrand and the channel now makes and runs remakes. If you see a really bad Scooby Doo or Powerpuff girls remake, it's Boomerang.

This is cute as h*'ll. When I was a kid, we watched our cat sitting at the end of our sidewalk, just hanging out and playing with a skunk. Cats know how to "handle" them. Why do dogs have to be such jerks and get themselves sprayed?

The original book from Germany could have been based on a true story. It warms my heart to think so.
Because nostalgia focuses so much on memories of how things used to be, both real and imagined, it’s important to keep track of what is a cherished memory and what is a specific, focused-tested set of concepts put together to evoke a specific memory. As cynical as it might seem, politicians, movements and advertisers are all wise to the idea of nostalgia as a method to manipulate people.
The “return to the good, old days” is a common promise for many politicians, and many products will try to associate themselves with potential consumers’ childhoods. Little reminders of childhood do often come with a comforting wave of emotions, just make sure that you don’t let people hijack it to sell you anything.

I recall the smell of all the art supplies. Paints, markers, crayons, the wood smell from the freshly sharpened colored pencils... you did not need to deliberately huff or abuse these to appreciate them. Having them out meant a low stress outlet for creativity.

And the other day I was wondering how to find an electrician since we don’t have the yellow pages anymore, I don’t remember when or how we stopped using the phonebooks. Psychologists believe that in certain “doses,” it’s actually pretty important to our mental health. Think of it this way, when current circumstances don’t provide joy, your brain has this nifty little ability to just reach into the past and scoop up things that made you happy before. There might be diminishing returns, but hey, it’s a start.

I think the first time I was left alone by my mom I was just reading a book on the couch and she basically said, "keep doing what you're doing, don't answer the door or the phone"- I was about 10, I think. My parents knew if they parked me somewhere with my nose in a book, that I wouldn't even know they were gone.
To maintain the metaphor of nostalgia-as-medication, it is possible to “take” too much. After all, if you feel the past was too good, you might end up longing just to return instead of focusing on the present. The Germans, as always, have a term for this, called “Sehnsucht,” which you can now use as a complicated and pretentious way to talk about longing, desire, yearning, and craving.

I don't understand how those are simultaneously so horrible and yet so great.
The origin of “Sehnsucht” (capitalized because the Germans capitalize every noun) is “suffering,” which is ultimately what someone would probably feel if they have trapped themselves in the thought that things will never be as good as they used to be. However, some psychologists believe that over time, this emotion can help a person start to develop and plan out the steps to actually improve things.

Completely understandable. It’s an overhead projector. So teachers would somehow make clear worksheets (I don’t actually know where those came from) and they’d put it on this and the picture would be on the board. And they’d write in them in dry erase markers.

Oof... I hate these things. Well at least the thick plastic cover sheets. They'd hold down paper so it stayed flat. Plus you could write on them with special pens. When we'd get in trouble, our teacher would hold us after school to clean them. They'd be in a tub, about 100 of them, submerged in water. I would always leave with thick plastic cuts all over my hands. It was brutal.

I was so lucky and didn't know it at the time. I got to order $20 worth of books each time, basically all of them that I wanted. My order was always the biggest. Loved to read and it gave me an appetite for learning that made me very successful in life.

No! This isn't the book fair (although those were awesome) this is one of the some how double side printed tissue paper thin book order forms. Color came off in your hands were oddly indestructible and great for silly putty!
And speaking of social media, you have probably seen how, for example, Meta products like Facebook and the aforementioned Instagram have “memory” functions that will randomly show you images from the past, normally on their one-year anniversary. This could of course be a bit misguided, as many people have documented randomly getting images from an illness or a breakup a year ago.

Times were much simpler back then. Sometimes I wish I could go back, if only for a few minutes.
Other companies do their best to tap into this feeling as well. The Nokia 3310 phone was legendary for a variety of reasons, but it seems its reputation for being indestructible goes beyond the physical, as the company relaunched it in 2017. The phone seems like stone-age technology compared to any random smartphone from the last few years, but people do want to relive that two-tone snake game and the feeling of pressing some buttons.

With the ice cream, we actually had cones that were shaped to hold square cuts. Dad would peel the cardboard off and use a huge knife to slice through. Now they only make cones that are good for scoops, not nearly as decadent at all. It was especially fancy when it was the Neopolitan, as the containers looked like paint brushes.
“Stranger Things” is another case-in-point, where much of the appeal is an idealized image of the 80s, alongside many of the tropes and cliches of 80s children's movies, such as the iconic “ET.” The show was a brilliant move by Netflix, as it managed to both attract gen x viewers who wanted to relive a past era while simultaneously creating nostalgia among younger viewers, a sort of self-perpetuating false memory of the past.

Who remembers when you had a phone line in the house and the phone companies had a set fee for local calls and charged you for long distant calls during prime hours. But if you called after a certain time, I believe in my area it was after 11 pm, the rate would drop.

I still use a trackball rather than a mouse. It’s still incredibly satisfying popping the ball out and peeling the crud off the contacts. Highly recommended.

One time, the gunk build up was SO bad that I pulled the ball out and I couldn't see anything stuck to the ball - smooth surface. But then I realized that smooth surface was the dirt/gunk and I 'peeled' it like an orange and the ball worked properly again. In my defense, as best I can recall that one was not my mouse. I used to work on other people's computers. Though at times my own mouse ball got pretty bad.

I never even saw a computer until I started work using one - an IBM mainframe at that. On the job training was the norm in those days, as hardly anybody had any sort of experience.

I was telling my kids about how when I first started school the school had ONE computer and each class got a turn of it for a week. There was even a special unveiling assembly held to show it to everyone and special monitors in Year 6 in charge of transporting it to the designated classroom each week. It was some sort of Apple thing and had original PrintShop and Muppetville.

Miss these, used to get a small allowance and me and my siblings would put in for an xtra movie from blockbuster or hollywood video (still have both member cards!) Parents would get themselves a few, we'd pick ours, then the xtra! Then it was microwave popcorn and the cheap little caesera or pizza hut with the book reading coupons! So good after our bedtime bath we did that almost every Saturday/sunday

I had many of my birthdays at our little town’s bowling alley. Or a sleepover in my basement with crepe paper streamers we’d tear down and tie around our head and wrists to be teenage mutant ninja turtles. We had vinyl seats in our car in the early 80's. In the summer we had to put a blanket down to keep from burning our legs. We tried to remember to tuck the buckles under the blanket when we got out but sometimes we forgot.

I worked at a video store in the 90s, and people would sit on chairs in the store waiting for copies of movies. One guy had me crawling into the drop box hole every time someone made a drop, which was every 5 seconds till his copy came in. No lie.

Well yesterday in Waterbury Ct a group of teenagers all 15 and under stole a car and blew through a red light at 2:30 am, hit another vehicle and killed themselves. Fortunately, the people in the other vehicle only suffered minor injuries. It would have been better if they were online.

Wowww forgot about this, now I can remember I was the leader of the bunch quite a bit cause I was one of those goody two shoes kids in class xD So I was always getting a “reward sticker” on the chart, from what I can remember by the time I got to 3rd grade teachers had done away with this, I couldn’t care regardless, was too young to think anything of it. But this just brought back such memories of something I totally forgot about 👌🏼

We didn't do this; instead, we got bribed. Our class had one of those plastic drawer things, like you put screws and nails, etc. in. We were all assigned a drawer, and when we did something good, we got a marble. Collect 30 marbles and we got to go get a prize out of a giant box in the back of the room.

My 7 yo absolutely has half of the stuff on the left. I also watched him play for over an hour with colored squares I cut and put into little Tupperware containers. And when we go to church he spends the hour having crayons battle one another. But he does love his Switch, worst gift I ever got him. Great console, terrible to get him into it.

To some extent, yes it's true, and (as a "todays kid") I wish it wasn't. However, if this tech had been coming out when you were a teen and your brain was addicted to dopamine input you would also be addicted to the screens. It's a hard habit to break especially when more things are going virtual.

Gave a friends kids supersoakers for Chrismas one year (8ish and 10ish). You'd think I'd given them math textbooks from the amount of enthusiasm they showed. But give them a DVD or a PS game and they're over the moon. *sigh* edit: Changed textboxes to textbooks... too much programming 0_o

Even now they're all jumbled. Nintendo switch and Xbox have A+B swapped and X+Y swapped, so when I use one for a while then I'm disoriented when I use the other

The worst part is they are pretty much standardized. 2 analog sticks that also function as buttons. A d-pad on the left, 4 buttons in a diamond pattern on the right, and 2 buttons on each shoulder. The only real difference is the ergonomics and what each company calls each button

I've had younger people laughing at me during a multiplayer game because of this. -_-’ We're just taling like 10-7 yrs younger, but still. My brain is programmed for playstation as it was the only thing my parents would let me have, and whenever I go for other controllers my brain goes on the fritz. 🥲

I remember finding the Pepperidge Farm meat snack gift pack my parents bought for someone for Christmas back in the 80's, I was stupid enough to think I could pick one of those strawberry candies out of it and they wouldn't notice. They had to buy a whole new one, I was grounded for like a week and didn't get any of the meat and cheeses inside.

That's the little kids version. I got "A Wizard of Earthsea" and "The Hobbit" from order sheets like this. Alternative titles I never wanted to read were "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues" and "Been Down So Long It Looks Like Up To Me."

These terrified me as a kid, but I still had loads of them. You can make them jump up by turning them inside out and pushing them on the floor. You can make yourself jump by not getting rid of them fast enough after turning them inside out.

Kids still use these! I tutored 1st graders a few years and ago and these were part of the required school supplies. The kids were more interested in making towers than doing math with them though. :)

Skeletor.. In India, till 90s. we have the govt run channel called Doordarshan. But we had the best of shows and cartoons. Sunday morning were cartoon time... He-man was one such cartoon show. Since not everyone had TV, our house had the kids come in the morning to see the cartoons and all...

I'm a late ish gen z kid and I understand a majority of this stuff, half of it because I went to a poorish, small, private Catholic school for 2-5, now 6-12 I'm in a richer public school, which was a culture shock on its own from the shared Chromebooks and the computer lab to having our own frickin frackin MacBooks.
