Not everyone is cut out for book-learning and that’s ok. Realistically, being able to name, say, every capital city in the world isn’t actually that useful. However, knowing the difference between a city, a continent and a country is possibly the bare minimum someone should still be aware of.

We’ve gathered some of the most wild examples of the Americans saying things that are simply an indictment of their education system. So get comfortable as you scroll through, prepare to be deeply confused and disturbed, be sure to upvote your favorites, and share your thoughts in the comments below.

ASL should be taught to people in the USA. Post is probably badly written but it's a valid point.

If the OP was trying to make a point that schools ought to offer ASL as a language option, I agree. Also I agree that ASL won't help you communicate to other deaf folks in other countries, just rudimentary stuff. ASL was developed by a French guy teaching at a Washington DC college for the deaf, and ASL is somewhat related to French sign language. ASL is completely worth learning, you never know when you might meet somebody who uses it

While it's idiotic to attempt to "flex" on this, the OP does have at least a smidgen of a point. Ford's choice to bring replaceable parts and the assembly line to car manufacturing certainly helped make cars both more affordable and more feasible.

Americans come to the world with the same enthusiasm that they bring to all-you-can-eat buffets: idealistic, in good intentions, and blissfully unaware of what they've loaded onto their plate. Part of the reason is simply geographical size. In a nation where driving to the next decent supermarket can take three hours (hyperbole, but still), boarding a train to another country and crossing borders seems as distant as taking a camel through Death Valley.

Most people grow up wandering beaches in Florida or Montana's small towns and believe that "world travel" is merely a longer car trip, tolls optional. Another baddie is our school curriculum that sometimes treats world history as an appendix to learning about American history. Students can rattle off the causes of the Civil War in excruciating detail but stall when asked who governed India prior to 1947.

While "British" and "British citizen" are often used interchangeably, they are not always the same. "Nationality" refers to one's legal affiliation with a country or state, while "citizenship" is a specific type of nationality. Scottish, Welsh, etc.

This is partially accurate. The electricity for a normal electric car needs energy produced from somewhere, and that somewhere might be a power plant using fossil fuels. The solar car uses the sun obvs

To be fair, if you had solar panels only on your car, it would probably take about a month to fully charge the battery. If you have them on a roof of a house, it's more about how many you have vs how much energy you need. If you don't have enough, then you'll likely need power from the city electrical grid, which is often produced with natural gas.

I just love the idea that someone thinks France has only a 100 people. I would be super impressed that France has pulled off so many achievements with only 100 people. Also, I would be impressed at the insane ratio of famous talented people in France. If there's only a 100 people, the average French inhabitant must be an Olympic medal winner ánd a famous singer ánd an important scientist, all at the same time 😄

I've traveled and lived abroad. I will say that (in my experience) the US has a higher median quality of international foods than many of the places I've traveled. Sure, if you want the best Chinese, go to China, or if you want Italian, go to Italy. But if you are in China, you're not going to find much good Italian. The US (due to such a robust immigrant population) has a higher average quality of many culinary traditions. And as a small note, US barbecue is a wonderful and delicious culinary style.

Here in Ohio (city of 2m metro area) I have, within 6 or so blocks of my house, authentic and delicious Mexican, middle Eastern, Greek, Indian, Italian and Texas bbq, all made by people from those regions. I'm a short bus ride away from fantastic Vietnamese, sushi and French. I can't recall such diversity or such quality in my stays in neighborhoods in Europe.

Depends where you live. I live in the high desert, like 6000 feet up. We don't have stores or taps everywhere, The state is sparsely populated, it's mostly just open gorgeous land. And no buildings for miles, or kilometers if you prefer, so yes, you need to bring your water, if you don't want to unalive yourself.

Language plays its part too. In many European countries, you’re more likely to encounter people who speak three or four languages by high school graduation. In the USA, however, learning something besides English is typically presented as an after-school elective for extra credit rather than as a required ability. Why bother, after all, if everyone else "speaks English"?

The density in Britain looks impressive but in the 1950s - 60s there was something like double the present mileage (kilometreage?). I dunno about the rest of Europe but there have certainly been many closures there too, I think.

China is about the size of the US. 20 years ago, China had zero miles of high speed rail. Today, it has 30,000 miles. (Let's say high speed is greater than 125 mph / 200 kph) The US had maybe a few hundred miles. Since then, it has added ... 20 miles. Note that the 20 miles is not split between freight and passenger :)

A factor would be warfare - pretty much from the 19th century onwards the train networks in Europe were build up massively. A lot of rails are also compatible since a lot of nations bought german trains before WW2 and tracks were converted during it

I absolutely dislike ACs especially how in the US you have to bring a sweater with you to go shopping in summer. But since we don't build our houses out of cardboard they don't get that hot, even in summer. Also, drinks are served cold because we have fridges. Not need to fill a glass with ice to pay a lot of money for 3 sips of the actual beverage. That is a scam and you think it's something to brag about?

Spelling is not grammar. It’s orthography. Usage is not grammar. It’s lexicography. Regional dialects are not grammar. People who speak of correct or incorrect “grammar” are usually referring to some other function of language.

Financial and logistical barriers erect a last shell of insulation. Passports used to be trinkets rather than necessities, and the cost and inconvenience of visas even deter inquiring minds. Holiday budgets are spent on the cost of flights, little left to go and visit museums or chat with locals when you're there. It's easier and cheaper to binge-watch a foreign drama on Netflix than to fly to its filming location, and you get subtitles instead of jet lag.

Like, y'know, "pre-" means before, but sometimes a prefix comes at the end of the word instead, so then what do you do? Pretty much nuthin', cuz like right there in the word "pretty" you can see that the p-r-e must not mean before, y'know? Like I'm pretty sure I'm right, and I'm right sure that I'm pretty. Or what if you sign a pre-nuptial agreement AFTER the wedding... then it's not PRE anymore, so I just don't trust prefixes. I get my fixes in other ways!

There are such barriers, though, that there is hope: every American who finally gets that Europe is not a Midwestern state, or that Africa is a continent, not a country, gets closer to being a world citizen. A spoonful of humility, a sense of humor, and the ability to say you've been blissfully unaware are where it begins. And who knows, once you observe the world doesn't end at your state line, you might find that the smorgasbord of human experience tastes a lot more delectable than you ever imagined.

It's already happening. In Europe lots of governments, corporations etc are taking steps towards eliminating American products and components in order to diminish or avoid to have economical exchanges with the USA. They are actively trying to cut off the USA economically wise. And I'm talking just about Europe, a place I know. I can assume other continents can/will do the same. Granted, the USA has a huge worldwide economy, but it can't beat all the world. The people that are going to have it worse, are the American ones.

While the claim here is false, California overall has a staggeringly large economy. Per Wikipedia: "If California was an independent nation, it would rank as the fourth largest economy in the world in nominal terms, behind Germany and ahead of Japan."

'Behind Germany'!!! Hence, California doesn't have a larger economy than the ~50 European countries as it is already behind one of them. If only the dumbªss who wrote that second comment had taken a second to check Wikipedia!!! SMH.

America is the country with the most disposable income, an aďɗiction to credit card debt and feels as if they need everything that they see. That's why all other countries market there. It would be silly to market to those who either dont have the money or the insatiable desire to buy literally every useless thing.

EU GDP: $18.59 trillion USD in 2023. LA County's GDP (2023 est.): ~$950 billion. This is only 5% of the EU GDP. That said, it is larger than the GDP of the following European countries: Austria, Ireland, Portugal, Greece, Finland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Poland, Switzerland.

Unfortunately, Puerto Rico seems to be unable to get together on exactly what they want to do. Last time I looked, about a third want to keep things the way they are, a third want independence, and a third want statehood. The 2024 referendum did have a majority voting for statehood, but several political parties called for boycotting the vote, since it didn't include maintaining the status quo.

Plus we have little things called laws that actually protect workers. Minimum wage is around $25/hr for this job. Plus an extra percentage for working between 7pm & 7am (as this person would, they ate a night stocker). And if it's a Saturday, that's time & a half. Sundays get double time. So, yep, $45/hr sounds about right. Any Americans get this much for stocking shelves??

Australia here. But let's not forget the cost of living here is way higher than what you have to pay. Our petrol (gas) at the moment where I live is $1.59 per litre which is 3.78 gallons so we are paying roughly $6.00 a gallon for gas. Our food prices are pretty high as are our houses. Health care is fantastic though. Our rent prices for a 3 bedroom house is roughly $500 per week and that's at the lower end of the scale. So you will excuse us if we get more in wages. The lucky people are the people who already own their own house which is increasingly hard to buy. A normal house in our area which is a 3 bedder (ours for instance if we wanted to sell it) you would have to pay $750,000.00 which is what we had it last valued at but Sydney prices, you would be paying in the millions. We usually have to pay roughly $6.00 for a large cup of coffee and a burger in a take away would cost you about $11.00. Even McDonalds and any kind of fast food place is pretty expensive now compared to a few years ago.

When I was in USA I noticed, that people were polite ONLY if tip was an option. Where you were not expected to tip you got worse treatment than by the legendary unfriendly soviet sales babushkas. But where tip was expected you got treated like their new BBF. It was so confusing - I newer knew what to expect. At home you can at least tell by the looks of the establishment- when you see 30 year old decor you get the babushkas, when you see new stuff and young people you know that the staff has min 100 hours of training on how to treat clients, increase sales and keep the public image of the company.

Australia has mandatory voting. Everyone enrolled has not only the right to vote, but the obligation to vote. Countries where there is no obligation to vote, like the US, can end up with 20% of the population electing a president. How democratic is that? Just saying.

Yes, actually, and precisely b/c of that pizzpoor showing. Our mil looked to be what we call 'sandbagging' (ie having a do-the-bare-minimum, dragging your feet attitude) in that parade. We have graduating boot camps, from this year, that march better than those in the parade. They were told to treat it as a ruck march (more of an extreme hike and less like a formal honor guard). It is noted that our mil was quietly reluctant about this parade; and it showed.

Let's see ... the world leading virologist during Corona was a ... german. Oxycodone was developed in ... germany. And, btw, we don't have thousands a week dying because they somehow are too stupid to use it. There's a huge span between the highest enjoyable dose and the lowest dangerous one, where stuff starts to taste weird and such ... wtf are you doing over there? Anyway, guess where H****n and Aspirin originate? They're both brands registered by Bayer in the late 19th century. Where's Bayer located? Yes. The earliest actually useful antibiotica came from the UK ... vaccinations in general have been developed, pre-understanding the nature of infections, in the Chinese Empire, Ottoman Empire and in northwest Africa, and may even predate the Eurofication of Murrika. Today's US citizens, mostly, are descendants of 19th century immigrants from ... Europe. Those who didn't make it here, one could add by bad intent, but nobody needs that.

When I was in High School (US), I realized that what we were taught as "World History" was actually just a brief overview of European history. The only time countries outside of Europe were mentioned was when some European country made contact with them. I admit that the education system here is a bit lacking.

Irish (Gaelic) is a different language than English. It’s not English pronounced differently, it’s a separate, incredibly old language. Most Irish people can speak English, like most Welsh people can speak English, but they have their own full languages and are proud of them, teach them in schools… I like the fact that British countries are all different from each other.

Along with inventions like the hypodermic needle, refrigerator, steam engine, tv, telephone, mri, atm’s, anaesthesia, insulin not to mention irn bru 😂 even fried chicken can be traced to Scottish roots.even the American navy was created by John Paul Jones, who’s Scottish. I’m not arguing that raw milk is good for you, but Victorian Era Britain is a bad comparison because we now have refrigeration, better storage containers, better farm health practices… I’m sure raw milk now and raw milk 100 years ago is different simply because of how it’s stored. I still wouldn’t drink it.

He was designed by a Japanese game designer but the character is canonically an Italian plumber. In the beginning Mario and Luigi were from New York then later they were taken to The Mushroom Kingdom. They always were designed to be Italian characters though, hence why they went for very typical sounding Italian names.
