Depending on where you live, you might be a massive fan of your government or feel extremely disappointed in and overlooked by every politician your nation has.

As frustrating as keeping up with the news can be, it can also be refreshing to hear a reminder every once in a while that some governments actually do care about their citizens. And this list is full of beautiful examples!

Bored Panda has scoured the internet to find the most creative, innovative, and thoughtful ways countries worldwide are taking care of their residents.

From providing free sunscreen on the beach to giving care packages to pregnant moms, we hope you enjoy scrolling through these photos that should restore a bit of your faith in humanity (or encourage you to move to another country).

And keep reading to find a conversation with King Siu about travel, eating, and drinking!

Finland's Maternity Box - The Box Every Pregnant Woman In Finland Gets. Mine Came Today So I Thought I'd Show You All What I Got

Cardboard box with baby essentials, showcasing how countries care for citizens.

We picked up the box from the post office, and even Simba was excited.
There is a snow suit, hat, mittens, and another warm body suit. Sleeping bag and sheet. Hats, balaclava, pads, socks, tights, and the small bag has a little book, a toy, condoms, and some other small baby hygiene products.
There's a cloth diaper, and a towel, but the rest is almost all clothing in various styles and forms, all gender-neutral. The bottom of the box is also a mattress, so the baby is able to use it as a bed at the beginning of her life. All of the clothes are very high quality, and a good chunk of what came in the box was made in Finland or by Finnish companies.

Scotland has these too, we copied it from Finland. Ours have a lot more in them than what's pictured here and things for the mum as well as baby. Every pregnant person can get one through their midwife and it's completely free. (There are videos on YouTube showing people opening them and showing whats inside for anyone who's interested.)

What I love about the Scottish version (and as it seems, Finland is the same): if you want a box, you just let your midwife know. Don't need one? Don't ask. Are you rich but would like one? Here you go! Because our government said: we welcome EVERY child born in Scotland.

Anyone wanna sponsor a poor, disabled American woman so she can move to Scotland? (Seriously - I visited in 1997 and when I stepped out of the train station in Edinburgh, I felt like I'd come home.) 😁

The inclusion of the condoms is brilliant an hilarious at the same time. "Here's everything you need to start off with your new baby.....and something else to avoid having any more". Helping out new parents and encouraging population control. You Nordics are my heroes.

Holy ****. This comment section is horrific. A person isn't going to transition so they can perv on someone in the toilet! Seriously think about it for five seconds! Why on Earth would they subject themselves to all the social stigma and discrimination if that was their goal? On the flip side, a r*pist isn't going to care which facilities their victim is in; if they're already set on violating someone's personhood, a little sign on the door isn't much of an obstacle.

There are “manly” looking women. And there are feminine looking men. And with advances in medicine, a lot of trans people are looking more like their chosen gender and many pass- particularly trans men with their muscles and facial hair. Short of genital checks, bathroom policing just doesn’t work. No one is going to change their gender, eff up their entire life, alienate most of their friends and family, attempt to legally change their gender and become one of the most vilified demographics in the world today, just to get frisky with you in a public bathroom (ew, btw.) Stop flattering yourself thinking you’re that dang special.

I've seen some sketchy men follow women into the women's washroom. I've told an old man to get out. However, I do work with trans people, and they will not enter a gender specific washroom. They will use a one room, family washroom they can have complete privacy. Their basis is they just don't want to cause any issues or risk being humiliated.

And every public washroom should be just that. A private room with a toilet and sink and a door that goes fully top to bottom, all arranged in a row in a hallway. No one then has access to anyone else and anyone of any gender can use any water closet/toilet room.

To the two people who commented about taxes: AND? What's your point? Yes, their taxes fund healthcare. Which means they ACTUALLY get some benefit from paying taxes. I don't know about either of you, but I've been paying taxes in the US all my life, and rarely see any benefit from it. But hey, at least our tax money is subsidizing Musk's companies and a bloated military, right? At least we have that. 🙄

People who complain about taxes are actually the ones who want "free stuff". Taxes paying for making the life of all better / easier is exactly how society should function. But greedy and selfish people are whining that they can't just take, take take.

To learn more about this topic, we got in touch with world traveler King Siu of Travel, Eat, Drink. He was kind enough to have a chat with Bored Panda and reveal some of the best things he's noticed countries providing for their residents along his travels.

"I feel most people know that college is free, or almost free in Europe. But what I was surprised to find out from some Norwegian friends was that they received an allowance from the government while they were studying!" King shared. "And this wasn't just a few bucks to help with groceries, this was enough for them to get an apartment and live."

"I'm sure Norway isn't the only country to do this, but boy did I want to be Norwegian when I found that out," the traveler continued. "It would definitely be nice for all students to be able to concentrate on their studies and not have the distraction of how one is going to pay for it."

Looking at trees is the best view. We had beautiful row of trees outside our house, provided shade and privacy, birds singing all day. Then a storm took them down. Everybody was telling me how amazing that the trees are gone because now we have “view” of the ocean. Boring blueish grey mass, I was sad every time I looked out of the window. We don’t live there anymore, hope the trees are allowed to grow back.

Tree Law mandates a hefty fine based on the age of the tree(s) removed and the replacement of the tree(s) with like aged same species trees. Some vandals have had to pay multiple millions for their vandalism. This is American Tree Law and breaking a TPO in the UK (which can have unlimited fines).

I wish we did this in New Zealand as well. Basically, cutting down a non-protected tree has mimimal consequences. The result is that people cut down trees with the expectation of a fine, and knowledge that the tree blocking their view ain't coming back in a hurry. With the average house costing $700,000 a $1,000 fine is worth it.

LOL If someone is in the crosswalk - if they are moving away from your side, you can go when they are more than half way across. As in, they are into the other lane. If moving towards your side, you have to wait until they are out of the crosswalk. In either case, the status of the crosswalk lights (or even no lights) is irrelevant.

King noted that, as a Canadian, universal healthcare was just something he grew up with. But he really began to appreciate it after spending time in countries that didn't have it. "In particular, the United States," he says. "How does the richest country in the world, who actually spends more per capita on healthcare than Canada, not provide basic medical care to all of its citizens? I don't think any Canadian will ever understand that."

"Even my friends who have incredible health insurance in the U.S. tell me that they never leave a doctor's office without paying something," King continued. "But, the reality really hits when I see the never-ending GoFundMe campaigns to help someone who is battling a serious illness. One should not have to worry about going bankrupt from medical bills when they are fighting cancer."

"The Canadian healthcare system is far from perfect, but I like that I never have to think twice about going to see a doctor if I feel sick," he added. "I am amused that an American would be shocked if they weren't handed a bill at the end of their medical appointment, and a Canadian would be shocked if they received one."

70 cents might not seem a lot but I promise you, for some people it is, particularly if you have a bladder problem and have to go frequently. Most paid public toilets also don't accept cards, so what if you haven't got any cash? Access to a toilet ought to be a basic human right.

Some places in Canada make you purchase something before you using the washrooms, unless you find a compassionate employee who understands you absolutely cannot wait any longer, or find a big box store. At least I'm finding more one room or more private stalls. However, the malls and big box stores tend to have such big gaps it doesn't take much effort to see someone sitting on the toilet and make out their identity.

Stockholm is a beautiful city where people are very accepting of others regardless of their sexuality, no one cares, because it's not their business. They're pretty tolerant. I believe in the paradox of intolerance; in order to have a tolerant society you must be intolerant to hate.

It's not a paradox, even; tolerance is a social contract. If you choose to be intolerant of others, you are choosing to violate that contract and thus are no longer covered by it.

"On a lighter note, you may have heard about some countries that offer money for couples to have children," King shared. "But in Busan, South Korea, they are going right to the beginning and are offering cash incentives for couples to date, and the further along their relationship gets, the more money they receive."

"I guess it's like a game show, so it's probably just a matter of time before Mr. Beast starts doing a version of Beast Games for relationships," the travel expert says. "On top of the money they will receive for finally getting married, the government also provides money for a down payment on a house or rent for five years. Korea has a really low birthrate, so this is just one of the creative ways to get the country's mojo going again. I believe they're opening this program up to foreigners soon, so start packing your bags if you've always dreamed of living out your own K-Drama."

We need senior playgrounds. There is no where safe for mobility challenged older adults to get exercise and "play". Lack of play and lack of exercise make one age even faster. I've seen photos of senior playgrounds, somewhere in Europe and I think they're brilliant. They should be everywhere. (and you don't have to be over 55 to be allowed to play there).

King has also observed that, generally, Scandinavian countries take care of their citizens the best overall. "Yes, they also pay really high taxes for these privileges, but every survey about happiness always has their citizens in the top 10 in the world, so there's that," he shared.

"It's not just that they provide things for their citizens, but the services provided make sense. For example, if you want people to have babies, taking the medical expenses out is a good first step, and money to help with the additional expenses of having a child are another," King explained. "Providing parental leave makes sense as a newborn is a lot of work, (leave is typically super generous in Scandinavia too, like over a year generous) and of course, someone has to look after the kid, so affordable childcare is also available."

Next, we asked King which benefits other countries have that he'd like to see Canada implement. "The living allowance for college students that they do in Norway would be a great thing to see in Canada, and the relationship subsidy in South Korea would be interesting to see implemented in Canada since we also face a declining birthrate," he told Bored Panda. "And the skyrocketing real estate costs have made home ownership impossible for many."

A random person on a beach in New Jersey saved me from being stung by a jellyfish. I was zoned out, looked at the ocean, and someone shoved me. I looked around angrily, and the guy pointed down. At a jellyfish, right where I'd been standing. I thanked him profusely. This was in the early 1980s.

Two of my colleges offered food like that in the USA, one in New York and one in Vermont. The state of Vermont has an incredible farm to table system. They make some of the finest cheeses in the US and their veg/meat/beer is top notch. Heavily supported by the state, residents, and visitors (like me!).

As for why it's so important for countries to take good care of their citizens, the travel expert shared, "A country thrives when its citizens are happy, plain and simple. I'm not saying that they all wake up every morning full of sunshine and unicorns, but the fewer basic necessities that one has to worry about the better your quality of life, and the less angry one is at the government."

"Most who go into public office have a desire to help people, so making their citizens' lives easier should be their top priority," King added. "However, it can also support their other top priority of winning reelection, which I'm sure can motivate every politician regardless of their reason for entering politics."

A fine, usually somewhere between $20 & $180. The amount depends on whether it's a Council, State Govt or Federal Govt election & whether you've been issued & not responded to a penalty notice. Refusal to pay can result in seizure of goods &/or jail time but I suspect the latter options rarely happen

I can only imagine what the helicopter crew who was brought to Flint, for the ride to Ann Arbor Mich for my grandson's ambulance ride costs. Why you ask? By the time he arrived at CS Mott (U of M) his heart capacity was at 15%. He will make a recovery from Covid> StrepA> Sepsis.

And for those who want to know: an ambulance ride in Germany costs around EUR 3,600 I was charged once because my partner, in his shock over me needing one, gave his health insurance's name instead of mine, so the hospital sent me the bill. Of course, all I had to do was to forward it to my own insurer and yes, I paid EUR 10, too, that's all.

I don't know how much 3,600 EUR is compared to Cdn dollars, but the only time I've had to use an ambulance in BC was admittedly a couple of decades ago, but it cost me 57 dollars. That's it. Every other part of the emergency department visit was fully covered. I had only to pay a modest fee for the ambulance ride. Yay Canada!

when I couldn't even get off the sofa, my husband called an ambulance, after calling the doctor, and being advised to. (I'm normally, despite my aches and pains, reasonably able bodied) one week stay, three decent meals a day, daily blood tests, constantly on a drip, chest x ray, heart and kidney ultrasounds, etc etc. lovely staff. comfortable bed in a peaceful small ward room. (4 people) the only cost was the car park when my family came to collect me when I was discharged. also UK. they were brilliant, and I was very well looked after.

I worked for an ambulance service in the greater Seattle area. We pay taxes for Medic One, which is coordinated through a fire station. If you are having a heart attack or close to death, they take you, no fee. Anything else, a private ambulance company is called, and your health insurance might not cover the fees. You get charged for the ride to the closest hospital per mile of travel. You get charged for each medicine given. You get charged for the sheet you lie on, and the blanket put on you, and these are disposable items but given premium charges. And if you get transported via medical airlift aka helicopter, you get charged for transfer into the helicopter, for taking you out when they arrive at the hospital, even if the ambulance ride is Medic One / free. On top of hospital bills not covered by your health insurance, you can easily rack up thousands of dollars in a bill from a private ambulance. So if you can, get a taxi to the hospital

Paying $27.50 for using a TV for 4 days (with no charge for the healthcare received) or getting to watch all the TV you want for 4 days, completely free, but paying a hospital bill where you're charged $100 per aspirin and $30 per facial tissue used, never mind the thousands of dollars for whatever treatment you received?

Speaking of prisons, if you haven't seen the abysmal conditions of the prison where Trump is sending alleged gang members in El Salvador, check out some of the videos on YouTube. It's horrifying, even if the men there were all violent criminals. We need to treat human beings better than that. Remember the 8th Amendment to the US Constitution, which prohibits "cruel and unusual punishment". Unfortunately, a lot of people in this country don't seem to care -- and many call themselves Christians. Jesus Christ would never stand for that kind of treatment of any human being.

This looks nicer and cleaner than the NHS room I had after my surgery last year. In fact I'd been in the room a week prior for pre surgery tests and start intravenous antibiotics. During the 4 days I had multiple blood tests, one of which squirted blood up the walls, on the window and on the curtain. After 5 days at home I returned for surgery and happened to get the same room. The blood stained curtains were still up & the window also still had the blood. What's worse is someone else stayed in that room in-between my visits.

Looks like a wide angle lens is distorting the room size (it looks bigger). I was in a similar birthing suite — yes! here in the US! — but the colors were much warmer. And it had a lovely view of the courtyard.

My local hospital has just opened four new birthing suites with water pools, subtle lighting and all manner of comfort related kit. They are extending the maternity ward to build another four. It used to be a production line for babies, now it starts with Mum’s needs and goes from there.

Technology! Phew! What if there's a power outage. What if the LED burn out or a circuit breaker engages? What's wrong with a sign built into the lock that says 'occupied' or 'vacant', like on a plane? But these doors are cute, and cost the city (and the taxpayer) triple what a simpler door would cost.

That's not the prison he's in, it's the prison he wanted to be transferred to. He's being detained in Ringerike prison, and he complained because he spent 12 years in isolation (he got sentenced for 21 years which is the max sentence they can give in Norway) but the complaint was rejected since he still has access to a training room, kitchen, TV room and a bathroom, despite being in isolation. For what he did i think he doesn't deserve any of these comforts or to ever get out of prison, but the Norwegian model is currently one of the best in the world when it comes to reintegration of criminals in civil society, so i guess they know better.

    Joe Reaves
    Community Member
9 months ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Not to mention the reason he's in isolation is he still wants to convert other people to his opinions. If your aim is to radicalise others and convince them to commit acts of violence, you don't get to interact with other people.

Norway is such a trailblazer in terms of treating criminals. Much less "revenge" and more "reintegration". Plus, not turning them into slaves. To the surprise of no one, but to the chagrin of right wingers, they have lots of success with it.

Norway has eliminated both death penalty and life sentences (the maximum sentence is 21 years which is what they gave to Breivik). They concetrate all efforts in making criminals functioning members of society again and so far they are excelling in this area.

I let my kid choose a healthy cereal, and a sweet cereal when the other one was done. Then got her to choose a healthy one again. It went like that for a bit. Eventually she just made up her own mind that she preferred the healthier cereals because the sugary ones scratched up the roof of her mouth and hurt her teeth. In this photo we can see that not all sugary cereals have mascots, so it's up to the parents to teach their kids and make their own decisions.

I was recently reading an article about this, and it pointed out that Canadian agriculture laws protect small farms and make enormous factory farms less lucrative than they are in the US. So when a Canadian laying flock has a bird turn up positive for bird flu, they may be killing only a few hundred thousand birds, whereas in the US, they have to kïll millions of birds. That makes a big difference to supply. That and price gouging is still legal in the US, of course. Edit: Interesting how BP's Censorship Gone Wild triggers on "kïll" but not "killing".

Blame the farming industry, for having too many chickens and contaminated facilities. There is no oversight on these industrialized systems, and they also contaminate smaller ones. No whistleblowers, because the "laws" protect the conglomerates that seek to destroy the competition by causing this, then rebound with their "Frankenchicken" factories, just like the seeding industry.

Usually you just go to the polling station and get your name ticked off and walk out ( or as is traditional, you draw a cöck and bälls on the ballot paper and lodge that!!) or you make an excuse or pay the $20 fine. Or on your 18th birthday you don't enrol to vote. We're perfectly happy that everyone votes, at least everyone participates in the democratic process. Compulsory voting just means everyone has to get off their ärses and make an effort. And buy a democracy sausage from the charity sausage sizzle. Yum!!

When voting rates of registered voters is regularly at 35%, there's ideas put out to increase voting. In my state, we have mail-in voting, it was started to increase voting. Making voting mandatory with a small fine is a great idea, it seems to work in other places. Getting registered voters to vote is part of the problem, getting people to register to vote and keep voting information up-to-date is another part.

I used to live near an egg farm when I was a teenager. They had an outer room with a couple glass door fridges and eggs in 12 packs and 30 pack trays. 10 cents a egg dropped into an honest John coffee can system. It was pretty great cause we were poor af and us kids had to pay for our own food. I lived off mushroom, green onion, and cheese omelets basically from 14 to 18. Still love them

What am I looking at? The light green arrows or the dark green arrows? Is it just me or is the right car opposite the other two?

The arrows just mean it could go either way but you know by the road markings which way it's going like with trains
