“He’s A Douchebag”: 50 People Share What Schoolmates-Turned-Celebrities Were Like Before Fame
Remember when your teacher would ask the entire class about what they wanted to be when they grew up? There were always a few kids who’d say that they wanted to become adventurous astronauts, charismatic rock stars, and legendary athletes. They were shooting for the stars! And though life happens and we have to let go of some of our ambitions, not everyone gives up on their dreams. Some of them turn theirs into reality.
Maybe you didn’t know it at the time, but the person sitting next to you in class and at the cafeteria was going to become wildly famous in the future. Maybe they were the kids of famous parents and it wasn’t a secret to anyone. Well, that’s exactly what internet users discussed in an insightful thread on r/AskReddit.
Redditors revealed who they or their relatives went to school with who’s famous now, and spilled the beans about what they were like back then. It’s amazing to learn how fun, kind, and down-to-earth many beloved celebrities were… though it’s not the case with everyone. Check out their stories below and let us know which ones resonated with you the most, Pandas!
We got in touch with entertainment, pop culture, and lifestyle expert Mike Sington for a chat about recognizing who will go far while they're still in school. "Many people have talent, very, very few have star quality," he told Bored Panda. We also asked Hollywood's Ultimate Insider about the potential pitfalls that celebrities ought to be aware of, how to stay grounded, and how to behave at your next school reunion if your classmate is famous. You'll find the full interview below.

I went to high school with **Taylor Swift**. She was endearing and awkward. Extremely kind and modest. A group of us saw her perform on Good Morning America one morning before anyone knew she was a musician. Went she returned to school later in the week and we were like "WHAT THE F**K TAYLOR?? Who are you?"
Her bashful response, "Oh... umm... I really like to play guitar". Few months later she performed "Our Song" at our annual talent show. There was a silence before the huge round of applause. It was the first time 90% of us ever heard her music.
(I was a senior her freshman year. We had gym together)
Sounds like a shy, genuine talent in it for the fun of it. Love that.
I love that, too . F**K! I'm teary-eyed! You opinion does fly in what seems to be "popular opinion." I have never been good at popular. Nice. You are either honest or generous. Nice. And, now, I'll give her a second listen. Nice. [Being this .... feelin... Hmmm. Warm & fuzzy = Upf***ingsetting! Ease up, sweetness!]
Load More Replies...I had a feeling Taylor is who she appears to be, a pretty nice person.
Only someone who's doing it for the music would keep pushing forward after all the personal criticism. She used music, rather than media, to address them.
She certainly didn't do it for the money. She was already rich.
Load More Replies...I like to think she said it like Garth in Wayne's World after he plays the epic drum solo. "Thanks...I like to play" *tap*
little did she know back then that years later she'd cover the billboard top 10!
She and I are from the same hometown. I've never met her, but everybody I know who has says she's really cool. That makes me happy.
"It’s charisma that will usually tip you off as to who will make it big in the future. Who did everyone want to be around? Who had that undefinable X-factor? Those are the people most likely to be famous in the future," celebrity expert Mike explained to Bored Panda what the signs of someone who will probably go far in life are.
"Having talent simply isn’t enough. The most talented people in school may go on to make a living with that talent, but it’s unlikely to catapult them to stardom. Many people have talent, very, very few have star quality."
Hollywood's Ultimate Insider noted that there are a few major pitfalls that celebrities need to be aware of. "First, be careful of who you surround yourself with. Are those people in your life there to help and support you? Or are they just latching on to your fame for the ride and excitement of it all? Even worse, are they there taking advantage of you?" he warned.
My dad went to the same high school as Prince. Apparently he was a very quiet kid, didn't have many friends.
My friend went to elementary school with Prince and said he used to take his milk money. I knew Ben Bratt, Margaret Cho, and Sam Rockwell who all went to school in SF. Ben was a total sweetheart who was always nice and polite when his little sisters´ friends slept over. Sam Rockwell, Margaret Cho, and Aiesha Taylor were all ridiculously talented when performing in plays at SF´s School of the Arts. Sam did an amazing job in ¨An Indian in the Bronx,¨ and I thought he was going places. I was a nerdy student taking APs and many of the future stars would cut class to smoke mary jane in Glen Canyon. They ended up world famous and I´m a substitute teacher.
My husband is a teacher, you are amazing for what you do. As I tell him, you 'touch the future', and as I also tell him, 'don't get caught'. ;-)
Load More Replies...Dang, well I would have sat with him at lunch table. Wearing my Raspberry Beret!
But apparently he is awesome at basketball and loves making pancakes
My Grandma went to school with Elvis. They had P.E. together. She said he was a real ladies' man and he was a total sweetheart.
My father in law was Elvis's staff sergeant while he was stationed in Germany. I have unpublished photos. Priscilla was my best friend's babysitter before he took her to Memphis. It's a round little world isn't it?
Are you aware of what genuine unpublished photos of Elvis could be worth?
Load More Replies...Huh ... think about him changing into those gym shorts 🤔 😳 🤩😊
Load More Replies...An old college friend said her Mom, as a young woman, had a handsome young man scare off a couple of guys who were hassling her. He stayed and talked for a few minutes until he was sure they were gone. Imagine her surprise when she saw that same young man on Ed Sullivan.
My aunt was one of those girls screaming at him through the fence of his army barracks when he was stationed in Germany in the 1950s
Is no one else bothered by the fact that he was a predator who GROOMED Priscilla????
According to all reports and every. Single. Source. Including Priscilla herself, he refused to consummate their relationship until after they married in 1968. A possible clue is that Lisa Marie was born exactly nine months after their wedding. They actually became much closer after the divorce. Priscilla begged him to stop touring and go to rehab. She had even made arrangements for him at a facility. But he obviously never went. From everything I have learned over many decades (hint: a lot!), Elvis never had relations with minors. He had a lot of faults, but this wasn't one of them. Compared to the vast majority of celebrities, Elvis was a saint. In all seriousness, he was a kind, decent, and generous soul.
Load More Replies..."Second, focus on the work, not the fame. If you’re constantly feeding the fame machine, the work will suffer, and you could find yourself in the middle of a downhill spiral. Third, never take fame for granted. Fame, can indeed, be fleeting. Approach fame with gratitude and respect. Never forget how powerful fame is and how it has thrust you into the public spotlight. Never let your guard down, even for a second. You can lose fame much faster than gain it."
Meanwhile, rely on your friends and family to stay grounded. Especially if you're becoming famous while still in school. Mike advises spending as much time as possible in the company of your loved ones. "Doing that will remind you, you are indeed still the same person."
"When meeting celebrities who you knew when they were younger, don’t be starstruck. They’re looking for normalcy in their life, and you reflect that, so just be you. It would, of course, be difficult to pretend their fame didn’t exist, so acknowledge it by simply complimenting their work," he said. And that's something to keep in mind for your next school reunion!
The sitter for my kids went to school
With Justin bieber. She said he's a douchebag.
I worked at a mall he use to frequent, I seen this guy push little kids out of his when and that was just when he was on youtube
Hey, my grandpa was born in Stratford. But that was back in the early 1900’s so I guess things could have changed…

I went to highschool with Ludacris. Back then he was just Chris, and he was hilarious.

My dad went to high school with Neil deGrasse Tyson. They were buddies, but not extremely close. He described him as being "popular, athletic, and an all around good guy". We even have a signed yearbook!
A space nerd *and* athletic? Is there anything this man cannot do? He's also quite good at reading audiobooks.
I have a bit of a crush on him now, I imagine I would have really had a crush on him in high school! He seems like the guy who was friends with all the cliques
Boy has he changed, then. Nowadays he makes the most cringe im11andthisisdeep sounding posts, acts super self-righteous on Twitter, and says ignorant stuff (like insinuating that the only cause of being overweight is overeating).
In 2012, I was very lucky to see him speak in front at our Phi Theta Kappa international convention in Seattle, Washington. I had never heard of him at the time. But there was something about his voice and brilliance that I will NEVER forget. I have grown to love him & his work over the years!
He's got it all... Brains, good looks, funny, laid back. Being athletic is icing on an already sweet cake. Lol. I love his show with Chuck Nice. They're so funny.
He is amazing at explaining sciencestuff and good communicator.
Genius. Pure genius. Stephen Hawking is right up there with him. Why didn't we learn from them?
We were incredibly glad to read that so many well-known celebs used to be kind and decent kids while growing up. Unfortunately, some of them weren’t all that stellar. Stars are definitely just like ‘regular’ people in one regard—they’re far from perfect.
They had more or less the same flaws as their classmates, but these were probably later amplified by their fame. When you put any person under the microscope and subject them to attention 24/7, you notice a ton of things you probably otherwise wouldn’t. Suddenly, you start becoming hyper-aware of how outrageously funny/arrogant/charismatic/(un)likable they used to be… though you wouldn’t necessarily say the same things about your classmates who went on to have ‘ordinary’ careers.
One of the best things that teachers can do is treat all students equally. It’s human nature to have favorites, but educators ought to put in the effort to make sure that everyone, no matter their family or financial status, gets the attention they need.
My father went to high school with John Stamos. He says that Stamos was a huge nerd and performed magic tricks at lunch. That is all
I danced with him at an underground club in the 90s a couple of times. He loves to dance like nobody is watching and he's pretty good. Very polite.
I was never a John Stamos fan until I saw him at a seafood restaurant in LA during the eighties. We didn’t bother him, but he was gracious and kind to the staff and, oh yeah; DROP DEAD GORGEOUS.
Uncle Jesse! I think he and his wife has an online jewelry shop, where they give all the proceeds to the Childhelp foundation.
I don't care what lame magic tricks he had in high school. He's still magical to me.
I also went to high school and junior high with Stamos J. F Kennedy la Palma CA class if 80 he was class of 81 we were in band together we all thought he was gay never saw him with a girl friend but hung around all the girls . He was real feminine at that age
I went to Kennedy ! I was good friends with his sister janine .
Load More Replies...I had the pleasure of meeting him once, when I was a teenager. He was so sweet and kind. He even let my friend and I kiss his cheeks so we could go back to school and say we kissed him. 😁
My Mom went to high school with Michelle Obama (formerly Michelle Robinson), and even has a yearbook with her signature in it. They were in the National Honor Society together, and had been pretty good acquaintances. It wasn't until one day after Obama was elected, my Mom was watching the news, and jumped in recognition and ran to find her yearbook.
Sadly the "Obama/Biden" train has become toxic for too many leaning towards the right. She would be awesome though. Intelligent, thoughtful, seems empathetic and honest.
Load More Replies...This comment says nothing about how she actually was as a person...?
What would America be like if every politician weren't pandering to the far left or far right? Maybe we could accomplish balancing the budget, passing laws that both protect and benefit all citizens while ensuring personal financial growth to a healthy population. JS.
I really really wish she would run for president as well, but she's probably too smart, and has seen too much! Can you imagine the landslide vote that would be? Omgosh!
You need to live in Venezuela for a year to see how you would like what she would bring...
Load More Replies...Michelle deserves all the recognition and respect we can give her after 8yrs of the filthy things said about her and President Obama. Now the "Lady of Steel" shines brighter, is more carefree, and is loved by all the right people.
Donald Trump, Jr. Went to the Hill School '94-95 while he was there. He was a cocky and judgemental douche who ran with a posse of sycophants of his choosing and who also always paid his way...dude never seemed to pay his own way. He also bagged his share of girls from the all-girl schools who would get busses in for our dances...dude was well aware of the power of his family name. The one negative encounter that comes to mind each time I see his smug face on TV is when that m**********r criticized my choice in hats. You see, I fancied myself a skatepunk in the early to late 90's. I had decided to get a straw golf hat and safety pin it up all Australian-like on one side and festoon it with a band make from a cut up school tie...f**k the police. Anyways, he see's me rollin', he hatin'. He yells out, "Hey, that's not a skater hat, f*g!". Ridiculous reason for a grudge, sure...but f**k that guy anyway.
Seems to run in that family ... his Dad's Dad owned a brothel once, and since then, they have only gone downhill steep and fast.
Load More Replies...The whole trump family is garbage, except for Mary trump, who should ditch the name
But Ben, I thought it was those Rednecks who voted for Trump?
Load More Replies..."...a cocky and judgemental douche who ran with a posse of sycophants of his choosing". So, nothing has changed apparently.
We've encountered him and his brother. Utter wastes of oxygen, IMO, and I say that as an MD who is supposed to do no harm. I'd save their lives if it was necessary, but they *wouldn't pay the bill*. Just like their daddy, and that says it all. Ugh. That whole family has one fan in the area, and it's the manager of the property they own.
It's fun to watch the MAGAts get down voted into oblivion. I don't know what the hell they think they're accomplishing, other than making me laugh.
I'm Canadian by the way, so Ben's comment is just f*****g confusing.
Load More Replies...DTjr looks like someone who's going to murder a CEO or politician one day, or make some sort of sinister plot to destroy a community, or even a country and become a dictator. He just comes across like that.
At some point, each one of us in the US are going to have to win a random contest to thwart his plans to destroy the local ski slope, school, village, sorority house, police precinct, public park or tiny independently owned bookshop. Either against him personally or against some misguided teenager he's personally mentoring. It's an inevitability.

Yeah, that's why the economy was so much better with him than with Biden right now. AT least back then you could afford a place to live unlike now
Load More Replies...Previously, Bored Panda spoke about motivating students and having a good working relationship with them with Lisa McLendon, from the University of Kansas.
"Just this week I put a current student in touch with an alum who was looking for a summer intern—I knew the student and what the alum was looking for, and I thought they’d be a good match. By Thursday she had the internship!" the professor shared with us earlier.
"It’s always nice to see when your students flourish. I also encourage (and have gotten the university to fund) students to attend an annual professional conference, to see what professionals in the field are doing and start to build their network. Every year a few students go, and they’re always happy to have had such an experience,"
Well i didnt exactly, but Johnny Depp was 1 grade ahead of me and I talked to him occasionally, and i can tell ya, he was the same as he is now, the lead in everything, the class clown/wierdo and had almost barley any friends
This is a picture of one of Johnny Depp's barley friends. Screenshot...bd-png.jpg
Ya know, some people are perfectly happy without "friends" They aren't always the best thing for you. Trust me, I've had some doozies.
That wasn't Johnny Depp; it was just a narc posing as Johnny Depp. I saw the TV show about it.
He barley had any friends…and this my friends is why we hire editors, even for listicle sites.
"barley" a cereal, mostly used to brew beer. What OP intended to say/write is "barely", as in "next to none". --- Try to imagine young JD with some 🌾-friends next to him.
Load More Replies...Barely had any friends....but had every single girl secretly wanting him...
Demi Lovato. She was the grade below me in middle school, and then moved to Hollywood just before high school. She was a real b***h and a half. Definitely the biggest mean girl of her grade. I don't really understand why she goes into interviews saying she was bullied so badly; it was her doing all the terrorizing.
Well both can definitely be true. I have definitely been bullied, at times pretty badly, but unfortunately I have also been on the other side of bullying and have done and said things that can't be undone.
*siiiiiiiigh* Live & let live, I've always said, and never really cared one way or another about celebrities...until Demi Lovato. I can't really put my finger on it, but there is something about her that gets under my skin. 🤔 It could be just me but, what is the correct phrase for someone who misappropriates something (like the LBGTQ community) just so you can say you're a part of it & then backpedals when the issue is no longer "popular"? Maybe I'm way off, but she gives off that vibe.
She didn't misappropriate it. She is still non binary. She just uses She as well as they. Like lots of non binary people
Load More Replies...I totally believe that. I can’t stand her. So pathetic of a human
I can’t take to her. Let her continue living in her delusional warped sense of reality singing to aliens and calling people some kind of phobic due to them. Out of touch is an understatement.
I believe this. She doesn’t come across as someone you’d like to know personally.
My boyfriend went to school with Michael Cera and was good friends with him until he moved away. He really is just as awkward and hilarious in real life and i have been told many funny stories about him.
I am from Brampton where he grew up and have only heard good things about him
I met him in Switzerland/Grindelwald years ago. Right after I saw him in Scott Pilgrim vs. the world for the first time. Super chill guy. Had a nice talk with him about his eurotrip with a friend. He also let us take a picture with him that I saw some days ago while browsing files on my pc.
Some students are genuinely grateful for all of the help their teachers gave them. For example, some send handwritten notes, saying how much they value what they learned. Small gestures like that can help educators stay motivated when things get tough. It’s a reminder that what they do really matters.
According to Professor McLendon, educators can help guide and inspire their students by showing the purpose of what they’re doing in class.
"Relating concepts and skills to real-world activities can help many students understand not just what they’re doing but why. Explaining the purpose of big-picture things like a whole course as well as small things like individual assignments can help students understand why what they’re doing is relevant. Also, putting concepts and skills into the larger field can help students contextualize what they’re doing and see how it relates to things they’ve done before and things they’ll be doing at the next level," she explained.
Tupac. I was in French class with him in either 10th or 11th grade. I was pretty s****y at French, and I don't remember him paying too much attention to the subject either. Then again, I remember little of those days since it was over 20 years ago. I can vouch for his having been really funny though- he had the whole class totally losing it on more than one occasion.
Clumsily dropped a loaded gun in a concert, resulting in the death of a six-year-old child... Convicted of rape and sodomy (although he got off on charges of sexual assault)... would-be two-time murderer (his estate settled a civil suite for millions of dollars)... Called for the murder of Biggy Smalls... violently attacked Allen Hughes... but hey, he cracked jokes in class, so it's all cool. What a guy!

A thug will always be a thug no matter what his idolizers say about him. They've drank the coolaide and now their idol is dead. What a requiem.
I love Tupac. My heart breaks all time that he left us so soon.
My mom went to highschool with him at Tamalpais High School as well he thought it was funny to toch her a*s which lead to a sexual assult it took a long time to tell anybody because she had just been rapped
Not me, but OJ Simpson asked my mom to go out with him in high school... luckily she said no...
When my sister and I were in high school, John Hinckley Jr asked her out and she said no. A few years before he shot Reagan.

That guy's rep for drugs and c**p back in his NFL days was well-hidden. Alas, it meant he got to be bigger, and we all know how that ended.
I was visiting NYC back in the 80s with a few other hot Canadian gals from Ottawa. We were ushered into a VIP lounge in some nightclub--the Limelight if I remember correctly--when Peter Frampton strolled in and sat beside us on a couch. After a few pleasantries he invited himself back to my hotel room. I laughingly declined. He then invited me to HIS hotel room. I laughingly declined. Finally he said "How about the stairwell?" 🙄😋
Zac Efron was in my high school speech and debate league. He accused me of wanting to kill Oprah in a debate. And he won.
I really loved Zac Efron in "Extremely Wicked Shockingly Evil And Vile" as he played Ted Bundy. Amazing actor.
I don't think Oprah should be killed, but she has some 'splaining to do for foisting Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz onto an unsuspecting public.
I was Zac’s math teacher in high school. He was placed in my class because his attendance was predicted to be “spotty”because he traveled to LA for his auditions. I worked around these circumstances and he was a fantastic student, the class loved him and he was just a wonderful person.
He accused me of wanting to kill Oprah in a debate..... And won 😂😂😂 that's the best thing I've read all week.
I used to like Oprah.she’s the perfect example of a true self-made millionaire, not one that was bankrolled with family money. But I can’t forgive her for Dr. Oz, the snake oil selling fake. Sorry…
Always intrigued to see what he's up to, we share the same birthday.
Meanwhile, if you ever need to let a student know that they ought to put in more effort into their classwork and homework, the so-called ‘sandwich’ method works wonders.
“Tell the student something good about their work (bread), tell them how something could be better (filling), then tell them something else good, either about their work or about your confidence in their ability to do it (bread). Some students want simple, direct feedback on what to fix, but many want to know that they’re at least on the right track and that their teacher thinks they can do it,” the professor said.

Went to primary with Peter Jackson's son (before Lord of the Rings came out). He told us his dad was making a movie, i laughed at him. Oh god why...
To be fair, The Frighteners didn't suck, either.

We got a movie for visiting Americans. One of his first. They laughed, made rude comments about the trash this kiwi guy had made. And went on about how he should get a new job. This was in 1989.
“We got a movie for visiting Americans?” What does that even mean?

My favorite part was always when Steve would completely lose his mind when the mail came 💕. Wasn’t the same without him!
My friend had a big crush on him while her daughter was watching the show on the regular
Just remembered another one; an ex-boyfriend of mine would travel the pond to Ireland every summer (his mother's Irish) and would attend an acting camp while there. Evanna Lynch, who plays Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter series, also attended every year, and they were actually on good terms. He says she more or less IS Luna Lovegood, and that most of what is portrayed on screen is how she is in real life, even down to the voice. :D
Some of the best casting in the entire series. I adore Evanna as Luna, who is a wonderful character.

Once did cocaine with Bob Newharts limo driver back in the ‘80’s after serving him (Newhart) and a bunch of other Hollywood big wigs dinner when I was in high school. It was my friends private residence. Newhart was the only one who did not get shitfaced and coked up. Won’t spill any more beans… Oh, and the connection to high school, I also used to hang out with Newhart’s son, Tim, while we were in high school. We used to go thrift shopping in Hollywood!
I'm not sure if it's true, but I did read somewhere that she wrote to Rowling before the movies saying that she was struggling with sui-thoughts/self harm and the books helped her a lot. If true, it's really neat that she ended up playing one of my favorite characters.
A friend of mine from high school said she was friends with Tom Felton, like could call him and chat and he would call her. I asked for her to call him and she suddenly had excuses, Then I asked to just see a pic of them together (she said they met through her grandma...don't remember why grandma had the hookup) and she couldn't produce one. She couldn't produce a scrap of evidence. I realized after she made a few more outlandish statements like this that she was just a lonely pathological liar who wanted attention.
My Friends Mom was asked to prom by Will Ferrell in high school. Apparently he showed up to her door completely naked and asked her in front of her parents.
This feels like a scene from one of his movies. I’m sure her parents weren’t too impressed.

My sister's friend went to school with Heath Ledger and he was good mates with him. She told me when she herself met him he was a really friendly guy.
We used to have to a driving course at a company I worked for and Heath's dad was one of the trainers, my workmate somehow got into a discussion with him about her dad dying and he told her how his son passed away so he understood her pain, she didn't realise it was Heath's dad and he never menitoned who his son was until we told her afterwards who she'd been talking to. Nice, down to earth people his family are.
The ending of Brokeback mountain just makes me bawl every time and of course the joker creepy but so great ! Heath gone way too soon rip xx
My father grew up with Neil Young. They were basically best buds & they stole that hearse together. Neil Young tells of that s**t in his biography.
My mum knew Neil Yonge when they were kids. That is because only 120 people lived in Canada in the 50s and apparently they all knew each other.
My aunt made out with, and then proceeded to puke on Michael J. Fox.
Ya know... a lot of people have joked about the fact that Marty's Mom once tried to make out with a guy who looks just like Marty and wondered about the implausibility of that coincidence. I just had a dark thought: why guess it was a coincidence, and not heredity? Presumably Marty's Dad didn't know, but if he found out his son was a dead ringer for a guy she used to have the hots for, that could be a problem for the marriage.

This barely looks like Madonna anymore. It slightly looks like Megan Fox, but with pink hair. She looked fine before whatever she seems to have had done.

Load More Replies...I have always loved Madonna but whatever she has had done or whichever filter was used, this has done nothing for her. She should have just been herself. 😔
That's not Madonna. That's an imaginative computer-assisted illustration of what Madonna's grandchild may someday look like. Madonna didn't even look at all like that when she was young!
No she didn’t. She looked unique and had her own individuality back then, BUT now she looks like every other “wanna be starlet” in Hollywood.
Load More Replies...Madonna apparently went in and had her face completely redone. I personally think that is ridiculous because you should be proud of who you are. I thought she always promoted this stand on being who she was against the norm of society . That has changed? Don't try and be somebody you are not. Why? You are who you are so be proud of that. I am 65 years old and Madonna, I know for a fact, is the same age so be proud of that. I am. Good grief, if you did not tell me that was Madonna, I would never know it. She was a beautiful woman. Even at her age she was a beautiful woman. Now she is trying to be somebody she is not and I have lost faith in the words that were coming out of her mouth. I always admired and respected her for standing up for what she believed in, I have lost faith in that now. That's a shame.
She always prided herself on being herself until herself started wrinkling and showing her age. Then she panicked and called the best plastic surgeons she could find to keep herself looking young for as long as possible. It's kind of sad and pathetic, really, watching a woman going under the knife to keep trying to look like a teenager?

Load More Replies...According to legend, my mom's friends strung Rob Schneider's underwear up a flag pole at their band camp when he was a Freshman...I brought it up with him a few years back when he was visiting town and he jokingly scolded me for "bringing up that painful memory". In high school he was supposedly a dorky, goofy, kind of annoying but lovable kid...from my own experiences more recently, he's silly and loves to make jokes and everything but mostly he's just laid back and very kind. He funded our town's band program and tries to come home for concerts and to stop by and say hello once in a while. He's a real genuine good guy.
He once took out an ad lambasting a critic who had given his latest film a bad review. The ad said "What do you know about reviewing a movie? Did you win some sort of Pulitzer prize for film criticism?" A different critic, Roger Ebert, said in his next column "Rob, it so happens that I do have a Pulitzer prize for film criticism. And your movie sucks."
An amusing anecdote. I had a love-hate relationship towards Ebert. He was sincere and hated the corruption of criticism that was growing towards the end of his life. He was also a pompous windbag, a pretentious snob before being something before something was something was something. His reviews were always interesting, but never correlated with how good a movie was; famously, he never agreed with Gene Siskel. And if they DID agree on liking a movie, it was certain to be terrible.

My brothers and husband met him in highschool- everyone who knew him agrees he was an a*****e then, but had an excellent musical range and acting range so his movies are tolerated in the household. I think the reason I like him is because I may have seen him.in my Pre-K at the high school my brothers and husband met him, and I have always loved a music man.
Dear former bullies: do not, I repeat, do not contact people you once bullied. They don't want to hear from you. You already tried to ruin their lives for sick selfish reasons. It's not their responsibility to forgive you so you can feel better now. It's just putting more responsibility on someone you've already taken too much from for your feelings, again. I loved Moonlighting as a kid. My parents watched a lot of 80s detective shows - Remington Steele, Murder She Wrote, Simon and Simon, etc. I liked Moonlighting the best because it was so quirky. One of the supporting characters was played by Curtis Armstrong, an ubiquitous 80s nerd on TV and film.

My friends dad punched Bono when they were in school.
The full story:
So I'm slightly hazy about the exact details but the story goes Bono wrote a song (or sang a song) to my friends dad's girlfriend, as you can imagine he didn't take kindly to this creepy and d******d move. So the the next day he punched him right in the money maker!
Friends dad eventually married his girlfriend and they settled down on a very successful lettuce farm. Where they live happily married.
tl;dr Protects his woman by punching Bono in the sweetest thing and lives like a king on his farm, growing 2 kids and a lot of lettuce.
I called Bono fat. I lived in Vancouver in the 90's. Bono and his crew were in a popular restaurant. After several drinks in several bars me and two of my friends went to the same restaurant. My friend says "Hey look that's Bono" I said "No, that's just a fat guy who looks like Bono" This back and forth went on for quite some time. Two girls walking by the restaurant looked in the windows and started screaming that was when I realized my friend was right. When Bono and crew were leaving the restaurant he stopped at our table and looked me in the eye and slowly shook his head. Apparently, I was the only person not to know that U2 was in town. He was fat!
When Bono was 11 or 12 his brother got a job working at an airline. Must have been Aer Lingus, but I can't remember. Anyways, the employees were allowed to take home all the leftover premade uneaten airplane food 'trays'. They ate nothing but those Irish airline meals for years. After his mother died he really came to hate them because then there was literally no other food being made to eat. He promised himself when he became a famous rock star, he'd only choose the best food to eat, and eat all the variety he wanted. So, he has. Good for him.
Load More Replies...My favorite Bono story: during a concert in Glasgow, he got the whole crowd to be silent and then began slowly clapping his hands. The stadium was dead quiet except for his rhythmic clapping. After a short period Bono spoke, saying that every time he clapped his hands a child in Africa died ... From the front row a guy with a thick Scottish accent breaks the silence by screaming, "Well stop doing it then ya evil f*****g bastard!"
The lettuce farm made me laugh. I've never thought about the fact that people have farms for them!
"Protects his woman by punching Bono"? Yeah, that's not at all how this reads; it reads that a guy was singing a song to (or for) a woman and her violent, jealous a*****e of a boyfriend punched the singer in the face due to being very insecure.
Thank you — the cringe is strong here, despite the lettuce farm ending.

Seemed pretty chill at the time, but as the years, and their fame, progressed I was turned off by their self-righteous attitude, esp. Bono's. Tbh I used to like him too then he became super preachy. Although at least he can from what I perceive as laughing at oneself by his reaction to being called fat Bono.

Marilyn Manson went to my elementary and a rival high school of mine. He was much older than I but I have talked to people that knew him. They always said he was quite but very intelligent. They said he was a pretty normal kid.
And then he turned out to be an abusive douchebag who enjoys gaslighting young women.
From what I've read about him, his parents were extremely religious. He became what he is to upset them. I bet it worked!
He got punched in a Dennys for being a creep to some dudes girlfriend lol
He is actually very intelligent... unfortunately that doesn't always equate to social standards.
I heard a story about him when he was a kid his mother told him if he won't pray before going to bed Satan would visit him at night. So he never prayed
My ex, a musician, met him when he and a couple guys from the band came to the bar where my ex was playing. The other two hopped on stage and jammed, while Marilyn sat in the back with two women and talked on his phone most of the night.
The whole "Marilyn Manson" persona is an act like David Jones' David Bowie and Ziggy Stardust or Stefani Germanotta's Lady Gaga. Many professional musicians have onstage personas and are quite normal in person.
I went to high school with Nina Dobrev. She was really sweet to all her friends, but a total b***h to everyone else. Kurt Cobain suffered terribly from both severe scoliosis and untreated issues with his stomach. He made no bones about the fact he was self-medicating. IMO, his addiction was a direct result of the failed healthcare system in the US. When healthcare isn't free, a lot of folks just can't afford it. By the time he could afford it, he was already an addict.

IMO your comment should be the one that's featured up here, not the stupid nonsense that actually is.
Load More Replies...My dad went to highschool with Mike Judge. He said he was really nerdy and weird.
He really should be more famous for Office Space and The Idiocracy.
Load More Replies...He had a hand in Beavis and Butthead too right? I don't find this surprising lol
Could you go ahead and tell us more about Mike Judge? That'd be great.
Doesn't surprise considering the shows/movies he's made. Office space and Silicon Valley are top tier nerdy and weird in the best ways possible. King of the and Beavis and Butt-Head are great as well!
The new Beavis and Butt-Head is kind of meh. They made them too "smart" for lack of a better term. At least in my opinion. I still have the old episodes on my computer and they're funnier in comparison.
Load More Replies...I love Mike Judge. He’s one of the few things that makes Texas cool.
My aunt went to high school with Ellen Degeneres. They weren't great friends or anything, but she was a pretty outgoing social person from what she said. Also, my dad rode his bike with her for awhile.
That one was kind of a shock, I guess. I never really knew anything about her, but a lot of people were taken off guard. Edit: We're name bros!
Load More Replies...My next door neighbor used to brag, to everyone, that he dated Ellen in high school. This was B4 she came out. It was a subject that he never shut up about and frankly I thought was so disrespectful to his wife (she was the sweetest woman). So when Ellen does come out as a lesbian, she mentions having sex with 3 guys and none of it being a pleasant experience. Needless to say, he shut up about dating her. Me being the a*****e tho, I would mention it at least once a week.
I'm really surprised no one picked up on her mean streak earlier. I could only watch her talk show in drips and drabs because she's the person who always did something mean only to quickly interject they were only joking.
Remember the crowd member who grabbed too many free items in the giveaway? (They had a set up where each person could grab one item and this lady grabbed a couple for her family members.) They recorded her doing it, Ellen called her out on the show and made her sit in a seat away from the crowd to shame her. Ick.
Load More Replies...All that c**p about her being a bully is BS. I was a nobody actor rehearsing for a tiny stage show and she walked in on me. Ellen could not have been sweeter nor more encouraging and she had no reason to be other than pure human kindness.
People aren't the same to everybody. She hasn't been consistent in her rudeness. Seems to depend on her attitude for the day or if she likes the person.
Load More Replies...We don't really know what she is like unless in her social circle. Stopped reading gossip, just enjoy entertainers music or performance for what it is.
It's not gossip when you see her do it to people on her show all the time
Load More Replies...I drove Rhett Butler around for a week when she was in town. I took her to a coffee shop and the waitress asked who are you? She told her Ellen Degeneres. She told me if she doesn't know I'm not going to tell her. Rhett told me her sister used to screw the mortician on the embalming table in Marietta, GA. I asked did he say, Lie real still. She said that's why I like you, you say the most off the wall things that crack me up. One lady came up after the show and told her I had a shotgun in my mouth when your show came on. So I decided to not go through with it. She said, Um thanks.
Taylor Lautner. That guy is an arrogant jerk.
So, he was playing himself, basically, in Degrassi The Next Class. (sorry. The guy who played Drew on Degrassi was often mistaken as Taylor Lautner. They look so much alike. https://www.reddit.com/r/Degrassi/comments/exkk3w/not_gonna_lie_i_thought_drew_kinda_looked_like/)
Possibly unpopular opinion but shy can often be mistaken for arrogant. With this short of an entry, I'd need more info before I put any weight on it.
That's so true! My mom was like that in school. Apparently everyone thought she was stuck up since she never talked to anyone but she was DEATHLY shy. She had very few friends, did her hobbies and thought nobody really liked her, didn't think she was pretty or anything. Turns out MANY years later she finds out people had crushes on her but thought she was stuck up and unapproachable. Totally shocked her. She had no clue.
Load More Replies...Apparently we had the same music teacher in elementary, but he had left years ago and he went to a different school. The teacher said he liked to show off his martial arts stuff during 'share time'
He WISHES he was a mediocre actor. FOINE tho.
Load More Replies...How do you know? Please elaborate. What is your association with him?
When that side by side picture of him and Llama came out, I cant ever unsee it. lmao
I was in the same grade as Joel Zimmerman aka Deadmau5. He was not as popular and not nearly as sexy but was interesting nonetheless.
A business associate and friend of mine used to hire Joel to babysit his kids.
He is a DJ and he has a mask that is the head of a mouse
Load More Replies...I used to work at the coffee shop he went too before he was deadmau5.....he was such a douchebag
My aunt went to Principia college with Robert De Niro. They were in drama class together and she called him Bobby and said he was a wonderful person. De Niro still considers himself a Christian Scientist. (Principia college is the only Christian Science college in the world.) I went to junior high school with Valerie Bertinelli. I was in boarding school in England with Kirstin Figuerres, daughter of President Figuerres. Allison Cooke, niece of Alistair Cooke, Susan Vernon Wentworth, a countess, at the age of 12, my bestie, Susannah Shelton, daughter, of the then Ambassador of South Africa to England, and one of my other best friends was Susanna Milton, a direct descendent of John Milton, considered the most significant British writer after William Shakespeare. I’ve lost touch with all of them now. 🥺
A dj calls himself deadmau5. You aren't missing much
Load More Replies...I went to school with Emily Browning (Sucker Punch, Series of Unfortunate Events, etc) She was nice enough from what I spoke to her (we were in similar social groups) but she cheated on a good friend of mine with the drummer from an Australian band, after being in their film clip. So yeah, I have a wee bit of a grudge...
I suspect the band was Evermore, the members are all from New Zealand but the band is based in Melbourne, Australia
Do you have extensive knowledge related to Evermore, or did you Google it?
Load More Replies...Holding a grudge over something someone did to someone else that has nothing to do with you, yeah I’m sure this really wears on Ms. Browning… haha
Went to high school (and middle school) with John Mayer. He was a good guy. We had a number of friends in common but I didn't hang out w/him often. His band ("Villanova Junction") played at graduation, and I don't think anyone thought anything of it at the time. I also went to high school with James Blake but he was a couple of years younger than I was, and I didn't know him. James Blake the tennis player.
There's also James Blake the musician. His stuff is gorgeous. I got to hang out with him for several hours until dawn, going to a warehouse party with lots of local musicians that culminated in a big weirdo jam session. And he made out with my friend. He was a peach.
Load More Replies...Because there's also James Blake the musician. His big break in 2011 was with a cover of a Feist song, Limit To Your Love. It's gorgeous.
Load More Replies...Went to high school with: Bo Burnham: he was 3 years younger than me and really shy at the time. Had an art class together and he started to come out of his shell and crack jokes every now and then. Knew him mainly as the brother of this guy in my grade tho. Also a couple guys that went pro in football (Jon Geoff) including one in my grade (Chris Zardas) who was pretty cool to me. Oh and Brian Kelly, head football coach at Notre Dame went to my high school and college.
My friend's dad had a few classes with Stephen Harper (prime minister of Canada) and he was a huge nerd, got picked on, beat up and was a math god.
Former Prime Minister, thank goodness! I'm Canadian and a whole lot of Canadians, myself included, did not like him or his politics. People used to add stickers to stop signs that said "Harper", as in Stop Harper.
I second this sentiment. I am Canadian too and I loathed him.
Load More Replies...Well, I don't feel too bad for him, considering he's an awful piece of sh*t.
That's kinda harsh for Canadians to put stickers on stop signs, let alone political stickers! I hope nobody got a talking to by the RCMP for it lol. No offense to anyone. Just clean "Canadians are too nice" fun.
The lead singer of the band Envy on the Coast went to my high school. Everyone used to make fun of him and call him "emo kid". I'd say he got the last laugh on that one.
I did a Wiki search: Active from '04 to '10, went on hiatus, reformed as a duo in '16. Have not released an LP since '10, do not appear to have influenced any bands since their own inception, or have made it big in any way. In short, unless having a Wikipedia page gives you the last laugh, OP did not issue the burn they think they did.
Load More Replies...I've met that Fred character from Youtube, he went/goes to high school close to where I live. Unfortunately he's just as annoying in real life as he is in his videos.
Fred, the kid had his own show on Nickelodeon and boy was he annoying. He always did YouTube videos where he'd have a high pitched voice and make stupid jokes or play stupid pranks acting like a baby, That Fred?
I used to think he was so funny when I was 9 and I watched another one of his videos recently and I hated it so much Jesus christ.
Load More Replies...The only Fred on YouTube I know is the demonologist from Most Haunted...
I read that as dermatologist at first glance, had a second of Most Haunted what?? Most haunted zit? Birthmark?? Hahahaa
Load More Replies...
I went to middle school with Megan Fox!
And?..... What was she really like? I know she used to be more modest and pretty but not sultry. She switched to sultry because she thought it would help her acting career.
She really hasn't had any good films since the only two I've seen her in - Jennifer's Body and some other one. If she has been, then I don't think her sultry look has favored her career. She just looks like a cheap, trashy whore. She used to be so pretty, too.
Load More Replies...If I had to deal with the creeps she's had to put up with I'd be a b***h too.
Load More Replies...I went to school with Barry Sanders. He ran with a different crowd but was always friendly.
Barry Sanders was a great runner. And he was smart. He chose to walk away from football instead of limping away from it.
I'm probably the minority here, but I really don't understand the obsession with celebrities. I don't understand what is so cool about having a class with this random famous person decades prior. And? How is that impressive? I don't get it.
I just think it's a cool coincidence, I wonder if anyone ik will become famous 1 day

I wonder what my postman was like in highschool, and that busdriver on line 4, OH and the really nice lady on the phone when I call the theatre for tickets, Garnette Wilkins, anybody went to highschool with her?
Garnette Wilkins! Smashing name! I’d like to borrow it for a character.

The interview with the celebrity expert bothers me. It recapitulates this mythos about *~*star quality*~* as if it's something so magical that only .0001% of people have, like demigods, and that's the only way fame happens. Charisma is a real thing, of course, and I have no doubt some people have more than others. But it's also luck, nepotism, hard work, luck, luck...did I mention luck? The genes for being considered beautiful, oligarchic machinations, and luck. So many people are talented, in so many ways. There are nearly 8 billion people. Celebs aren't magical charismatic eleves that are destined to fascinate us all. Ugh.
I agree. Also, what the people have to say in their stories also mostly contradicts his opinion.

My stepdad, Terry Gustafson, was in India at the same Ashram with the Beatles. My stepdad was a park ranger and was there in his khaki uniform and crew cut in contrast to the Beatles colorful robes and long hair. John Lennon kept on telling him he didn't belong/fit in (in a friendly way) and that he should Get Back, you just need to Get Back. My stepdad is from Tuscon Arizona. (Jojo was a man from Tuscon Arizona...) There is a new movie on Britbox about the Beatles and their time in India. He watched it and was in about three of the photos shown in the movie.
I was having a really crappy day, and this guy plows right into me. I shoved him hard, "What is your problem?!!!" This was the first and last time I ever angrily shoved someone. Turned out his problem was he was literally being chased by a throng of adoring fangirls, like a scene straight out of the '50's. I didn't quite have time to apologize to Corey Haim.
I went to high school with Jim Parsons. We were in the theater dept together and he was/is really, really nice! I am SOOO happy for his success!!!!
