This has just reminded me of the Eurovision Song Contest in 1993. The Bosnia and Herzegovina group competing had literally had to run across a field to a waiting helicopter whilst snipers fired at them to get out of the country to compete. And then during the voting when it went to Sarajevo for their scores everyone clapped really loudly but then had to ssshhh because you could barely hear the person speaking. It was sort of shocking but also amazing that the spirit of Eurovision was still so strong despite what they had been through.
