From Homeless And Unemployed (26) To A Surgical Assistant (40)
Was roaming the streets and eating scraps for years, with my only goals in life being finding a bench to loiter on. Couldn't find a job no matter how hard I tried, and not having any skills in life or family (was raised in foster care) surely didn't help.
One day while looking for a restroom to relieve myself, I stumbled across a college that just so happened to have an open house enrollment going on, and figured that was the perfect excuse to enter the building and freeload off their toilets.
Little did I know however, was that the universe had other plans for me. A guidance counselor had approached me and asked if I was here for open house. Being embarrassed to admit my true intentions, I told him I was and ended up joining him as he regaled the countless opportunities presented before me.
I was intrigued by their surgical technology program, and decided to give it a shot. Needless to say, I had finally found my passion in life. Went to school for 18 months, plus an additional 4 months of internships, all while homeless. Upon graduation, I was offered a permanent job at the hospital I interned at, and after 4 years, had enough cases to take the CSFA exam.
I have been a surgical assistant since, and remind myself everyday just how fortunate my life turned out. Now that I'm an old man, I feel I have enough experience to encourage others that it's never too late in life to strive for better. You just have to have patience, persistence, and passion.

Great achievement. While next to homelessness, I had to work my way out of having a criminal conviction and six months in jail. It was rough. Took me a decade. Still not back to where I was but I'm finally out of working government and into a nonprofit. Which is where I always wanted to be.

The unknown can be intimidating, and that’s why many of us are change-averse. Moving across the country, starting a new job, breaking up with your partner or having a child will all come with many challenges. It’s often easier to simply stay on the same path and try to stop wondering about all of the “what ifs” that pop into your head.

"I lost my best (cat) friend last year, had him 22 years out of my 27 years of life.. told myself I can’t have another kitty until I’m ready because I was so torn up over him passing still. Talked to my mom the morning before I found her & told her “ugh I miss having a kitty, I miss the sweet soft cuddles”.. cut to 4 hours later and I was blessed with that sweet baby."

Or you became a parent and had to focus 100% of your energy on your little ones.

There is a High Chair that I walk by, not a public structure. It is a ten foot (or so) tall high chair. It was sanctioned, and we have a lot of public art in Santa Fe NM. I love it and wonder how many people walk by it and don't even notice.

There are some pretty adorable photos of animals featured on this list as well. And we all know that kittens and puppies are cute enough to melt your heart into a huge puddle. But they’re also extremely time consuming and a lot of work. Raising a puppy means constantly monitoring them to ensure they haven’t pottied on the floor or chewed up your wallet. And kittens are notorious for scratching anything they can get their paws on or climbing to incredible heights.

It can be sad to realize that your pet will never be a baby again, but seeing them grow up not only allows owners to build beautiful bonds with them. It also finally gives pet parents a break, as they won’t have to worry about keeping an eye on their furry friend every minute of the day. And the longer you and your pet live together, the better you’ll be able to understand and predict their behavior. The two of you will form a beautiful language of your own to communicate with!

I work in a steel mill and a little more than a year and a half ago, I saw three kittens run out of the garbage can in a parts storage room when I passed through late at night on my way to the locker room. I successfully trapped them and their feral 3 y/o mother. They were all males and about four months old and terrified, so I knew it would be difficult finding them homes. So, I kept them and now all three are two years old and cuddlers. Two are almost twins in markings (grey striped) and polydactyl. The other is a beautiful black kitty. Mom still won't let me pet her, but she likes being around me and sleeps just barely out of reach. She will take food from my fingers, especially cottage cheese. Eventually, I'll wear her down and get some pets. It's literally the best part of my day coming home to them.

Just one thing: when you bottle-feed a kitten or puppy, you need to position it on its stomach, to prevent aspiration pneumonia. Look at pictures of mama cats feeding their babies. The photo above is wrong. If you feed a kitten in that position you'll probably k**l it.

In general, there’s no reason for us to fear change. It can bring about personal growth, new opportunities and a level of happiness you never even knew you could achieve. Go to that pottery class, start learning a new language, don’t be scared to travel alone and start baking that sourdough even if you’re terrified of how it will turn out. We can never grow without forcing ourselves out of our comfort zones.

From Abandoned At A Cemetery To Thriving! Meet Anubis
I’m a photographer and went out 3 hours away from where I stay to go take pictures! I stopped at a couple parks to photograph and then came across a cemetery. I went down the road and found this puppy on the dirt road. No houses were around just a cemetery and so I assumed he was dumped and the condition he was in showed he was not cared for. He followed me around as I called out to hear if there was a person around. No answer, so I took him home.
He has changed my world. I brought him home and convinced my Ma to let me keep him. Meet Anubis. My trusty little man, and soul dog. I’ve been out on dirt roads photographing for 11 years and have not come across a puppy! I honestly believe he was sent to me. I was meant to find him, that day I wasn’t wanting to go out til my therapy told me to go out. Grateful is all I can say.

My Japanese Grandma Who Survived World War 2
She has since passed away but had a wild life. Crazy to think about everything she saw and went through when the bombs were dropped. She survived fire bombs by going underground beneath her school. I miss her everyday!

So happy for you....my daughter was just turning 6yrs old when she was hospitalized for leukemia....it was a five year chemo journey, then 5 more years of check ups and bloodwork...but today she is a healthy 43 yr old wonderful Mom to a severely disable boy with brittle bone disease....they can talk about feelings really well....

When a rough Arizona summer hit, she decided she’d had enough of being outside, and trusted me to bring her in. I gave her a good brushing, cleaned her long fur with some dry shampoo, and there was a completely different cat underneath all the grime and tangles. Two years later, she purrs when I feed her, but still enjoys the outdoors viewed through a window, from her perch.

We have a neighborhood stray cat with the same ear marking. And I had never been in a community of people so communal. Every house in her territory takes care of her in different ways. I’m the treats house, there’s a food and a water house. And my next door neighbor went so far to build her a dog house as her permanent location. (I live in Arizona so it’s scorching hot here) but just the fact all these people, whom I don’t know very well, all come together for their love. She’s got like 10 families!

My 40 yr old son insisted he needed to get surgery to lose 100lbs.....I was so shocked after 6 months.....he did lose the 100lbs and I didn't recognize him even though we watched the transformation in person....I'm still not sure I like it...but he's very happy and still pretty handsome...so...whatev....

I have a calamondin in my backyard! They're a cross between a kumquat and a mandarin orange. Their fruits are like tiny little oranges. The peel is thin, edible, and sweet. The flesh is sour just like a kumquat! They're delicious. Sometimes I eat the peel and the flesh separate and sometimes I just eat the whole fruit :)

My kumquat is fruiting after several years without even any flowers. It seems they need a lot of fertilizer, though there may be other factors at play.

I have a stuffed German Shepherd I've had since I was 5 (I'm 43 now.) His name is Chace (I couldn't spell, lol) - I know what brand he is, so I went on eBay a few years back and found a new-condition clone of him.. At the end of May, my cat-loving Belgian Malinois, Fenring, found two tiny stray kittens hiding under a table in my backyard. I extricated them and got badly bitten and scratched for my trouble XD After determining they were alone (security cams showed they had been walking around my property alone, no mom in sight) I started getting them vet care and gave them tons of love, food, and patient attention. Just a few weeks later they are happy, fat, healthy babies who start purring before I even start petting them XD The brown tabby is named Joseph and the tux girl is named Spicecake (thus named because she was the far more hissy and "spicy" kitten at first.) Just a few weeks of love transformed two dirty, skinny, wormy, flea-riddled, terrified kittens into fat, content little blorps XD joseph_and...0babe7.jpg

My rescued Thoroughbred mare, Princess Madeline. The first pic is when she arrived at our barn after bouncing around in the auction/slaughter pipeline. Her nose is buried in my shoulder and she was emotionally exhausted, thin, and had separation anxiety (can you blame her?). Second pic is a year later. In a few days, I've had her for 14 years. She is so well mannered and healthy now lives on a 150 acre farm with magnificent pastures and plenty of other retired horses as friends. Living her best life! 2011-Maddi...76-png.jpg
