At least with school uniforms, it doesn’t become a fashion show. I know they could be expensive, but it’s better than having to buy new trendy outfits to prevent your kid from being bullied.

Although the designs of many school uniforms here in the UK are less than flattering, I do think they are a good idea to create cohesion and a sense of belonging. Ideally the uniforms should be unisex with shorts, trousers and kilt-like skirts all kids could wear by choice.

School uniform is normal in many countries such as the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, China and Japan. They are often cheaper than letting students wear their own clothes five times a week, there's no confusion about dress codes, they can reduce peer pressure and promote equality. For younger children it can also be safer when they're on school trips by making them easily identifiable.

From a mother uniforms !, they aren’t expensive in uk , and if there is no uniform ,kids get bullied mercilessly, so uniforms solves that issue , glad our schools have them !

Unfortunately school uniforms are often expensive and often from a single supplier dictated by the school. That's why there are uniform banks and government encouraging schools to widen the uniform supplier base.

The problem I have with uniforms is the cost, when I was in school the uniform could only be bought in one particular shop at three to four times the cost of equivalent items from other stores in non-uniform colours, the idea that uniforms reduce bullying is a joke, the high cost meant the poorer families couldn't afford new uniforms every year so kids would come to school in tatty, patched ill-fitting uniforms often handed down from older siblings which resulted in more bullying, not less.

Uniforms are all good and well until the school decides to change it at the last minute. When my youngest daughter was due to start secondary school, my plan was to give her her sister's uniform as it was still in very good condition, and to buy new for my eldest to save money. Two days before the end of term, the school announced that it was changing the ENTIRE uniform. So I ended up having to buy two complete uniform rig outs which cost me hundreds. So much for trying to save money and I was left with my daughter's old uniform which even the charity shops wouldn't take - so wasteful.

A uniform also allows the school staff to immediately identify someone on the school grounds who doesn't belong there.

I'm used to the idea of uniforms as it is common where I grew up. Just... why did the girls have better looking uniforms? We boys just looked like a bunch of trainee dentists or something. Actually, when I worked in nursing homes as a Care Assistant, I just dug up my old school uniform (a decade later!) and wore that because it was pretty much "the suggested outfit". So I'm not against uniforms, but don't make them look so cráppy, huh?
