There is a legendary phrase from one of our favorite shows, ‘The IT Crowd,’ that we absolutely love. The members of the IT department pick up the phone and immediately ask, “Have you tried turning it off and on again?” And it encapsulates the essence of tech support in just 9 simple words!

However, what they have to deal with pales in comparison to real-life professionals. The r/techsupportgore subreddit is a fantastic place that’s dedicated to documenting the very worst things that tech support peeps have ever had to deal with while on the job. We’ve collected some of their most hilarious and bizarre posts to share with you, so don’t be shy, scroll down. Oh, and this post might convince you to treat your IT crew to lunch—they really do deserve it.

Joke's on them. Most knobs are just press-fitted, so pull it out and re-attach it so the horizontal screw will set the minimum instead of the maximum.

My neighbors, who live in a separate house with yard between, play their music so loudly that I can hear it in mine. This with the windows closed in both houses. They used to do it until four or five in the morning. I finally called the police on them twice in one night. They either turn the music off or down around midnight now.

Aside from removing the screws, this could also be defeated by increasing the output level of the source (e.g., your phone). Volume controls are relative, not absolute.

I don’t have kids, but I was one once (more years ago than I feel like admitting tonight). If my dad had had to resort to this extreme for my brother or me to keep the volume to an acceptable level, and we tried to circumvent it, it would have resulted in the stereo maybe being thrown in the trash. More likely, it would have been smashed and we would have been the ones to throw it away. Not that he was unreasonable, but if he had told us to turn it down enough that he had to go to extremes such as this and we still disregarded his authority, he would show us who was boss. And that was who put a roof over our heads.

Given that the corner between those walls is likely filled with studs, this is not unreasonable. The alternative would be to cut out sections of the drywall so that you could drill diagonally through that corner, which would make a mess. Besides, with the solution used here, you gain access to the cable in the room it passes through.

I had an in installer (not for xfinity) want to drill a hole, about 2 feet from the wall, into a hard wood floor that was still in process of being installed, to run a cable up because of restricted access below.....there was a freaking built in storage shelving unit directly below it, all he had to do was open the damn door and there ya go... wouldn't do it so i told him to p**s off and ended up doing it myself. not the first total moron I have had show up to do this kind of thing.

This is c**p that is easy to do, say it's connected, and split for the day. It can be done more aesthetically with the right extra pieces which are not normally included in the shop's installation guy's bag that make it look like molding with no wire exposure.

Yeah. Needs a sub-structure. 1x4's, or 2x4's anchored to studs or at the very least drywall anchored to the wall, then you can screw to it. Drywall alone won't cut it. Obviously.

For instance, you shouldn’t post photos of devices with cracked screens. They’re incredibly common in real-life and don’t count as ‘gore’ in this context. What’s more, computers coated in dust also usually aren’t ‘bad enough’ to warrant being shared on r/techsupportgore.

Meanwhile, the community also values short-format videos. Namely, you shouldn’t post videos that are longer than 30 seconds. “This is plenty of time to show what needs to be shown,” the mods explain.

Bet some “genius” came up with the idea to turn the desks around, like they got bored and wanted to rearrange the furniture or something. But the computers were wired for the desks facing their original direction. So why not undo the stupid idea the “genius” came up with, and just put the damn desks back the way they’re supposed to be?

Easy: dismantle the whole thing. Clean it, part after part with isopropyl alcohol. Mount again the whole thing. You will have a great weekend.

While it seems slightly silly (and maybe even magical at times) that restarting your device helps solve some of the issues you’re having, there’s some solid logic hiding behind that. According to ‘Acronyms,’ when there’s an issue with modern computers, it’s usually because one of the programs is struggling or “two conflicting commands” confuse the machine.

So when you turn it off and on again, you’re resetting the device to its initial state. Everything starts over again, completely fresh.

The laptops battery is inflated, pushing away the casing. It does that after getting super old, or heated up. It is dangerous because it can explode, shooting shrapnels of the torn casing around it, wound people, and start a fire. In this case (pun intended), it is in so severe condition, an explosion is imminent every minute, especially putting it under more stress by using the computer.

WHAT WORKS: A micro fiber cloth. Spray bottle with distilled water. Spray a tiny bit of water on the CLOTH (not screen). Wipe. If you have never done this you will be amazed by how well it works. I learned this by asking a guy working the electronics section at Costco how they clean all those screens. He mentioned they also sometimes put a TINY bit of hydrogen peroxide in with the water but I have not personally tried that. The water worked so well I never bothered. In general I don't like the feel of microfiber cloths but for screens and glasses they are amazing.

During another interview, the moderator told Bored Panda that a lot of the content shared by members of the sub “does rather well.” The only exceptions are when people actually try to get real tech support.

Meanwhile, the reason for the subreddit’s continued success is just how fun it is. “In a time where most of the internet can be incredibly serious and most times saddening or angering, r/techsupportgore is fun because you go on it and you can laugh (and/or cringe) at the crazy posts. Where else can you see a post like, ‘Wow, these cables really are messy’ to, ‘A lizard fried my motherboard’ back to back? I love our growing community. They're a bunch of people that just enjoy tech and to some extent, the worst of it,” the moderator said.

Some laptops are notorious for this. My old Sony Vaio had a dreadful radiator design that meant it had to be cleaned out a couple of times a year. I've also had a powering off issue with a new laptop which due to a BIOS update started getting false readings from the CPU thermal monitors and shut itself down without warning at various times of day.

In the early days of PCs, a maintenance issue was keeping the floppy / CD / tape drives clean inside. By design, the fan blew out and the air sucked in through the various devices. I assume with the idea this would help keep everything cool. But of course that also caused ever bit of dust and pet hair to be sucked into those devices. It was only much later they went to the designs we have now where (mostly) the air flow is designed to avoid sucking in through anything important. Still a problem in very dirty environments but much better than it used to be.

My MSI laptop has this problem. I have to clean out the vents. Partly it's because I have three fur babies. And I have to sweep constantly sweep and dust. Next day, everything is covered in fur.

Them after removing the carpet: That'll be hmmmmm 750,000 dollar bucks. we had to replace the firebox with a firebox one (just some jargon i decided to make up to make them seem like they did a lot), you had some major corrosion and we added some more fans. oh also you have some carpet in there but we thought you might have some personal reasoning. anyway, don't forget that now in order to turn it on you must click the button thrice, then cluck like a chicken for approximately 2.5 seconds, spin your chair around 5 times and yell "I WANNA BE A BIG BOY NOW." ( I love the feeling of being smarter than others when you're a professional and can make up jargon or instructions because they believe you also the price can be outrageous.)

Probably out of a UPS. I had one in mine go the same way, though not quite so extreme. It was quite a struggle to get it out of the case to dispose of it.

They can be dangerous. I have seen the results of a battery server go into thermal runaway on an Uninterruptible Power Supply before, because the server room was a closet with no ventilation.

We found a dozen or so splices hidden in the vertical cable management panel. Apparently the runs were too short to terminate on the patch panel. Called the contractor back and had them rerun the cables.

I once had a client who kept their server in a cupboard under the stairs. I suggested they move it as could overhear and crash as well as getting dusty. They said it was fine where it was. A month later they call me as it is not working. Sure enough the insides are covered in dust and fluff. I clean it out and set up up in a more open area. Then they complained to my bosses that I sabotaged it. They got my side of the story and went back to the client saying that I advised that this could be an issue and you chose to ignore said advise so too bad.

I kept file server in my bedroom closet. I had about 2tb of movies stored on their. This was before Netflix started streaming. You could connect to the file server from my laptop and stream a movie. The server itself had a small SSD running Gentoo, that would boot in a couple seconds. Just mount the disk, and there's your movie.

Good luck. I've been trying for months now. So far I was sent a used card that was supposed to be new, then a damaged card that was supposed to be new, and now a new card that's defective, died, and took my windows installation with it. My birthday just came and went yesterday and I got a game controller and kerbal2 for gifts, but I'm still waiting on the RMA to get a working one, and it's not even clear if they can replace it with the same card, since they recently stopped manufacturing it. A newer card doesn't sound bad, until you realize I've already bought an expensive water block specific to the card I bought and the block can't be returned. *sigh*

Why do some plugs not let you turn them off at the wall? In the UK all our plugs can be turned off at the wall, and we are always advised to do this to save money and cut down on the fire risk as things like toasters can spontaneously catch alight if they’re not turned off, according to a fire safety brief I received a couple of weeks ago!

The voltage is much higher in the UK vs North America. It is 220 V in the UK vs 120 V in North America. The UK has greater protections like turning off at the wall because the voltage is higher. I am not an electrician though so that is just my understanding.

In my old job at a tour operator, the hotels had accountants who were given new laptops one year. Over half came back so badly damaged that they had to be binned but no one could say what happened that caused the screen hinges to break. My suggestion was that the next season’s accountants sign a form that says they will return the laptop in the same condition it is received bar normal wear and tear otherwise they lose their retainer. Management refused to consider that and couldn’t really say how we would make sure staff treat company equipment properly. Otherwise keep spending money on laptops which staff will destroy but “can’t” tell you what happened when they break stuff.

This is why you get yourself a universal remote. Especially nice at those hotels that use cheap universal remotes for the new TVs that don't have buttons on the TV itself (keeping you from switching to HDMI).

Meaningless without more context. Despite what my paranoid wife believes, it's not how many things are plugged into an outlet strip but rather what's at the other send of those cords. For example, a space heater and a toaster would be a suboptimum combination.

I've seen a few similar to this. It depends what the traces in that area are used for. Some are obviously for the onboard video out so if that's not used they might be lucky. Had a couple mobos with sporadic crashes and when you checked the components there was one or two bulging capacitors. So whenever that section of the board was in use it'd fail and crash.
