But as Sigrid and Bring Me The Horizon sang, "It's just a bad day / Not a bad life." And one of the ways to recover is by venting online. McKee thinks it’s time to finally blow up the myth that feelings don’t matter at work.
"Science is on our side: there are clear neurological links between feelings, thoughts, and actions. When we are in the grip of strong negative emotions, it’s like having blinders on," she said. "We focus mostly — sometimes only — on the source of the pain. We don’t process information as well, think creatively, or make good decisions. Frustration, anger, and stress cause an important part of us to shut down —the thinking, engaged part. Disengagement is a natural neurological and psychological response to pervasive negative emotions."

"Some studies show that too much happiness can make you less creative and prone to engage in riskier behaviors (think about how we act like fools when we fall in love!). On the work front: I’ve seen groups of people worked up into a frenzy at sales conferences and corporate pep rallies. Little learning or innovation comes out of these meetings. Throw in a lot of alcohol and you’ve got a whole host of other problems."
So it sounds like having your suspenders stuck in your chair every once in a while can be actually quite beneficial.

Do you know if those are definitely still perfectly save to eat? Or do you think the needy should be fed low grade food? Are you aware that there are quite a couple of incidents where shops did give away leftover food that was fine and that got sued, after someone got sick? That's why many stopped.

These are clearly from a vending machine, and the prepared food probably isn't healthy anymore. "They" didn't waste the money, you didn't buy the food. They took a lump, and if they are any good at cost accounting, won't give you as much, leaving you hungry next week, when you forget your lunch.

Reminds me of most of the places I have worked. Such a litigious society that if you donate food that is "expired" you have to accept the liability for any sickness that could occur from ingesting bad food. So instead perfectly fine (even though "expired") food is thrown away instead of giving it to people in need.

Worked in a bakery many years ago that threw out bins worth of bread at the end of each day. I managed to convince the owners to put them in clean garbage bags and donate them to the soup kitchen down the street. Because food waste is stupid in a land with so much hunger.

It infuriates me!! I did fast food and the amount of food that was tossed at the end of the day was insane! I get that they're afraid of litigation,what if somebody gets sick,but there's got to be something that can be done to prevent so much waste.There are hungry people out there!!

Predicting fresh food stock is difficult. Stock too little, you lose sales. Too much, and ... Well , see pic. Once fresh food is beyond its sell-by date it's illegal to sell it. Or to give it away. So this stuff will happen now and then. The best plan is to heavily discount on sell by day, but you can't make people buy it. And many sellers don't want to risk giving homeless people food poisoning

My son is a dumpster diver. He finds completely GOOD meat at a local grocery store trash bin, still frozen. Brings it home. WE never do with out and don't spend a dime on food. Mind you that this is unopened meat. He only does this in the winter though.

I worked at a well know supermarket and couldn't understand why they didn't donate it to a homeless shelter or soup kitchen! At Xmas, big bosses wanted lots of produce to fill the entrance of the store... we would waste so many 5-10kg bags of potatoes & veg! They may go bad shortly after but make soup or mash and it could be easily be frozen or distributed but NOT wasted! Big bosses: make sure displays look nice full. Also big bosses: why do you have SOOO much wasted, you need to adjust your orders! I brought a bunch and gave to them to extended family

Our company has a policy of not giving away *free* food anymore (we had numerous issues with assaults and entitled 'customers' because they had to choose from the 'expired' food and sometimes didn't like the choices they had. Seriously though if you're begging for free food take what you're given don't whine about it not being your favorite flavor or the size you want) instead we ask that they do small chores to earn their free food (stuff that only takes a few minutes at most like tossing the recycling/garbage in the outside bin, sweep/mop floors keeping in mind this is not a big place, occasionally we'll get a milkcrate of candy that needs to be put out and it's really busy). Often for a few minutes work they'll leave with armfuls of stuff. It also means there's less thieves shoplifting as the homeless population is keeping some of the nastier elements of their community away as they dont want our store to be closed at nights and lose that food or a place to warm doing chores.

I used to work in a cafe and my ops manager warned my team and myself, if anyone, so much as eat a crumb of the food waste for the trash, they will be dismissed immediately. They didn't even have a charity and our staff was on the minimum wage working 12hours per day

Possibly the result of local law or company policy requiring all food not sold by end of day to be destroyed for fear of liability. But surely a phone call one hour before closing would have excited a local food bank. Employee should bring this up to management for intelligent resolution.

Iām 16 and I got my first job on my birthday basically. I work in a well know chain of restaurants as a waitress, and I canāt even begin to explain the amount of food thrown away every night. I have people I work with LIVING in hotels. We get paid $2.75 and hour and the rest is tips. Most of the food we throw away is perfectly fine and can be eaten either the next day or over the span of a couple days. Iāve said something to my managers about maybe donating it to the homeless, and food shelters, but they said itās āagainst policyā. It makes me so mad that a restaurant whoās slogan is āMade with Careā doesnāt ACTUALLY care.

Just add a disclaimer to the label that says, if consumed after the exp date, its at your own risk. I don't get how you can sue for food poisoning anyway, how do you prove where you got it from? In the UK we have a "best before date" instead of an expiry date. So we can sell things past the best before date and just discount it. Also to combat food waste we have the 'look, smell, taste - don't waste" campaign (which is basically what most people who know the value of money do anyway haha)

my favorite thing about working at starbucks is that at the end of every work day we donate the "expired" food. its not expired we just aren't allowed to sell it after a certain period. so we donate it. :)

I am a dumpster diver. I often find rotisserie chickens, hamburger and other meats that I bring home to my cats. They love poultry. I also scavenge flowers and bouquets which I bring to my mother, who culls the wilted ones and rearranges the rest in vases.

Welcome to USA (probably) and litigious people. Much more wasted to prevent lawsuits by the one person that claims they got a bad sandwich. I volunteered for years with a food charity. We have stores that give us stuff like this as 'animal food' and then we decide what to do with it at no risk to the store. You would jaw drop / feel sad to see how much food gets thrown away in the US.

In the US, the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act was signed into law in 1996 to encourage food donation to nonprofit organizations for distribution to needy individuals by minimizing liability. Basically, no lawsuits can be filed against grocers and restaurants who donate food. I work at a Food Rescue nonprofit which logged 2M weighed pounds of rescued food in 2022.

We had a lot of foreign contractors work at my company at one time, we had a "last name first initial' email naming policy, I was always sure to ask them first if the naming was ok and not inappropriate for their language, and was always sure to check new names. We could also set up aliases if they wanted a 'personalized' favorite email name.

We had a cork board at work where employees could leave ācomplimentsā/happy note cards about their fellow co-workers. Terrible idea for morale. There are employees who choose not to socialize, or cannot due to anxiety, shyness, or introverted nature, and it hurts them as other employees may see them as unfriendly when they arenāt. The people who donāt socialize/act friendly will never get compliment cards (or Valentines etc) and that sucks. IMO a stupid and unfair system as not everyone is the same levels of energy, friendliness, socialization, etc.

Has anybody noticed that the majority of people being drug tested tend to be factory workers? None of the upper class people are subject to this. Congress, who passed this legislation, is exempt, also people like judges, CEOs, etc. I got in trouble with my company after being sent for a drug test after injuring my finger. When I got back, I told HR "I'll put my p**s up against management's any day." I got away with that because I was in a good union.

The person who was a cart returner at Wal-Mart. Was complaining that people were not returning their carts? I... Well.... If?.... umm...? Forget it. If I explain it to them, I would be doing the job of learning for them. If this is not enough information for sometime in that type of situation; life is going to continue to be a abundance of differing disappointing situations. Puppies can bring happiness.
