Federally, 1970, Loving vs. Virginia, inter-racial marriage banning was deemed unconstitutional (in that case it was black and white but it applied to other races), in a lot of states the state ban on inter-racial marriage lasted longer

My mum works at the local library. She’s helped people get jobs, start a garden, complete challenges on video games, start an art career, learn to cook, get sober, complete degrees, find housing and change their lives. Libraries (and library workers) are such an underrated cornerstone of society!

Some people say that you can never repay your debt to society or the people you wronged but, unless and until we start to truly believe in rehabilitation, there will be no possible way for people such as this man to have an honest opportunity to put their life back on track and to avoid re-offending.

They definitely have feelings and can read ours too! Reminds me of this one time I was having a heated argument with my parents, involving screaming back and forth. There was a coffee table in between us. My cat who was sleeping in a different room walked in, got on the coffee table and started crying/screaming loudly while looking at me. She’s never been that loud and she definitely has never done something like that before. Her screams were so effective that we actually stopped arguing and ended up totally distracted discussing her unusual behaviour. I’m not sure if she was “saving” me thinking I was in trouble or saving my parents but it sure did work!

My cat wakes me up most mornings by standing the bedroom doorway yowling. Occassionally he wakes me during the night by gently pawing my face or neck while quietly meowing. One time recently, I awoke being aware I'd been agitated and talking in my sleep. Upon reflection, I realized I've been deeply asleep everytime he has done that. I'm now pretty sure he's waking me when I'm having a bad dream.

My mother passed away last November. This week I had a horrible nightmare about her. I woke up in a panic, crying my eyes out, even hyperventilating. My cat jumped into my lap, rested his head on my chin, one paw on each side of his neck... A REAL cat hug.

I'm so sorry for your loss. My dad passed away in 2023. My kitty both mourned his loss because they loved each other and also comforted me and my mom and looked after us. She started sleeping on top of me in the months after his passing, and now she does it most nights.

Cats are so sensible little creatures. On christmas I had several seizures and my partner told me that both cats tried to comfort me during the incidents and when I gained conciousness again. One (the least aggressive cat I know) tried to fight the emergency doc/nurses because I didn't want to go to the hospital (I hate hospitals). Partner said they had to physically restrain the cat and patch up some scratches the main nurse got. 😅 I'm sorry nurse Marie. I hope you got the chocolates.

Cats are the coolest. This coming from a dog owning family. Saw this one video where a guy would plop down on his bed and the cat would do the same exact move. Always puts a smile on my face.

I get migraines and even with medication I cannot get rid of it until I sleep. For me medication just means I sleep less and it actually goes away. My sweet girl will stay with me almost the entire time. She will meet my hubby at the door when he comes home and demands he fallow her to check on me. But after that she gets pissed if he comes back to check on me and wake me up. If he just opens the door and looks in without waking me, she gets up and sit on the corner of the bed between the door and me. If he wakes me up, she will jump down and she makes this demanding sound that the tone somehow doesn't hurt me, but is very determined that he fallow her out of the room.

All of my cats have been loving sweeties who would run to meet me when I came home and snuggle up a storm. One time I was renting a split-level place, and my cat Dickens would run upstairs to look out the window when he heard my car pull in, then run downstairs to greet me at the door. Then we would go up to my room, where he jumped on the bed, and I would lean toward him, and we would head bonk. He was also good at carrying on a “conversation.” Such a character.

This made me recall the word, "Ubuntu"...this is an ancient African word meaning 'humanity to others'. It is often described as reminding us that 'I am what I am because of who we all are' ... it popped into my head after recently coming across a crochet pattern that the creator had named, "Ubuntu" ;)

When I lived in Colorado people always got out to help people in the snow. It was the culture there. You help other people stranded in snow. They also, wisely, stayed miles away from my car with CA plates. Which was good bc I spun out twice my first winter.

Around 1967, I was at the zoo and a small cat followed me around and even followed me through the exit. So I picked it up, stuffed it down my pullover (which it loved) and took it home on the tram. The conductor saw it but didn't ask for another fare ! It became a buddy for our older cat. Well, let's say he tolerated it.

The little guy needs to be taught not to knock on strangers' doors and get into strangers' cars. He was lucky this time to land on a good man but the outcome could have been much worse.

Similar situation with my son, but not nearly as bad; the doctors let me be the one to constantly help him re-establish his breathing. You're not ever the same after something like that. I almost felt like I had stolen something from his Mom, but she needed her recovery also.

My parents did similar for me. Born 6 weeks early. NICU wasn't a thing yet. My tummy couldn't handle 4 oz of milk. UCLA told my parents to allow me to die at home. They sat up for weeks feeding me a tablespoon at a time..until my tummy caught up. I'm 60 now.

My mom went into labor with me, over 3 months early. My mom was admitted to an excellent hospital in Boston, where they tried to stop the contractions/labor from progressing. She was in labor with me for 8 days and I was born in a clean bedpan, with no one else but her roommate, in the room. I was extremely underdeveloped and rushed to NICU, weighing 1 kg/ 2 lbs, 2.5 oz and 13 in/ 33 cm long. I was so small, that even preemie clothes were too big and I wore Cabbage Patch Dolls clothes. I'll be 40, later this year. 💪🏻

It also teaches them about death. That's why it's u usual to start with things like hamsters, which don't live very long before getting a dog or cat. It teaches important lessons about loss, hopefully before they lose someone c!ose.

Someone who had a change of circumstances that didn't allow them to keep their beloved pet -- a move to a nursing home, a move to a foreign country, death of the owner with no one able to take the animal -- in times like these, the shelter can be a refuge, and in this case the critter found someone new to love.

A teacher on the reservation I grew up on had an Alsation (sp?) and he was so protective of us 4-6yr old kids! He'd play with us and if anyone who he didn't know came towards us? A low small tiny warning growl as he stood in between us and them at a distance from them. If we knew them? We'd go say hi and he'd come with us, sniff them as we'd say hello etc... PJ was the besterest protective boi ever! 💜💜💜💜💜💜 (He never ever bit anyone btw!)

As I got older, I began to interpret "Sweet Dreams" as being about S&M or darker ("Some of them want to abuse you/ Some of them want to be abused"), especially after Marilyn Manson's version. I found out not to long ago, however, that the song was written by Stewart to Lennox after they had spent their last dime getting to a gig only to find not a single person had braved bad weather to come. The refrain ("Hold your head up...") came from his determination to make it someday despite seemingly dismal odds. The abuse lines only refer to not being brought down by scummy music industry people.

I remember walking on a path in suburban DC and the most glorious double rainbow popped up from behind golden clouds, and all these natives (mostly exercise walkers) kept passing me, totally ignoring both it and me staring at the sky. I tried too many times to day, "look at that rainbow" because I couldn't believe I couldn't find one person interested. I know in my home, famous for jaded people, I could've gotten anyone who wasn't running late to stop and stare. That was one of several incidents that led me to conclude most of the DC population is utterly dead inside.

I stopped on a road to look at 6 deer in a field. The person behind me honked and was wondering why I stopped in the middle of the block. I rolled down my window and pointed to the field. I started driving and he stayed there looking at the deer!

To those who doubt? Downvote this? A girl who was 9-ish, she was the daughter of a family friend and they were staying with us for two weeks on holiday. There was another kid her age who lived down the road from us who was deaf. I knew some sign language, such as "hi!" so taught her what I knew but she wanted to be able to play out with him and talk so I took her to the library to see how we could both learn basic sign language........ Gosh this though! Watching them sign "I do"? 💜💜💜

That crow will watch over your child where ever he goes in town. They are fiercely loyal and protective. They will bring "Gifts" to exchange for food or water, or to show "affection". As CeeCee said yes gangs of crow can hunt you or protect you. Your child has unlocked a very unique human experience that I hope to experience myself one day. Xoxo

Crows are actually pretty smart animals, they will always remember how a human treats them and treats them the same way back kinda like how cats bring dead mice and birds to their owners, as a token of appreciation

I don't know how they know, but researchers say cats bring their humans dead birds and rodents because they think we're not very bright, so they're helping to feed us.

in the early 80s, i was a very young teen. my uncle, dad's sister's husband, was a rhodes scholar and a famous shakespearen scholar in his youth. during this time, he was in his 80s with alzheimers. remember visiting him in his care home with his wife and my mom. he would look up at her with so much joy but could not talk. his expression was, "i know you but i don't know you. all i know is that you bring me joy and love when i see you." so sad to see a mind like that wither away.

My maternal Grandma lived to be 101...at her 100th birthday celebration, we sat together for the meal & cake.. As we chatted, she asked my name & how we knew each other...She politely acknowledged that she didn't remember my name, but said, "But, I do know that I love you" --- One of my most treasured memories of her. As a career nurse, with many of my years working memory care, this was a treasure...because I'd always encouraged families to rest assured, that their loved ones DO remember...just not always in the ways we'd expect.

In Italy life saving medications are free, my neighbor has two sons with hemophilia who receive each about 20,000 euros worth of medications per month. Insulin is free too. Hospitals are free. Of course those who have a job pay taxes which include healthcare, but if you're jobless healthcare is free. We pay small fees for visits, exams and dr**s. I' m actually in my 6th year after breast cancer and everything is free, from lab tests and exams to d***s, surgery, chemo. I lost my job and was assigned a pension due to legal disability

I'm a dog botherer and whenever I get to pet a dog when I'm out I thank the dog, usually telling them that they made my day, first and then I thank the owner. I pet cats too but I see fewer of them in the "wild" so I'm lucky to have my own boy at home whose belly is always open for petting and raspberries.

My mam has a similar mindset. Has never drove in her life, walks everywhere, and spends all of the holidays she has on her partners farm in the Lake District area of England. She's aways said, if the day comes that she can no longer walk, to just 'Put her down like a sick dog'.

My Dad was 74 before he got his first pair of adult size left hand pair of scissors. Before that they really weren't available. He already had dementia by that time so he never really got to use them, but it still makes me smile to remember how he would jokinglly (and proudly) pull them out the drawer and offer them to me when I needed a pair, before passing me the righthanded pair. It took me way to long to realize that his weird habit of cutting wrapping paper with a pen knife (another memory I cherish) was because he didn't have a proper comfortable pair of scissors to use.

I can't believe some libraries still do that to kids. I remember when I was young, I got a 5-minute lecture from the librarian because I owed a week's worth of fines and how selfish and inconsiderate it was to keep a book that someone else might be waiting for. It was Peter Pan. The book was already more than 60 years old at the time, so it's not like I was hogging some hot bestseller.

Lovely story, but I hate when people say "he was supposed to die by ..." or "the doctor gave me ... years". He wasn't SUPPOSED to die, he was EXPECTED to die. The doctor doesn't GIVE someone 2 years, the doctor EXPECTS you to have 2 years (or rather: makes an educated guess, because it's really hard to predict).

It doesn't rain much in Southern California where I live. But when it does you see people just staring out windows and doors at the sky. Rain can bring people together sometimes.

my nanas cat ( which was all of our cat really when I was helping take care of her and staying there) who just actually passed, would bother any man that came to the house for anything. if they sat down he'd be on their lap lol. One particular time though we had the cable guy over running a new cable in my wall. This guy is pulling wire and this cat is right in front of him rolling on his belly trying to get rubs the whole time. H e took up all the space between the cable guy and the wall.

We had carpet installed throughout our home last fall, and at the same time, plumbers ripping up our basement floor to replace an old line that was causing a terrible smell. My dog Jimmy was in heaven with all of his new friends. He'd sit with the carpet guys while they did the detail work, getting pets and praise and greet the plumbers whenever they emerged from "dat bad place". It was a full week of fun, then nothing. Thank God our backroom ceiling came down during the Thanksgiving blizzard - he really can't wait for the next work crew.

Santa Claus is real, because Santa is not a person. Santa is a state of being, a mindset of being willing to give to others. To give gifts, to give time, to give love. Santa is all of us, if we choose to be.

Once heard a quote that children don't say don't have the capacity to judge things as being abnormal/unusual until someone points it out to them. Point being, this lovely little girl asked a very smart, developed question. This is something that adults should consider. Why lose the desire to be curious and learn new things as opposed to being a know nothing know-it-all with no capacity or desire?

I'll do you one better. There are republican politicians that deliberately and pointedly turned DOWN federal funding to get their kids free school meals, saying they didn't want to teach children relying on the government for handouts. Know this and know it well friends; there is no low, no level of indecency, no height of cruelty christians/conservatives/Republicans won't try to reach. And they are our family, friends and neighbors. Act accordingly. I'm done treating Republicans as anything but the trash they are.
