“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me” is one of the most incorrect sayings of all time. Idiotic opinions, fallacies, and outright untruths are all, unfortunately, broadcasted over the internet for everyone to see, meaning that all of us have to see, hear, and read the very worst words and ideas humans can put together.

The “Facepalm” internet group gathers all those moments when people really did or said something so unbelievable that it caused a visceral reaction to all onlookers. And through the magic of the internet, it can reach you too. So be sure to upvote your “favorites” and comment your thoughts below.

Burnnnnnnnnnnnn

Burnnnnnnnnnnnn

Aether-0917 Report

The oldest use of the word “facepalm” (but not the actual, physical action) dates back to the early days of the internet. In 1996, where the first netizens mentioned it in a variety of posts about everyday life. This points to the fact that this phrase was in the popular lexicon earlier, as the posters do not clarify what the word means and use it nonchalantly.

However, the actual post, of holding one’s face in your palm, is relatively old, and found in statues and sculptures going back hundreds, if not thousands of years. Normally, it was associated with more serious loss, like Henri Vidal’s Caïn, depicting the biblical figure mourning the death of his own brother, who he killed.

Due to the internet and the general ubiquity of this emotion, the facepalm remains popular, to such a degree that there is even a facepalm emoji (Unicode U+1F926) and a vast library of stock images depicting this action. While commonly reaction images of humans facepalming were used, one can now even find animals doing the gesture, most likely by accident, but it’s always fun to imagine a cat actually facepalming.

I feel that, I am in Texas too. I will be forever haunted by memories of grown men having toddler-like temper tantrums, or the fact that my family refused to don masks for a couple hours so that I, their immunocompromised daughter/granddaughter/sister, could join them for Christmas in 2020.

I live in East Germany and we definitely had quite enough idiots refusing to wear masks. A local baker refused to serve my husband, an emergency doctor and anesthetist on his way to work in a covid ward, because he wore a mask. He explained to them that he's protecting THEM and they sneered that it was such a shame that every single thing in the whole bakery had already been reserved by other customers and so they couldn't sell him anything. Idiots marched in protest on the university clinic, and doctors and medical students stood together against them. I wouldn't argue that America isn't the winner, but Germany is definitely not immune to ridiculous stupidity.

Let's be honest, WE ALL have f*ckwits but it does seem that the US does seem to have more than it's fair share of them. The fact that Trump got to be President was a clear indication of that. That so many Americans were so vehimently anti-vax is a sad indictment of the dumbing down of the country. I feel so sorry for those Americans who are sensible and compassionate.

It's kind of true. Like, in other countries we had anti-maskers but they mostly complied when they really had to, they just bitched and moaned the whole time. You didn't seem to have the same proportion of people going into stores unmasked and looking to start a fight, then screaming about their "freedoms" when they got challenged. The vaccine restrictions set a lot of people right off though.

Besides, I wear a half mask for work from time to time, and I find it a million times more comfortable than a well fitted N95. There was a hoo-ha about masks all across Europe, and even a number of anti-masker demonstrations in Germany. The idea was hardly only in the USA, Europeans are still people with different ideas. Not at all agreeing with them, only stating that it was very much not limited to America by a long shot.

Antimaskers are everywhere, it's not just America. They were quiet in early days of pandemic, but later, they started complaining too loudly, because doing bare minimum (like wearing mask) is sooo terrible. And government actually listened to them and cancelled all restrictions too early. And as a result, Czechia was "best in covid".

my personal belief as to why so many people here in the u.s. are against masks isn't just because they are ignorant of how viruses are transmitted. in regards to masks - and many other issues - is that we have been taught that we are a nation of freesoms and, therefore, we have the right to do what we want regardless of how it affects others. yes we do have freedoms & are proud that we have them. but, it is insane that some feel that their freedoms are more important than others, including their right to infect others. this belief is carried over into all aspects of life and it shouldn't happen. there is a difference between acting for personal freedom & acting for the collective good. but -gasp! - say that to someone and you are immediately called a socialist, communist, marxist. it is why ppl have such a fit about universal health care as ppl don't want to help others. but, if they were in the need of something you damn well know that they would be screaming for help

Trump even had Covid, though his case was mild, which led him to scoff at masks even more. And this idiot wants to run again! Lord help us all!

This guy does not know about "every country in the world." Sweden never went into lockdown and almost nobody wore a mask . Switzerland had only six weeks of lockdown and there were constant protests by the nearly half of the nation that didn't want to wear masks. I was living in California at the time. California went into lockdown for over a year. Children did not go to school for a year (which had a devastating effect on both their health and education). Every public place was closed except supermarkets and pharmacies, where people waited in long lines to get in because only a few were allowed at once. It was not permitted to visit anyone. Children did not have playdates or activities for a year. Even playgrounds were taped up, so the kids had nowhere to go. Never did l see a single person not wear a mask. Please just learn facts before you go on a nonsense rant just because American bashing is trendy in Europe.

This will probably get downvoted as well, but masks did almost nothing. As explained by JFK jr. in “The Real Anthony Fauci” they only really worked if the person wearing it was sick. On top of that, Fauci has been adding many things into modern medicine that just get the patient sick. Why? To get them back in the hospital and pay more money. Don’t believe me? Because those of us who understand epidemiology, and proper use of PPE know that it had NOTHING to do with virus control, and everything to do with virtue signaling. You want to stop a virus? You need something that stops objects smaller than 13 micron, which what those masks are rated for-- virii are about 5 to 7 microns. Also, masks are not meant to be worn endlessly-- they need to be changed out, and significant issues occur with prolonged wearing. But keep on in you happy ignorance. Sheep for the fodder.

A fair share of Americans didn’t care, then the apathy/indifference reached Canada. At the point when our country became divided between anti maskers and pro maskers the Government conveniently dropped mandates. The Government, ( Canadian), also promised financial support for Canadians in sectors hit hard by Covid- alas CERB/CWLB turned out to be a ‘loan’ on the backs of vulnerable Canadians so the businesses that actually ‘count’ wouldn’t be affected because otherwise that would mean an economic crisis…

The Canadian Government made it virtually impossible to qualify, ( ie having to ‘prove’ that one was entitled), once things had stabilized. Pierre Trudeau made so many incredible advances for Canadians, sadly his successors have been horrendous, the worst of which is Justin Trudeau. I was so proud of our country when it was announced that there would be a benefit, then so ashamed when it was recalled, with interest of course.

After all these decades of getting away with BSing most of the world, it took the murder of George Floyd and the pandemic to really put an unwavering spotlight on the good ole US of A. You'd think that global embarrassment would've speeded up positive change here, but see, that's where all you foreigners would be wrong. It emboldened this country to double down by overturning Roe v Wade (Handmaid is a reality), banning books (451 Fahrenheit is a reality), and attempting to eradicate trans people (Stonewall 2 perhaps). For those that see something not worth a full facepalm, as it is a bit dramatic at times, you can use the good old disappointed head shake, that one’s grandparents will tactically deploy when they see anything that confuses them. Over text, one can quickly and easily communicate their disappointment with the good old acronym smh (shaking my head) which is actually older than good old facepalm.

On the other hand, should one need to deploy stronger language, there is always the trusty face desk aka the head desk. While we do not recommend you actually do this, be sure to upvote the posts that go beyond a facepalm. This is a stronger emotion, one so visceral that the victim wants to physically bash the thing they just read or heard right out of their head.

I once saw a guy in his car crossing himself before starting to drive at a green light. This was in Athens and traffic was hell (2003).

The reality is that there have always been people who might cause us to facepalm. Bad decisions and horrible opinions are deeply human and probably existed before language. So it’s overall a net positive that we have methods to immediately “get it out of our system” when someone does something so deeply idiotic that it makes us feel bad by proxy. As long as we don’t facepalm too hard.

I'm conflicted on this one. Funny? Yes. A bit dark? Sure. My dad was max oxygen during covid and was fully vaccinated. He did previously have lung cancer and emphysema before he passed. Nope, still funny. Sorry dad I got my sense of humor from you.

Similarly, while the internet allows us to see more facepalm-inducing moments, on the flip side, it lets us publicly shame people with ideas this bad and it communicates to others who might have similar ideas that in reality, they are wrong and should keep it to themselves. Someone is not a bad person for being wrong but sticking by an objectively terrible opinion even when presented with contrary evidence is pretty childish. If you want to keep facepalming, Bored Panda has got you covered, check out our other article on this topic here

Perfectly legal under the 13th Amendment. Former slaves were often arrested in the South to be used as (slave) prison labor. 13A is ironically part of the root of today's mass over-incarceration in the US.

Rich kids get free meals from their parents. These people must think that rich kids eat at their leisure because their little fellows somehow earned it. I know sometimes I feel entitled to my privileges, but this is a whole other level.
