While it might seem almost ridiculous to compare, say, the grand canyon or the surface of the moon to an old door-handle, in many ways the way it looks is the result of the same forces, namely, time and just constant, frequent contact with something. The result, in all of the aforementioned cases, is often quite interesting in its own right.

We’ve gathered the best examples of things that have been worn down by use in an interesting way. So get comfortable as you scroll through, upvote your favorites and be sure to share your own thoughts and experiences in the comments below.

I keep their ID tags on top of the containers of my cat's and two dogs' ashes. I do, however, really like your keychain idea. Even with no physical reminders, they are always in our hearts, right?

No, it's the normal ageing process in dogs. Here is my German Shepherd, Ember - the photo on the left is when she was still a puppy (maybe 5-6months old) and the photo on the right is her at 12 years old. She lost almost all of her "normal" GSD markings, including her saddle. She was nearly entirely cream-furred towards the end. ember_pup_...d53e22.jpg ember_pup_to_old_lady-67fc469d53e22.jpg

There’s something undeniably captivating about objects that have been worn down by time. Whether it's a weathered building facade, a scuffed leather coin purse, or a tarnished copper bowl, these items tell stories that pristine, new objects simply can't. They carry the marks of history, the patina of use, and the charm of imperfection.

One reason people find aged items endearing is the sense of nostalgia they evoke. A chipped teacup might remind someone of their grandmother's kitchen, while a faded photograph can transport them back to a cherished moment. These objects serve as tangible links to the past, grounding us in our personal and collective histories.

Moreover, the aesthetic appeal of aged items lies in their uniqueness. The cracks, scratches, and discolorations are not flaws but features that add character. In a world of mass-produced perfection, the individuality of a worn object stands out, offering a sense of authenticity and depth.

There is a cemetery that is in Spencer, OK that sits across the street from the one that my family is buried at named Kolb that was founded in 1907. The part that is really interesting is that there are headstones that predate the Oklahoma Land Run in 1889. Which, is long before Kolb was named, established and designated as an "Official" cemetery. Another interesting fact is that Baylee Almon, who was killed in the Murrah bombing in 1995 is buried there. The infamous photo of the Firefighter carrying the baby in his arms and appeared all over magazines and the news is that little girl. To this day the Firefighter Chris Fields and Baylee's Mother Aren Almon, are close friends and have stayed in contact, since the Murrah bombing in 1995. If Baylee's had survived, she would have turned 31 years old this year. It's rough that April 9, was the 30th Anniversary and it was all over the news and "Specials" were being aired about it.

I don't get why people do this. For some reason, people appear to get an emotional reaction from stroking a lump of bronze that was cast by some old guy in a shed. Edit. I love dogs, real ones that is.

While household objects might not immediately seem like pieces of “art,” it’s still important to remember that many were still made by craftspeople. This would fit the definition of “applied arts,” objects that were designed to be functional first, but could still have some artistic elements to it. Just like some installations use time to change the objects that are visible, so can frequent use add to a thing's uniqueness.

Having had a dog fall out of the car window, I respectfully disagree. All it takes is one sharp swerve or sudden stop, or the car getting sideswiped by another vehicle. The older the dog gets, the more dangerous it becomes as their ability to balance gets weaker.

Psychologically, collecting and cherishing aged items can fulfill a desire for continuity and identity. According to the University of Miami, humans have an innate tendency to collect objects, often driven by a need to preserve memories and assert a sense of self. These items become extensions of our experiences, embodying stories and emotions that define who we are.

There is also a sort of comfort and keeping things for a long time, it feels financially savvy to not buy new “stuff,” you feel like you got a good deal.

    Must be filled with dust..

In essence, the allure of timeworn objects lies in their ability to resonate with our emotions, aesthetics, and sense of history. They remind us that beauty isn't always in the new and flawless but often in the aged and imperfect, a reflection of life's journey etched into the very fabric of these cherished items.

I have a little miniature teddy bear that holds a heart, which my Mama bought for me as a little girl. That bear went into my overnight bag, whenever I would have a sleepover at a friend's house, or would sit in the corner of my bed, well into my teenage years. After Mom died, it reappeared to sit in the corner of my bed, and my old man cat Tiger absolutely loves it. Tigey is 15 years old, was my Mom's cat and the little guy only weighs 7.5lbs. Bear is the perfect size for him and he'll drag it around on my bed, just so he can cuddle and sleep with it during naptime. It's funny, because Tigey knows that Bear isn't allowed off the bed, so the other cats know that he's off limits and will avoid the thing like the plague. 😁😁

We call that kind of stuff as having a farmer's tan. You'll see that a lot, where the left arm has a dark tan and the right is a normal color from driving your trucks around all day. Hell, in the summertime most of the teenagers that had cars would have the same thing. EVERYONE drove older cars and trucks and over half of them didn't have working AC's, so the windows ALWAYS stayed rolled down. I'm Gen X, the same generation that put on baby oil and would layout to tan in the Summer. Skincare wasn't a really big priority to a lot of us back then.

My friends' sailboat lost their rudder in 45' of water, leaving only two halves of the bolt on the right as evidence. I'm a scuba diver, so I went and got it back. Which meant that I made my first freshwater dive, first marine salvage dive, and first underwater boat repair dive all in the same afternoon.

I bought my first front wheel drive Camry 20 years ago. That car destroyed tires. No matter that I had them regularly balanced and rotated, they would only get 20 K miles on them and be completely bald. I tried three different brands. I was not a fast driver either. No one could figure it out other than to say the front wheels drive design causes more tire wear.
