Having a terrible day at work can be frustrating, overwhelming, and even demoralizing. Whether it's a challenging project, an annoying colleague, or just a series of misfortunes, sadly, there are plenty of reasons you might feel like you're a failure.
But as Sigrid and Bring Me The Horizon sang, "It's just a bad day / Not a bad life." And one of the ways to recover is by venting online. So we at Bored Panda decided to remind ourselves that the universe hasn't conspired against any of us. From time to time, everyone runs into some (undeserved) adversity.

I've lost my faith in humanity. What we do defines us and this is what we do. We are not stewards of the land or caretakers. We are a blight. We are just vultures picking at the carcass of a dying world.
I Work As A Valet And Make $3.85/Hour And I Received This As A Tip
Getting dealt a bad hand at work isn't the end of the world. Especially for content employees. According to Annie McKee, Ph.D., who is a best-selling business book author and advisor to top global leaders, from CEOs of Fortune 500 companies to government officials, those who are engaged with their jobs and colleagues work harder — and smarter. But that's quite rare.
"Far too many couldn’t care less about what’s happening around them," McKee wrote in Harvard Business Review. "For them, Wednesday is 'hump day' and they’re just working to get to Friday. And then there’s the other end of the bell curve — that nearly one out of five employees is actively disengaged. These people are sabotaging projects, backstabbing colleagues, and generally wreaking havoc in their workplaces."

"Disengaged, unhappy people aren’t any fun to work with, don’t add much value, and impact our organizations (and our economy) in profoundly negative ways," McKee explained.
"It’s even worse when leaders are disengaged because they infect others with their attitude. Their emotions and mindset impact others’ moods and performance tremendously. After all, how we feel is linked to what and how we think. In other words, thought influences emotion, and emotion influences thinking."

McKee thinks it’s time to finally blow up the myth that feelings don’t matter at work.
"Science is on our side: there are clear neurological links between feelings, thoughts, and actions. When we are in the grip of strong negative emotions, it’s like having blinders on," she said. "We focus mostly — sometimes only — on the source of the pain. We don’t process information as well, think creatively, or make good decisions. Frustration, anger, and stress cause an important part of us to shut down —the thinking, engaged part. Disengagement is a natural neurological and psychological response to pervasive negative emotions."

However, it’s not just negative emotions we need to watch out for. "Extremely strong positive emotions have the same effect," McKee said.
"Some studies show that too much happiness can make you less creative and prone to engage in riskier behaviors (think about how we act like fools when we fall in love!). On the work front: I’ve seen groups of people worked up into a frenzy at sales conferences and corporate pep rallies. Little learning or innovation comes out of these meetings. Throw in a lot of alcohol and you’ve got a whole host of other problems."
So it sounds like having your suspenders stuck in your chair every once in a while can be actually quite beneficial.
They Can't Pay A Living Wage But I'll Waste Hundreds On Food Waste
These are probably beyond date. Can't legally sell them, can't legally give them away.
Load More Replies...It's illegal to do this in France and some other European countries. Any leftovers must be distributed to charities or needy people.
But only for some years now. Before that, it was even illegal do take the food out of the garbage bins, because legally that was "stealing". In Germany taking food from garbarge bins is called "containern" and many got sued for doing it. Too weird...
Load More Replies...I worked at a famous UK chemists. Every even they toss away dozens of sandwiches. Why? Because before the gave it to a charity that gave them to the homeless. Until some homeless sued them over food poisoning
cant that be distributed or given to the needy, that's so disgusting throwing away food.
Do you know if those are definitely still perfectly save to eat? Or do you think the needy should be fed low grade food? Are you aware that there are quite a couple of incidents where shops did give away leftover food that was fine and that got sued, after someone got sick? That's why many stopped.
Load More Replies...These are clearly from a vending machine, and the prepared food probably isn't healthy anymore. "They" didn't waste the money, you didn't buy the food. They took a lump, and if they are any good at cost accounting, won't give you as much, leaving you hungry next week, when you forget your lunch.
How many people could that have fed? And this is only one store on one day.
When I was in high school I used to fill a 50gal trash can with overproofed pizza dough every night. Just because Pizza Hut was never allowed to run out of pizza.
Reminds me of most of the places I have worked. Such a litigious society that if you donate food that is "expired" you have to accept the liability for any sickness that could occur from ingesting bad food. So instead perfectly fine (even though "expired") food is thrown away instead of giving it to people in need.
Worked in a bakery many years ago that threw out bins worth of bread at the end of each day. I managed to convince the owners to put them in clean garbage bags and donate them to the soup kitchen down the street. Because food waste is stupid in a land with so much hunger.
It infuriates me!! I did fast food and the amount of food that was tossed at the end of the day was insane! I get that they're afraid of litigation, what if somebody gets sick, but there's got to be something that can be done to prevent so much waste. There are hungry people out there!!
Unfortunately, it has expired, and if sold, and someone got sick it would cost more then wasting all that food- I work produce at a grocery store
Predicting fresh food stock is difficult. Stock too little, you lose sales. Too much, and ... Well , see pic. Once fresh food is beyond its sell-by date it's illegal to sell it. Or to give it away. So this stuff will happen now and then. The best plan is to heavily discount on sell by day, but you can't make people buy it. And many sellers don't want to risk giving homeless people food poisoning
My son is a dumpster diver. He finds completely GOOD meat at a local grocery store trash bin, still frozen. Brings it home. WE never do with out and don't spend a dime on food. Mind you that this is unopened meat. He only does this in the winter though.
I'm not sure, but it might be that waste of short-lived products can be written off in some fiscal way, but giving still edible food to your poor hungry workers can not.
so sad to see this wasted and so many are homeless.....all about money and greed
I worked at a well know supermarket and couldn't understand why they didn't donate it to a homeless shelter or soup kitchen! At Xmas, big bosses wanted lots of produce to fill the entrance of the store... we would waste so many 5-10kg bags of potatoes & veg! They may go bad shortly after but make soup or mash and it could be easily be frozen or distributed but NOT wasted! Big bosses: make sure displays look nice full. Also big bosses: why do you have SOOO much wasted, you need to adjust your orders! I brought a bunch and gave to them to extended family
Eat an expired gas station sandwich some time. See how that goes for you. Nothing like a 2 day old, room temperature, egg salad sandwich to really open up the sluice gates.
Our company has a policy of not giving away *free* food anymore (we had numerous issues with assaults and entitled 'customers' because they had to choose from the 'expired' food and sometimes didn't like the choices they had. Seriously though if you're begging for free food take what you're given don't whine about it not being your favorite flavor or the size you want) instead we ask that they do small chores to earn their free food (stuff that only takes a few minutes at most like tossing the recycling/garbage in the outside bin, sweep/mop floors keeping in mind this is not a big place, occasionally we'll get a milkcrate of candy that needs to be put out and it's really busy). Often for a few minutes work they'll leave with armfuls of stuff. It also means there's less thieves shoplifting as the homeless population is keeping some of the nastier elements of their community away as they dont want our store to be closed at nights and lose that food or a place to warm doing chores.
I used to work in a cafe and my ops manager warned my team and myself, if anyone, so much as eat a crumb of the food waste for the trash, they will be dismissed immediately. They didn't even have a charity and our staff was on the minimum wage working 12hours per day
Possibly the result of local law or company policy requiring all food not sold by end of day to be destroyed for fear of liability. But surely a phone call one hour before closing would have excited a local food bank. Employee should bring this up to management for intelligent resolution.
This, too, is criminal. But it may be the result of laws requiring that food not sold by end of day be destroyed. Still, surely a call one hour before closing would have alerted a local food bank.
and I'll bet they lock the dumpster so no one who really needs an is hungry can get them
I’m 16 and I got my first job on my birthday basically. I work in a well know chain of restaurants as a waitress, and I can’t even begin to explain the amount of food thrown away every night. I have people I work with LIVING in hotels. We get paid $2.75 and hour and the rest is tips. Most of the food we throw away is perfectly fine and can be eaten either the next day or over the span of a couple days. I’ve said something to my managers about maybe donating it to the homeless, and food shelters, but they said it’s “against policy”. It makes me so mad that a restaurant who’s slogan is “Made with Care” doesn’t ACTUALLY care.
this is awful. this should be rounded up at the end of the day & sent to shelters around the city, handed out to homeless & put up at churches or food banks or even donated to kid schools for the next day.
These could been given to local homeless, either in a shelter or on the streets
Just add a disclaimer to the label that says, if consumed after the exp date, its at your own risk. I don't get how you can sue for food poisoning anyway, how do you prove where you got it from? In the UK we have a "best before date" instead of an expiry date. So we can sell things past the best before date and just discount it. Also to combat food waste we have the 'look, smell, taste - don't waste" campaign (which is basically what most people who know the value of money do anyway haha)
Why are folks so wasteful? Books! Food! What is next? People? Sadly that does happen in parts of our world. Norma Jean Morrissey❤️🩹💔
The way these things are packaged they'll last forever. Give them to a food bank or homeless shelter.
They can’t sell it nor can they donate it if the label says it’s expired.
Shame that this food can't be used to feed the poor, which includes staff.
It looks so yummy tho D: it's not even unboxed! still edible :(
take them all out, and put them in a vending machine. THEY WILL NOT NOTICE THE DIFFERENCE!!!!!!
You're looking at the absolute stupidest government rules. They don't allow food to be distributed to charities or churches if the date of expiration for sale is passed. Even though Totally safe to eat.
my favorite thing about working at starbucks is that at the end of every work day we donate the "expired" food. its not expired we just aren't allowed to sell it after a certain period. so we donate it. :)
I HATE it when stores/restaurants do this! Give it to schools, the homeless shelters, etc.! DON'T THROW PERFECTLY GOOD FOOD AWAY!!!!!!
Which country is this. In UK, a large number of food shops/supermarkets have arrangements to give their unsold fresh sandwiches, fresh foods and other edibles to their local food banks - are we the only country that does this?
How soulless do you have to be to think this is okay in a world full of hungry humans?
OH MY GOSH. YOU CAN PROBABLY STILL EAT THOSE SANDWICHES, THEY'RE STILL IN A PLASTIC CONTAINER!
Take it to a Mission or a gathering of homeless even pigeons in the park could have a feed.
When you see something like this, you should assume there is either a company policy or legal practice that requires you are not allowed to sell, donate or distribute this.
In NY, unused food cannot be given away. So hospitals, restaurants, etc. must throw it away because of lawsuit risks.
Donate to the homeless. Just put the bag outside or by the dumpster, with a post-it, free sandwiches.
So why not give it to the homeless or a food pantry?? Such terrible waste when so many go hungry.
If not out over Best Before Date, give to home less. Sure they would appreciate it if still edible.
They could be donated to an agency serving people who can't afford to buy sufficient food. Even at their end date, the food is still safe and edible.
Required by the health department. All dated food must be trashed, cannot be donated or given away.
This is a sin. All the hungry people out there and they justify throwing out food.
There are homeless who would welcome any food that might be a day old but still edible more than a lined pristine bin at the end of each day. Give food away don't bin. it is not hard to do....
What’s worse is the companies get to call those items as a loss on their taxes and get recouped money…
It is possible to feed everyone, but corporate greed and inconvenience makes it impossible.
Nursing homes, food banks and other nonprofit organizations would love to have this food.
Yes, that is everyday at the store I work.....so much waste when so many people are starving.
I knew a guy who was a manager at McDonalds back in the day and got fired for taking the leftover food at end of shift to a shelter instead of throwing it out .
every state could probably feed every homeless person if places like this weren't throwing away so much food
Good chance all of that food is past it's expiration date. You want food poisoning? Dive right in!
I am a dumpster diver. I often find rotisserie chickens, hamburger and other meats that I bring home to my cats. They love poultry. I also scavenge flowers and bouquets which I bring to my mother, who culls the wilted ones and rearranges the rest in vases.
I used to work at a grocery store in the kitchen. They would search our bags when we left. They would rather throw away hundreds of dollars of made that day fresh food than to let us have any we didn't pay for.
If the store isn't going to make money anyway, why can't they just donate them to a shelter or give them to the homeless on the street? Oh right, in some cities it's illegal to feed the homeless for some stupid reason.
This is the result of a lawsuit based society. It’s too risky to give it away free since the lawsuit that results will be millions of dollars. 🤷♂️
Welcome to USA (probably) and litigious people. Much more wasted to prevent lawsuits by the one person that claims they got a bad sandwich. I volunteered for years with a food charity. We have stores that give us stuff like this as 'animal food' and then we decide what to do with it at no risk to the store. You would jaw drop / feel sad to see how much food gets thrown away in the US.
In the US, the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act was signed into law in 1996 to encourage food donation to nonprofit organizations for distribution to needy individuals by minimizing liability. Basically, no lawsuits can be filed against grocers and restaurants who donate food. I work at a Food Rescue nonprofit which logged 2M weighed pounds of rescued food in 2022.
Load More Replies...worked at a Wegmans - we were told to prepare food specifically to be thrown away. it was important to project the image of a bountiful inventory.
Someone in my 8-plex village works at one of the grocery stores in town. Once a week they throw an incredible amount of food in the dumpster all of it with "Reduced of quick sale" stickers on it. I save a lot of stuff from the dumpster but I can't bring myself to rescue the food.

Since nobody can prepare for the unexpected (just the way they can react to it), it isn't surprising that workers worry about other things.
"One could argue that today's employees are as equally stressed as their predecessors, but for different reasons," said Jodi Chavez, president of Atlanta-based Randstad Professionals, a segment of Randstad US, which provides finance, accounting, HR, sales, marketing, legal staffing and recruitment services. "They fear having their jobs outsourced to another country, have anxiety about how best to work alongside new technologies such as automation and robotics, have increased financial pressures with rising student loan debt and late retirement, and feel pressure to be 'on' and answering e-mails 24/7."

In difficult times, you need to find an internal reserve of energy and hope to help you make your way through. In other words, you need to tap into your resilience.
"Like so many other human traits, resilience can be woven into the fabric of one’s being (nature) and/or it can be learned (nurture)," career and business coach Marjie Terry said.
"One’s natural disposition may lead them to always look on the bright side or to look for the silver lining. For others, with an accumulation of life experience, they develop a resilience perspective and realize that, as the old saying goes, what doesn’t break you makes you stronger. They develop an ability to recognize that it’s important to keep going even when life hands you challenge after challenge—they develop perspective."
Sometimes, there really isn't much else we can do but endure. And laugh!
