50 Amusing Pics That Show Different Countries Around The World Have Their Own Kinds Of “Pigeons”
In some cities, no matter how big or small, it seems like the population of pigeons is equal in size to the population of citizens; if not bigger. In such cities, they tend to have a favored spot, too—like a large square or a park, where, if the winged creatures are lucky enough, there might even be a person feeding them the crumbs of their pastry.
But it’s not always pigeons that are happy to be in close proximity with humans. In some places, other animals act just like pigeons do, be it other birds, cats, or even moose. These are just a few examples of ‘pigeons’ from different places in the world, but if you’re curious to see more, scroll down to view them on the list below.
In order to learn more about pigeons, Bored Panda got in touch with two experts, Professor at the Department of Natural Resources Science at the University of Rhode Island, Peter Paton, and Professor at the Department of Biology at Queen's University, Robert Montgomerie. You will find both of their thoughts in the text below.

Family Of Raccoons In My Yard
We have a family that sat out on our deck all summer eating bird seed. With our deck lights on the railings, it looked like a social club for trash pandas.
snake, not vicious at all, just defensive when necessary. And always cute.

Load More Replies...Racoons are so cute but they make the creepiest noises. So many nights I would here them chattering and talking to each other outside my bedroom window and it sounds like possessed toddlers screaming and screeching and crying. Totally freaked me out the first couple of times. They were always fighting over trashcans on garbage day or picking oranges off our trees

Yes and no. They can become dependent on food from humans and then suffer when that human leaves or dies.
Load More Replies...Once she runs out of sunflower seeds, those squirrels are going to skeletonize her in less than 30 seconds!😜
The squirrels at the prison I was in are tame enough to sit with people. One of the vegetarian subs was peanut butter, and they'd give little prepackaged cups. I was outside one day, and someone had opened a peanut butter cup and given it to Chip the squirrel. He held the cup between his front paws, and ate the peanut butter out of it. Sometimes people gave them fireballs, a hard jawbreaker that's very hot on the outside, but is sweet on the inside. The squirrels would lick the hot off, stopping now and then to make a face. The worst I ever gave them was cereal or popcorn. As cute as they were, eating fireballs, they didn't actually like them, and all they are is hard corn syrup with red dye and cinnamon.
While I don’t endorse the feeding, I’m SO glad you got a little animal companionship while you were incarcerated.
Load More Replies...In quite a few cities, a square covered in pigeons is far less surprising than an empty one. Take Milan, for instance; expecting to see at least a few of them in Piazza del Duomo is a pretty safe bet. The same goes for St. Mark's Square in Venice, where the situation got so bad, pigeon feeding had to be officially banned, to the great sadness of the birdseed vendors in the square.
“It’s a tradition,” one of them told The New York Times, “It’s like removing Rialto or The Bridge of Sighs”—two of the main attraction points in Venice for both tourists, and, likely, pigeons.
But what, apart from the obvious—birdseed—led flocks of these googly-eyed birds into the cities in the first place?

Bored Panda turned to the evolutionary biologist Robert Montgomerie to discuss the reasons some animals, including different species of birds—among which, of course, pigeons—ended up living alongside people in cities. The expert pointed out four main factors, one of them being warmth, as the cities are warmer due to concrete and asphalt, among other things.
“There are also fewer predators,” the expert continued, adding that it applies when it comes to big predators, as the cities are now full of the smaller ones, such as foxes, falcons, and raccoons.
The third reason is nest sites. “Pigeons, swallows, falcons, house sparrows, starlings and some other species all nest on buildings, which are much more plentiful than their natural sites on cliffs and tree hollows,” he explained.
Last but not least, there’s food, which they can get either by feeding at bird feeders and people’s hands, garbage, insects in gardens, or scraps that people discard while eating outside. “I once watched ibises (bin chickens) snatch sandwiches from unsuspecting picnickers in Sydney, Australia,” the expert recalled. “Clearly this was easier pickings than hunting for unsuspecting frogs in marshes.”

They can smell them in pockets and purses and will not hesitate to try to separate you from them!
Load More Replies...You'd think that until they start poking you with the antlers. Those things are not very nice :)
Load More Replies...This reminds me of my hometown. Deer are everywhere and don't care about you or where you may need to go. I lost count of the times when a small herd of 10-15 deer would be just chilling in my driveway in the early morning and hey would absolutely not move for me to head out to work. You could honk, try to slowly drive towards them, get out and try to "sho them" and they would just stare at you a bit before getting back to whatever it was they were doing
I visited the park there, with the huge buddha in the pagoda...it was beautiful, and there were these sweet, elderly ladies selling cookie packages wrapped in cellophane, and I thought, hey, let's buy some for the deer. I didn't realize that those sweet, elderly ladies carried really really big sticks for a reason. So when I was too slow taking off the cellophane wrap...about half-a-dozen deer mobbed me, with one starting to eat the tourist guide map out of my hand. I bought a raku-wear sake set from a roadside vendor, to commemorate getting mugged by sacred deer in Nara park....
Interesting! We have tons of deer where I live but for the most part they run away if you approach them. Except for the cheeky doe who likes to upend our birdfeeder and eat all the poor birds' seeds. :) She's not afraid of us for some reason.
Another reason why some birds might end up in cities, according to Professor Peter Paton, is their resemblance to the natural environment the winged creatures are used to. “Pigeons are native to cliffs, so possibly city buildings mimic their native habitat,” he pointed out. “They were slowly domesticated over time and evolved a commensal relationship with humans, so ended up in cities.”
The expert added that they are arguably easier to domesticate than other birds, which is why they are adapted to living with humans more so than most other species.

Even though pigeons seem to have adapted to the city lifestyle quite well, certain instincts affect their habits even in the concrete jungle. For instance, the fact that they tend to move around in flocks.
“It’s about safety in numbers. An anti-predator strategy,” Paton said. “Pigeons are common prey to raptors, such as falcons, and when you are in a large flock, it is easier to evade predators, as more eyes are watching out for them. Also, in a large flock, it’s more likely that a neighbor will be eaten rather than you.”

Australia's OK. Just make sure you come after January. That's when we sacrifice some tourists to the wild animals, so they won't kill any more for the rest of the year.
I am really amazed finding so many birds even in urban Australia. It is something that one cannot see in the Philippines after almost all the forest had been logged. Most endemic and indigenous birds in the Philippines are forest birds. There are some special spots though that have been saved from logging.
This is my balcony for much of the year, they are an interesting bird...they are bullies as mentioned in a previous comment...they also do the pair thing which is so cute, but if one set has landed and are eating another set will land and push them out of the way, but they take it often not fighting back, it seems to be a proper hierarchy. They are also incredibly easy to train...they used to go to our kitchen window and tap on the glass every morning and I was able to communicate to them somehow to fly to the other side of the building and access food via the balcony and they completely stopped the kitchen routine they had followed for years.
Wow, I'd love to sit out with my morning coffee watching these guys! We get a lot of sparrows and the odd red cardinals and blue jays, but nothing like this!

Wild Horses In My Neighbor's Yard This Morning (NV)
Those horses look very nice for wild. Well fed, shiny coats. The one in the center back looks like it might be gravid. I'm sort of jazzed to see wild horses looking so good. Most photos I have seen were more scraggly looking and sometimes you could see ribs because they were very skinny.
I might have to call shenanigans on this one. Those horses look way too groomed to be wild. Likewise none of that vegetation around that house, including the grass, is native to Nevada. That of course doesn’t mean that someone couldn’t have planted that non-native fauna. But too many red flags here

When I was little my grandfather took us up a mountain somewhere in Arizona or Nevada. Looong time ago. I'm ancient.
But with all sorts of species charting human-filled territories, is it likely that animals are becoming less and less fearful? Prof. Montgomerie does not think that’s the case; not in the natural world, at least. “This may be true of animals in cities but in the countryside, animals and birds seem to be most wary where they have regular contact with humans and are tamest on remote islands and in the arctic where humans are relatively scarce.”

Load More Replies...Even though not to the same extent as the Arctic, Alaska is another place where people are relatively scarce; but ‘pigeons’ are not. Except ‘pigeons’ in Alaska are not the same as those roaming the streets in Italy.
As quite a few pictures on this list show, an eagle is the bird that can be as commonly seen in Alaska as pigeons are elsewhere. As a matter of fact, the bald eagle population there is reportedly greater than in all of the lower 48 states combined, according to the Forest Service. The birds seemingly thrive there not only because of fewer people, but also because of the condition of their natural habitat and abundance of food.
That’s why if Home Alone 2 was set in Alaska, the kind-hearted Pigeon Lady would likely be feeding a very different kind of bird. (And have a different moniker, too.)
My Wife Had Been Feeding The Very Friendly Squirrel That Lives In Our Tree This Summer. Tonight She Brought Her Kids Out To Meet Us
I used to feed wild squirrels. I don’t want to be a downer for anyone, but now I strongly recommend against it. It started when I saw a one-eyed squirrel looking for food around the bottom of the bird feeder. I felt bad for her and started to give her nuts. Fast forward to the winter months and at peak feeding time, I’d have 20+ squirrels on the deck. Unfortunately, while cute, they are still wild creatures, and things got ugly fast. Once dependent on the food, they’d chew through the screen doors to try to get into the house. They stashed nuts in the area between our deck stairs and the railing, separating the railing, causing us to have to have the deck stairs re-built. In groups, they were aggressive towards each other and other smaller animals, like red squirrels and chipmunks - and birds, of course. I had decided to stop feeding them, and then the daily visits from coyotes started. That sealed the deal. I learned my lesson about disturbing the balance of nature.

Same in the Cíes Islands off the north coast in Spain. It's a protected area and there are soooo many. They have learnt to open rucksacks and they'll eat everything you have. THIS. Underrated and overhated. They deserve better.
Load More Replies...LOL. Best believe they are poisonous anyway. They eat rosary peas- highly toxic to humans and most animals. So the birds have some of the poison in/ on them which is fatal :D
Load More Replies...Although called "common bronzewing", there are many other pigeons in Australia that are more common. Particularly the spotted turtledove, an immigrant originally from South East Asia.
Even though in some cities it feels like there are more pigeons than people, they are not the most populous species of bird out there; they succumb in number to their distant relative, the chicken. It is believed that the pigeon and chicken lineages diverged more than 85 million years ago, which led to the former becoming the most abundant bird worldwide, with a population reaching 30 billion. The pigeon—well, its cousin, the dove, to be exact—is third on the list with a population of 475 million.

This is actually a tea interesting debate: why has Australia done almost nothing for road crossing safety for animals? I’ve lived in Europe and we have large boards or highway crossings designed to filter animals across the highways safely. Kangaroos cannot jump those boards, however the only prevention mechanism I’ve seen in Victoria are wire fences about 1 meter high, perfect for juvenile kangaroos to get their feet stuck in when trying to vault it.

I was at the Griffith campus at Southbank about 2 months ago, it wasn't quite swooping season yet but there were plenty of magpies around - two kept walking up to me and trying to steal my lunch!
Load More Replies...Nothin better than to hear the maggie's morning madrigals. I hand feed them each morning where I live. Did you know they are listed as one of the ten most dangerous birds in the world? Some misguided moron who was obviously warned off during breeding season. Maggies rool, OK?
They can become very tame and eat from your hand or sit on your head / shoulder, etc. I used to feed about 24 of them in my backyard, but they poop everywhere !
Deer In Nara, Japan. They Will Bow For Cookies. But Beware, Once You Feed Them, They Will Follow You For More, And You May Get Headbutted
Important lesson for any tourist. Don't. Feed. The. Wildlife. Sometimes deer, moose, elk, etc will get fed by one human, then when another human doesn't give them food, they attack. Seriously. An Arizona woman was feeding elk on the reg, then when she didn't have food, they killed her. Just a few days ago. Also happened here in Canada with some moose and deer
These don't really count as wildlife, though... They have been spoiled by humans for generations.
Load More Replies...Guess I spent too much time rehabilitating wild animals, because I avoid them unless they're in need. Why? Because they're freaking wild animals.
I kept well away when we visited, didn’t even touch the deer crackers my husband bought, and they came up and bit me on the backside! They know that people keep food in their back pockets.
Hopefully a recipe that is healthy for them, and not human cookies.

The Harbor Town Of Unalaska Is Home To Over 600 Eagles, Making Them As Common As Pigeons In Most Other Cities
Unfortunately, this isn't as magical as it sounds. The eagles are constantly fighting over fish guts and attacking people. Nesting season is especially hellish.
I think that any of the posts on this page could turn into a bit of an issue if the animals in question were persistent, unafraid of humans, and just wanted to get food. Most of them are not domesticated animals and so don't have a relationship with humans baked into their DNA, and even the ones that have descended from domesticated animals if they haven't been handled for several generations could end up destructive or dangerous. Small doses would seem ideal, rather than having to live with it.
It simply Shows Humans that Animals of every Kind are Far Smarter than Humans will ever Be!! They Have been Watching Humans Since Our Beginnings!!
Animals don't capitalize words in the middle of sentences: that surely proves your point.
Load More Replies...Yeah cant imagine that having a predator fight over food be a good time. Those claws are no joke. Slice right through skin and muscles. I'm sure you would take skyrats any day over that.
I live on a harbor that is home to several species of sea gulls, which can be pretty aggressive. But they're not nearly as dangerous as eagles. I'll stick with the gulls and pigeons.
Dutch Harbor/Unalaska it a beautiful hellhole. Huge fishing port and nothing else. Lots of these dumpster chickens fighting over whatever fish bits they can find. Since they are protected, they can't be harassed. Several times, I've seen pallets of packaged seafood destroyed because it was parked on a dock. Eagle lands on it, realizes it's food and starts tearing into it. Others come over and it's a mess. Nothing you can do but watch. Another problem created by humans. I miss Alaska but not the fishing industry.
Chicken Heaven In Kauai, Hawaii
These guys get aggressive, too. Jumped right on our table at an outdoor restaurant and started eating off all the plates. Couldn't shoo them off.
Chickens are amazing while tamed, but these guys are feral, not afraid to use violence, I suggest getting something to block them from coming at you

Load More Replies...God this is so disturbing people think it's wonderful it is far from wonderful. those female kittens will start having kittens at 6months old 2 litters a yr up to 9 kittens each. And so on and so. Those animals will most likely die a horrible death by car, by human, starvation, illness, weather heat/snow being eaten by a larger predator. It is sad and cruel. And it will be a never ending cycle for those street cats that No one gives a f**k about .
Don't hate the cats help them by sterilize them and let them live out their lives. If a new one shows up try the sterilize release because people are asses and dump pets.
Wild Chickens Are Everywhere In Kauai. They Were Already Around Even When We Just Landed In The Airport
Legend has it that these chickens became the “pigeons” of Kauai after Hurricane Iniki in 1992 destroyed all chicken enclosures, releasing them all into the jungle. So now they’re literally everywhere, roaming the streets, shopping centers, restaurants, etc.
Not edible ones. If there was a way to keep the roosters away from the hens then wild eggs would be awesome but if we do find them, which isn't as common as you'd think, we assume they are fertilized.
Load More Replies...Did anyone else see the tree shrub in back ground? Or maybe iguana?
Nope! Lol. Really wreaks havoc. The government works at catching them here on Oahu but it's not as easy as it seems for various reasons. We don't have nearly as many as Kauai though.

Domestic animals need humans so people need to fix it. Who knows what it is doing to natural wildlife.
Wild Deers Freely Roaming The Streets Of Nara, Japan

Load More Replies...It's tradition there. Deer are sacred in Nara. But to feed them, you need to buy the official cookies which are presumably not harmful. They are sold on the streets. Huge business in Nara.

Today, however, it focuses on larger animals such as wild boars and deer, which are causing damage to crops. So Once the Deer are in Towns there is No Hunting Allowed!
Oh, good. It's not just white people who approach wild animals and feed them.
Iguanas On Exuma Beach In Nassau, Bahamas
Not the Bahamas but St. Thomas. Watched the staff trying to kick 1+m long guana from the drugstore. Also, there I heard the most iconic airplane announcement: "Dear passengers, we apologize for the delay, but we had to clear the runway from Iguanas"
Every now and again there's an article about green iguanas taking over S. Florida and causing a lot of damage. Every late Fall, Florida puts out warnings to watch for frozen iguanas falling out of trees.

Absolutely. Not as loud individually as the sulphur crested cockatoo but the noise from large flocks can be deafening. In some Australian towns, people are forced to move out when the corellas move it.

On January 1st Of This Year, I Photographed A Rather Bold Australian White Ibis In Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
When I was younger, people were calling crows/ravens bin chickens. Not sure if that was just a local thing or not, but now it's always ibis.
Load More Replies...Although these bin chickens are much maligned, they don't go out of their way to steal food from people, the people go after them to feed them and take selfies. I may be wrong, but I think the bin chicken is found in the city centres of all Australian cities.
Could be wrong but I don't think I've seen them in Tassie, they are definitely not common here.

How Did Palos Verdes Become Home To So Many Peacocks?
Legend has it that Frank Vanderlip, the "founding father of Palos Verdes" received them as a gift from the Wrigley family, the chewing gum tycoons. Others claim he received them from fellow real estate magnate Elias Baldwin, who loved to display his wealth and bought 50 peacocks from India. Whatever the case, peacocks are a common site in many Palos Verdes neighborhoods still today.
Baldwin’s Ranch in Arcadia, CA is the land that became the Arboretum. His ranch house is still there. All I’m seeing in these pictures are the male peacocks but no peahens, who don’t have the flashy plumage. Maybe these are all peacocks seeking peahens?
Good point, when I lived there I would see lots of peacocks but not peahens. Maybe the latter were not as noticeable.

yes but bats live in colonies. Undisturbed colonies of flying foxes could be in the hundreds of thousands, how much more of the insectivorous, microbats?

IKR? Since they're a protected species in the UK, I wonder if there's legislation that addresses dying them? Their evolution of feather color is a form of camouflage to avoid predation. An RSPCA spokesperson told the Bristol Post that dyeing a bird is “cruel and unnecessary,” and could cause allergic reactions.
