“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me” is one of the most incorrect sayings of all time. Idiotic opinions, fallacies, and outright untruths are all, unfortunately, broadcasted over the internet for everyone to see, meaning that all of us have to see, hear, and read the very worst words and ideas humans can put together.

The “Facepalm” internet group gathers all those moments when people really did or said something so unbelievable that it caused a visceral reaction to all onlookers. And through the magic of the internet, it can reach you too. So be sure to upvote your “favorites” and comment your thoughts below.

Burnnnnnnnnnnnn

Burnnnnnnnnnnnn

Aether-0917 Report

The oldest use of the word “facepalm” (but not the actual, physical action) dates back to the early days of the internet. In 1996, where the first netizens mentioned it in a variety of posts about everyday life. This points to the fact that this phrase was in the popular lexicon earlier, as the posters do not clarify what the word means and use it nonchalantly.

However, the actual post, of holding one’s face in your palm, is relatively old, and found in statues and sculptures going back hundreds, if not thousands of years. Normally, it was associated with more serious loss, like Henri Vidal’s Caïn, depicting the biblical figure mourning the death of his own brother, who he killed.

Due to the internet and the general ubiquity of this emotion, the facepalm remains popular, to such a degree that there is even a facepalm emoji (Unicode U+1F926) and a vast library of stock images depicting this action. While commonly reaction images of humans facepalming were used, one can now even find animals doing the gesture, most likely by accident, but it’s always fun to imagine a cat actually facepalming.

For those that see something not worth a full facepalm, as it is a bit dramatic at times, you can use the good old disappointed head shake, that one’s grandparents will tactically deploy when they see anything that confuses them. Over text, one can quickly and easily communicate their disappointment with the good old acronym smh (shaking my head) which is actually older than good old facepalm.

On the other hand, should one need to deploy stronger language, there is always the trusty face desk aka the head desk. While we do not recommend you actually do this, be sure to upvote the posts that go beyond a facepalm. This is a stronger emotion, one so visceral that the victim wants to physically bash the thing they just read or heard right out of their head.

The reality is that there have always been people who might cause us to facepalm. Bad decisions and horrible opinions are deeply human and probably existed before language. So it’s overall a net positive that we have methods to immediately “get it out of our system” when someone does something so deeply idiotic that it makes us feel bad by proxy. As long as we don’t facepalm too hard.

Similarly, while the internet allows us to see more facepalm-inducing moments, on the flip side, it lets us publicly shame people with ideas this bad and it communicates to others who might have similar ideas that in reality, they are wrong and should keep it to themselves. Someone is not a bad person for being wrong but sticking by an objectively terrible opinion even when presented with contrary evidence is pretty childish. If you want to keep facepalming, Bored Panda has got you covered, check out our other article on this topic here

And if you're homeless (USA), but you want to transition into renting, you have to save up for first month's rent, last month's rent, and the deposit. But you're only allowed to have a small quantity of money in the bank or cash in hand in order to qualify for services as a homeless person. It is mind-bogglingly difficult to manage your life when you are low or very low income. Every time you try to make an improvement in your life, you come against these obstacles.

If you're disabled and receiving SSDI the asset allowance is $2000. Which probably sounds like a lot to some people but it makes it hard to save for deposit, car repairs or purchasing a vehicle, or anything really considering $2000 is barely covering bills and food even with support programs.

It isnt quite that easy. When you own mortage is only a part of the costs. Then you have to have utilities, insurance (never get cheap on that), and all those little costs that add up. And enough money saved to be able to do unexpected repairs. Everything with a house costs money. And as the interest rates has been booming, lots of people getting their house loans based on a low interest rate is struggling to keep it, and it still is just 3-4%, soon it is expected to be 5% or even more. Add in the insurance, taxes and upkeep you have to pay yourself and that $950 mortgage easily doubles. Can you afford $1900? That's why your bank turned you down.

In fairness, a mortgage is a 30 year commitment, rent can be anywhere from 30 days to 2 years. And the process to recoup the hundreds of thousands of dollars from the loan is a lot more difficult than evicting a tenant. That's to say nothing of being able to maintain the home for 30 years, which can cost a lot of more than the difference between that rent vs mortage over the long run. Which is important to the lender if they need to recoup their costs. I do think prolong rent paying, especially if you don't move around, should count in terms of your loan-worthiness. But no, rent vs being able to pay a mortgage is just not the same. You can blame capitalism all you want, but it's much more complicated than two numbers.

No no no no no. Have you ever got a credit card or loan? Where do the banks get this money from? I’ll tell you where…. They have these magic trees that simply create as much money as they are willing to give to you at the click of a button. It’s 110% profit It’s a win win Surely they get to repossess you house if you can’t pay. Isn’t that how it works? First they send the boys round to get your tv and washing machine, then once they have done that enough times and they know you are completely flat out broke. They’ll shut off the power and kick you to the curb. No lie, I saw it on tv once. Oh and I agree with you that it is far more complicated than the chit chat we’re all having on here. Sorry no offence MR. FYI I actually only read the whole of your comment after actually writing mine. So it’s a bit off tangent, you did make a good point but banks are thieves and there is no defending such crimes that affect our economy and democracy.

No s**t, I pay food, electric, 2 cells, propane a 2015 car (in amazing condition!), gas, insurance and still have enough left to buy a new car but can't freakin' lease one! LOL!

I would add that $950 is great until you need a $40,000 new roof. That's why mortgage lenders require higher income multiples than for rental.

Banks calculate also if your earning show you have the likelhood of paying back over 20 or 30 years, short term v long term ability, because they lose money if you default and they sell below value at auction to recoup losses. They also calculate in your estimated property tax, insurance costs, etc, within that calculation. So a a $950/mo mortgage + another $4k in property tax yearly, plus insurance. Then they go against your credit rating for liability, and your earnings for long term viability. People dont understand how the process works

I know I'm going to get down voted again, but I hate this post and have seen it so many times. There's a lot of factors that go into underwriting for a mortgage. For all we know, this person is in bankruptcy and that's the reason for the denial. Your monthly mortgage might be $950, but when you add in escrow, insurance, property taxes and HOA fees, you're looking at double your payment. That doesn't include cost of maintenance and other suprise expenses. My mortgage itself is $855/m. Add in everything I stated above, I pay $1650/m. That doesn't include maintenance. These factors are known when underwriting a loan.

I'm NOT condoning the bank's side of this. Trust me. I went through this hell. But does that referenced mortgage payment include expenses like, property taxes, home insurance, liability insurance, plus any additional fees that protect the bank's investment? Plus, the bank expects homeowners to properly maintain the premises, so that's another expense you have to set aside for. Until you own a home, you can't imagine what expense is coming around the corner. And they're never cheap. Never.

And before we get mad at the banks, let’s remember that after the housing crisis in 2008, the government stepped in and set debt to income limit the banks are required to follow when approving a loan. The bank would’ve made this loan if they could, but it may have set you up for failure when you didn’t think of things like property tax and homeowners insurance which is WAY higher than renters insurance. Not to mention if it was an adjustable rate mortgage. Without those parameters that all banks have to follow, we’d likely be looking at another housing crisis right now seeing as how Prime has jumped over 4% in just over a year.

Okay. I get the sentiment but a rent payment includes ALL maintenance, plumbing, electrical, etc. costs that can take that $950 mortgage payment to $2000 a month EASY. Buying a house is ALWAYS more expensive than renting. Argue all you want but it's very very true. When you get a mortgage you're asking that bank to trust that not only will you pay your mortgage but that you will pay for everything else that house requires to stay functional and live able. I promise you, if a bank said no it's because you are a financial risk and will likely miss payments or default. Banks don't make lending decisions flippantly, so don't just say things because you're bitter
