Dolls are a beloved toy out there and most kids love to play with them, although sometimes, people take their fondness for dolls into adulthood and never grow out of them. It is quite trendy today to recreate dolls and repaint their faces to make them look more detailed and realistic, and that is exactly what Spanish artist José Francisco Cerezo Roldan does.
José removes the makeup that doll companies put on and paints his beautiful version. He enjoys creating celebrities and characters from TV shows, books, and movies. The artist makes the dolls look more like human beings and less like big-eyed cartoons with unrealistic proportions.

José is quite popular on Instagram with over 50k followers currently. The artist usually turns the dolls into celebrities or well-known characters from pop culture, movies, and TV shows. He seems to really enjoy pop stars, especially Britney Spears and Beyonce, since we see a lot of dolls resembling them on his page. There are also a lot of renditions of Khaleesi, a character from Game of Thrones. The most popular one is Anne Hathaway's character White Queen in Alice in Wonderland. José does a really good job at capturing the likeness of people and it's usually pretty easy to recognize who it is.
If you're wondering, 'why bother repainting dolls at all?' There's a simple answer: The mass-produced dolls that we see in the shop are usually very plain and have completely unrealistic features. So doll artists have taken it upon themselves to create dolls with more detail and realism. There is a lot that goes into remaking dolls. Some even thread new hair for them, make clothes, even sculpt brand new bodies. There are many videos and tutorials on how to remake dolls. Some people find it relaxing to watch the process. So it's also a pretty relaxing hobby to have. Most of these artists sell the revamped dolls and make a living off of it.
Doll remaking is quite popular here on Bored Panda as well. We have an artist that repaints mass-produced dolls to make them look more realistic, two parts of Ukrainian artist Olga Kamenetskaya painting celebrities and pop culture characters, which you can find here and here, and even an artist that turns Barbie dolls into drag queens from Rupaul’s Drag Race.

These are really awesome! I wish there was a little caption to say who the dolls were meant to represent - I recognised quite a few, but not nearly all of them. Oh well, minor inconvenience.

A looooooooot of white washing here. Most black and asian women don't actually have blue eyes.
Great job(s), but why always such light eye-colours? In the blue eyes, i understand, but when there's black dolls, why not give them nice, chocolate-coloured eyes? Or in the asian ones (the ones that weren't Eurpeanized)
just don't remove the main qualities like the Asian one or the man with makeup, other than that there great keep it up

I'd like to see a repaint of the Lynda Carter Wonder Woman doll!!
It would have been so much more helpful if we'd been told who the character was to begin with! I mean sure, some were kind of "duh" but some were really obscure (especially if you're not into anime or gaming).
It feels more like blended photos of the doll & the real person, than a repainted doll.
If you are interested in doll customisation, YouTube has great artists such as Poppen Atelier, Dollightful, Midnight Jewel, Hextian, DollMotion, Anastazia Custom, Enchanterium, The Doll Fairy, Blank Space Dolls, Selene, Dolls Brand-New Look, Etellan, Earthtolylah, Dollumentary, and probably a few more I don't have in my subscription list. 🤣 I don't customise dolls, but the videos by these wonderfully creative artists are still great to watch - and good for encouragement while doing other crafts. If you really want to see the sausage made, you can watch figure sculpting videos like Ace of Clay or Zan von Zed.
Some of these are so extraordinarily lifelike I wondered whether a photo of the actor had been digitally superimposed on the doll's face. Amazing work!
