Schools differ from country to country, and there are some pretty interesting school systems in the world. In The Netherlands, for example, kids start school on their 4th birthday, no matter when the school year starts. Kids in China, in turn, learn on the principle of memorization.

And then there's the US. What most of us know about American schools probably comes from movies and TV. But what are schools in the US really like? Well, here we have a list of pics from many primary sources, the students themselves. They capture the true experience of the American school.

Florida Teacher Here. This Is Our School’s "Library" Now

Florida passed a law that said no books can be displayed in a school, until they've been reviewed and approved by an appointed team. If a teacher shows a book that has not been approved, they could be charged with a felony.

It really is unbelievable how tone deaf the the people who pass these laws are. Fahrenheit 451 and 1984 were not guidebooks. They were WARNINGS!

I was in our town library the other day, they have a whole section of books that have been banned in other countries. With a little blub of what country they were banned in and why they were banned. Guess which country has the most banned books!

I read recently that China has given up on banning books. Apparently, the leadership thinks that there's no point any more. Admittedly, the Chinese Communist Party does totally control what books are allowed in schools, so maybe it's not a fair comparison.

School I'm in gave all the kids iPads, made a big part of the curriculum research based, then blocked so many sites you are lucky to find anything and forget cross referencing. Teacher logins are not much better. Apparently the fault is from local council who failed to provide enough band width for a fraction of the users. They did however seriously limit photocopying because it would not be need if all the kids had iPads. (UK)

Currently, American schools lag a bit behind other countries in the world in terms of their students' academic achievements. When they tested 15-year-olds in their math and science literacy, American teenagers ranked only 38th out of 71 countries. Among other 37 OECD countries in 2022, Americans ranked 38th in math and 12th in science.

Younger students, however, are doing surprisingly more well. In 2015, American fourth-grade students placed 11th out of 48 in math and 8th in science. Eighth-graders scored 8th both in math and science among 37 other countries.

That's not right. If schools were that paranoid about it, they should have issued each student separate devices. Another thing that concerned me with online classrooms is students who were already vulnerable and bullied at school had their personal space exposed to their bullies and that eliminated their safe, private space.

Interestingly, Americans don't think that the quality of education in the U.S. is above average. In fact, 32% of adults believe that when it comes to K-12 STEM education, America ranks below average compared to other wealthy nations. But are statistics of academic achievement all that matter when we talk about schools?

The National Assessment of Educational Progress, or NAEP, also surveys children about how they feel at school. Data shows that younger students report feeling happy "all or most of the time" more than older students. 49% of fourth-graders say they're happy at school, while only 27% of eighth-graders say the same.

This blows my mind as an Aussie, because inter-school school sport is generally within school hours (for state schools, not private) and not commercialised- most football fields and gyms are lucky to have scoreboards! Out of school sport has sponsors, but these are generally limited to the logo/name of a sponsor on jerseys. Only other time I remember these sponsors 'advertising' was when the players were given an eraser with the logo on at the start of the season when my brother played basketball, and the sponsor company went bust before the end of the season!

I was a lunch lady. The food given to schools is the stuff that isn't good enough to sell at the market. It is the bits and ends of meat, crazy high fat content and so many canned goods. Our director was awesome though. High quality baked goods and fresh fruit or veg with almost every lunch. We also were required to serve 3/4 cup total of fruit and veg per meal. This looks like an Ala cart situation which is almost exclusively a high school option.

The sad thing is, this would’ve literally been equal to a 5-star-restaurant meal at my middle school 💀 Shoutout to the half thawed pizzas, still rubbery chicken, mystery meat that caused food poisoning but they served it again the next week (…surprise surprise, food poisoning, at least for the brave ones who got it again, which many skipped over it bc yuck not fun), good times… good times… /s

I work at an Australian school. While we don't have 'active shooter' drills we do have lockdown drills. Not necessarily for a gunman/knifeman or a critical threat, it could be for other reasons where students have to remain in the classroom. There is the same number of lockdown drills as there are fire drills.

We had a few bomb evacuations at my primary school in the 1970s. Pretty much all of us children viewed it all as "just another boring fire drill" except, of course, each time there had been an apparently credible bomb threat passed to the police. So it goes. Back then, it was down to "The Troubles" over the sea in Ireland. My parents grew up with actual bomb-dropping German air raids.

okay for those who arent in school, this is misleading, this is called the "test out browser" its a special browser that only allows the school districts management, submission for assignments and test windows to be opened on it. it classifies everything, but that does not mean its supposed to be blocked. no hate of course but this pic is misleading

In France it is an "Intruder on campus" drill. Somebody goes around trying the door handles to see if we are locked down, and teachers get instructions on their phones to evacvuate their students through the windows if they are on the ground floor. We do not have work phones, and some teachers do not have cell phones.

Those who are not from America might look at this list and think how strange and different American schools are. But the truth is that each country has something different about its education system and schools that might surprise people. Finland, for example, which is often thought to have one of the best education systems in the world might seem strange too.

Good for you. The Hungarian government is playing much bigger: we have a collapsing health system and public education, but we bought an airport for $3.8 billion. And the PM (you know Viktor Orban, Trump mentions him frequently) froze $2B worth of public investment because of the poor state of the budget, but the state bought office buildings from the PM's son-in-law for $1.6B.

Was the same in my high school. The football team was a joke, they hadn't won a game since like 1988. But they still gutted the art department to spend a fortune on a new football field and new uniforms.

The marching band in my school had to fund itself. But the school required one to attend football games. When it rained & the woodwinds had to stow their instruments, people at the games got mad we weren't supporting the football team. We weren't allowed to practice on the football field but used a lined parking lot. The music dept had already been gutted. So transportation on s****y buses, uniforms, large instruments (think tubas), ALL of it came from soliciting donations & fundraisers that required each student to sell x number of crappy products but the parents usually had to pay the difference between what the student sold & what was required. We were the only school in the county and we had to fight everyone fundraising for their own department. The county was so inundated with fundraisers it was hard to sell items. The marching band students had to buy their own shoes and gloves and pay the dry cleaning bill for your uniform. I know there's more but I can't remember it all.

I think it was last year when the school district decided to stop funding the law academy at my high school. This is a school whose Varsity Mock Trial team has won NATIONAL competitions, SEVERAL TIMES. It's so stupid--we have multiple individual national champions, and you still decide to stop giving us money?!?! Like, what the heck?!?! Just a few weeks ago, the Mock Trial team came back from a competition at Yale. We're in Carrollton, Texas. They had to fly there, and it's obviously SUPER expensive. Last year the Law Academy teachers were scrambling around, trying to get some local law firms to help fund us. And still, us Law Academy kids have to sell chocolates throughout the school year to keep the Academy funded. 🙄🙄🙄🙄

This is a public health hazard and should be reported as such. I'm water damage certified. You've got about 72 hrs after an event to get that s**t dried before mold starts growing, and that looks like it's just allowed to sit and cook. Some of those spots are definitely the fruiting body growing through the wall and releasing spores into the air. Guarantee if they're letting it soak the problem is now in the floor and the entire walls. If handled quickly it's a couple hundred to fix. That's gonna cost tens of thousands to fix

If you're going through a challenging time, be proactive and let the school know your kid may be late so they'll at least know you're paying attention. Also, being late can absolutely affect a child's learning. Arriving 10 minutes after a lesson begins means they missed the demonstration of how to fill out the worksheet or the first several pages of the story being read. I get it that this family was going through something & he didn't like the (condescending) tone of the note but 10 minutes is a big deal.

Singaporean schools are often at the top of international ranking tables as well. What American students might find strange in a Singaporean classroom is that teachers are usually the ones who talk the most during lessons and discussions by the students aren't that widely encouraged. Pupils use digital devices in the learning process, as teachers incorporate technology into classrooms.

This is in my wife's hometown, which is small, so she doesn't share my anger. She said it was to raise money for the fall festival. Told my buddy from back home about it and he was just as angry as I was, even calling it child labor.

The artist owns the copyright, not necessarily the physical art. The school no doubt argues that the art was made with their materials so belongs to them.

In my town, the first day of school (or at teacher meet & greet) kids have to bring around $100+ worth of school supplies, paper, paper towels, disinfectant wipes, etc. i figure we already bought the art work

Absolutely! The only way this meal was acceptable is because the student opted to not choose from any other options. Quite possibly, this was all a training athlete could eat that supported training and practice. Sidenote: I loved those hamburgers with a generous helping of mustard. I passed on the side options because they looked nasty. Eventually I brought my own lunch because I had teachers who let me hide in their classroom and eat and do homework so I didn't have to take it home.

Again, yes. Also, this does not look like a standard American school lunch. There's no vegetable, which is required, chocolate milk is rare. TruMoo is a SoCal brand so maybe things are different in Cali but in my neck of the woods, more common was Tony's pizza, beenie weinies, or Salisbury Steak. Generally mixed vegetables, mash potatoes, or tater tots as a side. Often some grapes or other mixed fruit.

All schools in the US are required to have lunch choices and a salad bar for any school participating in the school lunch program and getting those funds. Find out why your schools aren’t giving that. I notice that kids will refuse to get anything healthy and then ask for extras of the unhealthy stuff like this.

The South Korean education system is often lauded as well. Students in Korea spend more time at school than American students. An average American student spends 180 days a year at school, while a Korean student – about 220. Together with Finland, students in South Korea also get the least amount of homework per week.

Honestly, I’d Rather Just Ask For Cash

So we have to buy a $60 box of chocolate bars (which I noticed are now only 0.8 oz when they used to be 1.5 oz), sell the whole box, and only $22 of that goes towards an end of year trip? Just no. I’d rather donate cash and save myself and my kid the headache. Or even do a lemonade stand, or sell bracelets. Seems like the least efficient way to do a fundraiser.

Why doesn't the schools save the money they pay for these chocolate bars and use it to fund the field trips and just have the parents pay any difference in cost for their kids? And then the kids can do their own thing on the side if the parents can't cover the difference.

I do not let my children embarrass themselves selling this school nonsense. It’s mostly parents that sell them to coworkers and people that don’t want them. I teach my children better things instead and reward them myself.

When my son was in grade school (early 1990's) he had a fund raiser. He sold (we donated $20) worth of stuff . Then he comes home with a note that he raised more money than anyone in his class and as a reward was given time in a money machine (they blow money and you get to keep whatever you can grab) He grabbed $30 and we had to pick it up because a grade schooler would probably use it to buy d***s. So my son managed to raise -$10 for the school. So proud. After we realized that this was not some crazy prank.

In Michigan, meals (breakfast, Lunch) are state/federal funded, ever since Covid. No one pays, except staff. Before Covid I would collect pop cans (10 cent deposit) from around the building from indoor sporting/school events, and cash them in once I couldn't move around my janitors closet any more. Proceeds used for past due charges in the lunchroom. Cafeteria staff knew who needed it.

I'm not saying you should do this but on windows you can create a batch file that will run command line inputs. There's a bunch of things you can do with them. For instance you can have it run a web browser and then run itself. You then replace the shortcut for the web browser with one that looks identical but runs your. Bat. Oh I should add that the pause/break key not only will break this run away train, it is in fact the original purpose of it.

Doesn't matter. Data protection laws makes it clear where you can and can not place cameras, and places like toilets and their entrances/exits is one place where you have expectancy of privacy and the right not to be recorded. (there are exceptions such as where the adjoining space is a public space like a town square having a public toilet facility, but this is not the case here)

So the nurse wants a kid bleeding all over the place. Holding the head back and pinching the bridge of the nose doesn't always stop a nosebleed. Headache would depend on severity, kid could have a migraine or undiagnosed brain tumor, etc. Sore throat could be anything from allergies to strep to Mononucleosis.

But they can't have a cough drop in class. Or be given their PRESCRIBED MEDICATION unless it fits in the schedule of this alleged nursing professional!!and we wonder why any idiot would rather homeschool their child instead of tolerate this micromanaging bs that prefers kids be target practice since guns are more protected than our students!!!!

At my school our school nurses medical areas even had separate rooms with a bed and a chair in them for students to rest or sleep. They were by the staff rooms so quite quiet. They understood that paracetamol, a hot water bottle, blanket and a nap helped so much especially for the crippling period pain I used to have. The nurse would check in on you, bring the sick bucket or a warm drink. On a good day I'd feel better quickly and be back at class. On a bad, might be two hours. Understanding and Compassion go a long way. Now kids aren't even allowed out of the class for the toilet or to change their sanitary protection. We've gone backwards. This was 1980s, Matlock, UK.

Here's another fun fact for you: students in Australia and New Zealand sometimes go to school barefoot. Kiwis and Australians going to the local supermarket barefoot isn't so unusual generally, so why should schools be different? Inglewood Primary School in Perth, Australia, has officially adopted a no-shoe policy. "We believe that children need opportunities to explore indoor and outdoor environments without shoes," they stated in a newsletter.

I have no kids, so I'm asking here not trying to be dumb or confrontational, but when there is a blind or deaf child in a standard public classroom isn't the teacher supposed to be given specific material to help that child? Otherwise you end up with things like this. I'm pretty sure that's what's supposed to happen, now, whether it does I guess is a whole other thing.

Yes. That's the way it would be where I teach in Australia. Either we would have supports for them to be able to participate or we would have a different task all together (that teaches the same thing).

Okay, but, assuming this is a primary school… classes usually have to account for every student. With the reasonable adjustments that have to be made for a student with a disability, alternatives should have already been considered.

I'd have a VERY stern word or five with them if this was my kid, about how they are deliberately setting the kid up to fail, disregarding a physical disability that surely, they MUST know about, never mind having a negative mental impact on the kid, effectively bullying the kid by giving them a task they KNOW they can not perform...

You can't tell by this picture, or the expiration date, that this milk is good. The expiration date assumes the milk stays refrigerated. Maybe there was a power outage or some other reason their coolers failed.

This is literally one of the things we do compulsory emergency drills for in Australia. Our Emergency management plans are massive because of all the things we have to be prepared for. A gas leak would most likely be an off-site evacuation, unless the yard is huge.

I graduated high school in 1973. I don't remember how much our yearbook costed, but adjusted for inflation likely way more than $85.

In Germany, you ask the teacher if you can go to the toilet, and if there's no urgent argument against it, they will let you go whenever you need to. (If you take longer than usual or go often, you might get a privat conversation with your teacher).

I used to be kitchen manager of a pizza place. An extra large all meat 16" pizza had a food cost of under $5 and yields 12 large slices. That looks like they're getting 20 slices per pizza and it's just thin cheese. That's "feeding" 20 kids for about $3. These people need to be publicly flogged

Reminds me of my French Canadian biology teacher (even though I'm in the UK.) Most detentions were just extra time at school, to get homework done, or to help the teacher, but Dr. J was old school, so I had to write something like, "I must not speak in class as it is rude and prevents the teacher from doing his job to the maximum of his ability" for as many lines as I could write in the allotted detention time. Totally useless, and it genuinely wasn't me talking either!

While we were meant to remember a few formulas off the top of our head in maths, we were allowed to have a summary book for most things. One of our final exams was closed book, and focused on mental arithmetic without formulas, the other was open book. Writing this out may help, but no way would you need to do it more than a few times.

In my area - Midwest US - they do this b/c the State requires public schools to have a certain number of hours of instruction per year. These passing periods are 4 minutes. If they were five minutes instead of four, which would make keeping track much much easier - it would mean losing 8 minutes of instruction a day. For a school years of 32 weeks, that's over twenty hours of instruction time lost. We pretend that having a four minute rather than a five minute passing period makes a whit of difference.

Wait till he joins the world of the working class. For years my job started at 5 am, first break was at 8 am, lunch was at 11 am, second break was at 12:30 pm. Someone decided we need a balanced work day, work started at 5 am, first break was at 7 am, lunch was at 9 am and second break was at 11:30 am. The only problem with this was the cafeteria schedule was breakfast from 4:30 am to 7 am, lunch was 10 am to 11:30 am. The cafeteria was no allowed to adjust their hours to the new schedule because it would not work with managements daily schedule. A few months later the cafeteria laid off all their employees and shut down due the lack of business.

When my daughter was in high school, the times were super specific like that because the teachers union had negotiated that every Friday was a half day so they could work on lesson plans and the like. The added minutes per day for each class made sure the state-mandated number of hours for students was met. The students got used to it very quickly.

If you don't have it by a certain date the kids are suspended until they get it and a TDAP. They also have to get another Menactra in 12th grade by that certain date in Sept. American school textbooks are a grifter's dream. I had to purchase new editions of books that had less than five changes. Lined my professors' pockets nicely. But a lot of educational material these days are available online, making tomes like these obsolete.

In college, it was infuriating to have to buy a new textbook instead of buying one used from the campus bookstore, because the author had released a "new edition" that was now required...(seriously, if there were any important updates or corrections, a simple companion pamphlet would have sufficed. These weren't books that could have been so egregiously out of date....)

It's made on an online worksheet generator and not official education department material. Teachers don't get every worksheet scrutinised before giving them to students (at least, not where I teach) so this could definitely be a lone teacher.

Unfortunately, for many children in the U.S., school lunch is the only food they can rely on each day. Not because their parents don't care, because they literally can't afford to feed them. We can't just assume the parents are doing less than everything they can.

My nephew says at his high school this is an ongoing problem, bathroom vandalism. I think that's why the need for so many bathroom passes and not letting kids go during class and all that. I don't agree with it, but I think that's why so many schools have cracked down on bathroom use. It's nuts!

Ok I see both pro and con with this. Pro - you buy a ticket to go to a dance and have fun with friends so you get out of homework. Con - you either have no friends, or no money, to go to said dance or you just plain don't want to go so now you're stuck doing homework even if you don't go for a reason outside your control.

In our building, if there was hijinks in the johns, principal would lock the one vandalized. Then, you would have to go to first floor to use bathrooms. LOTS of ratting students out due to the inconvenience factor...it worked. You may have something happen once a year, rarely twice.

Don't get me started on school supplies. The amount of printed work papers/ unused paper that comes home and the used supplies that get sent home at the end of the year have me convinced that we waste a lot in these schools. We now have a stash of about 20 perfectly good scissors because apparently they need fresh scissors out of the package every year. One year my kids all came home with a whole bunch of never used dry erase markers the teacher wanted to get rid of at the end of the year.

Our Coke machines in high school back in the 90's were always lined up with students when the refill guy showed up to claim their cash. You can generally tell just by the stock left in there vs the money stuck in the receptacle.

My school was ~$35k (USD) K-12 (graduated 2002, so who knows now) and all food was extra - didn't even get that. TBH, though, the food service was actually good and cheap... But not free.

From what I've read, the US won't allow proper utensils in most schools because there is a risk they could be used as weapons. Also possible they don't want to have the cost of paying staff to work longer because they are washing more things, even if they are put through a dishwasher.

As I've heard it out, most school buses aren't traveling fast, most anything hitting it will not cause much trouble, but mechanical things and possible fires are more a threat, and getting 40+ young kids off a burning bus when they panic and can't undo a seatbelt would be worse. But any that travel on highways and such should probably have them.

In my high school, while we did have these in the girl bathrooms (though I think they were tampons only, not pads; and I think the price might have been a pound), you could also get free pads and tampons at the school nurse’s office. Just walk in, grab from a box immediately to your left, leave; no need to ask for them or explain why you need them.

Even though it costs money, this would have been preferable to having to go to sick bay and hope there was a nurse there that day if we needed a tampon etc at school. Now the premier of my state has just promised to have free dispensers in every school in the state.

Of course someone doing their job would be best. I would have SUCH a sense of shame if I walked out after cleaning and it looked like this. Also, put in a maintenance request to have the BathRoom painted...with enamel paint.

They do teach the metric system in US schools. The thing is, stuff on sale in the shops in the USA is usually described in US customary units. There's no sense in asking for a 200mm x 130mm plastic supply box when the nearest you're going to get is marked up as 8" x 5" (203.2mm x 127mm if you want to nit-pick). At some point, the US might collectively go "Argh, this is silly" and stop it, but I wouldn't hold your breath. Here in the UK we don't seem ready to give up on our beer in pints or roads in miles.
