@Echo: you haven't paid any attention at all, have you? The self-pay patient isn't paying that theoretical amount either. They're paying a much lower rate. Or rather, more often, they're never paying at all, not even that substantially reduced price. @Coco: Medicare was what every governmental centralized command-and-control system devolves into. And I mean everywhere. Bureaucrats and bean-counters who have never seen the patient and don't give a s**t about her are given the control over whether and when a thing happens. They use delays and denials and red-tape to save money, because in the end that's their measure of success.

Without Medicare and Medicaid, the most vulnerable - the elderly and our those with the lowest incomes, would have no access to health care because they'd have no way to pay for it. And that access is extremely limited. I highly suspect you don't know anyone who has ever needed to rely on it, or you'd have a completely different attitude. It's not a perfect program. But it would probably work better if the Congress and Administration supported it, rather than wanted to cut it and make the lives of those who rely on it even more miserable.

Before the ACA came out, I had better health care that I paid out of pocket for (along with catastrophic insurance) for a third the cost of what I had to pay on ACA. my doctor loved me because I paid...you know... on time.

@Echo: You think it's any better with Medicare? Or in, for instance, Canada? Imagine this: instead of the pain being in your shoulder, it's in your chest. You have angina, and your body is loudly telling you that you're just that close to dying. And then they tell you you can have your bypass... but you're on the 6 month waiting list. Yes, insurance has gotten worse and worse. But the reason why is a problem shared (and magnified hugely) by single payor centralized government run systems. Medicare discovered it first, and the insurance companies merely follower: red tape is cheaper than doing something. When I was in medical school >20 years ago, this was explained to me as an age-old problem that would only ever get worse. In that time, it's only ever gotten worse.

I completely understand. I am one of those people that has crappy insurance. So sometimes I just pay outright so I don't have to go through waiting and getting rejected. Healthcare is still over priced. And I meant the doctor has a soul so they just charge them their out of pocket cost x2. Which compared to say 8000 would be 500 or something. I needed an MRI done to determine the type of treatment that was needed for whatever was wrong my shoulder. I scheduled an appt 2 week from my initial visit because it takes time to get approval from insurance. All the while I am in pain. I call a day before my MRI(2 weeks later) and they say it was rejected by my insurance. I figured it was like 5000 so they were fighting the price. Come to find out my cost was only 286. So I waited all that time and I could have just paid.

Why wouldn't you charge 8000 if you know the insurance will argue it down to 4000. So if you have no insurance apparently they have some kind of soul and offer you the 100% profit amount.

Our healthcare costs are a lot lower than in the US, but our overall health, wellbeing and happiness rank way higher.

If the wealthiest in the U.S., especially corporations had to pay their fair share in taxes, rather than getting by on tax breaks and loopholes, we'd be fine. Amazon for example, paid 0 in taxes this year. They did nothing illegal. The tax laws written by Congress are set so that corporations and the wealthiest have so many loopholes and exemptions that they can get away with paying pretty much nothing. The middle class and the poor pay for the rich to keep getting richer. They get great medical care. We get nothing.
