50 Times People Took Crafty Ideas To The Next Level, As Shared By This Instagram Account
Interview With ExpertCrafting is big business. The global arts & crafts materials market was valued at $20.96 billion in 2022. And is expected to grow to $30.89 billion by 2030. More than three-quarters of American households have at least one crafty family member who spends an average of 7.5 hours weekly on their hobby. It’s a similar situation in Britain, where around 20% of the population indulge in crafting.
But it turns out there’s more benefit to crafting than just beating boredom - or boosting the economy. Brand new research shows that those who engage in arts and crafts hobbies like knitting, crocheting, painting, and other fun things are actually happier, more positive and more satisfied with their lives.
If you're looking for inspiration for your next project, you might just find it on the CraftyFun Instagram page. It has over 342 thousand followers, all getting their daily crafting fix from thousands of posts. Keep scrolling for our personal favorites. And don't miss the chat Bored Panda had with expert crafter Dr. Sarah Hegge. The creative brains behind thecraftblogger.com

“Right now, my coffee is resting on a linen rug mug I made about 4 years ago and I’m wearing hand knit socks I’ve worn holes in and repaired twice,” Sarah Hegge tells us during our interview. Hegge believes in crafting things that last a while. “When you start from the idea that you’re going to have an object in your life for a long time, it changes how you think about the amount of time you spend on a project and the amount of money you’re willing to put into supplies,” she said.
Hegge lives and breathes arts and crafts. She’s a multi-modal crafter, who works mostly in fiber and textile arts. Her blog thecraftblogger.com has tips for amateurs and experienced crafters, who want to elevate their work. And she carves out time to teach textile and fashion classes at her local community college. Hegge studied fashion design as an undergrad because she wanted to learn more advanced skills. “My favorite class was tailoring, where we made a jacket using traditional hand methods like pad stitching,” she said.
It took her a while to find her path, and she explored various creative avenues along the way. “I ended working as a bridal seamstress, in a theater costume shop, and teaching community college classes. For a while, I worked in a couple of museums with historic fashions, eventually getting a PhD in Design from the University of Minnesota with a concentration in dress, history, and culture. For my dissertation, I conducted a study that involved carefully reproducing two dresses so that I could compare the sewing skills involved.”
We had a bike trailer for my youngest brother and he loved going on bike rides, it became a huge part of our lives for a few years.
Oh that is so cool that he thought of that. He should file a patent and start a company to build them for others, they would definitely sell.
Like many others, Hegge gets lost in her art, “What I like most about crafting is how much it brings me back into the physical world and my own body. We spend so much time on our screens these days (me included!) but with crafting, I get the most out of it when I’m paying attention to the sight, sound, and feel of what I’m working on.”
Crafting is in Hegge’s blood.“My mother quilts, crochets, and does cross stitch and my dad is always doing home improvement projects. So, I grew up with the idea that making and repairing things was a normal part of life,” she told us.
It would be great for sliding items down, too. Might want to put a cushion at the bottom, though
Yeah, the usual 'forgot my keys on the night stand, could you..."
Load More Replies...Hegge is a big believer in crafts that last. We asked her for some tips on how to create something that won’t end up in the dustbin in a week (like these DIY fails). “To me, elevated crafting starts with taking the time to plan out and think about a project before I start. Understanding some color theory and other design basics is useful here, but also it’s important to be confident in liking what you like,” she said. “Next, I source the best supplies I can find. These aren’t always the most expensive, but I do focus on using natural materials as much as possible. They’re nicer to work with and age/wear beautifully.”
Hegge says she tries to focus on the process, not the end product. “If I’m knitting, I make sure I’m appreciating the feel of the yarn in my hands, how pretty the colors are, and the nice sounds the needles make when clicking together. That way, when I inevitably have to restart 3 times or drop a row of stitches, I don’t get frustrated. It’s all part of the experience.” And she says she always uses what she makes. Even if they might get ruined. “My mug rugs are stained from tea, my favorite quilt has pulls from my cats kneading it, and all my socks get holes. That’s part of the process and I love it!”
I want one- not for my cat or ferret, mind, for me. My mind’s going to the MASSIVE wheels those mining vehicles have, so you could easily get cosy.
Some of those are more than 13' / 4 m in diameter so it would be more a room than a bed... It does sound a fun idea, though!
Load More Replies...Has anyone checked whether to breath rubber dust plus the paint chemicals is healthy for the cats?
Aaaaand they inhale offgassing from vinyl, microplastics from toys/food containers, polyester microfibers from literally every blanket...not knocking you, because you are right. It's just that we've poisoned their environment as surely as our own.
Load More Replies...Bouche and Audi would love to ignore one of these. Sigh.
Load More Replies...I think this is unique & lovely. How nice you had a relationship with your stepmom you'd like to cherish! You did her proud. No one else has this!!!
Smart. Love it. As others have said, what a great way to commemorate someone.
This would be cool with the ability to set each watch with a capital city's time of the day . For example one watch with Tokyo's time, Auckland's time, Washington's time, what those times would be at the same time the clock is set at.
That backpack is nearly as big as the kid. I do wonder if kids are having back pain and problems in their teens b/c of these ridiculously huge packs.
Hegge’s home is filled with beautiful items she’s made throughout the years. “One of my favorite projects I’ve done is my 100% hand sewn quilt. I hand sewed all the pieces together then hand quilted the layers. Hand sewing is more time consuming than using the machine, but it’s also quieter and more mediative. I spent months on this project, often working on it half an hour at a time before heading into work. It lives on my bed now, and every time I use it I smile a bit because I feel so proud of my work.”
My dad was not such a nice guy. When he passed away my mom had Teddy bears made from his slick jersey shirts. I thanked her sweetly so she'd feel appreciated, then threw the creepy smelly thing away immediately after I got home. I love bears but this was cringeworthy AF. Still shudder when I think how gross it was.
This is so nice! Will totally do this some day! Maybe just ask my bf if he would donate a shirt of his for each of our kids for when they move out in 11+ years. Would be a great gift, I think, for when they feel homesick or miss mom and dad. Ooohh.... perhaps I could donate some of my band shirts, too. A mom-pillow and a dad-pillow for each kid. ❤
The name makes it funnier because a goby fish is a bottomless pit invasive parasite that will eat anything and a LOT of it
The blogger still has the first "Beginner Lace Hat" she designed. “It was one of the first knitting patterns I created and the first I ever sold. I originally wrote it as a teaching pattern for a knitting class I was developing, so I spent a lot of time thinking about how to make it something that would help my students grow their skills while still also being a thing they wanted to wear in the end,” she told us proudly.
There isn't enough embroidery thread in the world to fix Bouche and Audi's purple chair.
Man, this is a LOT of work. The original material is so frayed so they needed to stabilize that beforehand. then, you had to work while having to stretch the cloth a lot so the embroidery holds.... Sheesh. Kudos!
Why can't you? Does your cat keep their claws off your couch so you don't have one to embroider?
Load More Replies...This is awesome, but pretty soon that kid is gonna need a bigger boat.😄
It looks like the boat part and shark part might be separate, so maybe they can be moved further apart to grow with baby?
Load More Replies...Cool, but that kid is gonna keep growing. At some point... ... ...
At some point...He's gonna need a bigger boat! xD
Load More Replies...We asked Hegge what advice she has for crafting amateurs who are just starting their journey. “Honestly, I think it’s so exciting to be a beginner right now! There are so many ways to learn and it’s easier than ever to find tools and supplies for unusual crafts, she said.
“If you’re totally new to crafting and feeling overwhelmed, I always recommend either taking an in-person class or finding a kit. Sourcing supplies as a beginner is hard because bad supplies and tools make it harder to learn. But as a newbie, you have no idea what to look for. An experienced teacher and/or a good kit will set you up for success.”
I love this!! I’m an adult and I want to do this lol. @Morko - yes I’m an adult who wants to have lunch in a cardboard car, it would bring me some simple joy, I know that bothers you but that’s your problem sweetie, not mine 🥰
Even as an expert, Hegge still takes classes. "Recently I’ve been learning new spinning techniques online through The School of SweetGeorgia and shopping around for a support spindle on Etsy. A decade ago, I would have needed to find a mentor or go to a fiber festival for that sort of thing,” she told us.
I hope they entered it at the County fair. They could win in multiple categories.
I've had the chicken wire and glow paint for years now, but became disabled and never got around to it.😥 Maybe this is my sign to attempt it this year with some help! 💚
Do it, do it, do it! It’ll be a fun project for you and whoever you can get to join in, so you’ll get to make good memories at the same time!
Load More Replies...I'd be stuck on " shape chicken wire" and end up frustrated with lots of scratches and a big mess of wire... How do you shape it?
You can squeeze it and stretch it, but I would recommend gloves. If you wanted to do these, I would make a large tube of chicken wire, the diameter of the skirt, and squeeze it a lot to form the waist, a bit less for the bodice. Then snip off the bits you don't want
Load More Replies...you can use chicken wire or aluminum window screening if you need finer details. i've made multiple halloween decorations and haunted house corpses this way. if you need a lightweight body under a sheet (did this for a play) you shape your body and staple it to a piece of thin furniture backing fiberboard and apply the sheet over it. you can also use this technique inside a costume, like a wedding dress or creepy cloak. it works best if you get someone to stand/lie still while you press the wire around them to shape your ghost. it's also light enough to hang up, like in trees for a floating or hanging ghost.
move it to the garden in the spring, plant climbing vegetables or flowers around the bottom and let them decorate the dress.
There’s a plant I could keep alive! Unless the cat or ferret takes an interest in it, I guess.
My first thought. Last year even my cactus committed suicide. I guess, I'm not a plant person.
Load More Replies...My cousin's girlfriend would do this, she makes stuff all the time. This is a houseplant that would actually work for me. I can't keep plants alive, I follow the directions and they always die. Also have to be careful with the cat and dogs to make sure they aren't toxic.
I made a wreath like this. A big circular wire floral arrangement holder and four smaller ones. The larger one is basic green leaves, the smaller ones have seasonal flowers so I can swap them out throughout the year. It's my favorite project I've made.
I saw an exhibit at The Whitworth Gallery in Manchester (UK) many years ago of a set of cups and saucers, crocheted, starched and displayed on bendable rods in a giant vase like flowers.
And on the topic of tools, what are the must-haves for crafters? “Having a system to organize your tools, supplies, and samples is key, no matter what medium you’re working in,” she advised. “For in-progress projects, I always have a bag, basket , or box with all the tools and supplies I need. This makes it easier to pick up and put down your project, because you’re not hunting around for your pattern or a ruler.”
Almost 50 years ago, they had to drag my son out of the "housekeeping corner" in pre-school. Now, one of his avocations is, indeed, cooking. He is also an avid baker. Good for this little boy and his family who has an open mind!
Load More Replies...At first I thought they zipped-up it with the cat inside when is was going poopy, to keep the sand from splashing(?) all over the place! 😅
Load More Replies...I built a sandbox out of cedar for the kids, because cedar is supposed to keep out bugs. The next summer my youngest is playing in the box when I see a small black spider looking pissed, living in the box. Was about to pick up the spider to move her out when I noticed the red hourglass. She was a black widow. Moved the kid instead. Cedar doesn't keep out black widows I guess
We tried this but unfortunately it left a huge dead area on the grass..it's never grown back the same since.

“Speaking of rulers, you can never have too many rulers or measuring tapes around. I have one in every project bag, scattered throughout my house, and even marked on my sewing table,” Hegge told Bored Panda. “I recently even saw a reddit post (I think in r/knitting) where people showing off rulers they’d had tattooed on their forearms!”
My husband built a catio about this size. It also attaches through a window. The cats love it.
What a great idea for the cats to be outside and safe at the same time.
Ooo, I live across the street from a park with a playground. I will be making one of these with my kids next week.
Imaging if someone just added like a huge 50 pound rock to that and painted it guess he's digesting a deer
What simple change can you or your community make to help struggling, disadvantaged people move forward in this world?
As someone who immerses herself in arts and crafts, Hegge always has her eye on the latest trends. “It may be a bit of my own personal bias, but I see an increasing interest in ethical and environmentally friendly crafting,” she replied when asked what we should expect to see over the next few months.
“I get a lot of questions from students at the school where I work about natural dyes and eco printing,” she added. “I’ve also been seeing more people interested in making their own clothing in order to avoid the environmental harms of fast fashion. I’ve also seen more discussions about how to have enough supplies on hand to allow for creativity while avoiding overconsumption and ideas for using thrifted or scrap materials.”
Still likely phosphorescent paint that glows in the dark, black light just used for photography purposes.

If you thought crochet was just for grannies, think again. “I think crochet is still having quite a moment. I love seeing all the cool young women on social media showing off their hand crochet clothes! Crochet as a craft has a fairly low cost of entry and there’s a lot of different directions that you can go with it, so I think it’s going to stick around for a while.”
And on that note, Hegge had to run. Her coffee was cold on her stained rug mug. Her hands were itching to create yet another beautiful craft to add to her collection. Something that will last for decades to come, and bring joy to her each time she uses it.
For the cartoon lovers, first episode of Courage the cowardly dog. Chicken from Outer Space. Hopefully they are not laying polka dotted eggs.
I feel like my cat could get her paw in there. She's indoor, but...
Now cats have to form an alliance with dogs, who love fetching the balls. Good work, conservationists. Shouldn't you write symphonies instead playing God?
I should do this, now that the puppy has stopped chewing the bedding!
I'm jealous of people who know how to do this stuff. You're very talented folks.
Load More Replies...Aww, my mum used to do this too, not so cool on a T-shirt when you’re 15, but boy do I miss it now 😔💕
My mother did it on one of her own favourite t shirts, to cover bleach splatters. Now she has a one off shirt with a morning glory climbing over it

Awe I love this so much. I wish I still had my dad's truck I would absolutely make this.
I remember that somebody pitched these mittens on "Dragon's Den" years ago as they saw this as a business opportunity. Unfortunately, they walked away without a deal.
Be careful of teaching kids how to undo all types of locks, bc one day they may escape and you have no idea!! This happened with a client of mine from years ago, her school had made her one of these boards, but she also had problems with elopement, and every time they installed a new lock at home she figured it out immediately, because they were teaching her how to at school!! 😅🤦🏻♀️😂 They finally just started putting locks on the top of the doorframes where only parents could reach!
These play boards are usually quite overpriced. Good job for making one a home, dad!
This is such a great idea! I'm just not sure about the slide and chain locks though. A small child could learn how to use them and end up stuck outside. Children don't have an inbuilt sense of danger... Maybe I'm overreacting...
My dog steals dolls from the day care where I live rural ski resort, the employees kids toss them out. He brings them home and plants them in our garden.
This way you are sure that the damned kids will not come to you asking for candy. GENIUS! 😈
Public records? Or just the same one copied 100 times?
Load More Replies...WOW!!! I'm wondering how long it took to get it assembled and what the paper is attached to and with what.
The one I saw being assembled, as in a paper dress? It's most likely a huge wired frame underneath for the shape and the paper will be stuck on with glue.

i love that all the screws have their slots lined up....this person has najor ocd
We moved into a large house with multiple light switches all over the place. Took about 6 months to memorize which did what.
i've done this twice--doesn't have to be just at the beach, but it does show up better there
I need one for me, honestly. I can remember taking my meds if I have an alarm on my phone, but everything else is currently out of the question. Showering, remembering to borrow and return library books, reading those three very long booklets on ADHD someone sent me…
I love it that the last thing this kid should do is reading books. Sweet dreams, little one!
My sister was somewhat into pottery. As she was able to afford building a house they made their own custom kitchen tiles, some with handprints of her 4 little girls. The nieces are now mostly young adults, but she still has their small handprints scattered on her kitchen wall 🥰🥰🥰
I'm not sure if I like this one. Nobody should damage other people's property, so that's not cool, no matter the situation. But I don't know about "Fragile Masculinity". The guy might have just found out his parent died, or other tragedy. Yes, people get calls in weird places. I was a contractor (software development) for a while, and my contracting company had one of their monthly meetings. A guy found out on the phone during the meeting that his Dad had died in a car accident. He didn't punch anything, but I would have understood if he did.
Load More Replies..."You punch a hole in the wall and I framed it." P!nk - Beautiful Trama
According to your other comments it would appear you prefer that wall to be a woman. Then you would call it "strong" masculinity. The rest of us call it little d**k syndrome.
Load More Replies...Thing is, loads of people don't want to 'ruin' old furniture, but few people want to buy it as it is. It's better to customize and use it than to leave it rotting in a garage.
Load More Replies...Pish posh, Nitka. The Lego makeover is infinitely better. Unless you're from pre Cold War Russia.
Why must I be from pre Cold War Russia to like something old? Nearly all my furniture is old. I like things like that. But I can still appreciate the new look. It would be great for my children's play room.
Load More Replies...The Lego drawers are beautiful and cheery, but I for one would not be able to grasp those handles to open them. Younger, more agile hands could, and that's who would own this design. But to me, they look painful.
Kiddo has the monster claw going on. Mom's about to get spooked! Good family fun makes for a good family.
I wonder what my dog would have made of it. She would often browse the outdoor salad bars. Her speciality was gently plucking radishes. However, she wasn't a fan on inside greenery.
Load More Replies...Dogs drink by splashing water up and catching it (https://www.latimes.com/science/sciencenow/la-sci-sn-how-dogs-drink-20151215-story.html); cats drink by touching their curled back tongue to the water and pulling it right back up (https://news.mit.edu/2010/cat-lapping-1112).
My mastiff had a froggy shaped mouth, he would get water in, and it would rain out the sides. I kept his bowl in a plastic winter sled because a dish basin was too small to catch the drips.
My daughter was always more likely to do random chores if I wrote it on a nice note instead of verbalizing it ("I forgot" was usually the response later)... later when she had a phone, I'd text it (always being very specific).."please empty the dishwasher before 5:45 pm. I really appreciate your help." That way, I never had to ask if she did the task, because she had a two hour window to do it, and she organized her time well. No one likes to be told to empty the dishwasher "now" because they might be in the middle of reading a chapter (or whatever), and they feel like they have lost control of their time. They become wary that every time you want to speak with them you're going to ask them to do chores. Much easier this way.
This is so smart. Like Lyone Fein said, it opens more communication pathways. That can be super important for kids that are nonverbal or struggle with direct face to face communication. It also gives the kids a sense of ownership. I might even take it a step further, with a little notepad where they can jot things down they might need to talk about, while removing the anxiety of asking outright.
Another fun idea. My house is 120 years old though and the hallways are super narrow. If I do this outside the kid's rooms there won't be space to get down the hall.
Im a girl who loved playing with hot wheels and monster trucks I would have loved this as a kid, heck even now lol
That is so cool! But can you leave the cars out when you are done playing with it? Or do the cats play with them?
Because *of course * they have a cat. Doesn't everyone?
Load More Replies...Easy. Tie a thread to it, attach to a cup ring or similar higher up. Then string thread to a different spot elsewhere in room. Pull thread to wiggle 'lizard' now and then. The cats will never forgive you,
Load More Replies...One morning I had let my indoor cat out on the front steps for some fresh air before work. He came back in with something black in his mouth... I thought it was a roach or something was biting him (he was meowing excitedly like I hadn't heard before). I yelped loudly, he dropped it and a huge black lizard was now loose in my house. But he caught it again and i brought the cat back outside with the lizard in his mouth and wouldn't let him back inside till he put it back where he found it. He was so sad after. So I cut out several copies of a lizard on black paper and put them in several strategic places, he was fascinated for months.
No, Morko the Ork, they're that playful and alert for both toys and prey.
They're predators, so that's a literal instinct.

I'm using these as bumpers on my corrugated sheet metal raised gardening beds. I cut myself assembling it so when I do use it, the pool noodles should protect me. They aren't ugly, I didn't like the black so I spray painted mine brushed nickel before I hung it up with the candles.
Amazing! I just hope they covered the top with some kind of waterproof material, at least when it rains.
A good tip I read about making [these] homes, is not to drill in the end grain. It cracks easily = not good for the inhabitants. Better drill from the face grain(is that the correct term?). And as deep as possible, preferably more than 5 cm ( ~2"), because of predatory insects laying their eggs in others nests. That said, I have this exact type here, and it works and thrive - but it do crack, and a plus is to protect it against birds, especially wood peckers during winter!
Also good to drill at an angle so rainwater can drain away
Load More Replies...The one I tried to make a few years ago didn’t work for some reason. I’m wondering if it only works in colder climates (I live near the nsw/qld border Australia). The ants love it but not much else uses it

The idea is sentimental and all but I don't think I'd want home furnishings to be made out of old booger rags. But that's just me.
LOL. I inherited both my father's and my husband's grandmother's handkerchiefs and I use them all the time. They were washed. Granted, some are used to wipe my stamps but I always have one in my pocket, purse, bed, ready to use.

It's adorable but it must get messed up in bad weather unless they somehow can still put the lid down.
With the way my jeans usually wear out, this is not possible, but I like the idea!
Yeah, if I cut mine off where they wear through they'd be little more than a thong... and I ain't no Daisy Duke, I can tell you.

So I cut them off—-to the shorts inseam I like and am comfortable wearing, plus shorts with a bit of room in them, since they seem to like to make all women’s shorts into really tight Daisy Dukes these days—-and now I have several pairs of shorts, some denim and some in three colors of Dockers. The spare denim/Docker legs have been made into shoe bags.
LOL. This took some time for somebody to think of. I'll be 65 in 2 years and some of this c**p has already happened to me.
