The reason for this, believe it or not, is money. To advertise in the NYT cost you per letter and so ppl saved money by omitting certain letters from words. As you can see, it stuck.
I think it's simply that Samual Webster, when writing the dictionary, decided to simplify spellings.
Load More Replies...And Canadians confused on which ones to use . (I use a mix of British and American spelling)
My Grade 12 English teacher said both versions are acceptable. I grew up with both Canadian and a lot of US written content. I thought I was seeing a mandela effect for a long time.
Load More Replies...Actually we as Americans can go with the our spelling, but it's not pushed. Meaning, both are correct spellings and you can go to whichever one you prefer. That's what I was taught back in the 80s.
I have heard that in former times, if you inserated in a US newspaper, you had to pay per letter. And for that reason, people started to drop "unnecessary" letters and it stuck to the language.
I once saw a meme about American English being "simplified english" and tbh, it kind of makes sense. Not in a mean way, but American English is simplified in the fact it gets rid of pointless letters, spells things in ways it sounds, etc. xP
Actually, apparently it had to do with it being it cheaper to send telegraphs without the extra letter. I read that a while ago anyway.
Noah Webster's dictionary decisions occurred before there were telegrams
Load More Replies...I do. The stronger, the better. I like my tea OPAQUE. 😆
Load More Replies...What in the world are you talking about? I’ve never heard anyone do that.
Load More Replies...I love that this one has THE most comments and arguments, lol! Black tea for me, the stronger the better, but get that teabag outta my cup after no more than 2-3 minutes of steeping time, thank you very much. The use of microwaves in any way means immediate expulsion from whatever country you currently reside in. That's just nasty. Carry on, pip pip!
The South definitely does not leave tea bags in iced tea. If we did, someone would throw it at us.
Ted Lasso ❤️ (When asked how he takes his tea) "Well, usually I take it right back to the counter, because someone's made a horrible mistake."
I do, only because i reuse and I have tea at night, so I'm usually lazy then
Oh, dear Gord in Heaven. I've been food bank poor and cannot imagine reusing my teabag, egads!
Load More Replies...When you buy a cuppa from a hot tea truck in the UK (not sure what they are called, but they look like the mobile fries cars in the Netherlands), the tea is boiled for a long time in the cooker, which makes it really strong and lovely, and then you have to add milk or you won't be able to process it! Especially the Earl Grey is perfect:).
Metric is used in the US by military, in the sciences, in liquor and wine bottling (not beer though, I don't know why), medicine, and probably numerous other applications. Day to day stuff is imperial instead of metric. Here is a short 5 minute documentary on the history of the imperial measurement system in the US- https://youtu.be/JYqfVE-fykk?si=puGhGZct4HZEB4IM
Let’s just ignore that American science and medicine uses the metric system. Anyway, time to round the pub for a pint.
No thanks, I can't, I need to lose two stones so I'm not drinking
Load More Replies...For a long time, people viewed the USA as the land of opportunity. The American Dream was what many people who chose to immigrate to the US were after. The notion was that if you worked hard enough, you could make a good life for yourself. And what did that 'good life' entail exactly? A stable job, a family, and a nice house, most often.
If you didn't grow up in America, like me, you would think that the grass was always greener there. Better education, more jobs, and no corruption in the government. You somehow imagine that once you're there, you'll be instantly happier and more successful. And when you finally get there – yes, the roads are wider and stores bigger, yet it's not exactly the paradise TV and other media made it out to be.
Of course it's that cheap in the Shire, no one uses a car .
Load More Replies...Based on today's prices (GBP 1.42 litre) and conversion rates (GBP = 1.27 USD), that comes out as $6.82 for one of your small US gallons.
"1.24 pound" - Conveniently forgetting it's only a short while back that the UK abandoned ha'pennies, shillings, crowns, and guineas....
dw, no one calls it "pound sterling", you'll probably hear "quid" instead, or just "1.24" (well, not that number since we can only wish it was that cheap)
Yet everyone gives driving costs in miles per gallon not litres per 100km. Buy it in litres, use it in gallons.
Here in Boston, it's not unusual to bump into someone on their break dressed in 18th century garb, especially in the historical sections where tours are constant.
Omg yeah I went on one of those tours and it was SO FUN!!!! I got an Alexander Hamilton notebook afterwards.
Load More Replies...It do be like that sometimes. Mcdonalds, y'all need a better ice cream machine
Of all the ways to avoid using the metric system, I'm very happy with this one. Why use cms when we can be distracted by a cute, happy dog?!
Would have been better in bananas, although admittedly, not as cute.
get rid of the America system AND the metric system. WE SHALL USE DOGGIES!!!!!
If I fits, I sits. Srsly though look at that little face! I just want to smoosh his lil face!
THE WHOLE WORLD IS NOW REQUIRED TO USE THE DOGGY SYSTEM
However, Americans still think that the US is one of the greatest countries in the world. 2023 Pew research shows that Americans' opinion of their country declined only modestly since 2019. Only 27% of Americans believe that "there are other countries that are better than the U.S."
And it's not only Americans who like the USA – people from around the world have positive opinions, too. The top things that other nations like and admire about the US are their technological advancements, entertainment, and military. And what do people abroad not like about the US? I think you can guess: the last place goes to the healthcare system, and the standard of living takes the second to last place.
A dressing used as a condiment excessively here in the States. Have ranch flavored everything. I have seen people put it on steaks, pasta, etc. Usually had with wings, or fried food though.

Load More Replies...I guess this one is quite on the spot for some of them, but the others are in fact interested on us. But try to be international when you only have 2 weeks of vacation and plane rides are expensive and long.
A UK guy on Tik Tok who lives in America now describes it well. He says due to limited time off USA gets plus how hugely vast America is we tend to vacation within USA. Could take a day to drive across Texas. He says ec State is like its own country bc of how different each state is from another. Therefore with so much to see explore places to go it ends up being a wise choice when planning a vacation.
Load More Replies...It's odd - so many people around the world pity / hate / fear the US - but would move here in a hot minute if they could.
People tend to forget just how big the US is really and we have so much drama within our borders. It's easy for a US citizen to simply drown in information about the US alone. I know a boy from Kentucky who isn't sure if India is real or computer generated like a Marvel movie. It's sad people suffer from information overload.
I have to say, the USA is pretty good at minding their own business. Except when it comes to Mexico.
Like starting wars and 'helping' with weapons and soldiers — fuςκιηg warlords.

Load More Replies...I'm not excusing how they were treated, but much of the ancestral land of the native Americans had previously been the ancestral lands of some other group of native Americans. Also, this didn't only happen in north America, or the western hemisphere for that matter. Those are just more recent.
The US "won" Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines from Spain. Yet these US citizens are treated like dirt far too often by the racists who consider themselves "real" Americans by virtue of the pasty skin.
Dude literally! As a native, I get so annoyed seeing all the losses happen to us from the 1900s. Thank goodness we live in a more mature society now
Does any Panda know of any treaty between the settlers and the indigenous people that *hasn't* been broken (aka 'redefined / renegotiated') ?
Land treaties, none. Other treaties, like hunting/fishing rights or sovereignty to police their own... a rare few.

Load More Replies...I have encountered several Americans who truly believe Vikings settled North America first then the "Indians" came and attacked the "peaceful" White people. Idiots who refuse to accept the crimes of the past are doomed to repeat them. The human Foot prints in New Mexico prove Native Americans were in North America 20,000 years ago. I don't think White Homosapiens even existed 20,000 years ago. White skin is probably a mutation developed during the last glacial maximum.
Thanks for keeping the “Americans are stupid” stereotype alive and well.
Load More Replies...More and more Americans share on social media how life outside of the US is better, in their opinion. Some creators have videos with titles like "Why I'm Never Moving Back To The U.S." where they list their reasons why living in other countries and continents seems better to them. Common reasons these creators cite are expensive healthcare, high crime rates, and the overall disillusionment with the American Dream.

lol. I remember this meme- but with a guy from 'The Office' (US version).
A recent survey on Preply revealed that almost half of young Americans want to leave the US. 25.6% of the respondents cited social programs such as universal healthcare as the main reason they wish to move out of the US. 18% said that the high cost of living in America is an important factor as well. Where would they rather live? The most popular destinations were the UK, Canada, Japan, and European countries.

The Chinese flags used crimson, an almost orange red such as their flag is. We use a darker red with more blue in it. So I called those flags, Chinese-American flags (with apologies to those Americans with Chinese heritage)

Evan Lorezca, the creator behind The Savvy Expat YouTube channel, names high crime rates in Illinois (the state where he lived with his family) as the number one reason he left America for the Philippines. And while this may not make a lot of sense given that there is quite an abundance of crime in the Philippines, safety is generally a common reason why people choose to expatriate from the US.

Don't see how that's possible; we created Cuba when we helped overthrow their goverment to put Hugo Chavez in power. American meddling in Cuba is exactly what created Cuba the way it exists today. Same with Iran. And a few other countries. Learn history.

And it makes sense: in 2019, the number of firearm-related deaths in the US was five times greater than in other countries with high death rates, such as France and Switzerland.
We're now extending the copy to the end of the Roman Republic - you know, Dictators first, then Empire - with inbred paranoid schizo Emperors. So much to look forward to.
I believe trump qualifies as one of the inbred paranoid schizo ones...
Load More Replies...Any democratic country is just copying off of the Roman Republic, who copied off the Greek, who copied off Persians and Mesopotamians, etc. This isn't a US thing. If your country has laws, rulers, any form of government at all, it copied off someone else

Yup, the sciences in general use the metric system
Load More Replies...Funny, but seriously, not using the metric system isn't that big of a problem. Just let them measure in their own way.
Well that's what NASA did (metric) and Lockheed did (imperial) and the end result was the Mars Climate Orbiter burn up
Load More Replies...It’s not that we aren’t capable of it, we know how to use it, it’s just that we are used to imperial so it’s hard to adapt, we don’t instantly know how big a meter is because we grew up using feet as a reference
Not to be that guy, but weren't rocket scientists and engineers from Germany involved in the moon landing after the war?
It's actually funny. Like- Im American, but I am honestly so embarrased by it that when my family goes, we become canadian.
I went to America last year and found out that they only eat sandwiches and hot dogs.
This is the dream! 😁 *Patriotic upwelling of red white and blue tears*
Imagine if hotdogs actually WERE that size. Just think how tough the bread would have to be to hold it up. 🤣
And what about the cost of living? Generally speaking, compared to Europe, the cost of living in the US is higher. That's because Europeans don't have to spend as much on healthcare, the euro currency is weakening, and inflation is not as high. However, there are downsides, too. Average wages are higher in America, and Europeans spend more of their income on taxes.
When billionaire only pay $750 in yearly taxes and I pay over $20,000 then we know who needs to be taxed.
Most of the things bought with American tax dollars benefits the the rich who don't even pay any taxes.
Yeah, nah. The top 1% pay over 45% and the top 10% pays almost 75% of individual income taxes. The top half vurtually of of it. So, yeah spread the "rich don't pay taxes" lie.
Load More Replies...Actually, that is what Britain's Govt says to its own (poorer) population - frequently. Mostly to enable them to reduce the Elite's/Corps tax.

It was over 50 years ago since Canadians converted to the metric system from imperial and some of us learned imperial first. Oddly, we managed to overcome it and even thrive.

In the UK we get taught that the tax wasn't increased, but large amounts of tea flooded the American market and undercut the smugglers who had been importing it. But, you cherish your thoughts, we'll cherish ours...
Yes and no, Americans started smuggling tea because it was less expensive than British tea, which undercut the British market. In response, the British lowered the price of tea and taxed other products, and then started a monopoly on American tea sales, which made Americans start to smuggle tea again. Britain started directly selling to America, which undercut American smugglers, which made the smuggled tea more expensive. Then Britain started taxing tea again, so people protested with the Boston Tea Party
Load More Replies...Compared to non-European countries, like the UK, living in the US can be pretty expensive, too. Although it depends on the state you are in, if we compare two cities with similar populations, the UK is cheaper. For example, rent prices in London are 29.5% lower than in New York. However, the average salary after taxes is bigger in NYC by 42%.

Rent in metropolitan areas is pretty much the same. Groceries tend to be 18% more expensive in Japan, but meals at restaurants are 45% pricier in the US than in Japan.
The biggest difference is in health insurance costs. Yearly insurance for a Japanese person costs around $1,000, and a premium plan for one American worker costs about $7,911.

Load More Replies...Lastly, America's neighbor, Canada, is the second most popular destination to live for Gen Zers, and it is a bit cheaper than the US. Food and real estate prices can be higher in Canada. However, healthcare and education are much more expensive in the US. Americans also have higher wages, while taxation rates are higher in Canada. So, depending on which city people plan to settle in, costs might balance themselves out.
This meme is a bit weird as firstly, Brazil was started by the Portuguese, then in all the land the US took from Mexico, I do believe that *check notes* they speak Spanish. One country doesn’t need to and one country does.
Brazil was not STARTED by the Portuguese; there were already people there. What is now Brazil was colonized by the Portuguese, just as the British colonized what is now the US. If we should learn Spanish because we are closely connected to one Spanish speaking country, well . . . that's even more true for Brazil.
