The magical and mystical world Professor J.R.R. Tolkien created constantly inspired people to create something new. From Game of Thrones and Harry Potter to Led Zeppelin and Star Wars – we would be deprived of so many great films, TV shows, songs, and literature if not for the genius of The Lord of The Rings.
But amazing art is not the only thing Tolkien's world inspires. The lore serves as inspiration for the vast amount of memes and jokes as well. That's how pages like The Rings Of Power Memes Club are born. So here is a selection of the top-tier memes from their page to enjoy with your second breakfast!
Bored Panda got in touch with the creator of this group, Aman Verma. He was kind enough to have short chat with us, so be sure to check it out down below!
We also contacted Tolkienist Nick Polk. He is the production editor for Mallorn the academic journal of The Tolkien Society and the creator of the Tolkien Pop! Substack. Nick kindly agreed to talk with us more about memeing The Lord of the Rings and the role of humor in Tolkien's world. Read our conversation with him below as well!

The Rings Of Power Memes Club currently has 54k Tolkien enthusiasts who come to the page for some daily LOTR meme content. Its creator, Aman Verma, says that the page is a solo project. He says that the allure of the LOTR world is not just childhood nostalgia for 2000s kids. He says that many people have a real, emotional bond to the franchise.
Verma told Bored Panda that he chose to make a Lord of the Rings meme page because he wanted to carry on its legacy online. That's why he hypes up The Rings of Power show that's streaming on Amazon. He says that for the old fans, it will probably take some time to accept the show. Verma himself is excited for season two, as well as for the recently announced The Hunt for Gollum.

For me, Sherlock got "killed" because Sherlock is such a d*ck and Watson turned more stupid the further along the series got. I loved the first season! And I liked the second. Third was already ... eh. Obviously, Sherlock is the smarter one but if a character only exists to show how smart the other one is, that's just ... as bad as the books. I liked the Watson we met first!

Someone picks up a cursed ring, passes it to his heir. Heir and friends risk life and limb running around with it in the wild. The wise, rather than having the eagles fly the thing in, send heir and friends to destroy ring on foot. Lots of fighting, walking, running, and sailing. Very few taters. Batman sacrifices his own life to see heir succeed. Heir refuses, and ring is accidentally destroyed when stolen. Heir and friends go home, and take out the trash.

The world J.R.R. Tolkien created is so vast and complex that scholars dedicate their lives to exploring it. One such enthusiast is Nick Polk, the creator of the Tolkien Pop! Substack and editor for Mallorn, the academic journal of The Tolkien Society. Nick tells us that his journey into the LOTR fandom began in the late 1990s when he watched the animated version of The Hobbit at his grandma's.
"I watched it as a kid and loved it. I had no idea that it was connected to a wider universe and was unaware that J.R.R. Tolkien even existed. I even colored a picture of a Leprechaun, named him Dwalin, and gave him a blue beard in primary school!"
"Fast forward to the release of The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, my family and I fell in love with the movies and saw The Return of the King in theaters together. From there, I played the tie-in video games and rewatched the movies many, many times."

My local store just did a major revamping several weeks ago. Produce is still near the entrance, and the deli and bakery counters (not very easy to move) are in the same place, but I think everything else got moved at least one or two aisles from where it used to be, and some stuff got moved from one end to the other. There are still a lot of people wandering around and looking confused.

The local grocers do this all the time, like every couple of months, so I wander around the store aimlessly. On the bright side, I do need the exercise.
When Nick grew up and started studying at university, Tolkien suddenly came back into his life. "I was given the advice from one of my professors to read books that I wanted to read in addition to my schoolwork. I chose The Hobbit and immediately went to The Lord of the Rings books for the first time. I devoured them, discovered The Silmarillion and The Tolkien Society, and have been a Tolkien freak ever since."

I once broke my rule of not picking up hitchhikers. It was a burning hot day, and at a freeway on ramp stood Santa Claus, in complete outfit except wearing shorts rather than pants. He said he needed a ride to Sausalito and since I was going that way, figured it was no big deal. We had an interesting conversation along the way, although more out there than what one might have with your average person. When we arrived at his house, which actually had written across the front of it "Santa's House", he began getting out of my car, and as I looked over at him exiting, I was surprised to see his cohonies hanging out of the back of his shorts! I had a good laugh once my nausea subsided.

Last time I searched for what was physically wrong with me, it came up with erosive osteoarthritis, a degenerative condition that is normally in a different place than where I have it, and more often affects postmenopausal women (I'm a 55 yr old cisgendered male). I laughed it off and went to the doctors' office. I told them what I found and laughed about I shouldn't look up what's wrong with me because it's always worse than what it really is. At the end of the exam, I asked, "So, what is it." It was erosive osteoarthritis.

One thing about Tolkien and The Lord of the Rings trilogy is that many people who aren't fans know its memes. How many times has the picture of Boromir with the line "One does not simply..." been used for something completely Tolkien-unrelated?
Or the iconic viral "They're taking the hobbits to Isengard" song? Polk argues there might be two reasons for their wide reach: the trilogy has an iconic status among 2000s kids and there are just so many great one-liners in the films.

It depends. Adopting a rescue isn't expensive where I live. They are great horses and loyal. Stables, riding area and 4 well sized pasture is €150 per month. Bedding €100. Feed €50 per month, oncluding hay. Mucking and maintenance is DIY. Most expensive is a well fitting saddle, which comforts the back of the horse as well as my bum. And the vet, if the independent pony lady did something inconvenient. And time, at least 2 to 3 hours per day, every day.

I can almost tolerate the $3.31 I pad two weeks ago, especially if they'd stop bouncing it up and down every few days. The $4.89 I paid last week on trip to the west coast s a whole other thing.
Nick also believes LOTR memes are so prevalent because they contain many catchy one-liners. "The 'One does not simply...' meme is one of the original internet memes that birthed memes as we know them today. Off the top of my head, here are just a handful that most, if not all, movie fans will know: 'Meat's back on the menu, boys!'; 'Alright then, keep your secrets'; 'It comes in pints?'; 'That still only counts as one!'"
Nick says that many of these are funny in the context of the movie, but they also are relatable enough to make people laugh in the real world.

Nick says that The Lord of the Rings, like many other fandoms, brings people together. "Fans share artwork, theories, and deep-dives into the lore. Memes are an extension of this fan activity." He argues that meme-making is one of the easiest ways fans can be creative.
"Technology has made it easier to access scenes from movies and TV to put together a collage-like meme. TikTok and Instagram Reels have also made making video memes as accessible as possible. Gaps that would have made picture and video production difficult for the average person have been closed."

Some people think there's not much humor in Tolkien's works or that the professor didn't have much of a sense of humor. But that couldn't be further from the truth. While his humor might've been on the drier side, Tolkien actually loved to laugh. Nick quotes Tolkien's biographer, Humphrey Carpenter: "He [Tolkien] could laugh at anybody, but most of all at himself, and his complete lack of any sense of dignity could and often did make him behave like a riotous schoolboy."

since people have mentioned most of the stuff already I'll chime in with he nearly got blow up in that scene at the black gate because the set had active landmines left over from some war. He also almost drowned in the scene after he goes over a cliff because he didn't want to use a stunt double. He also learned elvish and used a real steel sword. That man is awesome.

I know someone who had a lot of tattoos with languages from movies etc. He has one really nice piece on his arm in elvish and he always tells people it says something I can't recall right now but was a proverb. But turns out that's not what it says at all and actually says something along the lines of "he he can read this, will be my husband" or something along those lines. We were in a bar one night and this girl comes up to him and says to him " I take it a she who reads that isn't eligible?" and they had a good laugh about it though it went over our heads somewhat. He did however marry her brother and we only heard the story about the night he 1st met his sister at their wedding!

If they'd move Middle Earth west, they'd discover hown uncannily the coast and mountains of Gondor are shaped like Southern California, except way too big. Mordor becomes Arizona, the Gulf of Lune becomes the Columbia River, but for the absence of Baja California, the Anduin becomes the Colorado, the Sea of Rhun is a little South of the Great Salt Lake. I guess the Westward drift towards the Pacific shrank Eriador, the region between the Coastal Ranges and the Sierra Nevada/ Northwestern Rocky Mountains, but Ardor is the Inland Empire.

Unpopular opinion: I enjoyed Rings of Power. Of course it wasn't LOTR level, but it was enjoyable.

ok I'm 70% certain the 2nd picture is Fili but who's the guy in the first picture it kinda looks like Aragorn but his hair looks weird. I somewhat face blind so this could be completely off.

"The Lord of the Rings movies as the 2000s Star Wars" Shullbit. LOTR's dialogue was epic, the pretentiousness fit the story. Harrison Ford's rant to George Lucas in 1977 about SW dialogue STILL holds true: "You can write this sh~t George, but you can't say it!"

I agree, but I think you're unfair to the original Star Wars trilogy. Throughout TOT, the characters are on an epic quest. Only when the mysticism is replaced by mundane politics in the prequels does the dialog become unbearable. Lucas did not become lousy in the prequels, but he did exit his wheelhouse.

Boyfriend and I just started re-watching the series (the extended director's cut!!!) so finding this right now is perfect 😂 I was a single-digits child when the movies came out, and remember seeing them in theatres. I have fond memories of my mother reading the books to us before the movies came out, too

I recently came across a notion about Gollum that I really liked: Gollum really is largely innocent. Not heroically so like Samwise, but as innocent as a typical hobbit. So innocent, in fact, that he was useless to the ring, a sort of prison for it. It could not motivate him to do any evil, other than to covet it for its beauty. So for centuries it lie in the dark heart of a mountain, all but powerless, safer than it would be even in Lothlorien or Rivendell. For Gollum to be truly evil, the ring had to completely cleave his personality into a disassociated, alien oppressor. All the while, he led the hobbitses towards Mt Doom. Perhaps the ring thought it was drawing them all closer to Sauron, but Gollum was not ignorant of Frodo's quest.

I just got a box set with The Hobbit and the LoTR trilogy in it. And thus, the would us sending me an unusually high number of encounters with LoTR/The Hobbit references.
