I wouldn't blame the teachers. I wonder how many of the misspellers just didn't read for pleasure. I spent hours and hours reading stories, novels, magazines. Sometimes I would just pull out an encyclopedia volume and flip through it, reading any article that looked interesting. When you read a lot you see these words in context and understand how they work without having classroom drills.
