My stepmom did these kind of perfect wrappers. I even cut some of them gently and saved the box. Decorate with them at Christmas. I really miss her, she died young in leukemia.

The Mildly Interesting subreddit currently has 25 million members and counting. And if you look at the photos people are sharing in this community, they’re mostly images of life’s everyday moments. But what makes them so compelling?

According to Charlotte-based photographer and Cannavo Studios founder Adam Cannavo, the mundanity allows people a momentary escape from their own lives.

I literally got sick trying to eat the gross, bland, putrid smelling food in the hospital a couple of weeks ago, and my taste buds haven't been right since. It just kills me to see some obviously delicious food served in a hospital.

I have had more than my fair share of time in hospital in the UK (I'm ok, just been a bit unlucky). While in for surgery last year, I noted how much better the food was than I remembered. But it was still poor. Tiny portions of nutritionally vacant pre-prepared c**p. Tasted better, but nothing more. I love the NHS for all they have done for me. But food is chronically under-invested, despite so much evidence showing how much better the outcomes are with decent food.

My trust is pretty good (I used to joke that when he was in hospital my dad was eating way better than me - I wouldn't know personally because I was nil by mouth or liquids only for almost all my stay) but the Dutch are on another level.

Honestly, until they started making ones in brown skin tones, I didn't know they were meant to be 'skin colour'. I just thought that was the colour of the material naturally (I always preferred the fabric ones and thought the plastic were just coloured to match that). They were never close to my skin colour.

Given how these photos, with minimal context, can reach millions of people at once, that begs the question: what makes a photo stand out in this day and age, where “everyone is a photographer”?

According to Winnipeg-based wedding photographer Joel Boily, it’s more about resonance than just beauty or technical perfection.

“The best images today don’t just show you something interesting,” he said. “They make you feel something. Whether it’s emotional intimacy, perfect timing, or a flash of visual irony, the photos that stand out evoke a response deeper than a quick double-tap.”

Everyone interprets photographs differently. Just like one person may find a specific meaning behind the “Mona Lisa” that differs from another’s. According to ScanMyPhotos.com CEO & photo archivist Mitch Goldstone, pictures that stand out often “feel unfinished” and open to interpretation.

So dug into this and found this interesting info: Researchers at Columbia University are working on a new way to keep buildings cool. They drew inspiration from an unlikely source: a heat-tolerant species of ant called the Saharan Silver Ant, which lives in the scorching desert. In 2015, physics professor Nanfang Yu discovered that this ant's silvery coating of hair reflects sunlight and radiates heat back to the sky. "They are only active in the middle of the day when the surface of the desert is the hottest", explains Yu. Now, he and his colleagues have developed a paint-like material that mimics these functions. When applied to a rooftop, it reflects up to 99% of sunlight, and emits heat back to the atmosphere. Yu says that helps cool the building underneath and it does so far more effectively than white paint, which only reflects certain wavelengths of solar radiation.

Wouldn't this cause a couple of problems though? Like if lots of houses did their roof with this stuff, wouldn't the reflection be a problem to planes/birds? Also wouldn't the heat radiated back cause more of a global warming problem? (I am not very good on thermodynamics)

Since anyone can be a “photographer” these days, does having instant access to a camera in one’s pocket have a net positive for society? Freelance commercial photographer and public speaker Bob Mackowski believes it does, as it helps tangibly preserve memories.

“It can help you document anything in your life that needs to be documented, whether it's your child's first steps or that raging party that you don't remember from last night,” he said.

My dentist has a huge aerial photo of our local town and the surrounding countryside. She distracts children with it, asking them to find the street where they live (and if they are too young for that, she has a few little teddy bear stickers she's hidden on it for them to find). I've been going 20 years, and I still get the urge to find my house every single time!

I only saw such effect on my old cat. She used to take walks in the garden, and our miserable excuse of a human neighbor beat her with a steel pipe, breaking her hind leg. It was in a cast for weeks, and when that came off, her little leg looked like a chopstick. (Still outlived her vile attacker by a decade though.)

How nice of them to return it! I've have USPS send packages to within a mile of my home (nearest post office here on the West Coast), then reroute to the East Coast, then back here again. When I eventually receive it, all of the address information is perfectly correct! It's gotta make you wonder who fell asleep at my local post office!

The insulation method of its day. I grew up in a 100+ year old stone-walled house, and as a small child I was always confused why other people didn't just... keep things on their windowsills. I was disappointed to eventually discover that most modern construction does not come with foot-deep windows.

The kitchen wall is about 75cm and the wall between the living room and bedroom is just over a metre. I'll leave you to convert it into old fashioned measurements. Between my bed and the router is about four metres, but since one of them is a stone wall with rubble infill, my signal is "barely present". It's yet another day of thirtyfuckwhat outside, but inside it's pleasantly cool inside. A regular desk fan keeps the air moving but it's not the stifling that is making everything turn brown outside.

Don't laugh, but I bet he could fix most of that by finding out his blood type and then read the book "Eat Right 4 Your Type" and start eating the right foods. Worked for me. It really DOES matter what foods are best for what blood type you are. I'm an A and not only do I stay away from all red meats but there are certain veg, fruits, fish, etc that are good and bad. Sticking to the good ones I have NO ALERGIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

These are contraction furrows-much more easily seen in brown eyes. Its due to wrinkles in the iris, as you grow and your eyeballs get bigger, the pigmented tissue gets a bit stretched, its a bit like an eyeball stretch mark (my stepson has them, he ended up being a volunteer patient in ophthalmology exams at the local medical school for candidates to examine)

I had one like that once, it grew out of my cheek. I pulled it out and it never came back. Bodies do weird stuff sometimes. I once had an ingrown hair on my shin, after I picked the little coil of hair out I went to pluck it out and when I pulled on it a dimple appeared around half an inch away. The dumb hair grew under my skin and surfaced half an inch away from it's root. Weird!

So my dad once went to a Halloween party wearing a hot pink nylon wig (can't remember what he was dressed up as, this was years ago) and must've swallowed a hair at some point because a few months later he had a long, neon pink hair growing out of the sole of his foot. He couldn't pull it out because he didn't want to break it off and the wig had looong hair so he simply had to live with this pink hair coming out of his foot for ages. My siblings and I had a lot of fun showing ur friends our dad's crazy pink foot hair hehe

Should've posted my response here because this is NOT like greenwashing. This is how all business, except hospitality, operate. You charge the customer for all your costs/overhead, which includes salaries, supplies/equipment, insurance, and profit (owner's income). This is much fairer than servers busting their butts, not getting adequate tips, and ekeing out a poverty-level living.

… that’s kind of obnoxious when you could just, y’know, pay your staff better. We have hospitality workers earning around $100 AU per hour on public holidays (and most businesses will charge a PH surcharge but with wages like that, fair enough) because we actually pay our workers properly instead of expecting them to live on the decency (or otherwise) of other people. I don’t normally hop on the tip bandwagon; I get it’s cultural. But a ‘living wage’ fee? That’s just lazy.

    XenoMurph

4 months ago (edited) Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

But.... that's what happens anyway. Where do you think the money to pay staff comes from? Ultimately from the customers. This is a weird way of doing it though. But identifying that they are more expensive because the money goes to all the staff is not bad. The fact that the tip is optional is a good thing.

I'm clueless so I went to the Reddit source for this image and found this: This actually gets complicated (and fascinating). You’re right that magnetism is not the answer to this particular mystery, but oxygenated blood and deoxygenated blood (as in the veins pictured here) have different magnetic properties, which actually led us to our understanding of how they carry oxygen back in the 1930s (Pauling et al.). Deoxygenated blood largely does not have anything bound to the heme iron (CO2 does not swap places with the O2), and so it is more responsive to a magnetic field!

A friend of mine had to swallow two of these, she had a super slow bowel and intestinal delay, basically pooped once a week. Those little rings can be picked up on X-ray, that way the doctors can see how long they take to pass and if there is a significant area of obstruction.

This is what happens if your balance on your feet is not right. If you walk on the outer edge of your foot, your little toe will likely end up like this to some extent. People with extremely high arches tend to walk with their weight to the outer side of the foot. I have the same.

I don't think it's ill-fitting shoes (though I have had to get rid of shoes recently because they don't fit right, but I only wore them a couple of times) but could be to do with my feet growing wider.

    Jaya
    Community Member
4 months ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

It could be something like charcoal, but interesting fact: some things can spontaneously catch on fire. For instance hay in a hay stack, or cloth that is drenched in oil or paint. It has to do with fermentation processes that generate heat, and if it's in a closed down container it can't get rid of the heat and will catch fire. That's why massage parlors aren't allowed to keep the dirty towels with oil on them inside the building, but have to put them in a garbage container that's put far enough away from buildings. It's also a problem for farmers (hay stacks) and painters (cloth drenched in paint that contains certain oils). It's recommend to let oily/paintcovered cloth dry out in the open, folded out instead of crumped into a ball.

Belt drive has been standard on some Harley Davidson motorbikes for many years. If its strong enough to for them... In fact the main reason it's not used on most pedal cycles is simply that there's no real benefit in strength, efficiency or weight to be gained, just a slightly reduced maintencance requirement,

As a swedish person I've always found it so strange that these fish are so popular abroad, like yeah we have a fish shaped sweet but they're really not at all hyped up here, and I very rarely see someone put them in their pick-and-mix bag... But I love that we're represented somehow abroad besides IKEA and meatballs lol

Here's what one commenter on the Reddit thread said: I know my comment will get buried, but the likely cause is the cell tower that they use for the transactions is likely overwhelmed with the patrons at the air show. They are unable to connect. If they had a way of reconfiguring their POS (point of sale) card readers to use a local wifi network attached to the internet, they could continue processing cards. Source: I've been at air shows where the local cell towers can't handle 10,000 new cell devices in the same location. Event Vendors' card transaction processing fails and cashless venues suddenly become frozen.

Correct. I did see and hear it happen once by a Blue Angel plane, not sure if it was an accident or not. Many years ago at a Seafair performance in Seattle. I grew up near an air force base. Fighter jets would routinely break the sound barrier on training flights over our town. The whole house shook. I believe they aren't allowed to do that anymore.

4 months ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

You should always go to the swimming pool by showering naked and putting on a swimsuit on clean skin for hygiene reasons. Cultures where nudity is taboo cannot follow hygiene rules and swimsuits are worn under clothes and you go into the pool without showering or just wet your swimsuit in the shower. I go swimming regularly and swimming teachers always emphasize hygiene rules when swimming learners from other cultures try to act against the rules. (Swimming lessons are mandatory in schools). In this Finnish swimming hall in question, burkinis are allowed but they offer showers with shower curtains and you still have to soap your skin and wash your private parts like the rest of us. You have to wet your hair and keep it tied up or alternatively you have to wear a swimming cap. If some group does not follow the rules and for this reason new rules have to be created, I do not think it is discrimination.

This is horrible. For Muslim women. But also for trans men who don't want other people to see their scars from top surgery (because they feel uncomfortable about them, or because they live somewhere where it's unsafe to be out of the closet). And trans men who haven't had top surgery and nonbinary people who were born with a female body but feel horribly uncomfortable having to dress feminine. They should be allowed to wear a swimming shirt (the kind that is made of the same fabric as a bikini, that is made specifically for swimming). And also just men who don't wanna have a naked belly/chest. There's no reason that swimming shirts are unhygienic.
