Home Inspectors Share The Funniest And Most Questionable Things They’ve Seen On The Job (50 Pics)
Interview With ExpertThere was a time when every person with a dream and a hammer could shape their home into what they wanted. Unfortunately, the average person has little to no understanding of things like structural integrity and basic maintenance, so in the modern world, professionals are needed.
Sometimes home inspectors come across issues so glaring and decisions so confusing that they just had to take a picture and share it online. We also got in touch with James Brock from Boston Home Inspectors to learn more about the things that often go wrong. So get comfortable as you scroll through, take some notes on what not to do, and upvote your favorite examples.

Always Get A Home Inspection Before Purchase Folks
Makes you wonder if they hired someone to put it in but got ripped off, or whether they did it themselves.
This is an excellent example of why to hire an experienced home inspector. The average home buyer would never have caught this on their own.
Really tickled by their sheetrock job though. They have sheetrock joints not supported by studs and they just screwed scrap pieces in behind it. Seems like that will crack the mud/tape later

Load More Replies...Bored Panda got in touch with James Brock from Boston Home Inspectors to learn a bit more about the field and the various things that go on in it and he was kind enough to answer some of our questions. Firstly, we were curious to learn more about the most common issues home inspectors come across.
“B—-y realtors…The most common issues are porch and deck items. Uneven steps causing tripping hazards, loose railings, twisted or deteriorated posts, undersized footings, rotted deck boards, missing ledger board flashing, and a deck pulling away from the house. Homeowners really should have their porches and decks inspected every other year for safety and condition by a professional,” he shared with Bored Panda.

What Happens When The Water Is Not Turned Off In A Non Winterized House. 5ft Frozen Solid
Yep...my cousin lives in Spain through winter and one year forgot to turn off the water. Mess not quite as impressive as this pic but it was pretty bad. Floors and carpets all ruined.
Turning off water in winter? Are there places in the developed world in 2023 where you can’t have running water in winter?
If the heat is on in the house and the insulation is done correctly, you shouldn't have to worry about pipes freezing. If no one is in the house to keep the heat on, or the people who built your house did a bad job on the insulation, then you might have a problem, and either the water system needs to be drained if no one is living there, or you have to take other measures to prevent freezing, like leaving the faucet dripping during cold snaps. I live in a very old house where the kitchen was added on much later, possibly converted from a porch (we think probably in the 60s) and there's basically no insulation in there; when it gets especially cold, we have to keep space heaters pointed under the sink. If we were going to be gone for an extended period in winter, we'd have to drain the system or risk something like the above ice rink.

That's the safety pin. Its purpose is to block the actual fuse mechanism. It's like the safety lever on a gun, even when it's disengaged it won't do anything unless the trigger is pulled or in this case the fuse. Still, this grenade is improperly stored (assuming it's a real one which I doubt) and you definitely need a bomb squad there.

It oozed down three stories after we have replaced the walls and refined the ceilings. My condolences to this unfortunate soul.

“The builder always knows more than the home inspector and his ‘guys’ never make mistakes. On several occasions, I have had to request the manufacturer's representative to meet at the property to prove to the builder that for example the siding was not installed properly. I have one in a very expensive town, a new building that I flagged as the asphalt roof was not installed properly.”
This Structural Pole My Boss Refuses To Fix
In this condition, it already doesn’t support anything, it’s not structural anymore. And yet everything is still standing. Nobody here, nor the OP, knows anything about this building that could have been modified a lot (to get a bigger open and unobstructed area, a very common transformation) This pole could very well have been assessed by a professional as not necessary, waiting to be removed.
Then why is it even there in the first place, where people in forklifts can drive into it? What is more likely is that the other support columns (of which you can see one in the background) have taken the addtional load off the broken column. Structures like this have extra safety margins built into them, but adding stress to the other columns would shorten their lifespan. Whether or not this was or wasn't a load bearing column, it's a hazard. If it were going to be removed, why is the boss saying it doesn't need fixing instead of explaining that they are waiting for a team?
Load More Replies...Great! You refuse to fix? I refuse to let you get away with this. Excuse me, I need to make some phone calls.... no relation to the broken support pole, don't worry.
Do you happen to have a “Health and Safety Committee”? Perhaps you’d like to get them involved with this. Just a thought.
My Landlord Sucks
That's crazy! If this is in the US, they should go straight to city inspectors! There's no way that this will pass occupancy and the landlord will be liable for some hefty fines for that mess. Those tenants need to leave immediately and the landlord should be responsible for putting up lodging for them while their home is being repaired. They should check with advocacy groups for legal help if the landlord won't do this and if he tries to charge rent for the time that they've been forced out of their apartment. They should document everything to protect their rights.
"Those tenants need to leave immediately"...agreed, but given the shortage of affordable housing (US) nearly everywhere....

Found Out Through Home Inspection That The Toilet Is Plumbed With Hot Water, Interesting Infrared Image
Oh, my gosh. We had a toilet plumbed with hot water in a house that we bought one time. If you think that would be nice on your backside, you're wrong. Sitting for too long made for an all-over moist rump.
It looks somewhat Simpsonesque, if you just take a glance while scrolling.
Load More Replies...In a warm environment with high humidity, you run hot water to the toilet so it doesn't sweat like your glass of ice cold lemonade on a hot day. It keeps water from running down the toilet, and then, underneath, thus wrecking the subfloor (among other things).
I have lived in tropical north Queensland. You will not find a more humid environment than that, and NO TOILET ANYWHERE in that part of the world had hot water going through it, and the problem described was non-existent.

I would be rubbish in this situation because I would want to kill any of them but I would have no idea what to do. So I would probably just stand and scream at them
I had a small fish pond where these giant frogs that sounded like telephones ringing would come congregate at from all around the neighborhood. They would leave these like basketball sized egg clutches filling the pond solid and the fish could barely swim and wouldn't eat them. They all turned into tadpoles and I had enough so I started reluctantly scooping like 100lb of tadpoles out of the pond. The next day I went out and wondered why the yard was black. Then it started flying around. About a trillion flies were going nuts on the tadpoles, and the smell....

Will The Balcony Resist The Weight?
I'm sure this one has been on here before and we discussed it then. It's a bit hard to tell the exact volume of water but it looks like it's between 1 and 1.5 cubic metres so somewhere between 1 and 1.5 tons (1000 - 1500kg). Just guesstimating by the window heights and the kid, I'm leaning towards the low end of that. Still, a ton of water is a fair chunk of weight for a balcony.
That’s not how it’s assessed. A concrete slab like this residential balcony is expected to support a uniform load of 150kg/m2 plus a localized load of 100kg. That’s 15cm of water and a heavy adult. Anything heavier is a danger and the slab resists only because of the safety factor (2 to 5).
Load More Replies...If it does actually hold that weight then that is an absolute genius idea. If it doesn't then it's just stupid

There's A Mushroom Growing Out Of The Carpet In My Room
Sometime in the 2000's, there was an apartment complex that got completely tore down and rebuilt because of mushrooms under the carpeting near me. It's just insane what the people in charge can get away with.
I had a similar issue, but with electricity, not mold. Back in the early '00s, I lived in an apartment that had been built sometime in the '70s/80s. Within maybe six months of my moving in, I had an issue where half the electricity in my apartment went out, the other half still worked. The power company came out to fix it, and the guy they sent out actually admitted to me that the apartment management had been told that the complex's wiring was so old that the whole complex needed to be rewired, but management was too cheap to do that, so they had no problem just leaving it up to the individual tenants to have the power company come out and put a bandaid on it. I went through that a couple more times, because I couldn't afford to move right away, but as soon as I could move, I did.

That is a GFI (Ground Fault Interrupter) tester (plugged in to the outlet). What the GFI does is if it detects a fault/problem in the circuit it cuts off the power. Any outlet that is near water must be a GFI outlet. Basically, what is being shown in the picture is that the outlet isn't a GFI and that could easily lead to someone getting electrocuted (water, electricity, and humans don't mix well). And even with a GFI on that outlet it is a very bad idea to be in the water and plugging in some electrical appliance. That plug should have never been put in.

its a sim card, not an SD card. plus you should never ever put random cards in your devices unless you want to catch e-aids.
