Going to the doctor's doesn't always turn out what we think it will be. Misdiagnosing, gaslighting, and poor communication are just some problems patients have to deal with. In fact, in 2022, 60% of Americans said they had recently had a bad experience with a healthcare provider.

Just a few days ago, a woman on Twitter (X) asked other people to share their worst encounters with a doctor. The thread quickly filled up with stories from the doctor's office featuring some questionable medical professionals. We know doctors are people too, but some of these docs truly deserve to be shamed.

Bored Panda reached out to the woman who started this thread, Candace D., and she kindly agreed to tell us more about what prompted her to ask others to share their worst doctor experiences. Read our short conversation with her below!

Candace D., who started this thread on X (Twitter), is a chronic illness advocate who shares her own health journey online. "As a chronically ill person, I've had a lot of bad experiences with medical professionals and I know a lot of other people have too, chronically ill or not," Candace told Bored Panda.

"So it's an interesting topic. I wasn't prepared for just how sad and deep the topic would be though. It was honestly really hard to read all those responses."

Still, Candace has had her fair share of negative experiences with the medical community. "Medical gaslighting and dismissive treatment delayed me being properly diagnosed with EDS, MCAS, POTS, etc., which also delayed treatment, and I know there are so many others like me," she shares.

"If I could change one thing about how the medical system treats chronically ill patients, I would just say—PLEASE BELIEVE US. An amazing start is just listening to us and having compassion for us. No one wants to be sick," the woman reiterates.

I used to be on a hospital committee that organised the annual services of remembrance for the babies miscarried or stillborn in the hospital. One year, every single reading was biblical verse, and the school choir (who sang every year for us) were told to sing only hymns. We had some complaints from parents that it was too faith based and it excluded parents who weren't Christian. I found a few lovely poems that I said could be read the next time, and we needed to be more cognisant of all the parents faiths (and those with no faith). The senior midwife on the panel said no, those babies wouldn't be going to heaven, so there was no point in their parents coming to the service. I complained, and was told that she had the right to express her religious beliefs. This was a midwife who would be the first person to deal with bereaved parents, and she believed that if it was a Muslim baby, or Jewish baby, she was insinuating their baby was going to hell.

That is worth a lawsuit and a complaint to everyone from the BBB to the AMA and beyond. That is as bad as removing the wrong thing!

After reading this list, you might think that everyone in the U.S. hates their doctor. But that isn't the truth. In fact, 70% of Americans are satisfied with their primary care doctor. But few feel that American healthcare is personalized: 53% say they believe that the system treats them more like a number than a person.

Many people also expect doctors to have a holistic approach. That's why 70% of American adults who come in for a checkup want their doctor to ask them about their mental health. This signals a shift from our understanding that a primary care doctor can only help with physical ailments.

I would have told those nurses right where to go. Like really? How TF do you know how loud I may have screamed in the baby making process? Were you there? Nope, so stfu. I do know that excessive yelling/screaming can use up a lot of energy/effort, that would be better to use during the delivery. These nurses are not making anything easier or better for their patients by talking to them in this manner. Hopefully they all will be retired soon.

Doctors make mistakes; they are human, after all. But the costs of their mistakes can often have catastrophic consequences. In the U.S., 250k people pass away each year because ER doctors misdiagnose them. Researchers estimate that a whopping 7.4 million people might get a wrong diagnosis at the emergency room.

But experts don't put the blame on the doctors. One of the study's authors explains that we have to take a look at the medical training, technology, and support that could help doctors avoid these mistakes.

Dr. Susan M. Peterson, another author of the study, explained that pointing out mistakes helps doctors improve. Like what happened with detecting heart attacks: public health campaigns, better diagnostic testing, and cardiologists and ER doctors working together resulted in more diagnoses.

Like with many of the examples you'll read on this list, many patients don't think their doctors listen to them. Their concerns get dismissed or entirely overlooked. A 2021 UK survey found that one in four patients felt like they weren't treated with respect by their physician. Another one in four claimed not being listened to.

My first dentist did the same when I was sixteen. Drilled out four molars, one in each quadrant. He said he couldn't numb all four areas, so he wasn't numbing any of them. I'd been conditioned to believe that dentists were SUPPOSED to hurt (early 1970s) so I endured it while tears poured out. After he finished drilling, he stepped back, saw the tears, and started laughing at me. I'm almost 70 and still terrified of dentists. By the way, he was a relative of mine.

I drive 2 hours to my dentist because he is NOT stingy with numbing me up, and will immediately stop if I make the tiniest noise of distress to numb me up more. They let me make payments if I need to, and always manage to squeeze me in for an emergency. If he dies, I'm learning Necromancy.

For women and people of color, misdiagnoses and medical gaslighting are even more frequent occurrences. Research shows that women and racial and ethnic minorities are 20%-30% more likely than a white man to receive an incorrect diagnosis. In a 2024 survey, 65.3% of women expressed concern about receiving unsatisfactory or poor-quality care.

Do you know how hard it is to file malpractice on a dentist? I had one pull several teeth because they said my insurance didn't cover root canals or crowns. I'm on social security. I called all the malpractice attorneys in my large city. None of them take dental cases. I was referred to the one person who does, a former dentist who's now an attorney and is 200 miles away. He's so booked up he can only take catastrophic cases, which mine was not considered.

dang, i know dentists LOVE pulling teeth (source: i need two root canals in molars and am having a hard time finding anyone who does them and takes my insurance, and my primary dentist has told me repeatedly that the easier option is to have them pulled, because any dentist can do that. i'm not quite 38 years old.) but that's no reason to do the wrong one!

Women experience neglect in the ER, too. One study showed how women who had severe stomach pain had to spend 33% more time in the waiting room than men did. And even if women do manage to get into the doctor's office, their heart disease often gets diagnosed as anxiety, ovarian cysts as regular period pain, and autoimmune diseases get interpreted as depression.

I have researched medical ratings here in Texas and Austin has the lowest rating in the state. A lot of it goes back to the history of medicine, where any major health complaint from a woman was chalked up to be hysteria. Even today, there's still a bias in the medical community where doctors may think that it's a hormonal imbalance or the woman is just making things up.

"Female hysteria was once a common medical diagnosis for women, applied whenever women displayed 'inappropriate' emotions such as anxiety, anger and even sexual desire," Stephanie Trentacoste McNally, MD, explained.

Wonder if, in a hypothetical scenario, that doctor would then be liable if the kid ended up self-harming in the way he described?

Until 1993, women and minorities weren't allowed to participate in clinical trials in the U.S. That resulted in the medical community not knowing whether the studied variables affected them the same way they affected white men. And we see the consequences of that today: we have a limited understanding of how women, especially women of color, experience disease and what treatments they need.

Not remotely the same thing but many many years ago I was at an emergency doc (not my regular), can’t remember what for, and I mentioned I had glandular fever (had been tested and confirmed previously) and he decided I didn’t have glandular fever and ordered another test. It also confirmed that yes indeed I had glandular fever.

And women do tend to have different experiences. With medications, for example, women are twice as likely to have adverse effects because the meds have only been tested on men. Women who receive hip implants are also 29% more likely to experience implant failure because of differences in anatomy and inadequate testing. Until 1999, we even didn't know that women present different symptoms of a heart attack than men.

Contrary to older perceived wisdom which associated them with stress, stomach ulcers are actually caused by a specific strain of bacteria. Took a researcher to test this out on himself, then cure the ulcer by taking antibiotics, for this idea to be taken seriously.

I had a rare eye condition when I was a kid and needed surgery on it. My mum agreed to having other doctors come and look. There were 10-20 doctors who came through the exam room, each taking a turn to use the lenses to look in my eye. It was not pleasant, though not as delicate as the OP's situation.

There seem to be a lot of complaints that doctors aren't competent enough in dealing with women's issues. And you want to take away a learning opportunity. Oh good!

Experts say there are certain steps we need to take to rectify the problem. For starters, having more women in leadership positions for medical and clinical research. Changes need to be made in medical education: students should learn how sex differences affect medical care. And, of course, more inclusive research that includes women of low socioeconomic status, older women, and those living in rural areas.

I had a friend given a rectal exam at her first on/gyn exam at 20 yrs old. She didn't have any symptoms to check there either. The most research I can find says some doctors prefer to and most don't. Although, all my ob/gyns narrate what's about to happen and none have even mentioned it.

I had my appendix nearly burst when I was 16. We lived out in SW Colorado at the time and even driving to the local hospital took 30 minutes. Anyway, I was minutes away from it bursting, surgery went fine, and I'm in the recovery room. Doctor comes in - neither my mom nor I recognize him - and proceeds to shove his fingers in my vâgina, then anûs. It was over in 30 - he was gone by the time either of us reacted. Mom ran out to find the doctor, but he'd disappeared. We tried to sue, but since it was our word against a doctor, we were dismissed. It's took me a couple of decades to recognize that I'd been ráped.

I have 4 trips to an ER in 3 years for ripping stomach pain. I had to wait 2 to 4 hours in the waiting room each time. The third time after a 4 hour wait, I finally saw a doctor. He asked me what d***s I took because I was having withdrawals. Told him I didn't use d***s; he called me a liar. Some blood was drawn and 15 minutes later another doctor came in and sent me for x-rays and an ultrasound. Found out I was suffering from inflammation of the chest cavity. Went through the same thing the 4th time. It took a massive change in my diet to fix the problem.

Yeah I've had this happen too. I went to the hospital after months of stomach and bowel issues, I literally had blood pouring from my bowels which prompted the hospital visit. The nurse yelled at me very aggressively to sit still because my constant movement due to pain, was affecting the test results (blood pressure and heart rate) the bowel specialist came in and looked me up and down and decided I was fat and therefore all my problems were down to an unhealthy diet and being fat. I was so bloated I literally looked 9 months pregnant but he refused to believe it was bloating and not just fat. He then left me in a waiting room for 10hrs with no pain relief. I was curled up on the floor crying in pain when he finally came to see me at which point he informed me that there was nothing wrong with me and I could go home. I dont drive and had no idea how I'd get home (i hadn't brought any cash.) I ended up collapsing outside the hospital and bring rushed to A&E where i actually got help.

I spoke to my psychiatrist before I started trying to get pregnant and she was easily able to look up which class the antidepressants were. Some you absolutely can't use (though you can taper off using them safely in the early stages) and some that are fine. Mine were both in the middle class, so there has been no direct connection between them and birth defects, but there hasn't been a huge amount of research on them either, so it was up to me whether to go off them or not.

I can't believe the number of bad things I've read here about horrible experiences with labour nurses and doctors. I'm from the UK where most women give birth using midwives and it's incredibly rare to ever hear anyone say anything negative about them. Midwives are amazing and incredibly supportive and non judgemental. People here often form incredibly close bonds with their midwives and it's not uncommon for them to remain friends after the birth.

They do need to find out where the internal bleeding is coming from. One of the tests for this does involve a digital (finger insertion) rectal exam for occult blood. Patients DO have the right to refuse this and there are other tests that we are able to do. Whether or not your insurance will cover/approve them if you refuse the physical exam is another story.

Exactly. You can't even get to the button to shoot the film from the actual location of the x-ray. Can one see a burst cyst on x-ray? When I had one, they did a CT scan and no x-ray. Disclaimer: Speaking from experiences for the past 20 years in Texas (God bless the women of Texas), USA.

This one is BS. I'm currently working towards my bachelor's in radiography and I can't see a doctor ordering an X-ray for a cyst. An abdominal or pelvic ultrasound would likely be ordered initially and possibly a CT scan/MRI. If she did have an X-ray she wouldn't have needed to stand for it, as it would be an abdominal view with the patient laying on the table. Typically only chest X-rays and some spinal X-rays, have the patient standing, if safe to do so. Crazy how an X-ray with someone else's foot in the middle of it, was able to diagnose this person with such a significant cyst burst, that left them so weak because of all the internal bleeding. Women already have a difficult time getting proper medical care, no need to make things worse for others by lying.

When I was a child, my dentist made two mistakes at once. He thought (a) he could take my loose tooth out with a single yank and (b) he didn't have to tell me about it in advance. I don't know when he died, but when he did I'm sure he still had my bite marks on this fingers.

When I was 11 my mom took me to the dentist, and she had to wait in the waiting room with my baby brother. That's the last thing *I* remember. My mom tells me about 15 minutes after I went back there, I came out screaming and crying, ran out into the parking lot and refused to go back in there. I didn't see the dentist again until I was 18, and up until the day I got them all yanked out, I needed nitrous for anything, even a cleaning. I'm 43 now, and I still don't remember what happened back there, but I'm still terrified of the dentist. When I take my son, they treat him in front of me. I picked a place that does that especially.

Therapist here. You never touch a client. There is a closeness already, because of the therapeutic relationship, and touching can easily turn into something more. No safe, and likely the beginning of grooming.

After childbirth if the vaginal opening tears, the Dr can add an extra stitch to make the vaginal entrance smaller and “tighter” for an improved sexual experience for the husband. It’s about changing a woman’s body unnecessarily for a man’s pleasure.

At least for me (I still go to peds), they always ask when your last period was, but I'm not sure what OPs complaint was so it could have been entirely unnecessary. But for me, this is entirely normal.

Planning on surgery to replace C3 next week before it does to much damage, right now it is bruising the cord. The first time it took a few years to figure out it was a nerve problem, but not through not testing or trying. This time since it was only year the MRI picked this one up quicker.

Do all jobs require a doctor's exam in the US? I can only think of a few jobs that might need it here, like my dad had to get his sight and hearing checked before his crossing guard job.

No. I'm 53 and I've never had an exam for a job. Some do, but it's mostly to check that you're physically able to do the job. My husband has to do a yearly exam to get certified to drive his company vehicles.

Well, if I had a rare condition, I'd much rather they bother to 'google it' than not. You can pick out which website you look at for information and there are a lot of reputable medical sites and research papers to be found (plus specific charities that are a wealth of advice) I'd worry if they just posted a query on Facebook.

The below is a quote from a study, one of many made in recent years. I believe his doctor is nuts, since his unhealthy recommendation's positive effects do not apply to Chrons disease. The Effects of Smoking on Crohn's Disease. Crohn's disease is one type of IBD. Ulcerative colitis is the other type. Smoking has very different effects on each of these diseases. In ulcerative colitis, cigarette smoking seems to offer some protection against symptom flare-ups (although that's not a reason to start smoking because it has so many other health risks). The opposite is true for Crohn's disease.

That just sounds like small talk, asking about relationships, kids, jobs and the weather are all pretty standard small talk subjects. May seem a little strange during an exam but I'm sure a lot of people appreciate a bit of small talk to distract them from what's happening and any anxiety they have.

I used to have an awesome doctor and once we were talking about people we knew from our church and she told me that this very nice older lady had passed. Right when she was peeking into my batch. Another time she said 'oh man you have BEAUTIFUL cervical coloring it's so HEALTHY!' and I told her I hear that all the time and laughed so hard she had to readjust the speculum. God I miss Dr. Rakowski.

Sounds odd to me too - no major arteries in the chest wall and how would it then rupture a year later? Does remind me of the pain of having a drain put in under local, though - they hadn't realised how much pressure had built up in the chest cavity so when they eventually got through the whole room, doctors and all, was sprayed with blood. (I had lots of other injuries, including a drain in the other side lung cavity, and other internal damage, so the collapsed left lung hadn't been noticed for a couple of days).
