“People That Don’t Hate Their Jobs And Make A Decent Wage, What Do You Do?” (50 Answers) I am a kennel attendant. I care for and feed both dogs and cats. One of my daily requirements if I have time to do it, is literally to play with a dog/cat or puppy/kitten. It’s called animal enrichment. It’s meant to help prepare them for a life outside the shelter. Doesn’t even feel like a job.

I also disagree with that comment! I know a lot of dog people. Many of us couldn't have children for various reasons and therefore treat out pet(s)as we would our children which often means spoiling the cr*p outta them! If I had to put mine in a kennel or day care I'd definitely pay good money for the best care they could possibly get! Heck I'd probably give cash tips for extra love and treats :)

The kennel attendants at my vet didn't make much, they also had to do a lot more than clean...it's all about where you work and who you work for.

Sure, if you enjoy poverty. I was in the pet industry and the jobs are mostly customer service. Low pay, low status and the only ones who care are the animals.

I was a kennel attendant for a few months in college. It was good it was just a summer job because the pay was s**t. Also, it was the volunteers who walked and played with the dogs. My job was not at all fun, and it f****d with my mental health a lot.

“People That Don’t Hate Their Jobs And Make A Decent Wage, What Do You Do?” (50 Answers) School janitor. $30/hour. 40 hours a week, 12 months a year. I get a s**tload of awesome medical/dental benefits, paid vacation, sick days, every provincial and federal holiday off paid. However, the real perk that I f*****g love, is that I work alone. Once the teachers leave, I have the building to myself. I see my boss once a month, if that. I just show up, put on my favourite podcasts, do my job and go home, money shows up in my account twice a month. I might speak 100 words a shift. It’s absolutely glorious. About the only thing I don’t like about it are the crappy hours (3-11pm, followed by 7-3 during the winter/spring/summer breaks, but you get used to it), and the lazy f*****g teachers that make my job harder than it needs to be. Overall, I’d give it a solid 8.5/10

However, I had a friend who owned a dog boarding facility, ending up selling it because of the stress. Running a small business reequires a lot of knowledge and paperwork, caring for 30+ dogs daily is not easy. Every dog has different needs, food, exercise,, meds etc. You can never be off the property without leaving someone in charge. Every cage must be cleaned daily, sometimes more than once. Many dog owners are VERY hard to please. It is a 24/7 12 month job that has occasional fun spots.

“People That Don’t Hate Their Jobs And Make A Decent Wage, What Do You Do?” (50 Answers) I work at a pet store (only supplies, no animal sales) and make $18 CAD/hr. That might not sound 'decent' but it's better than minimum wage with no meaningful increase in responsibility (aka stress) compared to any other retail worker. In fact, my work environment is lower stress than any other retail/food job I've had and the owner has a keen interest in our well-being. Yearly raises, Christmas bonus, profit sharing, get paid our full scheduled shift if it's shortened or cancelled for weather, aiming to become a living wage employer with promises to increase wages beyond that so long as the business continues to grow. Plus no one asks 'why' if I turn down a shift or decline to stay later. Respect for personal time is huge. I'm treated like a human being, not a robot with no life outside work.

Your boss is great. The sad thing is all the things OP mentions are what every job should be: a job you enjoy, where you are treated with respect, you get a decent salary, and where you can work to live and not the other way round ... Unfortunately, for millions of people that sounds like an unreachable dream. More and more companies are treating people like slaves.

If it's like the pet store I went to today they let customers bring in their pets. When I brought my new pup looking to get a collar that fit and some toys half the staff in the place wanted to give him a hug. Not a bad retail job if you get to hug a pup or kitten a day. Well, at least it's a nice bonus anyway.

I love this one because there is nothing intrinsically awesome about this job, it's just the attitude of the person doing it. They could look at it as tedious and boring, but instead choose to view it as full of meaning. ANY job can suck and ANY job can be awesome. Mostly it's about how you choose to experience it.

No offense to this poster, and the job sounds great, but I feel like if you're skilled enough to do something like this, the world is really open to you. I personally would prefer to read about jobs for people who aren't as skilled and have been stuck doing crappy customer service jobs. Washing ducklings and working in a kennel is nice but I'm wondering if those are part time jobs? I'm not sure how you make a living wage doing it. It sets you up for this big let down once you find out. You don't hate your jobs because, yeah, you work part time and/or have another source of income allowing you to do this. Do you think people wouldn't choose more fun jobs if they could? Do you think people work crappy jobs because they love being on their feet all day and arguing with stupid people? I feel like some of the posts on this list are a little misleading.

“People That Don’t Hate Their Jobs And Make A Decent Wage, What Do You Do?” (50 Answers) Im a librarian and part of my job is organising and creating workshops for children/adolescents regarding STEM. So I get to fiddle around with 3d printers, lasercutters and all kinds of cool things. On the side I also do graphic design and build websites since my previous job was web developer. My job is different every day and since I work for the government the benefits are really good. Only downside is the pay but I gladly earn a little less to do a creative job where I can basically do what I want.

I spent my whole career as an archivist at a major university library. It had great benefits, the work was fulfilling, fellow archivists and librarians were interesting to work with, and the university has a beautiful campus. I loved it.

Hospice nurses are a special, wonderful, extremely caring and very rare breed! Having dealt with Hospice 3x in my life, it's easy to see how much you truly care about your patients and their families. I've never seen one lose their temper, raise their voices, speak unkindly, fail to answer questions over & over, putting their patients & families ahead of their own needs,... I could go on and on. [[[HUGS]]] Thanks for all you do!

Thank you to all you wonderful hospice workers! You were there for me when my father passed and took care of a lot for me (funeral was pre arranged so his nurse made the call to the funeral home) so I could grieve. I even received periodic phone calls from them for a year just checking on me to make sure I was okay. I cannot praise you all enough for your kindness and expert care. My dad passed very peacefully and comfortably in his home the way he wanted I don't think that would have been possible if not for his amazing hospice team.

Farmer here. In the winter I can be in knee deep snow with numb toes and fingers fixing fence, and in the summer I can be working on an irrigation system with a heat index of 110°F. I never feel like I'm actually working. Life feels like an open world RPG with somewhat vague deadlines to meet throughout the year. The hardest part is keeping yourself motivated so you don't fall behind. We start planting in mid April, but we've been working on the planter for most of this week and should be field ready tomorrow. I could sleep in till noon every day if I chose to but the seasons are changing....

What they forget to tell you: no safety nets, no security, no safe way out. No holidays, no vacations, your animals need constant care if you have them and farmwork never ends, even in winter there's always work to do. Things to prepare. If you get sick, like getting cancer or having a bad accident, all you worked for is most likely doomed and you'll be left with a pile of shambles and depths.

I lack depth perception and the tinted glasses you have to look through so you are not blinded by the torch made it so much worse. I somewhat agree. I do feel some people who hate their job are actually at terrible jobs, or terribly managed jobs, and just don't bother to get out of it out of fear and the misconception there's nothing else out there for them, or that they'll end up at another terrible job. Other times, yes, it's all in their minds, their attitude, how handle the job and what they think will make them happy. The latter people will never be happy no matter how much their situation improves.

It was definitely a personality clash as she had no complaint as to my work ethics. I did my job & minded my own business, but that wasn't good enough for her. Days are long, but there’s something amazing about finishing out a day by making a musicians show look as incredible as they sound. Used to tour, but hopped off the road because my partner and I had a kid, so now I’m working at local venues, and while you don’t build the same relationship as you do on the road, working a different show every time you go in means needing to be prepared for anything, it’s all very rewarding, and while the days can be super long, they’re very rarely dull. And I mean, I get paid to go to concerts, so that’s also a nice touch.

While yes, some people do exploit those who are less IT inclined (I've seen people charge over $1000 just to change a headline in a website... YIKES) Keep in mind that doing actual IT (as opposed to software development) is a job that in and of itself doesn't require much in the routine but is massively critical during emergency. It's like saying a fireman is exploitive when there are no fires. When there is an emergency? All hell breaks loose.

Seen this too much in IT - one person becomes too valuable - something happens and then there is no IT then no Company... If you do not understand this is IT terms - think of it simply as you have a car that always runs as your "mechanic" does everything for it. The mechanic fuels it as only the mechanic knows what fuel, where to get it and where you put it in the car. The mechanic even has the box of special "tools" that the car requires as no others will "work". Suddenly for some reason the mechanic stops working for you - such as death, maybe you fell out, maybe you did not pay enough, etc - you cannot get in the car, when you get in the car it will not start, you cannot check the fuel as you do not know how and there are no "tools" if you wanted to fix it. Yes, you maybe able to get another mechanic in but it is not that simple as it is just another car. And the new mechanic may find the engine compartment is locked.... Even if the mechanic gets it back on the road - the SatNav is permanently set to Polish language, only 3 out of 4 electric windows work - the other just randomly opens and the car now breaks down regularly just before pay day...

“People That Don’t Hate Their Jobs And Make A Decent Wage, What Do You Do?” (50 Answers) I work in a logyard in S Oregon. Log trucks come in and are unloaded. The load is rolled out on the ground, and I scale the logs. I measure the lengths and diameters, calculate the gross volume in board feet, and make deductions based on defects such as frost seams, insect damage, burn scars, lightning strikes, etc. I work outside, so it can be rough in the winter/summer, but it keeps me moving, and it's an interesting gig. Been doing it about 6 years now. AMA

I work in retail, in the production side. I mainly sort clothing in a specific order of style, and then put the clothes out on the sales floor. I also get to put the tags on the clothes. It's harder work than it sounds, as quotas are tight and I'm working in a loose production line team. So, I basically have to keep up with several people. But the managers are helpful and the team encourages each other. Some days are tough and I've had a few anxiety attacks, mental breakdowns. That's more about my inner problems than what's going on with everyone else. It doesn't happen as often as my last job, which was every day. I get to sort and organize, which I love doing, and get to see some cool stuff we get in. I get 50% off on second hand soft items. My movie collection is booming. 2 weeks of vacation a year. Health benefits. Customers are overall pretty chill. I've not yet felt intimidated nor abused by a customer.

I'm a therapist. Dealing with insurance is the worst but it's a small part of the job. The pay is usually livable. It's pretty easy to find work in most states. I'm in private practice now so I take flexibility over benefits. I've always had supportive supervisors and a good community of co-workers when I did agency work. You hear some deeply f****d up stories and it can be draining to hold space for people's trauma but these things happen and it feels good to be a support to the people that have lived them.

I studied psychology in college. Wanted to either a middle school counselor, work with testing or social worker. After doing some work at a clinic for kids (8 to 16), I had to rethink it. Mostly I heard stories - physical, sexual, emotional, verbal abuse - these kids suffered from the very people who were supposed to love them. Parents, family members, adults in positions of authority, foster parents (they & their kids, or allowing other foster kids to abuse them). I had a hard time not getting attached to some of them, especially the younger ones. It broke my heart to see them hurting and hearing what they were going through

There's a balance. Care too much and you'll be really good at it, but won't last very long at all. Don't care very much and you can manage indefinitely, but won't be very helpful. For me the Goldilocks zone has been to care very much when I'm sitting across from the client, but letting it go as soon as they leave the office.

Get to see patients 4 hours a day doing med reconciliation keeps things fresh too. No real complaints besides administration being greedy a******s occasionally.

This is what my bf does. It's not really considered a positive, good thing to do, as carers do rely on benefits. Some people would rather carers put their parents in a senior's home and get a "real job". However, they really are doing the very thing a salaried caregiver does, but without a living wage. Carers usually live with their parents. Most of the time it seems like the carer is just chilling at home all the time. But they're really helping to take care of the home, tending to their parent's needs and handling emergencies, which do come up time to time out of the blue. My bf rarely is able to get out on his own much and half the time he's super bored. But he loves his parents too much to just toss them in a care home.

Computational biologist. I'm a classically trained cellular and molecular biologist that specializes in computer analysis of biological data. I work in rational drug design, so more or less I receive concepts for for drugs from staff, do some genetics and modeling work, and generate molecule designs that I send off to a robot to synthesize. They screen them to see which work best, and those that show a favorable combination of potency and specificity ultimately proceed to becoming drug candidates and going into clinic. It's nice in that I can frequently work from home. There's lots of problem solving. It's nice mash-up of computer science and biology. The company and my peers are all great. And it's still got that kind of cutting-edge this-is-the-future-today feel to it.

“People That Don’t Hate Their Jobs And Make A Decent Wage, What Do You Do?” (50 Answers) I'm a paralegal at an attorney's office. I essentially do all the writing and research for cases and assemble the files and information an attorney needs for trial. I thought about going to law school, but during my internship clerking for the county courthouse I found that people with Bar cards were working clerk jobs like me, saying there's a too many lawyers out there to get a job. I decided that throwing down 6 figures on law school and not even having a job guaranteed at the end is too big of a risk, and instead got a paralegal certificate for a fraction of that price, and have been doing paralegal work for 10 years now. It's not crazy money by any means, but $40k+ a year supports me and my family and that's fine by us.

I’m a paralegal working in high conflict family law. The cases are insanely interesting - and downright insane a lot of the time. I have the authority to determine which clients and cases to take on, so we fight for the bullied and abused. It’s my job to dig through the lies, twists & secrets. Subpoena records, witnesses, build evidence and court submissions. Finally, a lot of case law research to back up different aspects of the case, while anticipating the strategy of the opposing counsel in order to prepare and stay ahead of their next move. Base salary inc. health benefits, paid vacations ($73k) plus overtime for trial cases.

Air Traffic controller. Made around $120k last year with overtime. Staffing sucks. Availability of leave sucks. Tons of mandatory OT. But I still love my job. 10 years in, 13 years until eligible for retirement. Forced retirement in 19 years.

This is an awesome career. My in-laws were both ATC's after retiring from primary careers. They made great money, were able to travel all over the world on frequent vacations, saved and invested enough to live very well in old age, and left a sizable inheritance to their several grown children. RIP both of those party animals. They left behind hundreds of friends and loved ones. Lives well lived.

I had the opposite experience in a similar role with Government. People who know nothing about data questioning the reporting they're given, from the data they supplied: "is this data right?" "my manager said it should be higher/lower." Nope, that's what I was given. "By who?" By your manager. 😱

Tattoos are the stupidest fad that has come along in decades! Look at the beautiful skin that is ruined by stupid ink pictures of nothing you can make out. I would much rather admire a pretty girl's skin than a stupid ink picture that will turn into a 'blob' in about 7 years... IMHO!

Sales. There are annoying aspects as with any job. But it’s a very people-oriented business that draws people who like to talk and laugh and have fun whenever they can. The added benefit of having leverage over your employer with regards to how much $$ you’re bringing in allows you a ton of freedom with regard to how you conduct your day and year. Nobody cares if you take a month off every year when you’re making the company a couple million dollars every 12 months. Unlimited paid sick time. Really no such thing as UNPAID time off actually. Company car, phone, company fuel card for all my gas. Gaming PC for working from home paid for by company. If you’re semi-competent and minimally social I really couldn’t recommend it enough.

I'm extremely extroverted, prefer being around people to being alone, don't like getting bored. But I HATED sales, even though I was decent at it. I'm not good at being nice if you're being a total douche to me for no reason, I tend to yell back after being verbally attacked. Made ok money, but it wasn't for me.

while there were elements of working retail I didn't enjoy, I feel like it really suited me. I worked for a skincare/haircare/bath company and the training was very in depth about ingredients and consultations and so on. and I loved it. I loved seeing regular customers return, and improvement in their skin that I'd advised them what to use to help, and it was pretty fun. I liked bland clothing retail before that. I enjoy giving good customer service in retail situations. I needed to stop working as I'm an unpaid carer eventually, but retail work was by far my favourite line of work. even if it was sometimes annoying or frustrating, and there were bad customers.

Really? I was in that field and H-A-T-E-D it. half the time you waste on doing checks that are forced by regulators and the company doesn't actually care. When you find problems, you get yelled it cause you are making them more work. If you don't find problems you get yelled out for slacking off. Pay was good, sure. But it was a horrible job and most of the time completely meanigless.
