Didn’t Expect Much Putting Out A Sign. My Neighborhood Is Slowly Putting Out The Same Message In Solidarity
I know it's not much in the grand scheme of the things but I put out a sign in my lawn to send a message to others my opinion that this isn't normal, that this is not okay and that empathy is the path towards the great. I was not sure how my neighbors would respond given that no one really puts out political signs here. My neighbor's showed up though! They put out their own and everyday I see another house with a sign. I know, I know... it's just a sign. It's not much. It's not enough... It's not going to fix anything. But in a diverse community, seeing this means a lot that we are all standing together in solidarity.

It’s not difficult to be the pleasant neighbor that everyone wants to have. In fact, it is found to be a key to boosting a person’s well-being. A 2023 Gallup survey found that individuals who regularly greet their neighbors tend to be happier.
Gallup’s research director for national health and well-being, Dan Witters, specified that the “sweet spot” would be greeting six people “regularly.”

Sweet Dog Mojo
This is Mojo. He and his sister Lilly just moved into the neighborhood. Lilly is very friendly, but Mojo is a little nervous around new people. As a result, he would bark at everyone who passed by his house. To help him overcome his fears and to show everyone he’s truly a good boy, his human put out a sign and a bucket of balls to help him make friends. Within one hour, a neighbor walking by stopped and played fetch with Mojo. “It’s worked so well and the neighborhood loves it,” his human told us. He no longer tries to chase the mailman either. He brings him a ball and puts his front two paws on the fence, waiting for pets and for him to throw the ball.

Witters didn’t specify how often “regularly” is. As he stated, it would be up to the person, as long as they maintain the habit. Witters adds that a simple nod or acknowledgment has more than just a social benefit.
“It’s probably fair to postulate that the rise in financial well-being due to greeting neighbors is because people with greater levels of financial well-being are more likely to be living in a safer area where they are more comfortable being out and about,” he explained.

The Ramp The Firefighters Are Building For My Wife Who Has ALS
My wife was diagnosed with ALS in November of 2024. I won’t go into details. She is the nicest person you could ever meet, I feel lucky to know her let alone marry her. We have 2 kids/teens and we live on the north shore of Mass. Make no mistake this disease is devastating, but the kindness. support and generosity we have received from the community has been overwhelming. In a good way. I will spend the rest of my life trying to pay everyone back. This ramp is an example ,some firefighters from Lynn and some people from our town decided the fundraise and build a much needed ramp for our house. Even in the worst of times there is still good in this world, I’m looking at it right now out my front window, all I can say is thank you and I will be paying this back in one way or another.

On a related note, every homeowner or home renter ought to know where the water main shutoff is for their home. Its usually near the property line closest to the road, as that's where a utility worker would have fast access to it if needed. Its most helpful to know for people that live in a house because there could be a time where pipes burst inside your home and you want ALL the water turned off until you can repair the pipes. You also need to buy a certain wrench from a hardware store to turn the handle on the valve. I believe there is a YouTube video on where to find the shutoff valve and what tool is needed

When it’s really hot outside, I always offer service and repair people, mail carriers, FedEx/UPS delivery people all the cold drinks they want. I usually keep a variety stocked up in the fridge, so they can have a choice. My husband works in a job like that, and he loves it when a customer offers him a cold drink on a hot day, so I try to be like those customers whenever I can.

I was raised in a small cul-de-sac with 9 houses. People somehow knew eachother from beforehand when we more or less simultaneously moved in. Scenes like this often happened. One guy opening a beer in his garage, other guys seeing it and coming over... My mum setting up a lawn chair at the end of the driveway (eventhough we had a beautiful backyard) and started knitting - pretty soon to be followed by at least 3 other ladies knitting or crochetting... Clearing snow in the street which ended up with mounts of snow on the side, all the guys together, bottles of all kinds of booze in the snowmounts... the aftermath took longer than the actual clearance... We moved in 'only' in 1969 when I was 3 but hell, does this seem long ago.

So Our Neighbor Just Gifted Us $200
It was our next door neighbor since my wife saw one of them knocking on our front door while we were cleaning. We obviously went over and thanked them, introducing ourselves since we hadn't talked to them before. Apparently they're relatively new to the neighborhood and wanted to give us a holiday gift.

My previous neighbour (she's since passed away, RIP) baked me cookies and slices regularly for helping her with a fencing issue with our adjoining neighbours. She was an amazing baker, by the way. She would also take my bins in if I hadn't got to them due to finishing work late, and we'd have good conversations about her grandkids, life; just anything, really. She was the best neighbour I've had. The neighbour I have now is the one that avoids introvert me (trust me love; feeling's mutual, lol) and won't leave the house until she can hear I've gone. But she's quiet and otherwise innocuous. Only thing I could think of to 'complain about' would be she leaves bags of dog poop by her front door, where they get baked in the sun and stink. But obviously that's on the lower end of neighbour issues.

My two neighbours and I have an ongoing competition to bring the wheelie bins back in. They go out on Tuesday evening, and the bin men arrive about 7-7.15am. The first neighbour up is usually no. 7, and he started bringing in ours and no. 5's, so no.5 and I got him a little "Bin Angel" trophy made. Its now turned into a very silly race lying in wait for the bin men and bringing the bins in, and the Bin Angel changes hands occasionally and is proudly displayed on the doorstep.

I spent a month in the hospital in the spring and during that time, my husband developed pneumonia and was hospitalized on the floor above mine. It’s just the two of us in our mid-60s and our two senior dogs; our kids are grown and living in different towns. Our neighbours were fantastic! The woman next door came over every day to feed the dogs and take them for walks. She even brought her radio over and left it playing on the floor so the dogs wouldn’t be lonesome! Then a group of six of them brought their lawn mowers over and cut the grass on our half-acre yard, knowing that my husband would be out there doing it as soon as he got out of the hospital. We live on a cul-de-sac so everyone knows everyone else’s business, and it was lovely to see them all come over to help! We’ve lived here for 21 years and always been blessed with great neighbours!

We were on holiday last week and we took a couple of metal detectors with us for searching the beach, we rarely turn up anything exciting but the joy is in the hunt for our two children y’know? If we do find anything there’s always a conversation about how the things got there, turns out they have fertile imaginations 😀 aliens are often involved! This past week our two 14 & 12 gained a following of little helpers, probably 5/6 years old, and just like that us adults became surplus to requirements, our two took them on a mini adventure around the nearby beach, obviously well within our sights, they dug up pebbles, sea glass, in fact loads of things that weren’t found by the detectors, a few bits of metal were found but they amassed quite a collection of objects that we deemed ‘valuable’. It was a joy to watch them share the simple fun of being children, we chatted with their parents, shared parenting tales and a brew, the children built a pile of treasure. Simple stuff but great fun.

We got a puppy. Had a hole in our garden fence. (No way puppy couldn't reach it... yet, and would not be unsupervised while toilet training.) Our retired neighbours met her when we were out helping her learn to pee out side. The husband mentioned the hole. We told him we had everything ready to repair it the following weekend. He was out there repairing it an hour later. We now have a deliberate small hole in the fence as they love her. She pops her head through for fusses and to drop toys for fetch, as she loves them too.

We got a puppy. Had a hole in our garden fence. (No way puppy couldn't reach it... yet, and would not be unsupervised while toilet training.) Our retired neighbours met her when we were out helping her learn to pee out side. The husband mentioned the hole. We told him we had everything ready to repair it the following weekend. He was out there repairing it an hour later. We now have a deliberate small hole in the fence as they love her. She pops her head through for fusses and to drop toys for fetch, as she loves them too.

These are actually super depressing because most of them have been posted on BP for years, meaning neighbors do so few positive things that there is little new content in this area.

Or BP is just lazy and recycling old content. I choose to believe there is plenty of good in this world, and the website I had to literally switch browsers to use without turning off JavaScript (to turn off the ads) is just lazy and wants our ad revenue.
