There was a time when every person with a dream and a hammer could shape their home into what they wanted. Unfortunately, the average person has little to no understanding of things like structural integrity and basic maintenance, so in the modern world, professionals are needed.

Sometimes home inspectors come across issues so glaring and decisions so confusing that they just had to take a picture and share it online. We also got in touch with James Brock from Boston Home Inspectors to learn more about the things that often go wrong. So get comfortable as you scroll through, take some notes on what not to do, and upvote your favorite examples.

Bored Panda got in touch with James Brock from Boston Home Inspectors to learn a bit more about the field and the various things that go on in it and he was kind enough to answer some of our questions. Firstly, we were curious to learn more about the most common issues home inspectors come across.

“B—-y realtors…The most common issues are porch and deck items. Uneven steps causing tripping hazards, loose railings, twisted or deteriorated posts, undersized footings, rotted deck boards, missing ledger board flashing, and a deck pulling away from the house. Homeowners really should have their porches and decks inspected every other year for safety and condition by a professional,” he shared with Bored Panda.

If the heat is on in the house and the insulation is done correctly, you shouldn't have to worry about pipes freezing. If no one is in the house to keep the heat on, or the people who built your house did a bad job on the insulation, then you might have a problem, and either the water system needs to be drained if no one is living there, or you have to take other measures to prevent freezing, like leaving the faucet dripping during cold snaps. I live in a very old house where the kitchen was added on much later, possibly converted from a porch (we think probably in the 60s) and there's basically no insulation in there; when it gets especially cold, we have to keep space heaters pointed under the sink. If we were going to be gone for an extended period in winter, we'd have to drain the system or risk something like the above ice rink.

That's the safety pin. Its purpose is to block the actual fuse mechanism. It's like the safety lever on a gun, even when it's disengaged it won't do anything unless the trigger is pulled or in this case the fuse. Still, this grenade is improperly stored (assuming it's a real one which I doubt) and you definitely need a bomb squad there.

You can see that the end of the pin is split in two and bent outwards to prevent it from coming out. My guess is that this is a grenade that his been emptied of the black powder and is just for display.

Iirc, the story behind this is that the house in the back belongs to one of two brothers, and the "house" in the front was built by the other brother out of spite and to ruin the view for the other house.

“This is the main reason realtors don’t allow the homeowner to attend the inspection. It would feel like a violation of your privacy. With that said most homeowners are pretty good with the fair assessment we give of their homes. The biggest problem we have is with builders who build and/or renovate a place and want to be there during the inspection,” he shared.

That happened to me. It still gives me nightmares. It's oil from the old heating element. We replaced it while renovating a 180 year old house. They didn't vent it properly and vented it through the old chimney. It heats up the oil lining the chimney and when moisture gets in, it started oozing. It oozed down three stories after we have replaced the walls and refined the ceilings. My condolences to this unfortunate soul.

In this condition, it already doesn’t support anything, it’s not structural anymore. And yet everything is still standing. Nobody here, nor the OP, knows anything about this building that could have been modified a lot (to get a bigger open and unobstructed area, a very common transformation) This pole could very well have been assessed by a professional as not necessary, waiting to be removed.

    Kira Okah

2 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Then why is it even there in the first place, where people in forklifts can drive into it? What is more likely is that the other support columns (of which you can see one in the background) have taken the addtional load off the broken column. Structures like this have extra safety margins built into them, but adding stress to the other columns would shorten their lifespan. Whether or not this was or wasn't a load bearing column, it's a hazard. If it were going to be removed, why is the boss saying it doesn't need fixing instead of explaining that they are waiting for a team?

That's crazy! If this is in the US, they should go straight to city inspectors! There's no way that this will pass occupancy and the landlord will be liable for some hefty fines for that mess. Those tenants need to leave immediately and the landlord should be responsible for putting up lodging for them while their home is being repaired. They should check with advocacy groups for legal help if the landlord won't do this and if he tries to charge rent for the time that they've been forced out of their apartment. They should document everything to protect their rights.

In a warm environment with high humidity, you run hot water to the toilet so it doesn't sweat like your glass of ice cold lemonade on a hot day. It keeps water from running down the toilet, and then, underneath, thus wrecking the subfloor (among other things).

freezers are for storing the 'objects' until you have the time and equipment to 'dispose of them' without calling too much attention to the process. Stove is for sterilizing items that are too rare or expensive to be thrown out. Anyone seen that series about people slowly *breaking* down in a *bad* way?

I had a small fish pond where these giant frogs that sounded like telephones ringing would come congregate at from all around the neighborhood. They would leave these like basketball sized egg clutches filling the pond solid and the fish could barely swim and wouldn't eat them. They all turned into tadpoles and I had enough so I started reluctantly scooping like 100lb of tadpoles out of the pond. The next day I went out and wondered why the yard was black. Then it started flying around. About a trillion flies were going nuts on the tadpoles, and the smell....

From the look of it those aren't dirty footprints, the carpet is actually waterlogged and standing on it creates a wet footprint. A friend had that happen when a pipe burst in his ensuite. Fortunately they caught on within an hour or two. This looks like there's been a slow leak in that closed off room for weeks.

I'm sure this one has been on here before and we discussed it then. It's a bit hard to tell the exact volume of water but it looks like it's between 1 and 1.5 cubic metres so somewhere between 1 and 1.5 tons (1000 - 1500kg). Just guesstimating by the window heights and the kid, I'm leaning towards the low end of that. Still, a ton of water is a fair chunk of weight for a balcony.

That’s not how it’s assessed. A concrete slab like this residential balcony is expected to support a uniform load of 150kg/m2 plus a localized load of 100kg. That’s 15cm of water and a heavy adult. Anything heavier is a danger and the slab resists only because of the safety factor (2 to 5).

I had a similar issue, but with electricity, not mold. Back in the early '00s, I lived in an apartment that had been built sometime in the '70s/80s. Within maybe six months of my moving in, I had an issue where half the electricity in my apartment went out, the other half still worked. The power company came out to fix it, and the guy they sent out actually admitted to me that the apartment management had been told that the complex's wiring was so old that the whole complex needed to be rewired, but management was too cheap to do that, so they had no problem just leaving it up to the individual tenants to have the power company come out and put a bandaid on it. I went through that a couple more times, because I couldn't afford to move right away, but as soon as I could move, I did.

Does that not have to be fixed before they sell the house? Realtors have to inform prospective buyers that a death occurred in the house, but I would think the flooring would have to be replaced or seriously repaired before selling.

I lived in an apartment complex in Texas on the top floor. When I came in from work, one day, I walked into my apartment into a few inches of water over the entire floor, and then went downstairs and knocked on the downstairs door. She opened the door, and I saw water coming out of all her ceiling light fixtures. The problem ended up being a broken pipe.

That is a GFI (Ground Fault Interrupter) tester (plugged in to the outlet). What the GFI does is if it detects a fault/problem in the circuit it cuts off the power. Any outlet that is near water must be a GFI outlet. Basically, what is being shown in the picture is that the outlet isn't a GFI and that could easily lead to someone getting electrocuted (water, electricity, and humans don't mix well). And even with a GFI on that outlet it is a very bad idea to be in the water and plugging in some electrical appliance. That plug should have never been put in.

I remember reading that in the UK, there are laws that an electric point can't be in a bathroom at all, to avoid things like this. I thought it was overkill, we just don't have them next to the tub, but maybe I was wrong.

All those movies where people take the sim out and break it to prevent tracking come to mind...

Maybe an old clothing tag or from an old credit card?

Looks like a phone sim. Could have been a partner switching sims to cheat on their spouse, or selling drugs, or some cool spy s**t. Or more likely it's an old sim they didn't want to lose then never actually needed again and just forgot about.

Melty. It's following a pretty set track though. Sunbeam off a glass pane reflecting onto the siding?

Was it L.A. where they built a building, maybe Guggenheim, with reflective panels that caused the side walk temp to go to 145 degrees during one part of the day?

Vinyl siding near a heat source is not pretty. Saw a house in Phoenix where the west and south sides of the home were slowly oozing downward.

The neighborhood we moved from had several houses with vinyl siding damaged in this way. Sun light reflecting just right of a neighboring homes windows will cook siding with the quickness.

Looks like carpeting and some old tighty whitey underwear that someone put there to help absorb some of the leaking water

Who is the smart person there who thinks they can stop a leak with a blanket and carpet ..until they leave and you inherited their expertise

I like how they've angled that carpet under there - 3 whole layers! Looks like they were trying very hard to keep that piece of wood dry.
