We love pets and try to show it every way we can. So if you keep asking yourself “Do dogs know we love them?”, be sure they, as well as any other pet you share your home with, absolutely do know how you feel about them.

But as is common with every relationship, we want to know if the love is mutual. It is not like we would love pets less if they were to be indifferent, but it is always nice and heartwarming to know that the creature you love the most loves you back. To put your mind at ease, we collected a list of some of the ways pets can show you their feelings. If you are not sure how to tell the signs of their love, keep reading.

To begin with, if you are a good owner and treat your pet like a family member, giving them all the love and care they deserve, they will definitely love you back. Whether you adopt a pet or buy from a breeder, make sure you love them unconditionally and show it at every opportunity. Your pet will be very grateful for that and shower you with puppy love (even if they don’t belong to the canine family).

Does your pet have any specific ways of showing you their love? Tell us in the comments what your smart pet did to make you understand their feelings about you. And don’t forget to tell your pet today how much you love them.

Called “kneading,” this behavior comes from kittens inducing milk from their mother and means that even as an adult, your cat feels as warm with you as it did with its mother.

Cats do things like this too, with people they really love. If I’m sick, I will have at least one, if not all, the cats up on the bed keeping me company, plus the dog in his bed or on the floor next to my bed. A few years ago, I had tendon surgery on one of my legs, and had to stay in bed for four weeks. The entire time, I had at least one, if not an ever changing combination of up to all the four of the cats we had at the time, plus the dog, in my room 24/7. They’d take turns to leave to go to the bathroom or eat, so I was never left completely alone. Even when my husband would keep me company when he got home from work and all weekend, in between keeping house and feeding everyone, including me, there was still at least one animal in the room with us.

He'll get all excited, looks for me and also gets sad if I don't show up (soon). I've asked my friends to try and not mention my nickname if they talk about me, because I don't want him to get sad. He also recognizes my car (or at least cars with a similar shape and colour, thinking it's me) and the noise I make coming up the stairs to his human's apartment (if I wear a specific pair of shoes).
