People Share Times When “There Was An Attempt” And Here Are 50 Of The Most Amusing Ones
We all know very well that things in this world tend to backfire. Call it a law of nature, a frequent twist of fate, or destiny. “Look who’s laughing now” is a phenomenon that has happened to virtually every one of us, and no matter what you do, it repeats again and again, and again.
The Reddit community “There Was An Attempt” is dedicated to precisely the comic absurdity of all the attempts in life that went against the plan, or turned in the wrong direction. Created in August 2015, the subreddit now has 1.9m members that are not immune to the funny attempts that “were there.”
“People enjoy the slapstick comedy of it. At the end of the day, everyone is laughing,” the subreddit’s moderator told Bored Panda in the interview that you can read in full below. And now we leave the stage to the ensued hilarity.

Bored Panda spoke to redditor u/F4T4-M0RG4N4, the moderator of the r/ThereWasAnAttempt subreddit, who said that the community has evolved a lot since it was created 5 years ago.
“When I first joined the team, it was mostly a screenshot sub. A few months back, there was some drama about how there were only three mods who ran the subreddit (which at the time had around a million members).” As a result, they invited more people to join the moderator team and removed the screenshot posts.

For those who’re wondering what, precisely, “there was an attempt” refers to, u/F4T4-M0RG4N4 explained that it’s basically about “someone attempting something but ultimately failing.”
Conceptually, it’s similar to “if someone tried jumping off a trampoline into a pool but when they tried to jump, the trampoline tore. In that case, you could say, 'Well... there was an attempt, at least' and that’s where our subreddit comes into play.”
The posts are mainly about “some people having a dumb idea, trying out that idea, and failing.” This misery is what makes it so funny.

I love him! He is the narrator on the Goldberg's.
Today, the moderator team only allows video submissions and cross-posts, “which are posts that were in one subreddit but were reposted to another (kind of like retweeting.” This format works better for r/ThereWasAnAttempt, since screenshots can more easily become reposts, for one.
Especially when there’s one similar subreddit that’s specifically for social media clapbacks and comebacks, but its content mainly features screenshots. When it comes to their 1.9 million member count, the moderator said that “I don’t think we have the exact same post frequency as, say, a meme subreddit.”
Partly, it’s because it isn’t easy to repost something from r/ThereWasAnAttempt. “I could probably look at the new section for r/memes and see quite a few frequent reposts.”

To Shame Atheists And Take Away Their Holidays
Trees are pagan anyway (Germanic traditions). Gift giving and feasting are holdovers from Saturnalia... so why should Christians "be allowed" to celebrate with pagans. They should just have the day off for prayer.
Load More Replies...Atheists also accept Labor day, Sugar Holiday, and every other opportunity to have a day off. That's because they are smart.
What’s Sugar Holiday? I tried to look it up but I only got cookie recipes.
Load More Replies...Many Christian festivals are based on pagan rites and rituals. As the church conquered the world they subsumed the pagan beliefs of the territories they conquered. So, for example, Yuletide and the Scandinavian Crampus were twisted into Father Christmas and Christ's birth was changed to December 25th to match. This was done to make it easier to "spread the word of Christ" (conquer) the local inhabitants. Ironically, Christmas cards and trees were Victorian inventions and Santa's red cloak came from an advertising campaign for Coca-Cola (originally Santa had a blue cloak). The Harvest Festival, also celebrated in many churches, is a pagan celebration common in many countries, thanking the Gods for a bountiful Summer and Autumn. The Greek and Roman pantheons had their own harvest gods, but the belief was also common in most of Europe, including Britain, Germany and Scandinavia. The Green Man was subsumed into Easter, too.
Load More Replies...How about we both just be respectful of each other and our beliefs. I don't shove my Catholicism down everyone throat and I don't need others screaming at me about a flying spaghetti monster.
Scientifically devised medical care, the Scientific method and Big bang theory got started in Religious Schools.
Yeah come on guys, half my church work in medical care and we've got plenty of scientists too. They aren't in opposition.
Load More Replies...Most religious holidays were used to 'replace' pagan holidays. With this logic, this "religious" person should quit celebrating pagan holidays if they love God so much. 🤦♀️
Fasting, contemplating one's sins, and spending hours on one's knees in prayer.
Load More Replies...Most days of the week are named after gods. There's not much we can do about any of the holidays or days or anything else.
The Arabic calendar and the original Roman calendar were very similar, I believe (if I recall correctly), but the Roman calendar was later changed from 14 months to 12, with a change in the number of days in each, to match what had been learned about astronomy. When Christ was born, not only was he born in Spring or Summer, but because December 25 back then would not be the same day as it is today. Christ being born on Christmas Day is a lie. As well as being shifted to match a pagan festival, the Western Calendar changed enormously since his lifetime. The Arabic calendar would probably provide the most accurate anniversary for his birth today.
Load More Replies...I believe in God and I believe in science. They are not mutually exclusive.
Eh no. This doesn't make sense to me but that's probably because I'm Muslim. Do other religions reject science in real life?
Not exactly religions, but many religious people do. Humans in general do, but some of the religious use that as an excuse.
Load More Replies...My great great great uncle John Brashear was a very well respected astronomer and inventor, who has his inventions on the Hubble, and also was a Christian.. Christians believe in science and medicine and it's asinine to think otherwise..
But, in general, that is a somewhat rare exception, certainly not the rule. Most scientists tend to be atheists and agnostics. The people with the most evidence about the universe have not found any scientific evidence supporting any god claims. The religious scientists tend to compartmentalize when believing in science, and when believing in religious claims.
Load More Replies...The same way we accept days of the week named after Norse and Roman gods
Science and religion aren’t mutually exclusive. As a Christian, I take full advantage of scientific advancements, like cars, medicine, and the printing press.
Well, Christianity had a bit of a habit of pinching the holidays of Pagan religions, so by this logic, Christians shouldn't get Christmas holidays.
Being religious doesn't mean rejecting science. I don't know why that concept is so popular, but its wrong. Also, answering a question with a snarky question typically means you're angry because don't have a valid answer.
It's popular because the ones who do are loud and obnoxious! They stand out and become the standard bearers for the religion of choice.
Load More Replies...besides they're not christian holidays, they are pagan ones adapted from christians
had a similar question for my employers: if i had to take the holidays off for christian holidays/events why did i have to use my vacation time for my faith's events.
My 75 year old landlady just told me she does not believe the virus is real. She is mega religious. This was after I told her a relative had caught the virus and died last week. her reply was that the virus was fake. So when we get a vaccine she can just pray to her God if she gets sick.
If she gets it, the hospital shouldn't admit her. It's imaginary, after all, right?
Load More Replies...We do pray, and we also trust that God has given us wonderfully bright people who use Science and learn things and become medical professionals who can help us get well. Being religious -- being Christian -- doesn't mean you don't believe in Science. Most of us believe in both! (And a darned awful lot of us, myself included, believe God used the evolutionary process in creating the universe. Honestly, we're not all far right-wing nutjobs.)
Most of us aren’t. Just the ones that are get press.
Load More Replies...Can’t we be Christian (or Muslim or Buddhist exc...) and believe in science? The world is very orderly so can’t both go together? Somebody to make the order and the order being called science?
You need to convince some of the loudmouthed bigoted Christians of that. I see nothing that clashes, but evidently they do, and they want the whole world to know it.
Load More Replies...The so-called christmas is actually a celebration of the winter solstice, an astronomical event. And it was hijacked by religious people from the pagans because the church-fathers couldn't keep people from having fun on that day. The jesus figure is really supposed to be a springbirth, since no lamming takes place in winter, and it's way too cold even in Palestine of yore when the figure is supposed to have been born. Other "gods" supposedly born at winter solstice are Krishna, Horus, Mithra among very many others. The jesus figure is only one of many.
The primary thing that is problematic about religion is when it is imbued into legislation (abortion, marriage equity, etc.) Atheism imposes nothing - on no one. Ask Jefferson. I do t know why this is an issue. We are all free to accept faith/religion (or not) in this nation - pretty unique. It’s called freedom. Folks sailed here because the Church of England and the Monarchy. Simply put. Idiots think Christianity is American. My native indigenous ancestors/tribal members(dad) say that stuff has done more harm than good. Mission schools : teach people (who were fine before white folks came) how to sew, launder, serve - and regime to their beliefs and languages. Ah, hell nah.
For the same reason Christians happily accept days named after Pagan Gods - Tiu/Tyr's Day, Woden/Odin's Day, Thor's Day, Freya's Day, Saturn's Day. Even Sun Day and Moon Day have pagan origins for the names even if they're not literally named after Gods. If a day is a national holiday it's a national holiday and I get to take it as a holiday regardless of its origins. The fact it's based around Christian mythology has no more effect on my ability to take it as a holiday than the fact that day names are based around Pagan mythology stops a Christian using those names. When you successfully get the days (and months in some cases) renamed because the origin conflicts with your beliefs then you get to complain about me not working on Christmas.
And that means that the Christian supervisors would have to come in, too. And *that's* not happening.
Load More Replies...I like it when Jesus comes around at Christmas on that sleigh with that red coat he wears, such fun.
Don't take away holidays from me just because I believe more in science than religion.
oh and dont get me started on tax avoiding "churches' that are just big business.
A lot of religious holidays (like Easter or Christmas) have pagan origins.
Not all religious people reject science. Good answer, though, for the type of religious people who write things like the original post.
Simple answer.... Most work places are closed on these particular holidays regardless 🙂 so don't insinuate something when it's simple facts 👍 trust me I'd rather be making $$ on Christmas and Easter and banging my girlfriend wedlock and then lighting up some illegal goodies with my gay best friend and and drink some hard liquor while lusting over some porn when I feel the need to take a big deuce! And damn low and behold out of TP and then that's when I remembered the bible could save me!? Thank you Jesus I scream! TO the confusion of the others 🤣.. see Jesus (a commen Mexican name) 🙂 is my cousin and he tossed his bible we modified to conceal our "goodies" in my hamper and I was able to wipe my brown hole with the Corinthians 3:40 and it was pleasant!! Drugs! Sex! Porn! And the bible useful for once in history on the Christian Messiahs false holidays 😂
there! that is a man, who don't even understand God, he despise so much...
They DO know Christmas isn't only about Jesus, but also about a good Samaritan (St.Nicholas) who helped to create the image of Santa Claus?
God has given humans the ability to develop treatments for disease.
Some religions don’t use medical care as it goes against their religion! I was in hospital once and a Johoviah’s witness was on the same ward. She didn’t realise she was supposed to be having tests, staying the whole week and possibly having surgery. She wouldn’t even be weighed! Let alone have a blood test or anything else. They don’t accept other people’s blood or organs etc so no transfusions or transplants. She tried to convert the whole ward though. Each to their own unless you try and ram your religion (of any kind) down my throat. I have a faith and that’s it
but their response falls a part. If you consider belief in a deity is a singular thing, and using science is not the same type of belief system, then one could be in a religion and also see benefits of medical care. Science wasn't built to oppose and existence of God, so why do people continually try to make it so?
There was a time when christianity ruled the world and it was called the Dark Ages for a f-u-c-king reason. Science and the enlightenment drastically changed christianity's stranglehold on humanity for the better. The fundamentalist, dark age christians were as bad or worse than muslim extremists. Science greatly tempered religion. Don't ever forget that. Every time an abrahamic holy books makes a scientific claim, it fails. The catholic church used to kill people for saying the sun is the center of our planetary system. The popes have had to revise many of their positions as scientific evidence mounted. God claims are shrinking into the gaps of the knowledge we do not yet posses, becoming a god of the gaps. Study the history of religion; it tends to push back against science hard. Are you forgetting that christians have tried to and some continue to try to stop stem cell research? It's not that science was built to oppose religion, but religion has tried to strangle science from birth.
Load More Replies...I've got a Get Out of Church Free card, my birthday is the 25th of December, so that's what my 'athieist' family has always celebrated
And if religious people prayed then God would direct them to the correct medical care. Why else would he spend all that time and effort to make it happen. The holidays are called bank holidays though ie banks always used to shut on those days and I'm sure even athesists believe in banks.
Atheists get holidays because the religious snarks don't want to come in and supervise them!
they also accept names of months and days named after gods, for Saturns' sake!
I'm an agnostic, but I celebrate every religious holiday I can. Since none of us really know whether or not there is a god(s), why not cover all your bases? Besides, celebrating holidays is fun! And I don't offend any of my religious friends, since their holiday gets equal billing at my house. And, I don't get offended if I get a gift for whatever holiday!
And many are pagan holy days. Christmas - Yule New Year’s Day - Janus Easter - Pagan goddess of fertility, Oestre. Nov 1 - Samhain May 1st - Celebrating the Roman goddess Maia Saint John’s Eve - Summer Solstice
At the end of these day, everyone needs a time to rest and celebrate certain milestones in the year and in their lives. The various belief systems in existence today provide a handy common denominator for most people, especially when financial institutions have to work on the same days for international business. I think Christmas is fabulous for families and children, not as a religious festival, but as a time to rest, celebrate and reflect. And I think Christians have an much a right to do the same at that time, even though the reasons behind it being then are bloody and false. Today, it's just a time for families.
Ootch! That was unnecessary! Just suggest they tell their kids there will be more Trick or Treating. Then there's Santa and Frosty and Rudolph and...
Not all people who are religious are anti medicine/anti science. Most athiests (won't say all, don't do blanket statements) don't believe in religion or that which goes with it. 🙄👍
Because religious people believe god gave doctors the right and ability to heal people. Noam's reply only shows he has no idea what he is arguing against.
Tell that to the Muslim pioneer of medicine Abu Al Qasim Al Zahrawi considered the "father of surgery, also al-khwarizmi - considered the father of Algebra, the word alegbra is derived from his book" Kitab-al-jabr". Tell that to the Christians - Galilei, bacon, Copernicus, Newton, Boyle, leibniz and many more. By this logic if a person is not an athiest then he should not provide any advancements in science? Why do athiests believe science and religion are two separate things. Also Everyone should have holidays regardless of what they believe.

Besides the word “Christ” being in it, there’s like zero connection. If Christians think Christmas is about god or whatever, then why do they do the presents and Santa thing like the rest of us?
Because the three wise men brought gifts? Bc Saint Nicolaus brought gifts in secret? Bc thousands go to church services on Xmas or Xmas eve to celebrate the birth of baby J? Bc giving is a sign of love, and they are exhorted by their religion to love thy neighbor? Bc originally, Xmas was a religious holiday and it's actually the rest of us who have let it become a secularized, commervial event? Your worldview is highly intolerant.

If it makes people happy, it would go against Christianity not to share it. (And I really like my science)
I do not agree with the first, but the second is even more stupid. A lot of scientists are religious. There is no opposition between science and religion and moreover atheism is not a more scientific belief.
There are some scientist christians, but that is a somewhat rare exception, certainly not the rule. Most scientists tend to be atheists and agnostics. The people with the most evidence about the universe have not found any scientific evidence supporting any god claims. The religious scientists tend to compartmentalize when believing in science, and when believing in religious claims. Most religious people generally are not scientists. Atheism is just not being convinced of any god claims, and it is more scientifically correct, because there is no evidence supporting religious claims. Claims of sky wizards using magic words while creating the universe are unscientific. Claims of Adam being made from mud, dirt, or clay are not scientific. Stop pretending those beliefs have equal footing.
Load More Replies...No it’s not. Science is a method for knowing the natural universe and cosmos. God is supernatural. Most scientists are atheists and agnostics. The people with the most evidence in the world are generally not from your religion. There is no scientific evidence for any god claim. Every time an Abrahamic holy book makes a scientific claims, it gets it wrong.
Load More Replies...Science is not an object of argument against faith. Science is God's work, but because God's work can be explained does not disprove its context. For example, I am taking biology and it is blowing my mind at how these cells seem to have a mind of their own to make us like what we are, much less the fact that different atoms and molecules have different properties to produce the same outcome almost every time. Pretty much each individual molecule has its own role, and they come together to serve another role. Everything is so organized. To call all of this an accident is beyond me. Anyway, we can pray for science which can lead us to the answer we are seeking under His discretion. There is some science explained so far during Jesus' death, but you can look it up for more information.
Please keep taking science classes. Please keep learning, paying attention and questioning. Science is a method for knowing the natural universe and cosmos. God is supernatural. Most scientists are atheists and agnostics. The people with the most evidence in the world are generally not from your religion. There is no scientific evidence for any god claim. Every time an Abrahamic holy book makes a scientific claim, it gets it wrong. Scientific studies have shown that petitionary prayer has the same outcome as random chance.

From history it's clear ancient humans thought lightning and thunder were the gods being upset at them, so they would make a sacrifice. Now we understand it is just small bits of water colliding causing electric charges. There is always an explanation whether we know it or not. It's not some mystery man in the sky.
