You feed him, play with him, take care of him, and make sure that he has everything he needs to live a happy, fulfilling life. And what does he give you in return? If you’re lucky, you receive affection, biscuits, and purrs. But in reality, the majority of us get plenty of messes to clean up…

We took a trip to the My Cat Is a [Jerk] group on Facebook and gathered some of their funniest posts below. There’s no question that these kitties are adorable. Not really jerk behavior. If he was using his stuffed mouse to try and get the restaurant shut down on health violations, then that would be a jerk move.

To learn more about My Cat Is a [Jerk], we got in touch with one of the community's admins, Muhammad Asnan Haider. He was kind enough to have a chat with Bored Panda and reveal how this group began in the first place.

"The group started very casually, honestly, out of a shared joke among cat lovers," the creator noted. "Anyone who lives with a cat knows they can be loving one moment and absolute menaces the next. The idea was to create a space where people could laugh about those moments without judgment."

"Watching it grow has been both surprising and incredibly rewarding. What began as a small, funny corner of the internet turned into a global community bonded by humor and shared experiences with our very mischievous cats," Muhammad continued.

There's no way that cat is homeless, fur is in very good condition. However it may come from a home where there is too much noise or other pets that it doesn't get on with. Many cats have second (or third, or fourth) homes.

Cared-for cats, even if they are technically "strays" or "homeless", will keep themselves clean and their coat in good condition. If this catto lives in OP's garden, he has shelter and safety, and OP might even be feeding him. So the cat has the spare energy and time to keep himself clean.

Next, we asked the admin what the members of the group are like. "The community is extremely active and engaged," Muhammad shared. "People don’t just post photos—they share stories, jokes, and genuinely relatable moments. There’s a strong sense of camaraderie, and members are usually very supportive of one another."

"Moderation is definitely necessary due to the size of the group, but for the most part, people understand the vibe: lighthearted, respectful, and cat-centric humor," he continued. "Thankfully, the community helps self-regulate a lot."

We also wanted to know if the creator had any favorite posts that he had ever seen shared in the group. "It’s nearly impossible to pick just one, but posts where cats are caught mid-chaos always stand out," Muhammad says. "Knocking over glasses, sitting proudly in places they absolutely shouldn’t be, or giving that unmistakable 'no regrets' look straight at the camera. Those moments perfectly capture the spirit of the group and never fail to make people laugh."

Finally, the creator added what he believes makes the community so special. "It allows people to laugh at the chaos of pet ownership together," he told Bored Panda. "It’s a reminder not to take things too seriously and to appreciate the humor in everyday moments—even when your cat is being a complete menace."

If she doesn't want to come in, you can build her a cat shelter. Get a larger plastic storage box, a hairdryer to soften the plastic, and cut a hole/entrance about 6-inches up from the bottom. Put some straw or a blanket in and how about that - you have a cat shelter.

Many cat owners have complicated relationships with their pets. One moment, your precious little kitty will be sleeping on your chest, looking like an absolute angel. Then five minutes later, they might be jumping on the shelves, trying to knock down every knick-knack you own. Or they’ll be perfect all day, then decide to have zoomies and wreak havoc on your apartment all night.

When you adopt a cat, you have to understand that you’re agreeing to having a little menace in your home. They won’t always be perfectly behaved, but they will be adorable and entertaining. It’s a tradeoff you have to be willing to accept. But according to Animal Behavior College, these little felines aren’t actually jerks; they’re just misunderstood.

When we see our cats exhibiting mischievous behavior, it’s easy to take it personally. You might feel like they’re doing this intentionally to anger you or get a reaction out of you. But the thing is, children and dogs often act the same way. In fact, even adults sometimes unintentionally annoy others. So we have to remember that it’s not being done maliciously. Your cat may be smart, but they’re probably not calculated enough to try to ruin your life.

Oftentimes, a cat behaves in a certain way to communicate. For example, they might actually be in pain. By acting out, or acting out of character, your kitty might be trying to tell you that they need to visit a vet. Don’t berate them for doing their business outside of their litter box or hissing at you when you touch their stomach. Consider if there’s something deeper, and potentially dangerous, going on.

I often see things like this online, where either the cat claims the dog's bed and the dog tries in vain to fit in the smaller cat bed, or (like here) sleeps on the floor. Why does no one ever think of what seems to me to be an obvious solution? If you have N pets, you buy N+1 pet beds, ALL BIG ENOUGH FOR YOUR LARGEST PET! Then it doesn't matter if the cat takes the 'dog's bed'. There's another, identical bed that the dog will fit into.

Bill, I've had large-breed dogs and cats simultaneously for decades. My two current dogs, both large-breed (GSD mix and Belgian Malinois) both have MANY beds in the house, all sized for large dogs. I can guarantee you that there will be a cat on most of them at any given time (I have 6 cats), with one dog curled on the floor nearby. That dog could go to another bed. Both dogs know they have multiple beds. They CHOOSE not to go to the other beds XD Both dogs love cats (and the cats love them) so they are totally fine with the arrangements. (The cats also have plenty of cat beds on the floors, and cat perches/seats in the windows/higher up/cat trees/etc. as well.)

Another reason why your kitty might be acting like a jerk is the fact that they’re simply bored. When teenagers don’t have any other way to occupy their time, they tend to start taking risks and acting out. Cats are the same way. If they don’t have enough toys, and nobody is helping them get their energy out, cats can become restless. Instead of becoming frustrated with your pet who keeps climbing all over your bookshelf, provide them with something else to do.

It’s also common for cats’ behavior to change when they start smelling something strange. Have you ever noticed your kitty making a funny face with their mouth wide open after sniffing stinky socks or a strong cup of coffee? A cat’s sense of smell is about 14 times stronger than our own, so they can pick up on scents much faster than we can. Plus, they might have a much different opinion on what smells nice and what doesn’t. If you’re burning a new candle or trying out a new room spray, keep an eye on your cat’s behavior. They might be trying to tell you that they don’t approve.

    "Dave's not here."

Something else to keep in mind before judging your cat’s behavior is the fact that most kitties really don’t like change. If you’ve recently moved, brought a new pet into your household, hosted guests, or even changed the layout of your furniture, it can be impossible to predict how your cat will react. Don’t be too hard on them if they start acting out. Give them some time to adjust to the changes, and if their behavior still doesn’t improve, then it might be time to address it.

I should have tried this before buying the ridiculously expensive microchip cat feeder.

Sometimes, when my cat is being naughty, I can’t help but laugh. I know he doesn’t mean to upset me, and he does look hilarious while running through the apartment with a corn tortilla in his mouth. But if you’re really struggling with your cat’s behavior, and you’re not sure where to turn, Love Animal Hospital recommends providing plenty of scratching posts for your pet. Without anywhere to let out their stress, frustration, or energy, they might turn to furniture or valuables.

Our twins were the same way. Oh, you mean the cat.

It’s also a great idea to reward your cat when they exhibit good behavior. At the end of the day, they’re just animals. And everyone likes to be rewarded for their efforts. Have plenty of treats around to surprise your little guy or gal with when you're proud of how they're acting. The more you encourage their good behavior, the more likely they’ll be to repeat it in the future.

In addition to what Sian mentioned in their comment - cats like the Sphinx breed NEED to be bathed regularly. Additionally, elderly cats may not be able to groom themselves properly once they reach a certain age, and need to be bathed to remove urine/feces and help keep them clean. It will not hurt a cat to bathe it gently and carefully with a cat-safe shampoo. I bathed my old gray cat every other week once she got elderly and could not keep herself clean. She didn't melt or explode.

Worth repeating here - Why does no one ever think of what seems to me to be an obvious solution? If you have N pets, you buy N+1 pet beds, ALL BIG ENOUGH FOR YOUR LARGEST PET! Then it doesn't matter if the cat takes the 'dog's bed'. There's another, identical bed that the dog will fit into.

Again, see my other reply - I've got multiple beds for all of my pets (6 cats, 2 large dogs) and they are happy to let the cats lay on the big beds ;) There are other dog beds that they could go lay on, but they choose not to.

I socialise cats at a shelter. If a cat smacks me, I go over what happened to find what triggered it. I might take a few smacks before I find the reason, but I'm not giving up on them. Sometimes it's something that seems so small to us, like making sure that your hand is low when you reach out to them or keeping a hand out of sight so they don't think you're going to grab them. You have to earn their trust and sometimes that takes time.

We just had the door to our deck replaced this summer, with a nice sliding glass door with built in sliding screen door. Lady Grey, our grumpy matron cat, would sit by the door staring outside. A neighbor cat would come by, sit up next the door, and they would yowl and spit at each other, with the magical glass force field keeping them apart. A week later, I discovered that the neighbor cat had clawed the daylights out of the screen. *sigh*

One time when Stilgar was just a puppy, soon after he'd started to show signs of distemper, I left him in his playpen in my backyard for maybe 20 minutes while I fed the cats. I walked back out into my backyard to find that not only had Stilly escaped the playpen, he'd apparently also found my blackberry and boysenberry bushes and had eaten himself into a food coma. Of course, when I found him, he was laying on his side, eyes closed, with red smears all over his muzzle and neck and on the concrete around him, so I freaked out and yelled his name. He jumped up, and that's when I saw a few half-eaten berries underneath his muzzle and realized what had happened XD

Preacher (my tuxedo boy) once ate most of my mammogram referral form, back in 2022. I had to take the ripped, ragged, half-eaten paper to the imaging center the next day and say, with complete seriousness, "My cat ate my paperwork." I felt like I was trying to use the old "my dog ate my homework" excuse XD Luckily the staff was pretty cool about it and it wasn't an issue XD

My cat George literally ate my homework once (I had to grow bean sprouts in soil with increasingly more salt to see how much salt would make them not grow) and for my final report I had pictures of her next to the victims and my teacher did not find it funny at all. Poor sense of humor that one!

Friend of mine had a cat ('Boromir') who kept bringing home birds, so they put a bell on his collar. Took him less than 24 hours to bring home another bird - while he was still proudly wearing the bell.

Pray he doesn't go into Tasmanian Devil mode. I have a rescue cat (kitten then) that would fiercely attack my legs when I was at my most vulnerable. I was grateful he didn't set his sights any higher. Thankfully, he has mellowed out. A lot. (We got him a rescue kitten for a playmate.)

Who has highly-toxic, will-absolutely-kíll-a-cat ONIONS growing in their house when they own a cat? That's shítty pet ownership. And no, neither cats nor dogs "instinctively" know what plants are toxic to them and won't eat the ones that are toxic; that's a myth. PLEASE check the toxicity of ALL your houseplants (or even bouquets/vased flowers) if you have a cat or dog. Some plants are so toxic that a cat can die just from licking the pollen off of its fur or drinking some of the water in the vase (if they're cut flowers.)
