We sometimes forget just how smart, creative, brave, and witty we used to be when we were kids. So it comes as a surprise for some parents when their children do or say something absolutely brilliant. Like getting their parents out of speeding tickets or using the scientific method to figure out that the Tooth Fairy isn’t real (I’m pretty sure that she’s actually real, but it’s still impressive that someone would go to such great lengths to try and disprove her existence).

There’s a subreddit out there that documents the moments that kids went above and beyond and really flexed their brainpower. Now, we can’t actually mention the full name of the subreddit (thank you, Internet and Social Media Police), so let’s use a slightly abbreviated version, shall we? ‘Kids Are Smart’ is an online community of 51.6k members and has been active since late June of 2018.

They’re all about showing off the times that kids “demonstrate impressively intelligent behavior” and we’ve collected some of their very best posts. You’re bound to enjoy this, especially if you have any kids or young siblings yourselves, Pandas. Remember to upvote your fave post and, if you feel like sharing, drop on by the comment section with your own ‘smart kid’ stories.

I reached out to the moderator team managing the subreddit and they were kind enough to answer my questions. The founder of the community told me that the entire idea to start the subreddit came about from a post about “a simple kid, exhibiting clever behavior for their age” that was originally posted on the ‘Kids Are Stupid’ (again, a slightly paraphrased title) online group. “It doesn't really belong there and I figured we needed a new sub that fit it better,” they told Bored Panda.

I also got in touch with single mom, comedy writer, and pop star in waiting Ariane Sherine from the UK, who plans to release her debut pop album, BITTER, later in 2022. She features her daughter in a lot of her witty and relatable social media posts and they’re very popular.

“My daughter loves starring in my social media posts. She actually asks me to tweet about her! When she does something cool or impressive like skateboarding or graffiti writing, she asks, ‘Can you put it on Twitter?!’ Then she loves to read the comments. I guess some kids are more shy and retiring, but I like the fact that mine is confident and happy to show the world her talents,” she said. Scroll down for Bored Panda’s full interviews with the founder of ‘Kids Are Smart’ and with Ariane.

I don't get this. I mean, yes hiting dogs is bad and all, but this is just asking the child to describe what is happening in the picture not determine what is good or bad. Just my two cents.

I am not sure if I understand you correctly and you did not understand the text or if I am missing something. The school was ok with them wearing skirts. What they were not allowed to wear, were shorts (for whatever reason). Coming next year, they may wear shorts as well.

The founder of ‘Kids Are Smart’ shared their thoughts about how to balance strict and fun parenting styles. “I love my video games and loved them as a kid. With that said, a young child won't know what that or TV is if you don't introduce it to them early,” they told Bored Panda.

“I don't think parents need to put so much thought into creating an environment for their children to learn but rather just remove distractions (like screens). Young children will explore whatever pulls their attention. Instead of using your phone or watching TV around your child, try puzzles, build with blocks or read books around your child, even if they aren't aimed at kids. This makes that child want to copy the parent and focus their attention on those activities, rather than Baby Shark 100 times a day,” the mod pointed out that parents have the ability to encourage their children to develop their imaginations.

When I was in a Public College there was an affiliated Public HS next door where they allowed select students to take some courses next door with us. Usually seniors. But when I was in Bio 2 we had a 13 year old ninth grader, who not only got perfect on all his exams but ran a study group. All these older college students attending a study group of a 13 year old because he knew his stuff and everyone wanted better grades. Wonder what happened to him, he was brilliant.

And what's a normal life? There's no one standard normal life everyone is living. He's fortunate that he won't go through a lot of struggles most people go through. That is a good thing, not to be lamented. He'll obviously have his own struggles but everyone does. Trust me having a 'normal' life is not something a child prodigy is desperate to experience. Their own life is normal to them because that's all they know personally. Unless he isn't being pressured at home or by the education system, he'll be fine.

In the 80s, I was taking the SAT on a miserable rainy day. A surfer dude and I were commiserate going when a kid and his dad got into line. Surfer dude asked the dad, "hey man, are you taking the exam?" The dad, "no my son is." Dude, "he looks kinda young." "He's 11, he does this for fun." Dude looks at me and says, "I'd be watching Saturday morning cartoon is I wasn't here." He and I just hung our heads.

I wasn’t allowed to have soda until I was 13 and I was perfectly fine. Parents have to make sure that their kids are making healthy choices otherwise I would have ended up eating candy and ice cream all of the time. That said an occasional popsicle is perfectly fine.

“It's easier than ever to be distracted by useless information. Parents need to remove distractions from babies at an early age so they can explore things that help them develop their knowledge. Don't let YouTube Kids or mobile games raise your child,” they added.

Meanwhile, comedy writer and future pop star Ariane pondered how much kids take after their parents when it comes to creativity, sense of humor, and wit.

“Both I and my daughter’s dad work in the media, and from an early age, she’s wanted to be a pop star, writer, and actor. I don’t know how much of her creativity was influenced by seeing her dad’s writing in the newspaper and seeing me go out late to perform at musical comedy gigs. She definitely has creative talents, but how much of that is nature or nurture I don’t know. As for sense of humor, she’s far more sassy and sarcastic than me, so I think her sharp wit is all her own!” she said.

Ariane revealed to Bored Panda that she herself had “very strict parents,” and as a result, she has become extremely liberal.

“I think being liberal encourages creativity as it gives kids the confidence to express themselves fully, and my daughter is usually very sweet-natured and well-behaved. She’s also a lot of fun, while I didn’t dare to be fun in such a strict environment when I was a kid, so I’m really pleased that I’m giving her a happier and freer upbringing.”

Sorry to introduce reality here, but ... If the light saber energy can cut through things and we can't see through it then it's perfectly reasonable to believe it can also block the light that causes the shadow. That leaves the question of whether or not it creates enough visible light to illuminate the shadow that's not illuminated by the other light source(s). That said, I'd be curious to know if the shadow is something that was considered during production.

Because lightsabers are partially ionised plasma that emit photons at a discrete resonant frequency corresponding to a particular atomic/ionic transition in the plasma that is much denser than surrounding/natural light. Duh.

Where I live (Victoria, Australia) we teach Victorian modern cursive font. This is where you put the kicks (joins) on the letters when you learn them un-joined so that when you start learning cursive it is an easy transition to joining them together.

The ‘Kids Are Smart’ subreddit’s moderators stress the fact that “cute doesn’t equal smart!” In other words, redditors should avoid posts where children are just being children, without any moments of actual brilliance.

“Kids are cute, but that's not what this subreddit is for. Don't make posts showing kids doing regular stuff or having a hobby if it doesn't show a real sign of intelligence. A kid with a vlog channel, drawing with crayons, arguing a silly point, or whatever else it might be is not necessarily a sign of exceptional intelligence. The post will be removed if a kid being smart is not the focus,” the mods warn.

However, the online community is not just about celebrating book smarts. Posts about “immense creative talent’ are also allowed. “Although this is a sub to see kids being smart, certain creative talents require intelligence, even if the focus of the performance, artwork, etc doesn't show intelligence in the traditional 2+2=4 sense,” the subreddit’s moderators explain.

“A kid understanding proper perspective and color use in a painting requires intelligence. A kid having mastered the art of acting requires a certain social intelligence.”

One of the rules that genuinely made me laugh with how it was phrased is the “Do NOT spam your child” regulation. The mods state: “1 post per child per month, maximum. This isn't Facebook. Your kid might be Einstein, but that doesn't mean you get to fill this sub with posts of your child. Post once, that's it. If your post gets removed, it was likely deemed not suitable for the sub. In this case, you may post again immediately if you have another example of 200 IQ.”

Animation studios do this quite often for budgetary reasons. In fact, there is a Spider-Man cartoon in the 80s (I believe) that used a different cartoon and replaced the main character in that episode with Spider-Man and the rest of the cartoon remained unchanged.

I dunno, when my eldest learnt about planets at school he couldn't get enough of using the word Uranus wherever possible. Kids love that word (and lots of adults too. I'll admit I still use it inappropriately...)

The items are in the basket, they are now hanging within a container. If you put a can of soup on a shelve, the soup is on the shelve. It you put a basket full of clothes on hangers, the clothes bare hanging.

It sure is hacking, though. Hacking means gaining illegal access to a system; the means are irrelevant. If you call someone, claiming you're from the it department, and there's an issue with their user profile and you need their password to check, and they give it to you, then yes, that's hacking - on a sidenote, that's actually what the majority of hacks look like, just doesn't look good on cinema screens.

The only way my kids would get 3x more candy is if they went to 3x more houses! We give all kids - costume or no costume, small kids or teens the same amount except for pre--schoolers, we give them age appropriate treats. And that is a pretty expensive looking costume - not your dollar store run of the mill one - and you couldn't afford a fake beard!?!?!?!?!

My dog does this! I tell him "out" which means he can't be in the room (Mostly kitchen while I'm cooking/baking). He goes to the edge of the floor and sits just behind the line, then lays down over the line so most of his body is in the room, lol.

Either wasn’t hungry or didn’t like what was on the plate, and it wasn’t worth the struggle. Don’t force your kids to eat more than their fill, or food they’ve tried and simply don’t like. I remember my father intervening when my mother tried to force me to eat beets, which I hate. He told her to quit obsessing about it, and just give up and let me have my likes and dislikes, especially since I had already tried to eat them several times before and just couldn’t.

I didn't know pencil machines were a thing. In Australia we just ask the teacher to lend us a pencil which we return at the end of class, or in the first couple of grades the class has communal pencils on each table rather than taking one to and from school and losing them.

When reflecting on how children display intelligence and courage, we can't help but think about how some individuals stand up for their beliefs, even in challenging situations. For instance, similar to how a viral incident showcased a student's determination to highlight historical inaccuracies taught by an authority figure, there are countless stories where young individuals exhibit remarkable tenacity.

Such instances remind us of the vital importance of courage and integrity, values that are vividly illustrated in stories of standing up for truth.

I had a “boyfriend” in first grade. At that age, it’s innocent; they’re really just best friends who spend a lot of time together. Don’t quash a child’s first experiences with deeply caring for someone who isn’t a close relative, just because you have an adult’s overactive imagination. Besides, this particular behavior looks like something he picked up from the adults around him, so it’s the adults who need to learn how to behave better.

My mother once bitched at me for coming to the table in "an undershirt". It was a Patagonia lightweight thermal undershirt. Dark blue with long sleeves, and looked just like plenty of shirts that aren't undershirts, but she knew it was "an undershirt". I went upstairs and changed into a dark blue Patagonia medium weight thermal undershirt that looked exactly the same except that it had the Patagonia label on the chest. That was totally acceptable because she didn't already know it was an undershirt.

Either that or they found a way to deal with puberty that works for them. Because what I'm reading is a 16 year old Going Out Of Their Sleeping Ways to still turn on the dryer. Major Ugh. And a parent that knows how to answer that with an even more dramatic reaction and them settling on coffee. Keyword being them. Making a cup of coffee at some point seems a reasonable exchange. That's better than many police negotiater ever will see in their lifetime. I hope my kids will be frank and funny too at that age.

Didn’t we all, when we were still small enough to fit? I mean, back in the day we didn’t have iPhones, but we’d still take a small radio and/or a flashlight and book. Kids love small, private spaces where they’re out of the constant and sometimes overbearing gaze of grownups. Hell, I cleared out the bottom of my closet when I was 7 (I’m 61, so 54 years ago now), and set up a tiny studio apartment in it—-even had a stash of food in a Tupperware—-so I’d be more comfortable hiding there.

Can’t say I blame them. From the looks of it, the pizza was in the oven a while (very brown crust and dark toppings and tomato sauce), so it’s probably red hot. Especially the tomato sauce, which can be like trying to eat molten lava when it’s that hot. Who TF gives their kid food that’s so hot it’ll burn their taste buds off?
