How long do you need to look at a picture before you get what's going on in it, Pandas? According to researchers at MIT, the human brain can process visuals in 13 milliseconds. So, you're supposed to get what's in a photograph before you even blink.
But is that really the case with the pics from the r/hmmm subreddit? They usually have no context, feature some detail that's just a tad bit off, or confuse you in general. If you're a fan of weird stuff on the Internet, you'll probably appreciate this newest collection of random as heck pics, so, scroll away!

Reminds me of the time I took a picture of my dog sitting next to a sign saying NO DOGS.

Depends on the actual problem. I very nervously ignored this light for half a year at my last car - only to get told by an amused mechanic later that the only thing wrong with it was a short circuit in the engine warning lamp...
Load More Replies...I think the pumpkins are trying to tell you something. I'd suggest a mechanic needs to check out your car.
It's an '03 Chevy Venture van with 250,000 on it. It's just tellin me, I'm tired boss.

I see Drunk Robot, a Key Sinking in the River, Can't Remember the Oil one, and THIS.
13 milliseconds are hardly enough to fully understand the pics from the r/hmmm subreddit. You might need to do some double or triple takes to fully get the meaning and notice what's really going on there. But people like that kind of stuff on the internet: the r/hmmm subreddit has over two million followers (or internet aesthetes, as they call themselves).
If you're unsure what qualifies for a "hmmm" image, the subreddit has some guidelines. They claim that hmmms are supposed to be textless and rely on the visual only. A good hmmm, according to the subreddit, will "make you think about the context, do a double take, invoke a deeper meaning, or just leave you thinking about how or why they exist."

Load More Replies..."We have an ongoing hostage situation...the suspect has demanded catnip and a squeaky mouse within the next hour or, and I quote, 'I start tossing birds over the side!' Pspspsps has had no impact so far."
That's not a hostage situation. It's Garfield protecting his friends from Bruno, the neighborhood bully cat who wants to have the birds for lunch.
Load More Replies...They return to the same nest every year. I loved having barn swallows on my patio.
Load More Replies...On the weird side of the internet, ripe with communities like r/lowrescrops, r/internet funeral, and r/mildlyinteresting, the r/hmmm subreddit stands out for its dedication to aesthetics. "hmmms should be aesthetic and meaningful, avoid anything that is merely r/mildlyinteresting," the subreddit's bio states.
It's no surprise, then, that the community has "internet as an art" in its description. Thus is the art of the internet: random, nonsensical, sometimes confusing, self-referential, and doused in sarcasm. So what if it takes us a few moments to understand what's happening in a picture? We've got nothing but time to procrastinate when we're online, right?

My husband works for citibank and I cant wait to buy this now. Lol.
Load More Replies...One of my clients was bed-ridden, didn't have much time left. His wife worked, but wasn't earning enough to cover the mortgage plus other expenses. After decades of on-time payments, they fell behind 4mths, and Bank of America foreclosed on their nearly paid off home. Friends came together to pay the arrears plus a few future payments, and the bank said no. They were forced to move. So yeah, burn baby burn.
If you ever had to deal with BOA, you would feel the same way. My wife and I did when her parents both passed. We had to submit the same paperwork no less than a dozen times. Each time it was filled out exactly how they told us to fill it out. Each time the person looking it over told us something was wrong (that the previous person told us to put on the forms). Each time we had to take the form it to A DIFFERENT BANK to have it notarized, because we didn't have an account with BOA and they wouldn't notarized anything for you if you didn't have an account with them. Plus after opening the estate claim at BOA, my wife, her sister and myself all ended up with BOA credit cards opened in our names. None of us applied for one. Just a terrible company. I haven't found any redeeming qualities about them.
Oh dear, my mom had an account there, very small, +- $500. I've been debating whether to bother

I hope this barber is a quick worker, because the customer doesn't sit in a chair, he has to sit with his legs underneath him.
If we were to treat these confusing images as art, then there's no shame in having to look at them just a bit longer than usual. Yet that's not to say that people tend to look at paintings for very long. One survey, for example, found that people look at a painting for an average of 17 seconds.
Hmmm
I would hang this painting above my fireplace. But I don't have fireplace.
Need to get fireplace. Move to new home if necessary, or have pretend fireplace without fire.

The different looks on the faces of the doggies is very amusing! The one at the bottom middle of the pic wants to know if we're seeing this too?
I’m pretty sure these were the beagles who were rescued from a horrible medical testing facility. <3
You're right and poor doggies probably afraid of humans faces.
Load More Replies...The Louvre claims that most visitors look at the Mona Lisa for about 15, and a survey from the MET found that people look at an artwork for about 32.5 seconds. (Maybe just me…) This looks like an artistic drawing of a full symphonic orchestra tuning up in preparation to play! Everybody doing their own thing. A dissonant cacophony. Then that guy up front taps his little stick. Momentary silence until he waves that little stick and, suddenly, the noise turns into a melody, a harmony, until dozens if not hundreds are playing music together that can make you cry. And I wonder how living as a human can be so confusing, messy, confrontational, but we can do this together.
I love the sound of a symphony orchestra tuning up. I don't find it cacophonic at all. If you listen carefully, you can catch individual (generally brass and woodwind) players running through little snippets (typically the difficult bits) of what's on the program. It's like an overture to the whole concert.

Load More Replies...Our brains might be able to categorize the objects in a photograph in milliseconds, yet we're not quite able to understand its full meaning that fast. Just like we need to look at a painting for longer than 30 seconds, we might need longer for that meme or confusing pic in order for our brains to be able to decipher it.
Hmmm
Clever. Two people can have separate keys for different locks and both can open the door.
Actually not a bad idea! If you keep the keys separate, you can have a backup way to get the door unlocked should you lose one of them.
@CP - Wow, yeah, that crazy thought zoomed into my head while looking at it for 15 seconds (milliseconds?).
Load More Replies...Shouldn't you be able to open the door even with the horse shoe and both padlocks? I dont see the horse shoe stuck in anything else its just hanging there. Or am i stupid??
Did anyone ever stop to think that just maybe they have a REASON for why they're using 2 different locks? It's unfair to judge someone, when you don't have any idea on why they felt that using 2 different locks is necessary. This could easily be done on Construction sites to lock up tools or equipment. A Farmer or Rancher can use the same methods to help lockdown gates, because stealing horses, cattle, chickens, hogs, etc., is actually a very REAL thing. It could help keep idiots out of paddocks and fields, especially stupid fūcking teenagers, because yes that is also a thing. I come from a long line, on both sides of my family that is country folk. So, you can call that a Redneck or Hillbilly thing, but we're a helluva lot smarter then you give us credit for.

Load More Replies...The way we see and interpret images is quite fascinating in general. The amount of things that happen all around us and bombard our visual senses is enormous. Our eyes also don't see a stable image all the time: we walk, move our heads and eyes, and even blink, so, the visual input changes constantly. Yet why is the image of the world around us always so stable?
Hmmm

Should probably rephrase that. I clearly saw the outline/shape of a person. Didn't realise it was a real guy until I zoomed in on the eyes
Load More Replies...In 2022, researchers were able to somewhat answer that question. Our brain doesn't analyze every single visual snapshot. Instead, it has a stabilization mechanism. Our brains perceive the average of what our eyes have seen in the last 15 seconds. It's sort of like living in the past: the brain consolidates all the visual input it receives into one impression every 15 seconds.

Trying to interpret every single visual stimulus that happens around us all the time would simply make us go mad. "If our brains were always updating in real time, the world would feel like a chaotic place with constant fluctuations in light, shadow and movement," the study's authors wrote. "We would feel like we were hallucinating all the time."

Looks like someone shook them up before the dots had finished setting.
The second one from the top is not right. Two opposite faces of a die should add up to 7, but that one has 5 and 2 next to each other instead. The same is true for the one below it, 4 and 3 should be across from each other, not adjacent.
Hmmm
I looked it up after seeing things like this on a camping trip. What they're doing is called amplexus; the male clings to the back of the female, so that when she released her eggs, he's right there to fertilize them. Typically all the females in a given area have their cycles synced up, so if you're there on the right evening, you'll hear and see dozens of frogs making their way toward the water and amplexus-ing away. The males are in a hurry to grab a female, and aren't always discriminating--sometimes they'll grab onto a male, or an amphibian of another species, or end up facing the wrong way, but once they're latched on, they don't let go until the process is complete. This is actually one of the better scenarios; the big one in front is a female, so when she lays her eggs, all these guys will do their thing, and they can move on with their lives.
🎶You do the Froggy- Doggy and you turn yourself around, and thats what its all about🎤
That's one of the reasons why we don't notice subtle visual changes, say, a person aging. The researchers claim that this visual smoothing by the brain is also responsible for us not recognizing stunt doubles in movies sometimes. "The brain sticks to the past because the past is a good predictor of the present," they claim.

Sometimes you have to improvise when you don't have a cannon and you're trying to faithfully recreate the 1812 Overture!
Only the bullet hitting something is percussion, otherwise it’s an air instrument. A piano is percussion because the hammers hit the strings but a harpsichord is not because the strings are plucked. I suspect there’s no bullet so it’s not even really percussion. Poor orphan instrument, whatever it is.
Load More Replies...That's Leopold Mozarts's "Jagdsymphonie" ("Hunting Symphony"). Leopold was Wolfgang's dad, and he was not shy in using weird instruments or using stuff in an unexpected musical way. The Jagdsymphonie calls for hunting horns and cymbals (in the photo), a string complement, "gunshots" and three hound dogs (often a recording is used).
I'm glad they're finally doing something about those people who always walk in late for the concert.
But the past probably won't help you interpret the images from this list. Still, let us know which ones you liked the best by upvoting them, and don't forget to comment which ones confused the most! I wish I knew the person who had this done, so I could sneak in and shave them bald while they slept. But badly. Like a 4yo would do it.
My brother had to start getting their elderly cat shaved down because he couldn't keep himself clean anymore
Load More Replies...This looks like a cat breed with little fur and that someone photoshopped the face and paws of a regularly furred cat onto it. It doesn't look like someone shaved the cat.
Agreed. The R.H. side of the furred cat's face extends too far beyond the more bald cat's face.
Load More Replies...Why the fúck would anyone do this?? Cats use their fur to regulate their body temperature. I’m so sick of people doing stupid things to pets because they think it’s funny.
I hope it was for a medical reason :( Kitty doesn't look like a longhair, so it shouldn't have needed a shave due to matting.

Epidurals are usually bliss for below-the-waist surgeries..however, this mum is a bit well over the top checking her messages during the surgery. In what future will her baby have/a cell phone always next to him/her and mum taking half notice of the child when feeding or other baby needs?
