Did you know that in the 1980s, there was a chimp at the Belgrade Zoo that escaped not once but twice? His name was Sami, and he became famous in 1988 when a photographer snapped a picture of him and the zoo director, Vukosav Bojovic, "conversing" on the roof. Bojovic attempted to coax the animal to come back, resulting in a pretty sweet moment.

Many do. 'Being a royal' is one of the very few jobs of power, that include training. Nearly all the others (politicians especially) are just winging it.

I was pressurised to have a termination by midwives as there was a high likelihood of Downs. My son is now 22 years old, is sweet, kind, generous, works full-time, owns his flat, runs marathons, looks after his grandmother and is autistic.

What a terrible end for this marine who saved the kitten. It would surely have died if he hadn't taken care of it. A happy ending, in exchange, for the tiny kitty. It's a terrible shame that her owner is no longer there. I wish this little cat a lot of happiness with the other marine.

There was a big problem with American GIs leaving behind their pregnant Asian girlfriends/wives during WW2/Korea/Vietnam because mixed babies weren't accepted in those societies and were ostracized. Many times the women didn't know her GI's full name or his birthday, or really anything about him, and many Amerasians were abandoned (or worse). At least THIS GI stepped up to the plate and many DID acknowledge their Asian families but finally the US government made it easier for Amerasians to get to the USA when they passed the Amerasian Homecoming Act.

So, what happened to Sami the chimpanzee? During his first escape, Mr. Bojovic took Sami by the hand, put him in his car, and drove him back to the zoo. The chimp had made it to Students' Square. His second attempt at an escape didn't end that peacefully – the zookeepers had to use tranquilizer darts.

Sadly, Sami passed away in 1992, and he lived in Belgrade Zoo for a total of four years from 1988. In 1996, the Zoo erected a sculpture in honor of Sami, which still stands there to this day. Newspapers referred to Sami as a "dissident," as many Yugoslavians found his captures and detention at the Zoo poetically similar to their own lives under communism.

Replying to Brian Droste. Orangutans are peaceful apes, never looking for a fight. If you treat an orangutan peacefully, it'll behave peacefully. Don't try this yourself! You need to understand how orangutans think. Chimpanzees are very different and often use violence to settle issues.

The 1948 photo of a man begging his wife not to divorce him is a real piece of history. It started making the rounds on Reddit in 2024, but the historian who uncovered this photo, Jeff Nichols, talked to Business Insider about it. The couple in the photograph is Steve and Anna Strack. Anna was the one who filed for divorce, citing "habitual drunkenness" as the reason.

In those times, spouses had to give the court a considerable reason for going through with the divorce. Yet, in Chicago, divorces were pretty common. According to Nichols's research, the apparently lax divorce laws were a regional joke, prompting people to make jokes such as: "Oh, people in Chicago just get divorced as a problem to have."

Anna Strack also talked with the Chicago Tribune about her divorce at the time, since the photo was printed in the publication. She told them that she would think over her decision. However, the 1950 census showed them as a divorced couple, and Anna lived with her parents and their 4-year-old son and worked as a packer at a gum factory.

Some say that the photograph of Frederick Douglass with his wife, Helen Pitts, at Niagara Falls was taken during their honeymoon. We can't tell exactly, but we know that their marriage was quite controversial back in the day. Helen was the second wife of Frederick Douglass, the first one being Anna Murray Douglass for 40 years.

After her passing, Douglass fell into a deep depression. Helen is said to have helped him regain his good spirits. However, Douglass's kids opposed the marriage, and Helen's family didn't like her marrying a Black man. The public didn't react favorably, either: some accused Douglass of "forgetting his cause" by marrying a white woman; others denounced the 21-year age gap between the spouses.

Although the world prefers to ignore the fact, there are many, many Jews and Arabs who work together in Israel today. We respect each other, admire each other, and many of us remain good friends even if we no longer work together. Live here and you'll see that the problem is not Bibi, but rather the Muslim extremists who would like to see the Jews disappear off the map.

Thank you, Adrienne! The issue is not Jews and Arabs getting along but the fact that some terrorists and even gouvernments like Iran have a first constitution of wiping out Jews and Israel. Nobody is denying Gazans their right of existence. But let us not identify all Gazans with Hamas terrorists! Hamas terrorises everyone, including their own people. And I, myself, would have no idea how to negotiate anything with a party that has only one goal in life, and that is to destroy me. Of course, like in every people there are good people and f*ck people, so also with Jews and Palestinians alike. Here in the Netherlands Geert Wilders called every moroccan a "kutmarokkaan", well, Geert is a "kutnederlander", I could go on with a list of presidents that do NOT represent their people. Let us not judge people by their etnicity or representatives, but by their own deeds.

actually we do not know if there are both Jews and Arabs, as the original picture was never identified with who it was. Now 5 male and 2 of the female figures are dressed in what Jews there wore at the time, 1 of the men is wearing a Tarbush, which while traditionally arab, Jews from Syria did wear them as well, and of the women 1 is dressed in what could be arab and 2 are dressed in non-descript garb. Some people have used the Tarbush on that one man and the middle woman whose dress could be arab, as a way to say it is both Jews and Arab together. However we can only confirm its Jews, with the others possibly being Jews from Syria who moved to Jaffa (which many did at that time) as well

antisemitism was a word specifically coined to mean Jews, Antisemites created that term as a term to justify their hate against Jews, and jews only. appropriating the term to weaken its meaning is a form of antisemitism itself

Mr Chidwick, of Dover, Kent, said: "The picture was taken by my father who was serving aboard HMS Sphinx while on armed patrol off the Zanzibar and Mozambique coast. They caught quite a few slavers and those particular slаves that are in the pictures happened while he was on watch. That night a dhow sailed by and the slаves were all chained together. He raised the alarm and they got them on to the ship and got the chains knocked off them. They then questioned them and sent a party of marines ashore to try to track the slаve traders down. They caught two of them and I believe they were of Arabic origin. My father thought the slаve trade was a despicable thing that was going on, the slаves were treated very badly so when they got the slavers they didn't give them a very nice time."

A piece of history that people deserve to know is about the Black women who served in the U.S. military during WWII. We might think that most of them were nurses, but there was an all-Black female unit stationed overseas. The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion was created to deal with the postal worker shortage. They sorted millions of letters and packages that families sent to their loved ones on the war front. In 2022, the former members of the battalion received Congressional Gold Medals.

The Yugoslav partisans are the only WW2 resistance movement to have liberated its country all on its own. The badassest of badasses.

We all should be so lucky to live until 100 years old. Jeanne Calment was even luckier: she lived until 122. She was born in 1875 in France and passed away in 1997. A Russian mathematician, Nikolay Zak, suggested that Calment actually met her maker earlier and that her age record is actually fake.

According to Zak, Calment passed away in 1934, and the woman everyone thought was Jeanne was actually her daughter, Yvonne. That's why he posited that her grandson called her "maman" and lived with her supposed son-in-law. Zak argued that Yvonne chose to pretend to be her mother to avoid paying inheritance taxes and to have a roof over her head permanently.

However, many experts shut down ideas about Calment's falsified age. Although they admit that a person living until 122 is extremely unlikely from a biological standpoint, they note that perhaps too much had to be faked in Jeanne's case. "Any deception on Madame Calment's part would have required extraordinary prescience and the connivance of surviving relatives and we should banish such thoughts from our minds," gerontologist Tom Kirkwood wrote in his 1991 book, "Could she be a fraud?"

"As the pictures show, Joe had to face the usual mayhem of parenting—crying children, diaper changes, early wake-ups, a sink full of dishes, and the inexplicable random crisis (why is Spencer playing with nails in the hallway?) The photos feel like they could be stills from a 1950s sitcom. And at the end of this episode Joe learned the valuable lesson about domestic labor. He told LIFE after his weekend with the kids, “I feel like I’ve been on a 25-mile hike with a full pack…I wouldn’t change jobs on a bet.”"

You would be surprised if you lived in the US to learn most of us get along just fine. My neighbors are Jordanian, and the kindest and most generous people we've ever known. Patrons at my gym are probably half black, half white, and everyone gets along great, lots of fist bumping and friendly faces. The community next to ours is largely Indian (meaning India, not Native American). We walk our dog there and look forward to chatting it up with the people we see there regularly. They are super nice and love to talk. And this is in a state that leans conservative, in a fairly small town. I know, boring, right? That's why you never hear about it. Media thrives on negative stuff, literally that's how they make money, and some people lap it up and apply it across the board to 350 million people spread across nearly 3000 miles. Cue the down arrows and snarky comments, whatever, but I hope you have a great day!

About a week ago, I was criticized by an Iranian here in the US for not supporting Trump's support of Iranian protestors. I had to tell him that US interference put the Shah in charge and caused the revolution in the first place and now look what it led to. Who wants to go down that road again? I support the protestors, but they need to put their own people in charge to have a stable government.

This is what's happening right here, right now, in the US. If the Orange Terror has his way, we're looking at a theocratic f.a.s.c.i.s.t. dictatorship, and the loss of all the human rights we've spent centuries trying to build. Iran, 1979. US, 2026. It happened there, then. It is happening again here, now. We must not allow it.

The colour photography process involved taking three separate black and white images through three coloured filters (red, green, and blue), and then projecting slides of those three images onto a screen through separate red, green, and blue filters. The Library of Congress has digitized 2,607 of them, using computer image processing to recreate the colours as best they can. Link follows.

P.S. 'In 2004, the Library contracted with Blaise Agüera y Arcas to produce an automated color composite of each of the 1,902 negatives from the high resolution digital images of the glass plate negatives. The software algorithm he developed combines the three images into one, makes minute adjustments to align parts of the image that appear to have moved from exposure to exposure, and applies the appropriate color layer.'

I'd bet that was an extended family. My Mom (born 1919) was one of ten or eleven kids, most of whom also went on to have large families. Our annual family get-together was held at our farm, because we were the only place with enough room. A light turnout was 80 - 100 people. But our pickup softball games were *incredible*!

Britain did not practise racial segregation in the same way as the United States. When Black American soldiers arrived in Britain first, they were treated as fellow servicemen, drank in the same pubs, socialised locally, and in many cases integrated into local communities. British civilians generally judged them on behaviour and character, not skin colour. When white US troops arrived later and attempted to impose Jim Crow style segregation, separate pubs, separate dances, separate treatment, the British reaction was largely hostile to the idea. Many landlords, councils, and local residents simply refused to comply, seeing segregation as offensive and alien to British norms. This caused real friction between British authorities and the US military, and even tension within US units themselves. The result was that segregation often collapsed in practice once it hit British soil. In several places, British establishments explicitly sided with Black soldiers, sometimes banning racists.

Some of you may be as curious as I was about this Jewish photographer: The Jewish photographer who famously photographed Joseph Goebbels was Alfred Eisenstaedt, and he survived the N**i era by fleeing Germany to the U.S., becoming a renowned Life Magazine photographer, known for his iconic images, and lived to be 96, passing away in 1995. He captured the tense portrait of Goebbels at a 1933 League of Nations conference, after which Eisenstaedt and his family emigrated to escape N**i oppression.

'Agfachrome Shot Of A Blonde Lady In Norway, 1943' - right, so that's a German colour film process in German occupied Norway. This is actual photographic evidence of her collaborating with the Názis because only the Názi invaders had access to this technology. Come the end of the war, lots of attractive young Norwegian women ended up deeply regretting having hooked up with German boyfriends. Dagmar Lahlum was identified as one such, and while her boyfriend really was in the German army, he was also English and a double agent working with the Norwegian resistance (he'd been dishonorably discharged from the British army in the early 1930s - you should look him up). Eddie Chapman - loyal to Britain while also being an unrepentant career criminal and, er, quite keen on the ladies. He went back to England leaving Dagmar to suffer undeserved stigma. 'His British Secret Service handlers codenamed him Agent Zigzag in acknowledgement of his erratic personal history.' Links follow.

Photos Of Children Who Didn't Pass The "One Drop" Rule And Were Slaves, Eventually Emancipated In New Orleans, From Harper’s Weekly, 30 Of January Of 1864

The one-drop rule was a legal principle of racial classification that was prominent in the 20th-century United States. It asserted that any person with even one ancestor of Black African ancestry ("one drop" of "black blood") is considered black, It is an example of hypodescent, the automatic assignment of children of a mixed union between different socioeconomic or ethnic groups to the group with the lower status, regardless of proportion of ancestry in different groups. This concept became codified into the law of some U.S. states in the early 20th century. It was associated with the principle of "invisible blackness" that developed after the a history of racial interaction in the South, which had included the hardening of slavery as a racial caste system and later segregation. Before the rule was outlawed by the Supreme Court in the Loving v. Virginia decision of 1967, it was used to prevent interracial marriages and to deny rights and equal opportunities and uphold white supremacy.

In keeping with the principle that one should never attribute to malice that which can adequately be explained by stupidity, I'll be generous and say I think it may be a glitch in the system.

If they were serious about the 'one drop' rule, and given that the human race originated in Africa, that would reduce the free population of the US to exactly zero. Did anyone think this through, or was it just a form of words to keep the little people down ?

Saudi Arabia had slavery legal until 1963, there are an estimated 300,000 slaves in Qatar, 40,000 in Jordan, and over 500,000 in other Arab countries, mostly Africans (some places like Libya they are literal slaves, in Qatar their passports are taken away, and have no rights under the law if they are harmed or abu sed.)

Ben: the Norden Bómb Sight really was very good, but many of the claims were hype from the manufacturer to promote sales. It combined a mechanical computer and autopilot functions - very, very advanced for the time. One even more advanced feature of the B-29 was the air gunnery equipment, which involved more computers and remote controlled gunnery pods: point the gunsight at the target, and the computer ensures that you hit the target - no need for the gunner to judge how much to offset the aiming point. That kit is part of the reason the B-29 development programme cost more than the Manhattan project.

That looks quite tame. We can get a lot messier than that in Blighty. Judging by the tuxedos and evening dresses, this looks like some poshos party at either Oxford or Cambridge.

I didn't think so either, but I went to the original article: "Checking the dates on him and his family... Six children born between 1939 and 1946. William was 53 years old and his wife Ottie was 22 when their twins were born, though neither survived even a month. The children pictured were born in 1940, 1943, and 1944 and the photo is from 1946 when William was, in fact, 60 years old."

The caption's wrong. That plantation continued sugar production into the 1970s. Even after the emancipation proclamation, I get the idea the plantation's workers were mistreated. 'The two original s***e cabins which are on display at Whitney Plantation today were the last workers’ cabins that were still occupied in 1975 when the plantation shut down. ' does not sound good, does it? 🤨 Link follows.

One of the clauses in the treaty allowed nations to convert two under construction battleships or battle-cruisers into aircraft carriers. Both Japan and the USA did this. Lexington and her sister ship Saratoga were originally laid down as battle-cruisers.

If you have a chance, catch the episode of South Park called "All About Mormons" or catch their hysterical Broadway play called "The Book of Mormon." We weren't Mormons. My family moved to Salt Lake City, Utah when I was 10, and I wasn't allowed to transfer to the local Girl Scout troop ("Sorry we are all full"), couldn't make purchases in certain stores, had several apartments lined up to rent until they asked which ward (Mormon church) I was a member of (“Sorry, I just remembered we have someone else we said we would rent it to”), wasn't allowed to be part of several school clubs (yet all the Mormon girls got in, and I had one of the highest grade averages in the school), and several Mormon girls told everyone I was pregnant (sorry - virgin). I dealt with thousands of Mormons in that 15 years and there were in fact some nice ones, but overall I wouldn’t recommend moving there. As for Joseph Smith - if there's a hell, he's there.
