I did not intend to cry today, for the first time since 11 weeks because my wife had a stroke. Yet here we are.

My heart! First thing this single dad thought of after getting a bonus was to pay back the kindness.

I am fortunate to own a decent-sized house (that I bought 23 years ago). It was about $400,000 less than it's worth now. People assume that because I live in that house, I don't struggle, but keeping it temperate and keeping food on the table are huge struggles.

When training my dog, I used hand gestures with every command, just in case she goes deaf later in life. It also keeps her on her toes just to use gestures rather than words. She loves it. Especially “boop”, which is simply me pointing at her. She brings her nose to my finger. It was almost self-taught, as she did it once, saw my laughing reaction, and wants to so it all the time now.

Before we met dogs, we where monkeys. Dogs gave us a pack, the ability to communicate with delicacy, share with others and all the rock and roll that we have, because most importantly- they gave us their time so we could have free-time

The Giving Everyday Instagram account is part of the Giving Everyday Charitable Trust, a project dedicated to spreading positive news and lifting up Americans' spirits by sharing random acts of kindness. "We hope to offer an alternative to the negativity by offering news story ideas of acts of kindness and charity to local, regional and national news organizations," they claim on their website.

The creators of Giving Everyday started the project during the COVID-19 pandemic. Or, as they say, at the time when most of us needed at least a nugget of positivity in our lives. "We were struck by the outpouring of goodness we saw in American society – from widespread public shows of appreciation to healthcare workers, to neighbors helping each other deal with the ravages of this insidious disease, to strangers helping others in both small and monumental ways," the project's creators write.

I wanted to buy a car with the first money I earned. I found one that was a good fit. The seller was closer to where my father lived, so I asked "Daddy" to buy the car and transferred the money to him. He stole most of the money and bought me a broken car for 100 bucks on eBay. I went to pick it up and immuduately broke down. It cost me 200 bucks to get a tow truck and 300 bucks to dispose of the car. I gave 1500 to my father. So I lost 2000 because my father is a dirty thief who doesn't even stop at his own children. Thank God He is Dead.

Wow! U have a wonderful mom! My family is ok financially but we do struggle sometimes with 4kids total, but my grandparents r always there for us and spoil us when my parents can’t. I try my best to, and when I had my first sibling, I made a solem promise to myself to spend my first paycheck(s) on a family trip! I love my mom, and you should all be more grateful for ur teachers, my dad is one and he works so hard u wouldn’t believe, all while dealing with physical disability’s from the war…I came this close to not existing with my dad. Life has taught me to be grateful for everything, even the bad parts…

That sounds like something my son would do. Whenever he visits, he leaves me "messages" by flipping books on my bookcases upside down. He's very partial to Steve Martin's (yes, THAT Steve Martin) "The Pleasure of My Company" Sue Miller's "While I Was Gone" and Ann Patchett's "State of Wonder". So glad he got my sense of humor.

The pediatric teams at hospitals are just the best. My toddler had to get a minor surgery and of course I was more nervous than he was, so we brought his stuffed dinosaur. The staff let him play with the oxygen mask with strawberry scent and used his dinosaur to show him how it was used and he loved it <3

If this wouldn't be done by the doctor, I would have done it by myself. Plushies can be very important and supportive for young children. Having a shared experience like the operation makes the bond stronger and the kid can talk about it with his best friend.

This was me in nursing school at age 17. I didnt live in a car, but I got no sleep at home. They pulled me out of class to test me, rumours spread amoung the teachers and students, and it seemed like a big anticlimax when I was drugfree. PPT, s**t state "service " for teens told me I was clean as if I cheated and then asked if there was anything else bothering me. I told him a shitload about abuse, neglect and alcoholism, he said OK and sent me on my way. I guess he was satisfied by that.

The William Booth Center is a program for convicted felons, giving them shelter, food and job assistance. We would often get candidates to fill out applications at the Bulk Mailing Center where I was the Director of Administration. I had one guy "L" who came in for an interview. He was very honest about why he'd been incarcerated. He was personable and somehow I just KNEW if I gave this guy a chance, he would work his @ss off for me. Boy did he! He went from warehouse worker, to driver, to Transportation Manager in less than a year. He was walking a new hire driver around and introduced him to me. As they were walking away, "L" tells the guy, "Michelle is great to work for, but don't ever f*ck with her. She's tough, but she's fair. Do your job right and she will always have your back." It was probably one of the nicest compliments I was never supposed to hear.

At a time when America (and the world) seemed to be more divided than ever, the Giving Everyday project sought to highlight the ways in which we're similar. "The acts of kindness and charity we share serve to remind Americans of who we are at our core – the helpers, the givers, the supporters – and ultimately show us that we are stronger than we give ourselves credit for," the creators claim.

At the same time, they admit that their vision might seem somewhat utopian. "We know it may appear that we are naïve and full of wishful thinking, but perhaps returning to a more innocent time is just what we need to rebuild what has been splintering."

For several summers I enjoyed someone in the flat on the other side of the road playing the piano with the window open. Those were the most relaxing, wonderful afternoons and weekend mornings. Unfortunately for me he left home to go to university, but I hope he's happy and draws strength and joy from his music.

My elderly neighbor plays his music at such a high volume that I have to wonder how he's able to be in the same room ; I play mine loud too, but nowhere near his level! Turns out, he's deaf in one ear & not hearing so well in the other. When his wife was still alive, I'd text her when he played certain favorites--it took a while for them to believe that I wasn't complaining about the 'noise,' but they finally got it that I love sitting on my porch & listening--we like the same stuff so it's great, actually. He still plays the music almost every night, but it's just him now, so I text him with requests. Great guy, but poor thing is so lonely. I check on him regularly, especially if he goes radio-silent more than a couple of nights. They say fences make good neighbors, but I think similar taste in music & a good sound system are better!

What men who responded? The bartender and the manager are the only people named and no pronouns were used. Even if they are men why should we be putting them on a pedestal for what is literally the appropriate response to a crime being committed. All hail the men who didnt let a girl be raped. FFS. The bar is so low its in the fifth level of hell.

Glad no one got hurt and that the bar replaced all of the drinks that could've been drugged and let the person who's drink that was spiked know in case the one that drugged it was a "friend".

It's not that they replaced all the drinks that a might have been drugged - they knew which specific drink it was - it was a way of not singling out the victim and potentially endangering her. By replacing every woman's drink and telling her in confidence the guy who drugged the drink wouldn't know for sure that he'd been caught and thus she could leave his company without a confrontation.

Sometimes i will ask a question. Sometimes it doesn't hurt to ask questions on a subject, even if you're given a 'well duh' look from others. In my experience there are usually a few people who don't actually understand or know the answer.

It sure isn't! My grandson is not biologically related to me. But, from the first time I held at a couple days old, I loved him so much!! He's six years old and lives with me. Love and family has nothing to do blood relations.

However, there's a discrepancy between what we say we want and what we actually do. In 2014, researchers studied whether people click on good news articles more than they do on negative ones. Interestingly, even if they said they preferred good news, they still clicked more on headlines with negative words in them.

I have an old answering machine that has a message on it from my father. He messes up the message and you can hear my mother laugh in the background. They have both been gone for years now. I listen to it on a regular basis. And I am scared silly that one day the machine will fail and I will lose the message. I need to find a cassette recorder and copy the message.

Most of us are already familiar with negativity bias: we react more strongly to negative news than we do to positive news. But how can we fight it, and how can we build resilience to "doom-scrolling," "headline anxiety," and "headline stress disorder"? The APA claims that a "media restriction diet" is a good way to start.

I am really struggling. I can seem to wrap my head around the fact that every human being in the world does NOT want to be like this? WHY? I have never felt better in my life than when I am doing something for someone else... especially, when they didn't ask for it. When good comes my way, yes, its fabulous! But that fab feeling wears off a lot quicker than when the good thing is happening to someone else. I don't understand lack of empathy. I don't understand hate for someone you don't even know. I'm struggling, knowing that half of my country (MORE THAN HALF!!) would vote for the HOPE of cheaper gas and groceries, rather than BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS. I'm so sorry fellow pandas, for blurting all this out on here... I just can't hold it in any longer... and I worry more about Ukraine today than I have over the last 2+ years that Putin invaded their land.

In my hometown in Germany we have a non-profit association that regularily drives to the Ukraine - we check what they need, buy our share, and hand it over. It might not be much, but all in all, we hope it makes a difference. No. We are sure it makes a difference.

I think men also don't get as many clear opportunities to step up. Not that they couldn't/don't choose to be good individually, but social pressures hold them back a lot. I would love to see more times a public call for help like this goes out, those kids got to see the men in their community step up for them and it's beautiful

In a previous interview, licensed psychologist Nathan Brandon, Psy.D., explained to Bored Panda that people should curate their social media experience to avoid unnecessary stress. "This involves actively choosing to follow accounts that align with your values and unfollowing toxic or triggering content. It can also be beneficial to turn off notifications for news stories that may create anxiety so you can read them when you're ready rather than being bombarded with them throughout the day," he said.

As my dad got older, into his 90's, I started saving all of his VM messages because I knew he wouldn't be around much longer. Surprisingly, he lived until he was 93, which was wonderful! But sadly my phone battery exploded and I lost everything on it. I miss his voice so much! He had the most comforting, loving voice. He's been gone 7 yrs next week and I still miss him terribly. :'(

Matthew Price, PhD, claims that people should be more proactive on the issues they care about as well. "What sort of values does the patient want to strive for, and then what can they actually do to achieve, to work toward those values,” Price explained. "Scrolling more on Twitter is not going to be in service of that value, or of any value that one might have."

The men who play Santa are some of the kindest, most caring people I've met/seen. I think you have to have a special soul, and a heart full of love, to play Santa.

Another way to combat bad news fatigue is random acts of kindness. Which, scientists say, can be contagious. In 2023, researchers from UCLA’s Bedari Kindness Institute conducted a study where they found out that watching videos of people doing good deeds inspires others to do good as well. After watching Unsung Hero videos, the participants gave 25% more to charity than the control group.

So, in a way, we can say that kindness is contagious. Katelyn Millinor, LPC, explains that doing kind acts lights up the pleasure center of our brain and releases serotonin (the happiness hormone) and oxytocin (the love hormone). So, being kind not only feels good but is actually good for you.

There is a video filmed in the winter in norway, as an experiment. Its a young child with bare clothing on a busstop in the snow. Its so sweet seeing all the people taking the clothes of their backs to warm the child ❤️ found it https://youtu.be/L9O8j9QPZc8 ...well, its norway. in the US it's not uncommon to see people on welfare in the grocery store with kids dressed completely inadequately for the winter weather, but in the cart is beer and smokes. Sorry but if you're going to live off the taxpayers, tobacco products and alcohol should be prohibited.

Maybe it can't, but it sure can reduce a lot of unhappiness. You will never see a poor person say, "Money can't buy happiness." I know this is off topic, but as someone who has struggled financially my entire life, when I hear people who have enough money to live on say this, it irks me

I (woman) keep telling women to just come out and say what's on your mind to a man. Hints or "I shouldn't have to remind him" mean nothing. A man wants you to say exactly what your point is without faffing around and if you give him gift ideas for you as well, he'll be ecstatic. Just literally say "I'm reminding you now that it's our anniversary next Tuesday" - he'll appreciate it

I did this with wine once. A young woman was buying what were clearly treats for a date night (either with herself or someone else, I don't know) and kept looking at a bottle of wine costing around 9 euros. She then went to another shelf and picked up a bottle for around €2.50. I bought the €9 bottle and hung around the exit. When she came out, I "randomly" approached her and told her I'd bought the wrong one and it would not get used in my household. She politely refused a couple of times before accepting it with tears in her eyes. I hope she had a lovely night

Great idea but most patients in a hospital either can't really see out of a window or can see nothing but another part of the hospital. Daylight is important but it might be better to have an LED screen that looks like a window, display an outdoor image. Neither time I've been in, was I in the bed by the window. And most people I've visited in hospitals didn't really have a view worth seeing.

None of the Jumbo Supermarkets I've been to have this. This news was pre-covid and stores have now opted for mostly self-checkout. There's no chat-corner anymore. They even removed the coffee machine where you could get a free cup of coffee or tea. 2

I see this and can't help but think of an incident a friend saw. Window washer rigged something wrong and fell. The rig had enough resistance to keep him from being killed, broke his feet and ankles I think he said. To beat all, it wasn't the first time. Now picture this guy dressed as a superhero falling past some kids window.

My grandmother worked for Southern Bell Telephone Company for many years. She helped map telephone lines for most of south Georgia, in fact. Most smartphones weren't very accessible for her during the last few years of her life, but talking on the phone was one of her main hobbies. My sister and I got her a GrandPad, which is a very simple tablet for elderly people, and she was able to voice and video call us and her friends! I've heard Google has a similar product and I'm super glad those options are more widely available now.

Depends where you are. NZ buildings typically have dwangs (also called nogs) across preventing cable routing to where you need to go requiring the notching out of the dwangs for any additions in older homes. image009-6...2e2278.jpg image009-672eef62e2278.jpg

There's a similar group in my area, 'Men in Sheds'. You don't have to be widowed to join. It's a group of older men who meet. Initially their focus was on helping relieve loneliness, but it's changed. They use their 'shed knowledge ' to help others in their community.

Near me it was ROMEO riders. Retired Old Men Eating Out. Motorcyclists that would go out on a weekday ride & meet up at a pre-arranged lunch spot so that if they got separated, or didn't want to or couldn't ride as a group, they could at least still meet up.

My dad is part of a group of older men that bicycle together and meet for breakfast once a week. There is something really lovely in seeing a group of 70 and 80 year old men slowly cycling down a two lane road through the country. Dad says it reminds him of when they were kids 💛 When someone can't ride, one of the other men will pick him up and take him to their breakfast spot. I am so glad they have each other.

Years ago, there was a group of retired men who used to walk around a local park for a couple of hours every morning. We referred to them as "the guys". Someone in the group would know something about anything, so when my water heater broke, I went to the park and waited for them. One of the guys had been a plumber, and told me where to go and what kind of water heater to buy. The store sent a guy to install it. Also, when the wife of one of the guys passed away, he skipped the walk until the group went to his house and gathered him up so he wouldn't be alone.

Had to look him up. He's the quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles and I found this awesome tidbit on his Wikipedia page: "Jalen Hurts is an advocate for women in sports and employs an all-female management team, including his social media, marketing, communications, and sports agent team members. In 2021, Hurts honored female empowerment and women in sports when participating in the NFL's 'My Cause, My Cleats' initiative." So, even though I don't watch football, I'm now officially Team Hurts!

The clothing suggests conservative Orthodox Jews. They tend to marry young, and have an average of around 7 children. It's not unusual for people to start having children at 20, and grand children at 40, great grands at 60, etc. By the age of 104, there is the possibility of having great great great grand children. I have no difficulties in believing this is one family.

    Jp@nda

1 year ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

It is simple. It's because white men have historically had all of the power. They have never been part of a minority group, and they have been treated as superior. Whereas women and other minority groups have been treated as inferior. So someone like that would have the audacity to not only interrupt someone there speaking as an authority, but to correct them. I am white. I don't get mad when people speak of the disparities created by racism, I know I can only do my job to educate and attempt to create a world where this doesn't exist. A world where anyone can be assumed to know what they're talking about and to not constantly have to justify themselves.

Reappears some time later, he went to the gas station to get me some crisps and a bottle of coke. Oh and he'd regularly get mad at other parents for nt being willing to pick up kids in the middle of the night, he'd just be like, f**k it, I'll set an alarm.

That's awesome. I too have a super thoughtful dad. I'm nearly 50 years old and he still does little things for me just because he wants to. He noticed there was a dent in my car and took it to get looked at while I was busy working. While he was there they noticed I needed new tires so he did that as well. (I paid him back of course) Then he figured he'd take care of my yearly inspection too. The man is a saint! Now there are 3 annoying errands I don't have to run on the weekend.

Imagine if we taught all school children basic DIY skills and encouraged them to use the skills for the good of the community, praising them and seeing it as much as a recommendation for their first job as a school report?

Firefighters are incredible people. They go against every ingrained survival instinct to run into a burning building to save people they don't even know. Pictures like this remind me of the former NYC firefighters that reported to their old fire stations on 911 because they knew they would be needed. They are true heroes.

My grandma used to stand and stare at it then shake her head and say "if you don't mind, I'll take the stairs". I think of that old lady every time I step on an escalator.

We do this whenever we have a party, we try to keep the noise levels down, but sometimes things get a little loud when a group of people are having fun. People here have the tendency to call the police instead of just telling us the music is too loud, so far we have had no issues, but instead lovely get-togethers with our neighbours.

Bought a fridge off fb. It was $100. When I went to pick it up, the guy said " i forgot how dirty it is" .it was just dusty inside a bit. He dropped theprice to $40. I dont know how old it was when i bought it but it was almond colored not stainless steel. That fridge lasted another 10 years. Forever gratefull.

I used to build computers and give them to people, young and old, who couldn't afford one. It finally got to the point where a free PC wasn't good enough. they wanted laptops. Sorry, I can't "build" a laptop. I now have about 20 machines collecting dust that I can't give away because people are too dang picky. I've been trying to give away a 52" plasma TV for the past few months. Pretty bad when you can't give away a $4000 tv

Same with my aunt. She clearly didn't know who we were (she didn't even recognize herself in photos that she'd asked me to keep safe for her), but she kept saying, "It's so good to see you." I've heard from other cousins that she'd ask who they were. But us, she didn't ask, just kept saying how wonderful it was to see our faces.

Chelsea Timmons (@curlygirlconfections) was delivering groceries last weekend in Austin, Texas when her car got stuck on ice. As it became clear she wouldn’t be able to get her car out for some time, and that the roads were unsafe to drive even if she did, Doug Condon and Nina Richardson, the couple whose groceries Timmons was delivering, offered her their guest room for the night. One night then turned into 5. Their home had power and water, and they insisted Timmons stay as long as she needed. As Timmons said, “Every morning after they say - ‘no worries, stay a bit longer’ I go to “my” room and shed tears of joy.”

while I agree this is a great way to help, it reminds me of an episode of Pimp My Ride where they couldn't fix the kids car so they bought him a newer car and pimped it. All fine and dandy but there's the matter of insurance. Giving someone a new(er) car isn't going to help if they can't afford the insurance.

My father in law had been a pilot in Cuba. When he died in 2002 a letter came from a now middle aged nephew. On a local flight, he had engine trouble and had to stay over, so he decided to hike up into the nearby mountains to visit some very poor remote cousins. The nephew was too poor for decent shoes to go to school, so he took his off, and flew home in his socks. Things like that last a lifetime.

My oldest lives next door, he's home less than once a month so we always go to lunch and or supper while he's in. My youngest works 10-12 hours a day, 7 days a week and live a few miles away so we hardly ever get to see each other or go out at all. I miss all the things we all used to do together.

Husband builds wife a special bike after her Alzheimer’s diagnosis.

Bill and Glad Forward have been married for over 50 years, and Bill still says he would do anything for his wife. When her health started to decline, Bill designed “The Bike Chair”- “A special tandem bike for those with limited mobility to enjoy with their caretakers or loved ones.”

“I don’t count it a burden whatsoever to care for her. I need to do everything, from the moment she gets up to the moment she goes to bed, I do absolutely everything. I clean her teether, shower, dress, everything— but it’s a privilege. I count it a great privilege to care for this woman I’ve loved all of these years and continue to love.”

In 6th grade a teacher asked me how I was and I told her, point blank. She kept me after school, not as a punishment but to find out why I gave that answer. I should've learned to not speak my mind but I still make the mistake far too often of speaking my mind. I've definitely ruffled some feathers over the years and even lost one job by someone misinterpreting my comment.

As a kid I loved trains. I always said I was going to be an engineer. Then came adulthood and I discovered unless you have a family connection within the railroad, the chances of getting in is slim to none. I still love trains even though I've never been anything more than the occasional excursion passenger.
