I Wrapped A (Nearly) Perfect Present By Accident
Unfortunately THATS their domain, the wrapping of presents!
Load More Replies...As the gift wrapper at the office during the holiday season, this makes me so happy! I love it when it turns out like this!
My stepmom did these kind of perfect wrappers. I even cut some of them gently and saved the box. Decorate with them at Christmas. I really miss her, she died young in leukemia.
I was the dedicated gift-wrapper bc of my skills, but I've been outdone by this perfection.

The Mildly Interesting subreddit currently has 25 million members and counting. And if you look at the photos people are sharing in this community, they’re mostly images of life’s everyday moments. But what makes them so compelling?
According to Charlotte-based photographer and Cannavo Studios founder Adam Cannavo, the mundanity allows people a momentary escape from their own lives.
“They’re mundane yet just odd enough to make your brain stop scrolling while still being totally relatable,” he told Bored Panda. “These are new but familiar images that resonate with lots of people.”
I Folded This Origami From A Single Sheet Of Paper, No Cuts, No Glue, Just Folding
Job well done, I am impressed. I have enjoyed folding a bit of origami myself but nothing quite this complicated.

🙃 though slightly jealous and amazed it is even possible!
It wouldn't be origami if it had cuts or glue. Anyway fantastic fold
A Few Of My Meals At A General Hospital In The Netherlands
I literally got sick trying to eat the gross, bland, putrid smelling food in the hospital a couple of weeks ago, and my taste buds haven't been right since. It just kills me to see some obviously delicious food served in a hospital.
I have had more than my fair share of time in hospital in the UK (I'm ok, just been a bit unlucky). While in for surgery last year, I noted how much better the food was than I remembered. But it was still poor. Tiny portions of nutritionally vacant pre-prepared c**p. Tasted better, but nothing more. I love the NHS for all they have done for me. But food is chronically under-invested, despite so much evidence showing how much better the outcomes are with decent food.
My trust is pretty good (I used to joke that when he was in hospital my dad was eating way better than me - I wouldn't know personally because I was nil by mouth or liquids only for almost all my stay) but the Dutch are on another level.
Load More Replies...I have never encountered this in a hospital. I live in the Netherlands 😅 must be a private clinic.
This is not in the Netherlands Im from the Netherlands and never had this in a hospital
Funny, I don't remember food like that during any of my hospital stays....
This hurts, although I don't begrudge anyone who's country provides health services and perks. It's just, as an American, being treated by a competent doctor without losing your life savings outweighs the slop meals our hospitals are infamous for.
Please fly me to the Netherlands should I need surgery (nothing serious)

I remember a few years ago, there were loads of headlines about how ballet dancer slippers (shoes? Pumps? Those things that have ribbons that tie up) were available in different skin colours, not just pink. Up until then, ballerinas of different ethnicity were colouring in their own footwear with make-up or bronzer.
slippers are another term for the flat shoes, pointe shoes are the other ones)
Load More Replies...Honestly, until they started making ones in brown skin tones, I didn't know they were meant to be 'skin colour'. I just thought that was the colour of the material naturally (I always preferred the fabric ones and thought the plastic were just coloured to match that). They were never close to my skin colour.
Sixty-five years ago I thought of these. It’s taken way too long to come about.

Given how these photos, with minimal context, can reach millions of people at once, that begs the question: what makes a photo stand out in this day and age, where “everyone is a photographer”?
According to Winnipeg-based wedding photographer Joel Boily, it’s more about resonance than just beauty or technical perfection.
“The best images today don’t just show you something interesting,” he said. “They make you feel something. Whether it’s emotional intimacy, perfect timing, or a flash of visual irony, the photos that stand out evoke a response deeper than a quick double-tap.”

Load More Replies...This Silver Ant I Saw Today
So dug into this and found this interesting info: Researchers at Columbia University are working on a new way to keep buildings cool. They drew inspiration from an unlikely source: a heat-tolerant species of ant called the Saharan Silver Ant, which lives in the scorching desert. In 2015, physics professor Nanfang Yu discovered that this ant's silvery coating of hair reflects sunlight and radiates heat back to the sky. "They are only active in the middle of the day when the surface of the desert is the hottest", explains Yu. Now, he and his colleagues have developed a paint-like material that mimics these functions. When applied to a rooftop, it reflects up to 99% of sunlight, and emits heat back to the atmosphere. Yu says that helps cool the building underneath and it does so far more effectively than white paint, which only reflects certain wavelengths of solar radiation.
It's going to take awhile to glue all those ants together.
Load More Replies...How cool is that! Is it supposed to be like that I wonder? Or do you think it got in the way of someone spray painting?
Wouldn't this cause a couple of problems though? Like if lots of houses did their roof with this stuff, wouldn't the reflection be a problem to planes/birds? Also wouldn't the heat radiated back cause more of a global warming problem? (I am not very good on thermodynamics)

Boily, on the other hand, says otherwise. According to him, the dawn of smartphone cameras devalued what a photograph means.

My Local Convenience Store Has Sky Box Diffusers Over Their Fluorescent Lights
My dentist has a huge aerial photo of our local town and the surrounding countryside. She distracts children with it, asking them to find the street where they live (and if they are too young for that, she has a few little teddy bear stickers she's hidden on it for them to find). The Muscle Atrophy On My Right Leg After Breaking My Ankle
I called mine my “chicken leg” for a while. Probably self explanatory. Thankfully they’re both roughly the same size now.
I hated mine for ages 😂 (mine from being sedentary from being set on fire etc) it’s been over 15 yrs and I still lean in the shower on my ‘good leg’ cos I was so used to it being wrapped in a bag when I did get to shower and walk again. Still uneven but it’s my own fault
Load More Replies...I only saw such effect on my old cat. She used to take walks in the garden, and our miserable excuse of a human neighbor beat her with a steel pipe, breaking her hind leg. It was in a cast for weeks, and when that came off, her little leg looked like a chopstick. (Still outlived her vile attacker by a decade though.)

The Walls In My 100y Irish Cottage Are 2ft Thick
The insulation method of its day. I grew up in a 100+ year old stone-walled house, and as a small child I was always confused why other people didn't just... keep things on their windowsills. I was disappointed to eventually discover that most modern construction does not come with foot-deep windows.
My window ledges are massive, they hold many many things and about half of them have beds on it for my cat to enjoy watching other animals he would run away from in an instant without the protection of the glass
Load More Replies...My walls are like this, it’s currently hot as a small sun outside, and I work from home. Everyone is moaning about it being too hot, I am here at my desk “working” wrapped in a blanket living my best life. 2ft thick solid stone walls are awesome!
I'm currently sitting in a former mill built in 1706, my father bought it in the 60s. Can confirm, thick walls are AWESOME in summer.
I live in a converted barn, built in 1875, the walls are 3 foot thick.
The kitchen wall is about 75cm and the wall between the living room and bedroom is just over a metre. I'll leave you to convert it into old fashioned measurements. Between my bed and the router is about four metres, but since one of them is a stone wall with rubble infill, my signal is "barely present". It's yet another day of thirtyfuckwhat outside, but inside it's pleasantly cool inside. A regular desk fan keeps the air moving but it's not the stifling that is making everything turn brown outside.
I lived in a 100+ year old carriage house. The walls were 3 bricks thick with plaster and lathe on the inside. It was solid but an absolute nightmare to heat. -20F outside, thermostat set to 90F with an actual temperature of 68F inside. My wife and son were in SF at 70F that day.
I have 13" thick walls because I'm at the back bottom end of a 3 story building and I'm below that and still one story above the ground. The thick walls are part of the support system and it keeps my unit cooler in summer and warmer in winter.

Load More Replies...I empathize. But things will improve now that he knows what he has to avoid.
Ooo, I feel for him. I have the same problem but we can't pinpoint what I'm allergic too. The last 3 times I was tested, I was allergic to different things each time. Rather weird but oh well.
When I went for a allergy test, I had to lie facing down and had to lie still for like twenty minutes I believe. This was over 3 decades ago though.
Don't laugh, but I bet he could fix most of that by finding out his blood type and then read the book "Eat Right 4 Your Type" and start eating the right foods. Worked for me. It really DOES matter what foods are best for what blood type you are. I'm an A and not only do I stay away from all red meats but there are certain veg, fruits, fish, etc that are good and bad. My Watermelon Was Yellow On The Inside
Yellow meated watermelons are the best! My first encounter was at a great-Aunt and Uncles house the first time I came to New Mexico when I was 8. After dinner they sliced a bunch of watermelons long-ways, and EVERYBODY got a full half of a watermelon for dessert! It's been my favorite since then! YUM!
We in the South call that a "yellow meater" (as opposed to the regular red ones). Tastes just as good chilled!
Google says yellow tastes sweeter, and more like honey. So that’s a win.
Load More Replies...I've heard those yellow melons are even better than red ones! I've never seen one in my local stores, but would love to try one sometime.
Had A Long Strand Of Hair Growing Out Of My Forehead
Ah, the strand of hair growing out of a random spot. I take great delight in plucking those.
Right. He had to know it was there and let it grow to that length. I'd have gone mad.
Load More Replies...I had one like that once, it grew out of my cheek. I pulled it out and it never came back. Bodies do weird stuff sometimes. I once had an ingrown hair on my shin, after I picked the little coil of hair out I went to pluck it out and when I pulled on it a dimple appeared around half an inch away. The dumb hair grew under my skin and surfaced half an inch away from it's root. Weird!
So my dad once went to a Halloween party wearing a hot pink nylon wig (can't remember what he was dressed up as, this was years ago) and must've swallowed a hair at some point because a few months later he had a long, neon pink hair growing out of the sole of his foot. He couldn't pull it out because he didn't want to break it off and the wig had looong hair so he simply had to live with this pink hair coming out of his foot for ages. My siblings and I had a lot of fun showing ur friends our dad's crazy pink foot hair hehe
More likely it was in his shoe and worked into the skin as a hair splinter. They are so painful!

This Restaurant Charges An 18% Living Wage Fee
Should've posted my response here because this is NOT like greenwashing. This is how all business, except hospitality, operate. You charge the customer for all your costs/overhead, which includes salaries, supplies/equipment, insurance, and profit (owner's income). This is much fairer than servers busting their butts, not getting adequate tips, and ekeing out a poverty-level living.
Load More Replies...… that’s kind of obnoxious when you could just, y’know, pay your staff better. We have hospitality workers earning around $100 AU per hour on public holidays (and most businesses will charge a PH surcharge but with wages like that, fair enough) because we actually pay our workers properly instead of expecting them to live on the decency (or otherwise) of other people. I don’t normally hop on the tip bandwagon; I get it’s cultural. But a ‘living wage’ fee? That’s just lazy.
But.... that's what happens anyway. Where do you think the money to pay staff comes from? Ultimately from the customers. This is a weird way of doing it though. But identifying that they are more expensive because the money goes to all the staff is not bad. The fact that the tip is optional is a good thing.
Load More Replies...Nah I don’t like this. Just adjust the prices to cover the running costs of the restaurant
That's literally what they did, they were just transparent about it instead of upping the food prices specifically and having people then b***h about that.
Load More Replies...So the employer is either going to underpay employees or overcharge customers….anything but tighten his own belt. That figures.
A lot of non-chain restaurants run on very, very tight margins. I appreciate them making a point of advertising that instead of tips, they just pay their staff a fair wage.
Load More Replies...Wow just pay people a standard minimum um wage like every other business does. This has got to stop.
If this was in the price, I'd be ok with it. It's what everyone else does.
Doesn't small prices and mandatory service fee make a false advertising altogether?
Are we talking about this place in particular? Because those prices are pretty much what I’d expect in Aus, but we don’t charge a living wage fee.
Load More Replies...I hate when the tips are split amongst the staff, they should go to the person the tips were given to
Then the background staff would nevet see a penny. You like your well-prepared dish? Who do you think cooked it? The server transporting it from the kitchen to your table, or the cooks, preparing dozens of them under high pressure, but still put effort in every single one?
Load More Replies...Yeah, the customer get screwed by having to help make up wages the employer should be paying. By paying this, you're only helping the employer / company make more profit.,

My Blood Vessels Pick Up More Dirt
I'm clueless so I went to the Reddit source for this image and found this: This actually gets complicated (and fascinating). You’re right that magnetism is not the answer to this particular mystery, but oxygenated blood and deoxygenated blood (as in the veins pictured here) have different magnetic properties, which actually led us to our understanding of how they carry oxygen back in the 1930s (Pauling et al.). Deoxygenated blood largely does not have anything bound to the heme iron (CO2 does not swap places with the O2), and so it is more responsive to a magnetic field!

My Mom's Pill Full Of Little Circles
I think this picture has gone around before. If I remember correctly, it's for a GI study - the rings show up on x-ray, and they can count the rings to see how your gut is moving.
Load More Replies...A friend of mine had to swallow two of these, she had a super slow bowel and intestinal delay, basically pooped once a week. Those little rings can be picked up on X-ray, that way the doctors can see how long they take to pass and if there is a significant area of obstruction.
My Pinky Toe Has Turned Sideways Over The Years
Many years of poor fitting shoes? What about the toes on the other foot?
Prolly because your big toe looks like it is sucking all the life out of the other four and the pinkie, being the smallest, has finally deflated.
This is what happens if your balance on your feet is not right. If you walk on the outer edge of your foot, your little toe will likely end up like this to some extent. People with extremely high arches tend to walk with their weight to the outer side of the foot. I have the same.
Mine have become like this. They were always slightly crooked, but now there is calloused skin on the side because it has become the bottom. I don't think it's ill-fitting shoes (though I have had to get rid of shoes recently because they don't fit right, but I only wore them a couple of times) but could be to do with my feet growing wider.
That has something to do with the tendon across the bottom of the foot. Thicker I think. Show genetic heritage for some group, can't remember which.

Neighbor’s Recycling Bin Burst Into Flames And Melted Into A Puddle Overnight. (Purple Recycling Bin On The Right For Reference)
It could be something like charcoal, but interesting fact: some things can spontaneously catch on fire. For instance hay in a hay stack, or cloth that is drenched in oil or paint. It has to do with fermentation processes that generate heat, and if it's in a closed down container it can't get rid of the heat and will catch fire. That's why massage parlors aren't allowed to keep the dirty towels with oil on them inside the building, but have to put them in a garbage container that's put far enough away from buildings. It's also a problem for farmers (hay stacks) and painters (cloth drenched in paint that contains certain oils). It's recommend to let oily/paintcovered cloth dry out in the open, folded out instead of crumped into a ball.
Those are city bins. If he really needs them, he's going to have to pay for them. I'm guessing they aren't cheap. They charge you for delivery too.

I guess it must work, but given the force exerted on the chain-sprocket intersection when steeply climbing, seems like it wouldn't.
Belt drive has been standard on some Harley Davidson motorbikes for many years. If its strong enough to for them... In fact the main reason it's not used on most pedal cycles is simply that there's no real benefit in strength, efficiency or weight to be gained, just a slightly reduced maintencance requirement,

As a swedish person I've always found it so strange that these fish are so popular abroad, like yeah we have a fish shaped sweet but they're really not at all hyped up here, and I very rarely see someone put them in their pick-and-mix bag... But I love that we're represented somehow abroad besides IKEA and meatballs lol

Had A Minor Surgery Yesterday, Sent Me Home With Narcan In Addition To My Pain Meds
Wow. Good, I guess? Just take the oxy only as needed. You know the risks.
Noone is going to take medical advice from someone on this site, and definitely not someone who doesn't realise these are copied from Reddit.
Load More Replies...In the UK you're lucky if they give you anything stronger than Ibuprofen.
Because they're more than aware how addictive these sorts of things are. There's a reason extra strong painkillers are hard to get hold of and why a*******n to these things are much lower in the UK than the USA. You can get them, but its not easy.
Load More Replies...They did the same after my knee replacement surgery. It was a bit creepy.
I got that when I was Rx'd oxycodone for pain, too. Just in case!
I'm guessing this would be in the US. I got sent home with a few Doliprane when I had minor surgery.
I had opium powder and paracetamol for a cholecystectomy, I took them only 3 days but I needed them. But oxycodone would never have been an option.

Maybe these were special bonding moments just between father and son? And he wanted to keep track of or remember them all somehow.

Dairy Queen Not Taking E-Pay Because Of Airshow
Here's what one commenter on the Reddit thread said: I know my comment will get buried, but the likely cause is the cell tower that they use for the transactions is likely overwhelmed with the patrons at the air show. They are unable to connect. If they had a way of reconfiguring their POS (point of sale) card readers to use a local wifi network attached to the internet, they could continue processing cards. Source: I've been at air shows where the local cell towers can't handle 10,000 new cell devices in the same location. Event Vendors' card transaction processing fails and cashless venues suddenly become frozen.
I've been to an airshow where yes indeed mobile phone signal was strong but the network was overwhelmed by the huge number of people. It was incredibly hard even to send a text message. Why couldn't the shop just tell the truth? 🤷
Load More Replies...I call BS on this. Supersonic flight is never authorised for air shows these days.
Correct. I did see and hear it happen once by a Blue Angel plane, not sure if it was an accident or not. Many years ago at a Seafair performance in Seattle. I grew up near an air force base. Fighter jets would routinely break the sound barrier on training flights over our town. The whole house shook. I believe they aren't allowed to do that anymore.

This Hotel Requires Men To Wear Swim Briefs Or Square Leg Swimsuits In The Pool. Boardshorts (And T-Shirts Or Rash Guards) Are Not Allowed
You should always go to the swimming pool by showering naked and putting on a swimsuit on clean skin for hygiene reasons. Cultures where nudity is taboo cannot follow hygiene rules and swimsuits are worn under clothes and you go into the pool without showering or just wet your swimsuit in the shower. I go swimming regularly and swimming teachers always emphasize hygiene rules when swimming learners from other cultures try to act against the rules. (Swimming lessons are mandatory in schools). In this Finnish swimming hall in question, burkinis are allowed but they offer showers with shower curtains and you still have to soap your skin and wash your private parts like the rest of us. You have to wet your hair and keep it tied up or alternatively you have to wear a swimming cap. If some group does not follow the rules and for this reason new rules have to be created, I do not think it is discrimination.
Load More Replies...This is horrible. For Muslim women. But also for trans men who don't want other people to see their scars from top surgery (because they feel uncomfortable about them, or because they live somewhere where it's unsafe to be out of the closet). And trans men who haven't had top surgery and nonbinary people who were born with a female body but feel horribly uncomfortable having to dress feminine. They should be allowed to wear a swimming shirt (the kind that is made of the same fabric as a bikini, that is made specifically for swimming). And also just men who don't wanna have a naked belly/chest. There's no reason that swimming shirts are unhygienic.
