Yours truly is actually quite a huge fan of Switzerland. I spent a year living there when I was a very small child. I ‘blame’ that wonderful experience for my enduring love for the mountains, hiking, snow, gorgeous landscapes, giant chess sets (hi, Parc des Bastions!), and wild nature. Some of my earliest and most vivid memories are from going on walks in the mountains with my tiny little boots.

So, I genuinely understand the fascination with the country. To me, Switzerland represents freedom, nature, and beauty. But I’m a bit biased!

Some of us automatically think of high-quality cheese and chocolate, as well as hand-crafted clocks and watches when we think of Switzerland; however, that's only the tip of the iceberg. The country's main exports include machinery, equipment, chemical and pharmaceutical products, watches, textiles, and apparel, as well as raw materials, food, vegetable oils, and fuel.

Alas! Not everything is great in this Alpine paradise. It’s this same powerful banking sector that has earned Switzerland a reputation for corruption and secrecy. It's a reputation that the Swiss have been trying to shake off for a while now.

A 2018 study conducted by the Tax Justice Network, an independent international advocacy group, found that the country was the most corrupt in the entire world, with the United States coming in second place.

According to the Tax Justice Network, Switzerland “supplies 3.43% of the world's financial secrecy.” Meanwhile, Transparency International notes that “for decades, corrupt elites from across the world have used Swiss financial intermediaries and service providers to take advantage of legal loopholes that allow them to hide and launder their ill-gotten wealth.” However, the Swiss government is taking steps to tackle these issues.

In 2021, following lobbying by the industry, the parliament watered down amendments to the anti-money laundering legislation during their final deliberations. Swiss sockets are bloody annoying as a foreigner though, this type of socket doesn't work with the kind of adapter you can have for France or Germany. The 2 pins part is the same but if the "body" of your plug is round rather than this funny not-quite-hexagon, you can't use it. And they don't have these sockets everywhere so you can be in some places with the adapter you already have and it all works fine, then you go to another location with this type of socket and suddenly you're scuppered! I do know the solution is to buy another adapter but I hate having things that get rarely used!

It's popular. For good reason. In Winter it's nice to ski and to sled. Drive down, take the train back up...and so on. But in summer it's a great place to hike. The trail from the "Seebodenalp" up to the top is a fantastic thing to do. Or to walk/hike along the mountain ridge is pretty easy. If you enjoy hiking down, the trail from top down to "Greppen" is fantastic. So much to do and see up here.

Exactly! I know plenty of people who say "cycling's fine if it's flat" but ignore the fact that you get used to the hills and it's good for you! Where there's a will (and relatively good baseline health), there's a way. For people who say "cycling's fine if it's sunny", just get good outdoor gear. People cycle in all weathers in Germany too. If more people demand good cycling infrastructure and it is integrated into city planning, literally everyone benefits.
