Tragicomedy, as a genre, has existed for more than 23 centuries. It paradoxically blends the sad and the funny, proving that things are rarely just black and white. Seriousness as well as absurdity coexist in real life too, and the “Funny and Sad” online community is just one proof of that.

With more than 1 million members, it shares life's moments that are equally as tragic as they are comedic. After all, life can’t always be sunshine and rainbows, and when hardship hits, it can be better to deal with it in a humorous way.

While you’re scrolling through, don’t forget to check out a conversation with Jennifer Toof, LPC, NCC, an expert in trauma and owner of Trauma Informed Counseling & Consulting, who kindly agreed to tell us more about coping with humor.

I upvoted this because it needs attention. Personally, I down vote this practice of average people paying for some rich dudes stadiums that allow them to fleece the public of even more money! Subsidizing big oil, big pharma, big tech, and sports is immoral.

Well duh, obviously a sports stadium is more important than children and family services.

So far Chicago has resisted giving the White Sox money for their new stadium...so far. But our mayor is a wimp. Hopefully our governor will stop it. Again the team owner is worth billions.

At least in my experience, too many people in the US blame diabetics for having diabetes. They'll say the person must have diabetes because they're fat and eat only junk food, and therefore deserve every bad thing that happens to them. Similar to lung cancer - anyone who gets it must be a smoker and deserves it so why fund lung cancer research? The minute you talk about Diabetes I (a genetic disease that has nothing to do with diet) or why those with Diabetes II should have affordable healthcare, they either clam up, or double down on how those people's could stop having diabetes if they tried harder. It's getting better, but I still hear that argument from a lot of people.

I get that with pancreatitis (especially when it's chronic, like mine). "Well, if didn't put so much importance to being a drunk". I've never had 1 alcoholic drink in my life. Only a small percentage get it because of alcohol use.

Your comment is of course ridiculous. You'll never make any progress with that attitude. Demonizing the opposition only impresses the true believers; you'll never convince anyone that way. Personally I think people on both sides are sincere. That's what makes it such a contentious issue. Embittered people like you need to be reminded that the Supreme Court did not outlaw abortion - it returned the issue to the states. Want to make a difference? Work at the state level.

“Humor serves as a defense mechanism, meaning it can be an unconscious psychological response to protect people from feelings of anxiety, threats to self-esteem, and things that they don't want to think about or deal with,” trauma expert Jennifer Toof told Bored Panda.

“So in tragic or sad moments, some people turn to humor to cope, and, since it's unconscious, they may not even realize they are using humor in that way,” she said.

Poverty isn't an accident. Its not a problem. Its not a disease. Poverty is a system to keep the rich thriving and with a constant supply of cheap labour. Poverty is not an incurable thing, or even extremely complicated, it is solely the result of corporate greed and the need for labour demand.

Dealing with hard times with humor has physical and emotional benefits, according to research. “Laughter releases endorphins, dopamine, oxytocin, and serotonin, all of which are associated with improved mood,” explains Toof.

“It also decreases the release of cortisol, the stress hormone, meaning it can make people feel less stressed and more relaxed. Even the act of smiling has been found to release chemicals associated with happiness and stress relief.

Humor can also distract us from things that are overwhelmingly difficult, and it helps us reframe situations, making a potentially scary, sad, or traumatic situation appear less threatening.”

Kinda the same topic, but could you imagine how much better public housing, minimum wage, snap/welfare benefits would be if our elected officials were forced to survive on their areas poverty rate? It would also help deter horrible people for running for office. It may lower the crime rate within our government. Perhaps it would have helped avoid 34 felonies (and counting).

“Negative thinking patterns can include only paying attention to failures and ignoring successes, black or white thinking (e.g., ‘If I get anything less than an A+ on this test, I’m a failure’), labeling oneself based on mistakes (e.g., ‘I’m a loser, an idiot’), [and] mind-reading (e.g., ‘Everyone will think I’m a loser for not getting this promotion’),” said Emma Morton, an expert of psychology, in a previous interview with Bored Panda.

Not all drag performances have sexually suggestive stuff or innuendos, some drag artists never do anything sexual at all. Lots of regular drag shows are not meant for kid's eyes, but there are plenty of drag performances that are totally fine. And drag readings for kids are completely child appropriate, they're just a man in a princess dress reading out a children's book, or a woman in a knight's costume playing out the scene from a book. They only show kids that boys can dress up as princesses too and girls can dress up as knights too, there is no harm there. Saying a kid can't see a drag reading that is meant for kids, is like saying children can't watch a children's movie if the main actor has also played in horror movies. They are 2 completely different performances by the same person.

My wife and I have taken our girls to drag shows. They were not sexual at all. And my daughters were well adjusted, well mannered, intelligent, caring individuals when they went in and they were the same girls when we left.

Not for nothing, but I trust a drag queen to "Oh HELL NO!" and take down almost any threat more than I trust a would-be pedophile priest or pastor. I would feel safe leaving my nieces at a drag show, but I would need to supervise to make sure they're safe in a church. The only thing the drag queen is gonna teach kids is to love yourself and be fabulous. A religious figure is gonna tell them why you should be ashamed of everything and how to target people who aren't like you.

I would feel more comfortable at a drag show with my kids. I have yet to have drag queens accost me and tell me how terrible my style is and try to force a makeover and drag persona on me under threat of eternal punishment. Yet I have church people come to my house to tell me I need to get to know their indoctrinated interpretation of life. So yeah as for toxic indoctrination imma stay away from the churchs.

Homophobia only got in the book in later translations (I think 1946 or 1962 or so). The biggest commandment is love thy neighbour as thyself, so sad to see a lot of christians forget that. Hope you've found people who accept you as you are! (If sexuality really was a choice, wouldn't there be more lesbians? :P )

Biblically, you can love people without forcing others to pay the expenses of those who refuse to work, and you can care for others and disagree with their politics. It's not that Christianity is a sham, it's that it's easier to mock than genuinely understand.

Some "Christians" don't actually follow the actual teachings of Jesus Christ. I am a follower of Christ and I live buy Ĥis teachings. Jesus gave us two (2) laws to live by. Matthew 22:36-40: 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[a] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b] 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Alot of "Christians" cherry pick or interpret a passage to fit THEIR agenda. Not sure what to do? Read the 1st 4 books of the Bible. Read what Jesus ACTUALLY taught!!!

Insuline is one of the cheapest medecine on earth. I mean we know how to produce it very easily and for not much money. Work in hospital in France and i feel bad when i think at how much insulin we just waste. At some point americans should just ask to european to send them insuline by postal service. I mean in France not only insuline is really cheap but it's also refunded by social security for every person suffering from diabete. Diabete is on a list of 30 chronic disease and social security pay everything related to these disease.

And in the rest of the world...my mum has had several hospital stays, all extensive, she is 81 years young. Each time her insulin regime has been reviewed and amended, sometimes to different brands etc. Welp, she leaves with a bag full, about 6 months supply and new instructions for me each time, NO COST. We also have enough testing machines to open a shop, handed out each time, one visit she got 2. She isnt even there because of her diabetes, they just do the review cos its convenient to giver her an overall health check while they have her. Australia.

Insurance sucks, you pay for the insurance, then you have to reach an out of pocket deductible which mine is 1500, before insurance kicks in and pays 100%never reached it so everything I pay is out of pocket, then there’s the co-pay which it’s different for each kind of dr you see. It’s pathetic and our government should be a shamed that they let this greed go on

The reason why it is so expensive in the US is due to US regulations that force high prices, and when states set caps, the expenses get put onto other meds. Professor Robin Feldman in her book "D**g Wars" explains how a simple 1 paragraph change in US regulations would crash the price to about 10-15 for insulin. A lot of regulations are not there to protect people, but to protect the industry

Insulin is so extremely cheap. When it was first created, by the University of Toronto, the patent was sold for 1 f****n dollar. The profit margin for insulin today is just over 17,000%. A 17,000 percent profit is absolutely INSANE for any product, let alone a LIFE-SAVING medical necessity.

One of the major reasons the Republicans fought the Trans Pacific free trade agreement (America ultimatelty didn't join up) was they didn't want Australians getting cheaper medicines as our government heavily subsidises medication for us in Australia.

Insulin is free in the whole of the UK as it's a life-saving medication. Strangely, inhalers, which are also life-saving, are not considered to be so by the government in England. Edited to add: We have to pay a prescription charge for each inhaler or asthma medication we take. If I didn't have a prepayment certificate I would be forking out over £60 per month on prescription costs.

Despite all the benefits of coping with humor, like any defense mechanism, it can become an issue when it’s overused to avoid dealing with problems, says Toof. “In the short term, after a difficult situation, humor can help someone put distance between themselves and an overwhelming experience, but the underlying trauma will remain there if it's not addressed and resolved.”

When i go to bed i say to myself i'm gonna read at least 50 pages of this book or i will watch this entire movie, i don't care i'm not gonna sleep early. And how surprise i fall asleep. Same for the morning, if i'm motivated to sleep more and add minutes to my alarm i usually feel pretty woke up. Reverse psychology on myself helps me and that's so weird.

My body clock is naturally about 26 hours long, and trying to shove it into a 24 hour box all my life has basically resulted in me being a night owl constantly struggling to go to bed and get up at a reasonable time. However, after photographing the Northern lights many days, and waking up later and later in the day and evening, often 8 or 9pm, one day ended up one day waking up so late it was early! (4am).

The reason why medical care in Europe is easy accessible for almost everybody is the "we care"-idea. The money comes from the mandatory health insurance* (supported by government for those who truly cannot afford it) and taxes. Because of this, the rule of "no job without health insurance" works. Even if workless you do have a health insurance. *Contribution varies per country, it is either a fixed amount per month or % of monthly salary and includes the children.

Plenty of people "who aren't rich" are investing. It takes very little money to start investing. While I might argue it doesn't affect the poor, it has great effect on the middle class who should have some savings there and often their retirement funds.

Grew up dirt floor poor. Worked my rear end off from age 9 until 58 and have a pretty nice retirement. And no, you don't have the "right" not to have to work hard, just depends how bad you want a decent life. Yes I know, not a popular opinion, but there it is.

The stock market likes it when a company sacks a lot of people, not realizing that a lot of customers just got too poor (and angry) to buy their products. Workers are customers too, ya know.

I've never lost a job due to stock market fluctuations. I've never lost a job because I'm willing to work and I actually do work and not just state my willingness while trying to get money from a dole or from people walking by. So, "love" the excuses you're making, buddy; there are jobs out there to tide anybody over who is willing and able.

Who said anything about not working? It's not the same thing as being fired because a company cut their workforce. This one clearly went over your head.

Interestingly, many comedians use humor to cope and hide their struggles behind comedy. Like Robin Williams, who prematurely passed away at 63, or like Ellen DeGeneres, Sarah Silverman, Richard Pryor, and Woody Allen, who spoke or joked about depression and lack of self-worth that followed them in the past or even present.

Very few countries have the collective maturity to look at their history without rose tinted glasses. Maybe Germany is the furthest along, with their full recognition of their role in WWII, but the USA, Britain, Japan, France and dozens of others all can't seem to quite make peace with reality. Its much healthier to love your country whilst acknowledging and accepting its many flaws. Sadly huge numbers of people would rather live in a fantasy world where their country is perfect and won't tolerate any criticism. They call it patriotism, but that's not loving your country, its childish infatuation.

Okay here's my view, take it or leave it. I don't care what y'all say about it. I think that Marijuana should be used medically, like for instance fixing seizures or other medical problems. My problem is with recreational marijuana use, both of my biological parents used marijuana when I was a child and needless to say they weren't present at all. They also used heroin but the Marijuana contributed a bunch. So in short, medicinal use is good and should be promoted, but recreational use is destructive

Sigh- Marijuana has changed so much since I was a kid. It is way, way stronger and people use so much more than we used to. People sing it's praises, but if you rightfully treat it as a medication you must also admit that most medications have side effects for some people. Because usage has increased so much it is becoming painfully obvious that this should be researched and publicized way, way more than is currently being done. While severe side effects are not very common I have seen true damage done to my son and to a friend by this allegedly harmless d**g. And please don't tell me it is not addictive when people deny it is the pot when they are confronted with the facts; refusing to see that there COULD be a problem with a substance is the first and foremost indicator of addiction. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8686926/ and also https://www.cedars-sinai.org/health-library/diseases-and-conditions/c/cannabinoid-hyperemesis-syndrome.html

One of the earliest psychological studies of comedians, carried out in 1975 by Samuel Janus, found that 80% of them reached out to mental health professionals at some point in their lives. He included a comment in the article saying, “They repeatedly expressed the fear that if they were successful in analysis, to the point where their suffering was greatly relieved, they would then cease to be funny.”

My best friend had to quit her job to qualify for healthcare. It's such a screwed up system. You basically have to be homeless to qualify for any assistance in certain states. Ironically, those states happen to be the ones outlawing all forms of abortion. So a nonexistent safety net will become even more overburdened. In the end, it means desperate parents will work for desperate wages. They have people believing the problem with this country has to do with the color of a person's skin. In reality, the only color destroying our nation is green.

I've been on Medicaid for low income, and it was surprisingly good. I lived in a relatively rural area (central Pennsylvania) and almost all the doctors in the area would take Medicaid, and the Medicaid would cover just about anything, and the most I ever paid for a prescription was like $3. It was fantastic. Then I moved to the Philadelphia suburbs and it was SO HARD finding doctors that would take Medicaid. The ones that would, the practice was clearly geared toward low-income patients specifically. Doctors in more expensive areas can expect to make more money, so the amount that Medicaid will pay them isn't high enough. In places with lower cost of living (and fewer people on Medicaid because of lower population!), the Medicaid payments are fine. Food for thought...

My brother is on medicaid in west virginia. He stopped using it because the hospital would charge as much as they could, but he still had a copay. So he got other insurance, and even the percentage of copay is higher, what he pays is less because the overall bill is cheaper. Note: for those outside USA, billing is based on what your insurance negotiated, not actual cost. So one compay may agree to pay $2000 for a treatment but another negotiated to only pay $1000.

If they really didn’t want poor people to reproduce then they should let schools teach sex ed (factual, not biblical), promote the use of birth control/contraceptives, legalize abortion and fund planned parenthood….and support gay marriage since they’re not likely to have kids of their own….oh, they don’t do any of those things? It’s almost like they’re part of the problem, isn’t it?

If you are in the US and on SSI social security disability payments (which means that you are entirely disabled, cannot work, and have never worked a job, probably because of your disability), you legally cannot own more than TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS or they will stop sending you payments to live on. If they find out that someone helps pay for your rent, mortgage, food, or utilities, the government reduces the amount of your disability payments. If two people on SSI get married to one another, their SSI payments will be reduced. Going on SSI disability puts people in permanent, grinding poverty, only two steps away from homelessness at all times. We literally punish people for being disabled. [Note: There is also SSD disability, which means that you've worked for at least 10 years and paid into social security for that time. They give you more money on SSD and don't control how much you own. Because all that matters to the government is that you be a good little drone and work work work]

And the wealthy people only have to pay into social security on up to $167,000 of their income. The rest they get to keep while the rest of us that make anything below that pretty much funds the whole system with our 100% paying. Should be the other way around. I had an engineering teacher that was the head of the engineering dept at my school. He had written the book for his class. Went to the school book store and the brand new book cost $160 but I found a used one for $60 and promptly purchased it. The first day of class he begins a lecture out of chapter 2 and I am very confused, my book covers a different topic than the lecture. Well, c**p, this book won't work, I have to buy the new one. I go to return the used one and it turns out there are no returns on used books. So I buy the new book and have now invested $220 in books for this class. However, now I have both books, when I get time to I open them both and my jaw dropped. The only difference was the chapter order, the text was identical. This total a*****e had taken his previous book, rearranged the chapters and slapped "2nd Edition" on the cover so he could sell more of his books at the "new" price.

When someone says something like "We shouldn't help refugees when we have homeless people!" I like to say "Good point, what do you do to help the homeless?" and I watch them not reply because it's not about helping one group over another, it's about not wanting to care about people.

Billionaires already pay the highest taxes. They don't make money and create jobs by whining and complaining and not putting in the work. Punishing others for succeeding and creating jobs and then taking away their money and incentives is evil. Nobody is entitled to anyone's labor/ time/money

If you have a pile of money so high you can't see the top of it, the only reason to throw more on the pile is to keep someone else from having it. Instead of suing those farmers, why not give them a load of seed potatoes that they CAN use?? Think of the good press they missed out on.

The worst part is that it isn’t even about the settlement money, it’s about forcing the farmers into bankruptcy so that they can swoop in and buy up the farms for cheap and take over…probably bought with the same money they received in the settlement. It would be too easy (and generous) to simply contract with the farmers so they can buy their potatoes….no, that isn’t petty enough for them.

Actually they're rich because we're poor. Like an earlier post pointed out: Being poor means we can't afford basic necessities or basic care of ourselves or belongings (like car maintenance), which sets us up for a sh!t ton of expensive problems down the line. Our poverty makes them rich. Their wealth doesn't make me poor. Their conniving thieving greedy shortsighted selfishness that places basic necessities out of reach makes me poor.

You can also find videos where rich people explain how poor people will remain poor even with support, because "they would use that money for food" whereas they [the rich ones] would double that money in no time. Sure, b***h, how about you try doubling that money outside of your insulated rich bubble, with no connections, no yachts, no funds, no trusts, no million dollar accounts to your name.

Sad people believe such nonsense. 1) you are not poor. go see how poor people live in really poor countries and see you are fukin wealthy. 2) you only feel "poor" compared to rich people, that's why you hate them/ it's like a homeless person see you drive your car and buy food and throw some of it and hate you for "taking his money" 3). take the richest man in the US wealth, divide it between every American, you get 250$ each...

During the last winter of COVID, teachers here were threatened that if they don't get vaccinated by March, they would be fired. I refused vaccination bc no one tells me what to do with my body and I wanted to die of COVID. I know y'all think it's crazy, but victims of abuse desperately need control over their lives. Being forced to vaccinate or to wear a mask for the benefit of the society that ruined my life doesn't sound fair.

This implies Russia is more civilized than the US, if I'm understanding this right, by the date in the Tweet. Unless there was another war going on. But if it is implying that Russia is more civilized than the US...don't tell the Boomers. They will flip out. However, last I heard Russia still thinks homosexuality is a mental illness and same sex marriage is illegal. I'm not even sure you can be gay in public in Russia. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

When my mom and stepdad died and my sister was executor of their “estate” (trailer home), a credit card company actually threatened to ruin their credit rating. Another (bank?) wanted her to have them sign power of attorney documents. It was as if no one had ever died before and they just didn’t know how to handle it.

Actually, tightly controlled hunting of deer is very necessary, especially here in the upper Midwest. DNRs strictly control how and when deer hunting occurs, but without deer hunting, the deer population would exponentially explode. Why? Because natural predators were almost eliminated to extinction. So hunting is a good thing, but only because humans messed it up in the first place.

Under international Law the ICC only has jurisdiction over signatory members, the US is not a member. In fact the UN Charter states that any independent international orgs cannot exercising jurisdiction over non-members, or else the UN under international law will consider that group a rouge organization, and legiminate targets under international law. The US sanctioned them to get them to back off, or else the CIA would have been lawfully allowed to knock them off under the UN Charter. The ICC today is now doing the same illegal actions with other countries.

We did find some WMD's, not massive stockpiles, but Ukrainian Troops, operating under the Polish controlled "South Central Zone" (only Iraq area not under US or British control, the Poles were given a sector with a dozen nations troops under them). They found enough Sarin gas to take out a major city. Polish troops also captured nerve gas being sold on the black market in their zone. Not huge stockpiles, the Poles and Ukrainians did find. BTW the combat experience in Iraq helped Ukraine develop the strategy that has allowed them to fight Russia and the combat experience.

Isn't it brilliant that adults get to go back and study. I know in certain countries its not free, like it is in mine. I just always hope that everyone gets a chance if they want it. I was a teacher of mature students and i taught in womens prisons and its just wonderful watching people get interested in books, reading, writing. My oldest student was 72 she had married at 14 had 15 children countless grand kids and great grandkids. She never went to school. She learned to read and write , she did her exams equivalent to secondary school and she tutors now. Education is a wonderful thing.

Didn't see any explanations of why the refusal.....yet " No Kid Hungry " charity organization needs donations to feed kids ,especially during the summer.....and yet, we claim to be the greatest country in the world.....The greatest country in the world doesn't need a charity to feed kids.......you know what the greatest country in the world does.....it feeds its kids

Letting drag shows exist isn't sexualising children though. Not all drag performances contain sexual suggestiveness or innuendos, some drag performers never do anything sexual in their performances at all. Drag shows that aren't appropriate for children, won't allow people to bring children. And drag performances that don't continu anything sexual, aren't problematic for kids at all, there's no reason children couldn't see those.

No kidding! Last year the EPA put an advisory against eating all freshwater fish in the US. PFAS are so high in them that eating one fish is the equivalent of drinking contaminated water for over 4 years. I live in an area where people routinely catch and eat their own fish, and often eat local fish every week. The EPAs warning hit all the major news stations and then was ignored in favor of more Trump-Biden rhetoric. This stuff causes cancer and is only going to get worse.

Exactly. Every generation had horrible things to deal with. Which doesn't mean that we shouldn't do everything we can to fix it and to prevent similar stuff happening to newer generations of course. We should absolutely do that. But we shouldn't get caught up in this 'our generation is the only generation that suffers' mind set.

Meanwhile in Japan, "bukkake ramen" is something you can eat in a normal restaurant - in Japanese the word "bukkake" itself is about as "obscene" as the "cream" in "cream pie".
