For most of us, commuting on public transport is nothing more than a daily routine, often tiring, cramped, and noisy. Passengers pressed shoulder to shoulder, the air either too warm or too cold, the constant sounds overwhelming your senses. And of course, the occasional stranger stepping on your toes.
But for New York City–based photographer Hannah La Follette Ryan, every subway ride is an opportunity to find something beautiful.
She’s the creative mind behind the Instagram page Subway Hands, where she documents fascinating stories told through the hands of busy NYC riders. Nervously gripping a rail, carrying pets, scribbling last-minute birthday cards, hugging, reading, or simply resting on a lap—each gesture captures a piece of city life.
Though faces make only rare appearances in these snapshots, the images feel strikingly intimate, sometimes even more expressive than portraits. Scroll down to see some of her most captivating photos.

Will never forget this lady who put in her hearing aid *after* her companion got off the train
🥰🥰🥰But I could never get Chicco to do anything like this even as a pup!
Since its launch in 2015, Subway Hands has grown to nearly half a million followers as of September 2025.
The account has earned Hannah La Follette Ryan not only a devoted online community but also opportunities far beyond the train itself—most recently, she covered the hands of guests at New York Fashion Week from the front row.
The project began when La Follette Ryan moved to New York City straight out of college.
“I had a 45 minute commute to my day job as a nanny, which taught me that public transit is the perfect place to people watch,” she told Kinn.
“Most riders have a guarded facial expression, distracted or withdrawn, but I learned that hands are their tell. People fidget, self-soothe, crack knuckles, crochet, shadow box—on the NYC subway, you see it all,” she explained.
Don't be smiling, she doesn't know him and he sucked her eye right out of her head. The subway eye-snatcher strikes again!
Unless there's a sudden stop. Homie will go flying.

Her initial inspiration came from a portrait of Georgia O’Keeffe by Alfred Stieglitz.
“[O’Keeffe’s] hands take up most of the picture,” she told Vice. “Their pose is sensual and dramatic, more expressive than her face. Hands are weird. They operate reactively and on instinct. Mostly we let them do their own thing. I think they can be our most honest feature.”
I think it's the breeders who do it very early in the poor pups' lives (and it should be illegal, IMHO). I didn't think owners could do it after getting a dog?

It was also seen as enhancing the dog’s directional hearing and location. It also does help keep the ear dry and prevent infections. Now days it’s mostly done out of tradition and esthetics. The surgery is performed when the dogs are very young. The ears are then kept posted daily to keep them upright until the cartilage sets. About 6 month. In the US, certain breeds like Great Dane, Dobermans, Schnauzer, unfortunately need this to be competitive in conformation dog shows. The tails are often docked on short haired working dogs to prevent painful fractures. Wagging tails on running and jumping dogs have very little muscle, fur, and skin to protect the tail when it hits trees rocks and brush. The breaks are usually painful, compound fractures that necessitate surgery or amputation.
No idea why you were downvoted for explaining what it means. Here's an upvote to bring you back to zero.

This fixing is the result of crossbreeding offspring of white Dobermans traced back to the initial dog with this trait, a female named Sheba born in 1976. The result is a line of dogs that are incredibly inbred and have many health issues too.
But her fascination with hands goes back even further, to childhood.
“I loved holding hands with my grandfather and my dad. I noticed the difference in the texture of our skin, evidence of the life they lived before me,” she told Kinn.
“Hands are expressive and central to how we navigate the world. Hands can be elegant, sculptural, odd-looking—their versatility has held my interest for the last ten years,” she added.

Nooooo really. Thank goodness you pointed that out for the rest of us.

“Especially in a public space, faces can be guarded and inscrutable,” La Follette Ryan said. “Hands are expressive and reactive in a way that often feels more honest. We reveal a lot about ourselves through our nervous tics, the tension in our hands, our subconscious gestures.”
Maybe they were a couple by the end of their journey.

The project’s success was gradual, but La Follette Ryan believes it resonates because of its interactive nature. Public transit is a shared experience, and she’s even seen riders scrolling through Subway Hands while on the train themselves.
Looks suspiciously like an English Bull Terrier. Great dogs. Mine was named Pearl.
Aww my friend had one called Pearl. And one called Mrs Treacle. Her current one is called Ada Pudding.

Ahead of this year’s Fashion Week coverage for Vogue, La Follette Ryan’s work was featured on a Times Square billboard after she photographed the band Boygenius for their Madison Square Garden show.
“I’m used to seeing my photos on a tiny phone screen so it was a huge shock and thrill to see one of my photographs on the side of a building,” she said.

“I told the guy in the suit that the ring looked beautiful, wished him luck and snapped a photo of the sign. I posted the photo and a couple hours later received the comment: ‘she said yes!!!!’” La Follette Ryan revealed.
Still, despite all the stories and recognition, her most cherished subjects remain closer to home: her grandparents.

That´s not nice. Don´t shame a book for their manipulative interpretors. You could say the same thing of the Bible or any other cult written down.

I've never been on a subway. Is it really steady enough to do that?
No it isn´t. But some people do not care so much about the outcome. I always think that, when younger women put their makeup on, while going to work with the tube.
