Children may be ruthless sometimes and will tell you the truth without sugarcoating it. That is why parents try and teach their little ones that it's not very nice to say some things even if they are true. But when parents forbid their kids from saying certain words, then children turn on their incredibly creative minds and gift the adults with some gems.
Twitter user @AlixEHarrow shared that she doesn't let her 4-year-old say the word 'gross' at the dinner table and that resulted in the child inventing new phrases to say the same thing.

Apparently, forbidding words is a common thing between parents and children who then have to find ways to express themselves using different words. Parents shared the genius phrases their kids have come up with and it's a thread that will give you a good laugh.

A friend's husband used to say to her, that was a delicious meal, thank you honey, let's not have it again.
Both my kids thank me anytime I give them food. It's really sweet. And especially adorable when my 3-year-old does it. "Hank oo, Mommy!" with so much enthusiasm. Sometimes followed up with a thumbs up and a "good job, Mommy!"
My 6yo whether she likes it or not she gets all jumpy and says "its soooo good" but then follows it with "but I don't really want it right now" if she doesnt like it. She really doesn't want to hurt my feelings. It makes it hard to force her to when shes trying so hard to spare my feelings.
Alix E. Harrow is a full-time writer who lives in Kentucky. She is the author of the novels The Ten Thousand Doors Of January and The Once And Future Witches and she is now working on another one.
She is also a mother to two little children and from time to time shares the unexpected things her children say. One of her tweets went quite viral with 229k likes and in it, the author described how her 4-year-old wanted to express that he didn’t like the food he was eating and found even better ways to describe the feeling.
Raw or slightly steamed broccoli tastes like sunshine and happiness, and the right kind of apple tastes like natural candy.
Load More Replies...^^ this; the only apple variety that needs to be banned is red delicious.

Kids are never wrong in using knowledge and interpretation within their own language.
A-ha! It was Mr Potatohead, on the plate, in the kitchen!
Load More Replies...There is no harm. This is a child who is building a creative vocabulary and learning to express themself in a mature manner.
That is actually a very polite way of expressing a food dislike! I would rather hear that than having the kid say something is disgusting or horrible.
I would appreciate co-workers being as polite about my lunch choices.
Load More Replies...My middle grandson when he was little told his mom that the meal was good, but if he would prefer she not make it again. He also told his mom one day when the gluten free muffins where baked and she passed them around and said 'something is missing" he replied 'it's the gluten mom that's what is missing.'
We've never told my daughter to nor say things are gross but that's how she always has done it
My son does this too - " This is really nice, but please let's not have it again ....."
That's not what they taught their daughter at all, they just taught her a different way of expressing her dislike so it wouldn't affect the younger child. Not your family, not your call to judge them.
Load More Replies...People in the thread loved the phrases Alix E. Harrow’s kid invented, especially the one saying "this tastes.......unlucky to me." They were saying that they will start using the expression as well.
Others started sharing their own children’s sayings when they don’t like what they are eating and this resulted in a very fun thread that would make anyone’s day brighter.
My brother likes those Eggo microwave pancakes, and when he went to get some actual pancakes from an actual restaurant, he was barely able to finish them. I tried them, they were delicious.

Right? That’s the best description of sparkling water that I’ve ever seen.
Load More Replies...Kinda weird from a child of this generation. But having grown up with the old cathode-ray box TVs, and having licked the screen more than once (don't ask, I was young) I can confirm the glass screen was brimming with static!! So she may be on to something.
Or the daughter has synesthesia, where senses get mixed in the brain, and you can taste visuals, see shapes from music, and words have colors associated with them.
True! I remember when I was little i'd describe things that way... telling someone "Your name is red and light yellow" or saying "This music feels kinda bumpy". Before we got our dog my parents were trying to think of names for it and my younger sister suggested Archie- but I quickly shot that down because that name was "too pointy" XD
Load More Replies...I remember hosting some Scottish girl guides when I was a kid (Canadian) and they thought everything was “too spicy” - they didn’t mean actual spicy, but that everything had too many spices, too much flavour. They didn’t care for poutine, garlic mashed potatoes, burgers, all “too spicy.” (They we’re completely amazed at root beer though, apparently you can’t get root beer in Scotland)
"Didn't care for poutine"???? Were they then shipped off to the federal penitentiary??? (KIDDING.)

So your kid thinks butter is spicy...? That's not even funny your kid has issues man
I still haven't learned to like kale, oysters, and quite a few other things. I am not a picky eater (in fact, fairly adventurous), but some foods are REALLY not for me.
My parents encouraged me to try new foods, but there were many I didn't like then that I now enjoy (like condiments). "I haven't learned to like this" is politely honest.
Load More Replies...Children may be really picky eaters, especially in their toddler years. Researchers say that there are several reasons why little children may not eat certain foods. They may actually just simply have food preferences, they want to feel in control, they feel stressed about mealtime, or have a fear of trying out new foods. It can also be a case of an emotional moment that doesn't have anything to do with food or they are provided with examples of picky eaters.
I love snacking raw mushrooms when preparing them!
Load More Replies...I love mushrooms (not the magic kind) in pretty much every form but cream of mushroom soup
*UNPOPULAR OPINION ALERT* Why does everyone hate pineapple on pizza?! I like it-
Cooked pineapple is nasty to me. I don't like cooked fruit of any kind. That's right, I don't like pie.
Load More Replies...Someone fed her that last one! Look to your Significant Other, i fear you have a 5th column brainwashing the daughter!
Don't knock it, 'til you've tried it. Hawaiian Pizzas are delish! ;oP. (I'm in Oz and it's very popular here, but we also have pineapple and beetroot on our hamburgers, so maybe my tastebuds have been trained).
Load More Replies...Usually, these preferences go away and children broaden their tastes, but it’s always smart to offer them new and different things all the time or try to convince them to taste the same things as taste changes over time.
To encourage children to eat, it is advised to let them be autonomous and choose what plate they want to eat from, with what utensils, and in what order they want to eat. Researchers suggest being sensitive and calm, creating a routine for them, and making sure that mealtimes aren’t stressful.
Like saying, "Oh, you're an excellent artist. You just don't paint anything people want to see." I get it.
WOW! That's like when my friend's kid called me a skinny cow. I was pleased for a minute.
If you want to say someone is stupid, tell them they are fun to play word games with
I was a huge bookworm as a kid and was constantly testing out new words I'd find in books. Once we were at a restaurant eating hamburgers and I said, "This burger tastes queer." I meant weird. That was the only meaning I knew. It'd be years before I figured out why my parents burst out laughing.
I don't remember how old I was when my mother told me I couldn't leave the table until ate my vegetable soup. Throwing up did not change her mind. I wonder to this day what worldwide cataclysm would have occurred due to my failure to eat that soup. Also, I did not like watermelon, and she was not going to be known as the mother who has a kid that doesn't like watermelon.
that's messed up, actually. Could very well be the starting point to eating disorders later in life. WTG, mom.

Mine just like to complain, as they cleaned their plates and sometimes had seconds.....
"or the kids could just be picky" ... "bribe them with a cookie" Not a parent, are you. Kids are picky. Never ever bribe them with desert. Make sure they have access to adequate nutrition (not junk food) and they'll average out from day to day. My great grandson stopped eating crunchy foods for a while.
Load More Replies...My friend's little daughter politely told me "I don't do carrots" as if it was simply a lifestyle choice.
My mother gave us the phrase, "Not my favorite." It came in handy... plus laughter.
Not really; it smells more like old used gym socks or something similar to that. But it tastes like heaven and that's what matters.
Load More Replies...Parmesan smells of sick, I said it once age 7/9 and got a slap for it, but have had Cheddar ever since!
Meatloaf is disgusting! Nothing in it that I don't like. But mashed together? I just can't handle it.
Meatloaf is the same as meatballs or hamburgers. Fail to see the issue.
Load More Replies...The peas will be alright; they have a skin, but the carrots will be hideously contaminated!
My son likes to use "scary". Going to bed, brushing his teeth, vegetables. They're all scary
certain foods should not touch... idk if i agree peas and carrots r in that group though

that reminds me of the sene in despicable me where gru says he likes it so much he's just gonna hold it in his mouth
Doesn't work for our kids. "It will make you poop!" And "this makes you fart!" And "I call this bean dip "Rootie Tootie" all get no's from them.

When my daughter was a teenager, she would just say "yeah, I'm not eating that". Her insults to my cooking got less creative the older she got.
I'm 13. "Your food tastes like a broccoli got beat up until it died." (Better? I don't mean this.)
Load More Replies...In this part of Germay we say "Kann man ohne Stock bei gehen" which roughly translates to "You may approach it without carrying a stick (for protection)"...
I used to say "some would probably say it is better than nothing. They would be wrong."
It's cruel to force someone to eat something they really hate. I suggest the 2 out of 3 rule. Cook three veggies, eg peas, carrots, broccolli. The kid can pick 2 to eat, and reject one. It gives them some control, and a least-worst option.
Yeah, I'm not cooking 3 different vegetables just to appease my son.
Load More Replies...Impossible. Carbonara has bacon in it (or pancetta) and anything with bacon can not possibly taste like barf.
Load More Replies...When I was a kid, maybe 7 or 8, we were really poor. One night for dinner Mom made us burgers, I was trying to compliment her. I said 'Mom, these burgers are Almost as good as McDonalds!' My dad got so mad at me. I think Mom cried. I can't remember, it was a long time ago. But I remember being made to feel a fool by my dad.
We only got to eat fast food once a year, on our birthday. Single parent household, my mom gave us a wonderful childhood with what she could afford and made it a treat. If i had said at 6 that a burger was almost as good as McDonald's, that would be the highest flattery i could give.
Load More Replies...What amazes me are how there are so many kids allergic to foods nowadays. Something weird is going on.
The reason kids today have allergies is a combination of new knowledge on how allergies work, new hormones in the food, and for allergies not related to food, new cleaners and obsessive or constant cleaning. If you don’t want your children or family members to develop allergies, I might suggest growing and raising most of not all of your own food (depending on where you live) and taking them outside on a regular basis. With children, going on walks and asking how food feels if they “don’t like it” (especially with things most children typically like) can give you insight into what allergies they might have. It also will encourage communication which will definitely help in the later years.
Load More Replies...I am so lucky my child was not a picky eater. Didn't like mushrooms, still didn't. That was it. She ate whatever I ate. I am fascinated how some kids are really, really picky and get very upset and some are just fine with everything. There must be some kind of biological or genetic component to it.
My son also loves anything but mushrooms, and my daughter is very picky (though they had quite the same education). She is also very sensitive to smells (which is a sensitivity that people accept more than being sensitive to food or "picky"). So yes uou might be right, there could be some biological explanation...
Load More Replies...When i was young I told my grandmother I like my mother's green beans better because she uses a timer. The real reason My grandmother put onions with her green beans.
My mom still tries to sneak onions past us. It's not that I don't like the flavor they add, but they give me indigestion, and the moment I bite into one, no matter how small, my appetite is gone because I can't stand the consistency! And she thinks she can put them in things, lie and say she didn't, and that I (or others who feel the same) won't notice!
Load More Replies...You work so hard to make homemade quality meals, then one day they stay for lunch at some kids house. Now everything is judged against Kraft Macaroni and Cheese and hot dogs, and it seems our meals do not compare well.
We always gave our kids a treat to go out an eat after the open house at school. My son asked if we were going to do that again one year, and I said yes. He got very excited, because "they make food that tastes better than you do". Ouch.
Think of it this way - if you are paying for a meal out surely it should be better than what you eat at home generally otherwise what's the point?
Load More Replies...My son is 8, and up until about 6 he was a picky eater, because I let him be. I finally got fed up of making two different dinners every night after a long day of work, so I have my son help me make dinner every night. It’s working so far. He still hates tomatoes and eggs, but I think I can live with that.
Kids get over it. My son hated broccoli when he was little...hardly touched vegetables and wouldn't even think of trying clam chowder. Now he grosses his Dad out every time him and I get pizza with mushrooms and olives or we have sandwiches with pickles and mayo all over them.
