Mistakes are inevitable. No matter how prepared you (think you) are, no matter how lucky you were born, at some point in time, you’re going to get into an accident that might set you back a lot financially. It hurts. It’s embarrassing. It’s devastating. But the silver lining is that you’re far from the only person to be in this predicament—lots of people can empathize with you.

Our team at Bored Panda has collected some of the most expensive fails to ever be shared on the internet, from smashed phones and broken home appliances to damaged cars and wrecked homes. Scroll down to check out the pics below. Remember, no matter how bad you think things can get, they can get a lot worse—and that, ironically, makes you more grateful for what you already have.

We wanted to learn how we can all become more financially and emotionally resilient no matter what may come, as well as how we can resist the temptation to keep upgrading our things to the latest models. Personal finance expert Sam Dogen, the founder of Financial Samurai and the author of Millionaire Milestones: Easy Steps to Seven Figures (out May 2025), was kind enough to share his thoughts on this. You'll find Bored Panda's interview with him below.

I never understood this. The hose could be draped over the top of the car instead of through the car, without losing much length. I think they break the windows to make a point.

When pressurized they move and can exert a lot of force. But yes, they do it for fun, it's not a real necessity.

"Financial shocks are inevitable—it’s not if they’ll happen, but when. The key to resilience is preparation, adaptability, and having the right mindset," Dogen explained to Bored Panda via email.

"The best financial defense is a cash cushion. Having 6–12 months’ worth of living expenses in a liquid account gives you breathing room when the unexpected happens. It’s not exciting, but cash provides options, and options reduce stress. At the same time, diversifying income streams is just as crucial. Relying on a single paycheck is risky, so whether it’s rental income, dividends, or a side hustle, having multiple sources of income makes you far more resilient when financial storms hit," the personal finance expert advised.

It's also essential to distinguish between the things that are within your control and those that you can't affect while also being active rather than passive. "Beyond financial preparation, controlling what you can control is just as important. You can’t prevent market crashes, layoffs, or recessions, but you can manage your spending, continuously build new skills, and make sure your investment portfolio is structured to withstand downturns. If you stay proactive instead of reactive, you’ll always be in a stronger position," Dogen said.

You take a photo of your smashed package inside the too small box, go to the PO, with the evidence and file a complaint - probably can do this online nowadays. Since the postal worker didn't follow directions, they are liable for replacement. The postal worker should've left one of those notes telling you to pick your oversized package up at the office, not cram it into the box.

"And when setbacks do happen, reframing them as temporary is key. No financial hardship lasts forever, and history has shown that recoveries always follow downturns. Hence, if we're talking about a big stock market sell-off, dollar-cost average in and stay the course. The people who win are those who keep a long-term perspective and use tough times as opportunities to learn, adapt, and even invest when others panic," he said.

"At the end of the day, resilience isn’t about avoiding financial hardship altogether—it’s about being prepared enough to navigate it with confidence and come out stronger on the other side."

Owning the newest models, makes, and gadgets might sound cool, but it can be a (bigger) drain on your finances. And if you feel compelled to keep upgrading everything all the time, you can feel like you're no longer in control. Bored Panda asked personal finance expert Dogen about resisting this temptation to keep buying the newest things.

"Some people are driven to own the newest, most expensive gadgets, cars, and status symbols because of a mix of psychological and social factors—fear of missing out (FOMO), the thrill of novelty, and the belief that these upgrades signal success. Marketers are brilliant at making us feel like what we have is suddenly outdated, nudging us to spend money unnecessarily," the founder of Financial Samurai explained.

"But if you step back and ask, Is my current phone, car, or gadget still doing its job? The answer is probably 'yes.' The trick to resisting the urge to constantly upgrade is shifting your mindset from chasing to appreciating. If you focus on functionality over hype, you’ll realize that holding onto something longer—especially when it still works just fine—is an underrated wealth-building move," he said.

"One of the most important personal finance ratios I’ve developed is The House-To-Car Ratio. If you want to build more wealth, aim for a ratio of 30 or higher. The reasoning is simple: a house is generally an appreciating asset, while a car is almost always a depreciating one," Dogen told us.

"To improve your ratio, either buy a less expensive car or hold onto your car longer. As your car’s value declines over time, your House-To-Car Ratio naturally increases—letting depreciation work in your favor instead of against you. The longer you resist the temptation to upgrade, the more your wealth compounds where it truly matters."

(this was way back in the 1980's Newfoundland) Yes, we had a fridge BUT growing up his family did not and with 11 Children leftovers were far and few-someone would eat it - Muscle Memory. So, not knowing this, a few days later I preheated the oven to bake bread. After a few minutes, I checked on the the oven and Yup, there they were. I'm retired but I used to be the night shift supervisor for Women's and Newborn Services. Labor and Delivery was on the second floor. Below, they were installing an MRI. As part of the process, they had to drill holes in my labor deck's roof. It was winter in Southern California, and the contractors said they covered the holes in my L&D unit's roof. We got one of those atmospheric rivers one weekend. I get a text telling me it's RAINING in the educator's office. And I had waterfalls outside of two of my labor rooms. I told them to call security to open my office as well as the educator's office and move as much stuff from her office to mine. We also had a large TV that we used as a patient tracker. It took it about a month to dry out, and it was never the same way again. Fun times.

According to Dogen, another great exercise is to calculate what you would save by delaying unnecessary upgrades and investing that money instead. "Put $1,000 into the market instead of a new phone, and in 20 years, that could be worth $5,000 or more. Small decisions like this compound over time and can mean the difference between financial independence and being stuck on the hedonic treadmill," he said.

Had an employee who dropped a full 5 gallon container of white paint on a customers relatively new driveway. We scrubbed up as much as we could while it was still wet and finished cleaning with a pressure washer. But we initially wasted precious seconds standing there with our mouths dropped open staring at the mess.

You cannot allow yourself to live in constant fear and paranoia that something bad will happen, because all that chronic worry will destroy your health. Naturally, many things will inevitably go wrong in your life. Over and over again. Mistakes, accidents, and rejection are a part of life. How you react to situations that you can’t control, despite your best preparation, is what matters.

On the one hand, you can blame yourself and/or the world for your bad luck, and stew in your misery. On the other hand, you can see failure as an opportunity for growth, flexibility, and improvement. (You get bonus points if you can laugh and stay optimistic in the face of adversity.)

Some mistakes are going to cost you more money, time, and energy than others. Spilling your morning coffee on your shirt during rush hour can be embarrassing and yucky, but it’s likely not going to break the bank. Having your car, home, or expensive new gadget wrecked due to a run of bad luck, meanwhile, is going to set you back immensely.

Your ability to weather the storm is going to depend on your character (i.e., how you respond to immense stress) and your finances (whether or not you have enough resources to replace the loss).

Broadly speaking, the better off you are financially, the more of a safety net you have when it comes to unforeseen events. If your income is bigger than your expenses, if you’ve got enough savings and investments, then you can quite easily pay to repair the damage done without compromising your lifestyle. Not everyone is as lucky, though.

On the other hand, if you’re living paycheck to paycheck, every additional expense can be a major headache that forces you to sacrifice important aspects of your life, whether that’s paying for food, fuel, bills, clothes education, etc.

Repairing a damaged phone, appliance, or car isn’t just an inconvenience, it’s now a question of survival. That’s why it’s so important to have some sort of emergency budget that you can fall back on when times get tough.

I had to get an MRI once. A very helpful (troll) friend sent me a bunch of links to articles and pictures of things like this happening. One of the more common idiocies are people allowing oxygen tanks near the machines, which can mean death if someone is in the machine - either due to blunt force, or oxygen o******e. Edit: I love that you can read death in my post, but not 0verdose.

MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging so the machine itself is essentially a giant magnet when in use (I'm not in the medical field so just going off experience here). You're told prior to entering that you CANNOT have metal anywhere on or in your body as there's the potential for it to be ripped out which is being displayed here, except in this case, the equipment wasn't appropriately removed from the room.

    Ever Make A $100,000 Mistake?

"Spilled purple substance in truck unloading area highlights costly accident aftermath."

Recently moved to shipping for a ink making company. While unloading a dark trailer, I punctured a 2000# tote of water based ink. The entire thing emptied in a matter of seconds. The entire trailer, dock door, and outside was turned blue. Even thou its water based it still had water pollutants in it so EPA had to be called in due to it getting into the sewer. The specialty company that was called in to clean up has spent the last 3 weeks digging up the sewer and surrounding ground that had been contaminated. A few days of heavy rain hasnt helped the clean up at all. Needless to say I had a nervous break down and missed 2 days of work. Got a call asking if I quiting, which would possibly lead to criminal charges. Being close to 3 weeks out I can finally think back and sorta laugh at this situation.

My semi slowly leaked diesel while I was parked overnight at a shipper. Gravel lot. California. By the time a contractor dug all the contaminated stuff out and redid half the lot per EPA, it was over $100,000. Fortunately it was the fault of the shop who replaced the fuel tank…. And yes, I always do a complete pre & post trip inspection

At the local Walmart, an idiot trucker who had spent the night in their parking lot apparently realized he had water in one of his diesel tanks. So he drained it, right there in their lot. Then he left without mentioning it to anyone. They had to do the entire hazmat cleanup, EPA, everything. Apparently incredibly expensive. The bad news for the driver was the security cameras Walmart has in their parking lots. The CRST on the truck was easy enough to read. Between that and another driver who needed to take a dump but couldn't be bothered to walk into the store, they no longer allow semi parking at the local Walmart.

Negligence, breach of contract, abandonment of duty, etc. Depending on the nature of the mistake and the employee’s contract, or company policy, the company could have plenty of reason to sue for damages.

Any emergency fund is better than having nothing, but obviously, the bigger it is, the more flexibility you have when you have to replace an expensive item, transition between jobs, deal with sudden illnesses, etc.

That being said, you also want to enjoy yourself, eat well, invest in your health and fitness, take care of your family, travel, and spend time on your hobbies.

So you have to find a balance between saving enough money each month to forge a sizeable emergency fund (and, ideally, also setting aside another part of your savings for investing) and actually spending your money to make the most of life.

HSBC notes that your emergency fund is the money you save and put aside to cover a financial shock without going into debt. This fund, hopefully, gives you some peace of mind that you can weather the storm.

According to the bank, you should aim to have between 3 and 6 months’ essential expenses covered. The fund should be enough for you to pay your rent or mortgage, groceries, and utilities.

You can ask the site supervisor - give them your receipt for new tire and they will replace. We had that happen SEVERAL times. Most accept it as business.

A large part of figuring out how big your emergency fund should be comes down to being honest with yourself while you look through all of your expenses. It can be uncomfortable, but you have to figure out what you can back on in case of a financial shock.

For instance, getting a cup of coffee in town and going for dinner at a nice restaurant are, obviously, things many people enjoy, but they aren’t essential.

Other areas where you can cut back when things get tough include paying for streaming and other services, expensive food deliveries, vacations, shopping for random things online, etc.

Furthermore, you can always consider replacing your damaged gadgets and appliances with (hopefully) more physically resilient and budget-friendly variants. The freshest upgrade might not always make the most sense economically.

From the Daily Mail: "Among the photos is one that shows gallons of paint splashed all over the road, after the crane that was carrying them apparently dropped them all." Looks like too much carnage to be dropped from a low height. Makes me wonder if they were trying to lift them over a building.

However, not everyone agrees with the idea behind the fund worth 3 to 6 months of expenses. For many families, this is a lofty goal that is very difficult to reach.

Economist Emily Gallagher from the University of Colorado Boulder told CNBC Select that low-income American households should aim to save $2,467. This amounts to roughly a month’s worth of income if you’re earning around $30,000 per year in a family of four. This is a more realistic target, according to Gallagher.

When my father was station in the Panama Canal Zone our house was right on the 6th hole. We got hit by golf balls all the time. No windows were broken while we lived there but we found a lot of golf balls. Back then they were made with rubber bands inside. Our dogs liked to chew the covers off and the balls would unravel all over the place.

CNN reports that American shoppers may be “starting to tap out” as their spending slows. Retail sales rose just 0.2% in February compared to January 2025, as per the Commerce Department. This was lower than the 0.7% increase that was projected and expected. In other words, Americans are becoming more cautious of their spending as they’re becoming more stretched.

Spending in February declined the most at department stores, restaurants, bars, and gasoline stations. On the flip side, spending rose online and at health stores.

OT, but outside of lawns grass is considered an actual weed - and once you start breeding it for a lawn you "need" pesticides to "protect" it?? Whoever came up with the idea that green deserts (labour intensive, to boot!) are pretty? Poor cat isn’t feeling well! 😢 if it doesn’t seem like a regular hair ball, taker them to the vet! And always keep an eye on their litter box and their food and water intake. They might show ZERO signs of pain, so you always need to know if they are eating, drinking, peeing and pooping. And a disease can get worse really fast. Keep an eye on your little angels.

Why would the person renting the car having to have insurance, if it was the other party causing the damage? Or is insurance not mandatory, especially for trailers, where this happened?

Many years ago I worked at Lydd Airport in the UK. A guy was building a pillar with bricks on one side of the road about 2mtrs high. Then went and started doing the same on the other side. Another worker was going back and forth all day on a fork lift. Late in the day brick guy for some reason put wire across at the top(no idea why). Fork Lift guy came ploughing along hit the wire and bought the lot down. Cue about twenty blokes rolling round laughing.

I always tethered my tools to a belt around my waist so that if I lost my grip I could pull it back up and not worry about it bouncing off someone's head or a set piece. I continued to use this method in construction later on.

That doesn’t explain the mold on the seats though. It’s more likely due to moisture. I work at a couple dealerships and an old vehicle became moldy while sitting for a few weeks because the owner had left two open beverages inside, and when the liquid evaporated during a heat wave, it turned the interior into a steam room.

My mom did that once in the driveway at my parents' house. Which is on a hill. In the woods. She went inside and a moment later heard a massive crash. When she came back out she saw that her car was now wrapped around a tree at the bottom of the hill. :)

You mean the brake you’re supposed to use when parked? 😂 he forgot to engage it when he parked and the car rolled backwards because the driveway is steep. It doesn’t say that he used the ebrake as a system for stopping.

From what I could find on the OP: it was a flash flood, seal wasn't perfect, water sprayed in through the window and he and his wife were bracing against the flow with towels to try and stop it, basement was flooded in about 3 inches of water, they made makeshift sandbags wth sod due to more forecast storms, family was fine, basement carpet apparently reeked like death when they got the water clear and pulled it up.

I once ran a data center located in our building's basement, about 110 or so servers. Friday afternoon before a holiday weekend a user needed a new monitor. There was a spare in the server room. I went to get it; when I bent down to pick it up from the floor, I glanced through a cutout in a raised-floor tile and saw a movie - 'A River Runs Through It'. First call was to the building facilities people, second was to the boss to contact the clients and tell them we were going down NOW! Then I started powering down servers as fast as I could before the water got to the electrical junction boxes under that floor. A line carrying chiller water to an air handler was rubbing on a motor housing & wore through. We didn't lose a thing, and were back up in a few hours. Since we were in the basement, the water alarms were up at the ceiling, "since water could only leak in from heavy rain". I told the guy I thought that water runs downhill. His grin said someone else was due for a bad day.

Wow! I managed a dinosaur pen (old style computer room) with raised tile floors. That sounds like a horrific nightmare and I would have been tempted to cut the power over a managed shutdown. I'm amazed you didn't have water alarms down there. They're actually not bad to have around a house, too, especially laundry rooms.

Worst I ever saw was a coworker who left a valve open overnight. 30gpm (roughly 7 cubic meters per hour) pardon my freedom units) overnight for about 6hrs. 6*60*30 = 10,800g. Again pardon my freedom units.

Mind you- I enjoyed sending pics to friends for the shock value. Some were almost twice the size of my hand. Bra area/ face/ thighs ( I fell face down)

It happens. Nobody died, the house is still standing. Came home to my daughter in tears because she'd been boiling her breast pump to sterilise it and had fallen asleep. The water had boiled dry and the pump melted. But like I said to her: she was OK, the baby was OK, the kitchen was smoky but undamaged, the house was still standing, and the dogs were out with me so were fine. What else matters? Things can be replaced, but people and animals cannot.

I don't feel bad about this one. I looked up the company on the label and it's not medicine, it's very expensive snakeoil. They do average $200 per bottle though so that's accurate but the company website for this product reads like a late night informercial from the '90s.

I don’t personally use this, but it is skin care, rather than “snake oil”. They have a patent for the vitamin c formulation that runs out this year, so many will copy it, but that’s why it’s so popular and priced as so (I don’t personally agree with the price) - because it’s proven effective for people.

Honestly price is not a great way to judge cosmetics 😂 my absolute favourite brand ever, that works better than most higher-end brands, is super affordable.

Six HOURS? Couldn't that damage the hull / keel? (Great balance, BTW)

Probably not. Most boats that size have a strong hull and keel to allow the boat to be stored and transported on a trailer.

My dad once got a rowboat stuck in the Chesapeake Bay during low tide. We all laughed because my mom told him it would happen and he didn't believe her. So she sat outside with a drink watching him for over an hour until the tide came back in. :)

Don't store your perfumes in the bathroom, they should be stored cool and dark. Also when you have guests over a huge amount of them snoop in the medicine cabinet.

We did years of baseball with our kids and first rule is always park the furthest away. Even in little league where they can barely hit a ball two feet. Every once in a while, they get lucky.

Yuck. I hate perfume. I don't like it on me, or on anyone else. Most people don't know how to use it sparingly, and they practically bathe in it.

I thought this had to be BS so I looked it up. While Amazon did in fact have Dash Buttons to order a variety of items, they released the following in 2019 and this "bogus" order was supposedly placed in 2022. "Amazon is constantly evaluating our product and service offerings to best serve our customers. We are now offering customers more ways to shop than ever before, such as Alexa Shopping, smart reordering with an increasing selection of Dash Replenishment devices, Subscribe & Save, and virtual Dash Buttons. Because of the growth of these exciting new ways to shop, we are no longer supporting Dash Button devices. Beginning August 31, 2019, you won’t be able to use your Dash Button devices to reorder items. You can continue to order your products through the Amazon mobile app and Amazon.com, or by using your free virtual Dash Buttons."
