Whoever is responsible for carpeted bathrooms, flights of stairs leading nowhere, butterfly toilet seat covers, and other disaster design choices should be punished for such crimes. There’s plenty of proof of their misdeeds as well, since a lot of these ''wonders'' end up showcased online. Home listing sites are some of the best places to look for the creme de la creme of design atrocities.

Take a look at Zillow, for instance. It presents real estate listings, most of which might make you want to move houses straight away. However, some feature design choices that are excellent examples of what not to do in your own home. They became sources for two grand collections on Instagram—Nightmare on Zillow Street and Zillow Fails.

Bored Panda has reached out to the two accounts via Instagram. Nightmare on Zillow Street were kind enough to answer a few of our questions. Scroll down to find their thoughts below.

Looking for a new house is not the only reason for browsing real estate listings. Sometimes it’s a great place to find home improvement ideas or vice versa—examples of things you would never do to your beloved nest.

The creator of Nightmare on Zillow Street shared with Bored Panda why they chose to post the latter type of designs on their Instagram account: “It seems to me that people are mostly interested in really bad decor choices more than the actual design of the home. It's all about the shock value! It's fun to laugh. That's what people need more of in their lives!”

The creative mind behind the account admitted to being addicted to Zillow and looking at homes. “Sometimes I see things that I just HAVE to share with the world. Things so bad or shocking that I can't keep it to myself.”

“It always boggles my mind that sellers don't understand the importance of putting together a place that elicits a warm, cozy atmosphere that buyers would want to invest in. And hopefully pay top dollar!” they said.

Would you be tempted to buy a home that embodies bad taste in every room? Because I have an offer for you.

Sadly, not everyone has an eye for detail and impeccable taste in home design. Moreover, not everyone’s ideas make as much sense in real life as they might in their heads. And these pictures are great proof of that.

That is why it might be a good idea to turn to professionals for help. Thankfully, there are nearly 44 thousand of them in the US alone, which provides hope for people willing to invest in the design of their home.

Isn't there an episode of the D**k Van Dyke show where they buy a house with a rock like this in the basement???

Creating a cozy atmosphere is important not only for the sellers trying to allure a potential buyer. People building their home from the ground up usually also want to make it a comfortable place for them to stay. Especially considering that they spend more than half of their time awake at home.

https://www.insider.com/bargain-fixer-upper-mansion-for-sale-upstate-new-york-2021-7 It went for well over asking, but asking was only $100K ;) N.B. It needs more than wiring. See pics in article.

There used to be a mile of old Victorian houses near where I grew up in Syracuse. I dreamed of living in one (with a widow's walk!) when I grew up. But by then they'd all been subdivided or turned into office buildings or burned down. I saw this beautiful house and immediately thought of Syracuse. Elmira is not far from there - definitely an old upstate NY thing.

Reno the inside, replace all the wiring, and I'm good to go! Love the exterior and the interior has massive potential.

This house doesn't belong on this list. Small wiring problems which I could fix myself.

That wiring is not the worst "retrofit" I've seen given the property's obvious age. Just needs a little work well within capabilities of a decently intelligent layperson.

Whatever this house costs, budget 3 times that to make it livable. From the bin there, done that files.

At least it's on the back. Seen worse. There's something weird about it though. It looks vaguely institutional. Like a school or a sanitarium.

This looks like the Commandants Residence for an Armory. We still have a number of them in the Counties around us. All incredibly grand, and beautiful, right in the middle of tract housing.

I'd say heck no! It's one of those 'as is' listings I'm sure. And I'm guessing the wiring isn't the only sinister thing going on.

Nowadays it is easier for people to make decisions about certain design choices. The abundance of different tools, apps, and software allows them to see what their home might look like without having to wait for the actual paint to dry. (Using an app for some of the design features on this list before making them happen would definitely have come in handy.)
