Designers are supposed to make life easier and our homes more aesthetic; however, some of their "creations" leave us wondering—what are those people smoking? I get it; not everyone in the industry is Dieter Rams, and clients have an innate ability to behave like insufferable toddlers, but certain ideas should never leave the drawing board. From a cup that's impossible to drink from without poking your eyes out to staircases that lead to nowhere, this list, compiled by Bored Panda, showcases design fails that are as funny as they are impractical.

This is far better than my f***ing toothpaste, which has microscopic tabs, or my blood pressure tablets which have a perforated seal that never lines up with the edge of the packet to break along the perforations. At least with this, once you manage to lift the tab, it is a decent size to get hold off.

So, how do we know if a particular design is good or bad? Jared Spool, an American writer, researcher, and usability expert, said the first test begins with a person walking up: they either know how to use it at that moment or they don't.

"If they don’t know how to use it," Spool said, "you have to look at the knowledge they came up with for the design — what we call current knowledge — as well as the knowledge that they need to achieve whatever their objective is."

"Whether that's getting money out of the automatic teller machine or looking at a radiological scan and diagnosing an anomaly in the chest cavity, they have to have knowledge to get that task done. If that knowledge is far away from the knowledge they currently have then they’re going to have to either learn how to do it or the design is going to have to be simplified so they no longer need that knowledge," he explained.

The space between the two is called the knowledge gap, and Spool said a design is intuitive (good) when that gap is very small.

"It could be so small that when I walk up to the design, I instantly know what to do because everything in my previous life’s experience has taught me how to deal with this, even if it’s something I’ve never seen before – I can walk up to an automatic teller machine that I’ve never seen before, and I can operate it because my experience with other automatic teller machines has told me what to do, for example," he said.

"Or I get trained, but that happens so quickly that I don't even notice it. There’s messaging on the screen, or there are helpful graphics and animations, and those things ... tell me what to do, and it takes me milliseconds to traverse that knowledge gap. That's intuitive. Something is intuitive when I walk up to it, and I know what to do."

That might sometimes sound like an impossible task because the world keeps changing, but Spool believes that humans don't.

"Humans haven't changed; we haven’t evolved one bit. In fact, here in the United States, it’s possible we’ve gone in the other direction," he said.

"Technology changes, but people stay the same, their behavior stays the same, their ability to respond to something stays the same. How big our fingers are, how fast we move, what our reaction times are, how quickly we interpret information, all of that has stayed the same. The problems that people have, they don't change – we still need to communicate, coordinate, and collaborate."

Public benches get more and more uncomfortable every year. There are very few in the park by my home, and I can’t sit there for fifteen minutes because my body hurts. It’s impossible to relax and read sitting in one of those benches.

Good morning, agent. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, involves putting three taquitos on a plate and heating them in the microwave on high for a time of one to one and a half minutes. Should the need for putting six taquitos arise, raise the time needed by one minute. Let them stand for an additional minute. We will warn you: Product will be hot. Microwaves and ovens vary, heating times may require adjustment. As always, should any member of your team be caught or killed, the secretary will disavow all knowledge of your actions. Good luck. These instructions will self-destruct in five seconds.

Spool continued to describe how this manifests in people's relationship with design.

"What I mean is on the process side of things people still want everything to be so easy that they don’t have to do any work. They don’t want to have to invest in figuring out what the design should be; they just want to be able to wave their hand and make it happen."

He has also observed "this constant reluctance to invest in good design" and believes it's partially because there's no pressure for it.

"A lot of organizations just don’t have this basic sense that design is going to make a difference, and that’s coupled with the fact that many people aren’t literate in design. By literate in design, I mean they can’t tell the difference between a good design and a bad design."

So when our grandparents struggle with a new device or app, it might not be their skills that are the problem—maybe the design just isn’t good enough.

    David

OneHappy, I don't see how this would prevent a fire. It is unlikely any stove would get hot enough to actually "burn" the pan. You could ruin the surface coatings, which could happen whether or not the pan is at an angle. Meanwhile, if someone is cooking with oil, a poorly balanced pan increases the chance of fire since it takes less of a bump to tip the pan.

I’ve no idea why you’re getting downvoted on this comment. I have a gas hob like this and some of my pans are the same (although that looks like a big pan to have the issue - milk pans are the worst), it IS NOT a problem on an induction hob as the area the pan sits on is much bigger - generally you just have to balance the pan a bit differently but it’s still annoying.

Have a pan like that, and a gas stove. Solution is having the handle aligned with the grid. It's a very good pan, inherited from my father who was an excellent cook and used flat burners. He only had quality stuff, so I guess the design (of his pan) is supposed to have a balance once the pan is filled with stew, steak or the like

If you don't have a dosette box, this would mean you could keep track of whether you have taken a tablet for the day. If you only take 1 med, it can seem annoying having to transfer them to another container and this should help. I know I have had days where I'm not sure I've taken my tablets and had to check the dosette box for the day. You could take them in a different order because, as you say, it's the same d**g, but if you are like me you would want the reassurance you have taken the one for that day. I have a dosette box, but recently I haven't filled it because it takes so long to do it because I take so many meds and I've just been too tired to deal with it. Apologies for the rambling, I am very tired.

Following this logic, we can say that a good design renders intention well and matches what the users need. A bad design, on the other hand, doesn’t render intention well and doesn’t match what the users need.

"You can measure design on a scale of frustration to delight," Spool suggested. "When people have complained about a bad design it’s always because the design is frustrating them. When they’re enamored with a great design, it’s because it’s delighting them."

That's not necessarily true. Depending upon the type of screen, it may actually only take power to change the display. This is how e-ink/digital paper works. My B&O remote has a similar always on display - the batteries last for years.

    Forrest Hobbs

Modern LCDs like that use almost no power to run a static display. *IF* the device is properly designed, putting it in the "off" state will stop the thermometer circuitry running, and generally shut down almost everything except the power to the LCD. All it needs to keep a static display going is an applied electric field to keep the liquid crystals in the right state - in principle, it doesn't need to draw any current at all to do that and what current drain there is, is down to leakage which they've been trying to reduce to negligible levels for many decades. If it's a device that's used for an eight hour working day five days a week, the fact that it's got an "oFF" display like that for when it's not in use shouldn't make any practical difference to the battery life.

I have seen a similar (and much less pretty) concept in my area, but at least there is a proper roof on ours. The perforated panels are to give (some) visibility of an approaching bus, but not be vulnerable to having a brick put through it by the local yobs. Unfortunately, because of the topography of the area, we have a tendency for sideways rain, which means the rain just comes in through the holes. Not as much as it would with no panels at all, but still pretty miserable in there. Of course, the alternative would be to make sure the local kids have something to do other than putting bricks through bus shelters, but apparently that's unreasonable

In my city, the bus company went to this style of design because the company got tired of replacing bus stops that jerks set on fire. Upside was that the open design allowed riders to enjoy fresh air. Downside...blizzards of snow, rain, ice, dirt.

They use thick perspex (roof/sides and/or metal roof -no longer using glass), over the Pond rather than cutouts like this one. I live in a semirural area, so a lot of ours are still the brick ones (dark and occasionally smelly, tbh.) but they've removed the original wooden benches. The few new ones we have, that have some kind of 'seating' bench (if there's any), are either very narrow/short, or one you can just lean against. It seems many countries despise the homeless.

However, Spool said some organizations (designers) believe it's not important whether or not they frustrate their users, partially because they feel like the users don't have a choice.

"For instance, if you work in a company and you want to get reimbursed for the expenses that you made during travel, you can use the travel expense system, and if it’s incredibly frustrating, they don’t care because that’s the only way you’re going to get your travel expenses reimbursed," he said.

So it very well might be that we will continue seeing bad design and creating such lists no matter how far the craft itself progresses.

The other thing you can do is buy those really short extension cords. Like a foot long with a male plug at one end and a female plug at the other. Still, you shouldn’t have to… these designs have not kept up with the power requirements of todays devices, but still it is cheaper than buying a new power strip.

I once made the mistake of buying one of these with two rows of sockets. Earth pin to earth pin (UK plugs). Surge protected too. Seems like a great idea, until you realise that 50% of the plugs you want to put into a surge protector are adaptors with the wires at the top, not the bottom 🤦🏼‍♀️

Why? So we can buy more piggyback extenders? There should be a mandatory plug size, width, and style, so they all fit side by side. So many that do not fit even a double wall plug because of the angles, as the black one shows above in the pic.

They do this because the mouse is unable to be used while it's being charged. So instead of fielding questions and complaints from people saying it doesn't work while it's being charged, they just make it so you can't use it while it's being charged. In a way, that makes it a really good design; but for a stupid product.

This was designed by Jony Ive. He's an award-winning product designer, but he has a fëtīsh about making connector ports hidden and inaccessible. He doesn't do work for Apple anymore, but they still refuse to redesign it.

    Forrest Hobbs

8 months ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

The issue with that particular design is that if you gave it a charging port in the obvious place, the whole mouse would be higher. By putting the charging port underneath, you can build a lower-profile mouse which is easier on the wrist than higher profile designs - at which point the difference matters is down to the individual. I suppose the thinking is that you put it on to charge when you've finished using it as and when it needs it. All engineering design is about compromise. Whether this particular design has the compromise right is a matter of personal taste. It's not a bad mouse to use. If you want a genuinely terrible Apple mouse, look for the "hockey puck" design: https://www.slashgear.com/810251/why-people-couldnt-stand-apples/ and https://www.macworld.com/article/194643/macat25-worstproducts.html

Apple seem to have a blind spot for design of a mouse. They’ve never made an average one, let alone a good one. Given their whole shtick is ‘ for creative people’ they’ve yet to make a mouse that works with creative programs such as Adobe suite,.

Not a design flaw. An assembly flay. Rotate one plate 180 degrees and then the patterns match up. On many "waffle iron" type appliances the plates are removable for cleaning. I can't tell if that is an option here but if it is, just flip one plate around.

Hot take: apart from not understanding why you would want a rug as small as the one in the upper left (unless it was symmetrical and maybe a bath mat), and obviously not including the "poop/vomit" parts, these rugs are kind of neat. They look like topographical maps!

Old computergames did that too. In order to install the game, you had to agree to the terms and conditions, but you could only read those after you put the disk into the computer, and in order to do that, you needed to break the seal on the box. So you just had to hope that they didn't put in condition that your first born child was now theirs.

This is old, the newest two versions attach with magnets and charge. This was the first version and their powered pencils are better than any other tablet / pencil combination. I’ve used both apple and non-apple versions, the accuracy and sensitivity are better on the ipad. I use them for designing stuff for rock bands (t-shirts, posters etc) and I’m immune to the haters, I use what works best.

You had me at "$100 for a stupid touch pencil" The charging connection just begging to be broken is the flies on top of the poop cake. I thought the price was an exaggeration but I googled and.. NOPE! Some cost more, some a bit less. And apparently some knock off ones claiming to be apple given they were "second generation" but selling for $17 instead of over 100.

The real reason is because they think pockets, especially big ones ruins the slim design of the pant, and makes it look bulky in the pocket area. So having tiny or no pockets keeps the silhouette they had in mind for the pant

In some ways, it's probably better than a chair that you have to try and shuffle under you as you sit, inevitably end up too far from the table, and have to scrape across the ground. I'd want a back on the seat, though I could see people forgetting, leaning back, and ending up on the floor. Possibly with neck injuries. Yeah, never mind, I can live without a back rest here.

The taps aren't a problem (I have split taps, hot on the left, cold on the right - in the US for anyone curious), but the sink design definitely leaves something to be desired. Why is the left side so severely angled? It looks so wrong.

    Max Fox
    Community Member
8 months ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

This was the way that all taps were for a very long time. Running water started as cold only, so when hot running water was added, it didn't occur to home builders to have a tap which mixes the two streams. People didn't wash their faces directly from the stream, but mixed the water in the basin and scooped it up, like they always used to do. Same for tubs - people didn't take warm showers before there was hot running water, they mixed the hot and cold water in the tub, and the taps were set up to allow them to continue to do this.

Oh, this makes sense. Thank you for the information. I would feel a bit yuck washing my face with water from the sink basin. In my head, once the stream water touches something, it’s not as clean anymore. I certainly hated when op mentioned their hands touching the side of the sink. 😰

I live in a house that's over 100 years old, and it had a sink (original) similar to this in the bathroom. We remodeled and made a second bathroom in the basement and put the original sink in there. It's ok because it doesn't get used all the time.

But how do you use that in practice for tasks like washing your hands? I see no other options that either go with the cold alone, burning your hands with the hot one if it is warm enough to k**l listeria, or waste a lot of water and time filling up the sink with a mix, or quickly switching between scolding your hands and coolling them down by moving them between two waterstreams comming for the tpas. Neither of those "solutions" seem optimal.

Nah - that charger design is done the right way for a conventional UK socket. The problem is the poor installation of the socket - there's supposed to be vertical clearance below. The chargers that are a pain are the ones where the body of the charger extends above the socket - all the more so when the lead comes out of the top. UK plugs have the lead coming out the bottom, and multi-way socket strips are built with that assumption - if you've got two rows of sockets, chargers/power bricks doing it the wrong way block at least one other socket.

Poor design from Apple perhaps but it’s an oversized plug, there’s a limit to what you can do without blocking plugs left and right or having it stuck out so far it levers itself out of the plug. As another point - Apple used to provide a long lead you could use as well as the interchangeable top so this wasn’t an issue.

    Forrest Hobbs
    Community Member
8 months ago (edited) Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

In this case, Apple's followed the conventional correct design approach and made the charger extend below the socket which is exactly what you want for standard UK sockets and multi-way socket strips - until the past few decades, all power bricks/chargers/etc in the UK were made like that. The problem here is down to the stupid mounting of the socket strip in question. When the chargers/power bricks extend above the socket, they block out other sockets if you're using them in a multi-row socket strip. Don't ask me why, but a lot of modern power bricks here in the UK don't just extend above the socket, but they also have the lead coming out of the top - which is just plain silly. It makes them much more of a trip hazard (ask me how I know...) and also means they bend sharply, which can cause them to fail due to the wire inside breaking (ask me how I know...)

Is this a train? If so I think both buttons probably work exactly the same. They are used to communicate directly with train staff. But if its a bus it could be in a disabled area for passengers in wheelchairs and accidently pushing the SOS button is not going to call emergency services it will call the bus driver.

    Charity Angel
    Community Member
8 months ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

It looks like a pair of rails out of the window, so it's definitely a train. However, the SOS button is still much more likely to connect to the driver or guard than emergency services (in the UK, at least). I ended up having to use one once (got locked in the loo), and the button in there said it goes to the driver. It doesn't bring the train to a grinding halt like the old communication cords used to, or summon the emergency services. I have to say, I like the idea of a button for request stops - my local station is a request stop and I've never seen this on a train before. Great idea - no emergency, but I'd like to use the upcoming request stop please. On buses, the stop bell in the wheelchair area is a different colour to the rest, and it makes a different sound, to alert the driver that their disabled passenger is getting off, so they'll need the ramp.

    Charity Angel
    Community Member
8 months ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

It's not the understanding that's the issue here - it's the placement. Those would be so easy to knock by accident - especially when first getting on, or when just about to get off, when you're sorting out your baggage. Personally, living at a request stop, I think having a "stop" bell on a train is a great idea, and I suspect these are in the priority seating area, so they've been made easy to use for disabled folks. I'd agree with Mavis about being the wheelchair space, except that the wheelchair space usually has a different shaped table to make it easy to get into. (At least, they do in the UK, which it looks like this is.)

Hate this design - subtlety / aesthetic over ease of use. A slightly (`20%) larger and brighter image & text is insufficient to be immediately obvious. Simply putting a high contrast border around the image, like others do, would make it immediately obvious. I invariably have to click a couple times to be sure what is selected.

When I bought my house, a double sink like that was there. Quite new (house was divorce victim) and still not annoying enough to spend money on replacing it. There are more of these stylish design failures installed, like a white, rough, fluid gulping stone kitchen countertop. Still there, same reason.

Wow! Fat Henry was determined to be completely wrong 4 times on this post. The only problem here is that the spout needs to be rotated 45° counter-clockwise. You'll likely find fasteners underneath that just need to be loosened to allow the spout to be rotated, then tightened again. It's possible that they tightened the fasteners without bracing the spout, and the spout rotated with the fasteners.
