Civil society, the complex of organizations, communities, and informal networks that fall between the government and citizens, is essential to a functioning democracy, even when, from the outside, it can look like a bickering mob. It's where regular people converse with one another, exchange ideas, and, at least in theory, share their unfiltered thoughts on power.
Social media has revolutionized the way that civil society works over the past few years. Far from being a distraction or a place for viral dance crazes, platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok have turned into potential tools of democratic conversation. They broadcast ideas, accelerate the dissemination of information, and provide space for civic engagement once the province of institutions and elites.
One key contribution of social media to democracy is access. For hundreds of years, public discussion occurred in newspapers, academic journals, or town halls, occasionally places where people were not all invited. Social media equalized the platform, allowing anyone to potentially reach millions of folks with their message.

Saw an interview with a lady who voted for Trump the other day, and her reasoning for ovoting for him was she thought she was voting for 'family values'. Her entire family was on government support for being disabled, which was now being cut severly, putting them all in huge financial distress. I wouldn't wish that on someone, but hearing her say 'family values', which I got the impression just meant no same-s*x marriage or transsexual healthcare and such, made me have a hard time feeling sorry for her.
A single tweet or series of clips can start a conversation that cuts across borders and demographics, enabling ordinary people to set agendas, spur reform, and educate the world about injustice. Of course, in the age of AI and predatory algorithms, civil society has begun to just frequently turn into smaller and smaller bubbles, but the key components for communication are still there. People often feel more comfortable communicating through the medium of the internet, which can, at times, help foster understanding and curiosity.

Hashtags such as #BlackLivesMatter or #MeToo were not created in newsrooms, they developed out of groundswell demands for reform and awareness. Social media sometimes also promotes accountability. Institutions and government officials are now being watched in real time. When policy decisions are being made, people can react instantaneously, not just with opinions, but with facts, stories, and evidence that enhance the public debate. This openness acts to hold decision-makers accountable and encourages a responsive political culture.

Also, social media enables coalitions. Those who once felt isolated by their experiences or beliefs are now able to connect with like-minded others across geography and social boundaries. You handed us, our kids, our country, and our natural resources over to a f*****t dictator. Our generation (along with those of both my kids probably) will never forgive you.
Yet even so, the good for democracy that social media brings is not without qualification: echo chambers, activist performance, and disinformation all pose real dangers. But none of these undermine its potential as a democratic tool, instead, they highlight the importance of digital literacy, thoughtful platform design, and a culture of civil discourse. Social media, when used well, does not just embody civil society, it makes it more resilient when the channels sharing information are independent. Of course, there is no denying that for every good tweet or post, there are a lot of seriously dumb ones, so always check your sources.

In a world where traditional civic engagement sometimes seems inaccessible or beside the point, social media is the reminder that democracy is more than voting every few years. It's about conversation, critique, and community, and in that sense, each share, post, or comment can be a gesture of democratic engagement.

I heard a MAGA saying the other day that he thought they SHOULD deport native Americans “somewhere,” because white people have “rightfully” conquered America, just like the Romans (or something like that), and it belongs to white people now. Because the U.S.A. is like a teenager who just discovered they’ve bulked up. The rest of the world is older, wiser, calmer. The U.S. government thinks that being powerful and aggressive equals a strong position, the rest of us are baffled that you’ve homeless and families who struggle to eat, veterans who need support and a health system that’s screwed but hey, you’ve got a shiny new missile / tank / aircraft. This is so sad. People are being charged an absolutely atrociously inflated tuition cost, and when they ask the government to step in and do something, because generations are being crippled by this for no reason - the government finally decides to help, and then Trump comes in to ruin it :( it’s so unfair to younger people. They shouldn’t be allowed to be charged so much for education.

Some people seem to be missing the point of this post. Which is that,on aggregate, rent has gotten far beyond the standard of living. In my market, rent for a 1200 sq ft apartment has gone up from $800 to $1500 in less than 5 years. Wages have gone up about %10. That's extortion under the lie of "market forces." That's what this post is about. If your market is doing well, great! But the inability of people to see beyond their own nose is part of what has allowed the injustices of... well, everything forever.

Well, I think we can see the level of thinking from the various points of view. Jerzy gave us some well thought out, articulate, logical political points. Backed up by figures and data. Delivered in a detailed, yet succinct manner. I'm not sure how we can come back from that. He has convinced me completely. I'm off to buy a red hat and steal from a poor person.

I'm fatigued of political stuff. I'm actually quite tired of restricting my purchases to Canadian products only. There's barely any oranges in the produce section. It used to be a whole aisle. I still don't know why BC apples are so expensive, and other stuff that's made in Canada. Hearing parts of the national anthem play at the grocery store is getting nauseating to hear. Idk, I'm not used to nationalism being shoved down my throat and being told to keep Canada as the center point in my mind when shopping. I just want to be able to eat well again without having to spend over $50 for one or 2 bags of groceries.

People are dying due to lack of services formerly provided by the USAID suddenly withdrawn without notice allowing alternatives to be put in place. Ironic that your main complaint was a lack of orange. the reverse is true.

I feel like there's always a part in any economy where the earliest birds are in the dredges, the just-after early worms get everything and everyone after has to live on their handouts. I've seen in happen in everything real life and in multiple game economies, where everyone who came early was always better off. I suppose we've just gotta wait until the next recession passes, and we are the new just-late enough worms.

Moderates and people on the right in most countries see the blatant criminality and petty vindictiveness of the administration and everyone associated with it.
