This century was, hands down, a total circus of celeb scandals: Chris Brown's assault on Rihanna, Harvey Weinstein's sexual misconduct, Ariana Grande and her doughnut-licking incident, Taylor Swift and Kanye West's feud, Ellen Degeneres' maltreatment of employees, and about a gazillion more.
However, the media is also known for blowing things out of proportion, so today, we're going to focus solely on overhyped controversies that surrounded our beloved (or not) stars!

Britney Spears when she had her meltdowns. The woman was bullied and harassed at such an insane level, it would make anyone snap.
"Reddit, what outrage over a celebrity was way overblown?" – a netizen who goes by u/vantae-bts recently took to one of the platform's most informative and thought-provoking communities, inviting its members to share famous celeb dramas that really weren't that big of a deal. The thread garnered nearly 11K upvotes as well as 12.1K comments containing some pretty interesting answers.
Now, it's your lucky day because Bored Panda has managed to get through to the author and pose them a couple of questions!
The OP is a college student in the US who was inspired to post the question online after having a conversation with their mom about the outrage. BP then asked the web user to shoot back and answer their own question, to which they replied: “I'm thinking the Britney Spears and Madonna kiss.”

Not that it makes it ok, but her story is really inspiring. She managed to learn a lot about herself and came out the other end an amazing person. Fun to follow on Twitter. Very funny.
For those of you who don’t know or perhaps had not yet been born when the "scandal" occurred, u/vantae-bts is talking about the famous on-stage kiss Madonna shared with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera during the performance of one of her biggest hits, "Like a Virgin," at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards.
Due to the rather conservative views in the early noughties and the fact that public display of affection, let alone a same-sex one, was fairly uncommon on TV, the smooch sparked quite a stir and gripped the headlines for weeks!

And then a female beach volleyball team got heavily fined because they decided to wear shorts instead of skimpy bikini.
Any female celeb who was shamed for existing. Anne Hathaway when paparazzi took and published an up-skirt photo when she was exiting a car. Miley Cyrus for legally smoking salvia with her friends in her home, or when a world famous photographer took a photo that the media deemed whore-ish, despite it not being her idea and she was a kid AND was covered. Brittani Spears for being a human and not perfect, etc. the media is hard af on women for just being human.

George Michael being asked by an undercover cop if he wants to see his thing, he said sure. So everyone found out he was gay and that was a huge no no. Gay meant pervert back then. Really sad and he never recovered mentally. Pisses me off. Just wasn't fair.
This comment seems like someone who wasn’t around or is too young to have related rewriting history. Gay meant gay back then. I know, I was very out & gay back then. Gay may have meant pervert in some places or with some people back then, as it still does today. There wasn’t some paradigm shift where everyone thought he was a pervert (most people I know thought it was sad that was the only way he could have physical connection) & now everyone feels horrible for how he was treated. To be clear, he was cruising for secs with other men in the restroom. Cottaging. Cruising. He was arrested for that. It wasn’t a random sting, but a common over-policing of an innocuous crime, albeit still a crime.) Guys are still getting arrested every day for this all over the world, because it’s typically not legal to have secs in public restrooms. The issue was how he couldn’t live his authentic self as “Yog” and still maintain his success as “George” if he were outed.

I remember people crying about how she “stole” from other athletes who would have otherwise taken her spot. “There’s a young woman who could have gone to the Olympics if *she* didn’t want to do her job!”
I also vaguely remember when people screamed about her taking adderall. Which she was prescribed, and wasn’t taking it as a PED.
Also, keeping up with the US women’s gymnastics - when people got up in arms ahout Gabby Douglas not putting her hand over her heart for the national anthem. Bro, she represented your country, she clearly isn’t anti-American

As a Brit I can honestly say her race was never an issue for most of us, and being a multicultural country most British people were thrilled at her marrying into the Royal Family. The reason she has become disliked is because of her constant griping and 'poor me' act. She has made a lot of money from the very institution she claims to despise. To be fair, it's not just her as Harry has received a lot of hate as well. They want to have their cake and eat it. They don't want to be working royals, but won't stop using their royal titles and demanded titles for their children as their 'birthright.' Archie and Lilibet were not entitled to the title of prince or princess before the Queen died due to not being directly in line to the throne, but they implied that it was purely because the children are mixed race. How can you claim you want nothing to do with an institution but at the same time keep using the name to cash in? A lot of the claims they've made have already been proven to be false and they've backtracked already on the claim that they said the royal family are racist. Their wedding cost the UK about £30 million and people lined the streets and had parties to celebrate their wedding. It's a shame because she was given a platform to make positive change for BAME people but she didn't take it and seems more intent on just being rich and famous and pushing her own agenda. She wasn't exactly a global superstar prior to marrying Harry and apart from fans of Suits noone had heard of her. The US is welcome to the both of them.

People don't hate her because she's 'mixed' ... there are lots of other reasons
I don't really have an opinion on her or Harry but I absolutely hate the way they've been treated by the media and people in general. There's at least one newspaper that has had several stories a day about them for years, there were the disgusting things that Jeremy Clarkson said and still, it doesn't stop. They've literally been treated worse than criminals by the media and no matter what anyone thinks of them, surely they don't deserve that.

As a Brit I can honestly say that everyone I spoke to was over the moon when Harry got engaged to her, her race wasn't an issue.
The bigger issue is that she’s a grifter who married a spoiled toddler.
Not a lot of people cared about her race, with most people not even realising and thinking she was a bit Essex tanned. People got mad because of how she acted. I'm happy that more people are now noticing the cracks and the media have finally had enough of her.
I'll be for real, I had no idea she was mixed until she started with the racism stuff. And I believed the racism stuff could have been true (I like to see stories from all sides so didn't jump to conclusions but understood that it very well could have been true just because rich white folks absolutely do hide racism often.) After that she just started sounding more and more like my abusive narcissist ex and that's when I started disliking her. When they got married I just thought "oh cool, a beautiful American marrying a prince!" I just hate to see the people who rage hate her so badly that they'll troll the dumbest things. Like I literally saw someone making fun of her outfit being wrinkled after she got out of a car. Seriously???

There is no controversy to most humans - it's mostly hype from the papers, with a side order of bigotry from a very few, who would never be satisfied whatever anyone did.
To be fair Harry and William were asked and said yes to walking behind the coffin. Prince Philip promised they wouldn't walk alone, and they didn't. One UK newspaper does focus on them WAY too much, but the headlines used in the Oprah interview were mocked up and not accurate representations of what had been said. Some of the headlines had also been US ones, not UK. At least they have been able to make plenty of decisions about their own lives since - though I'm not sure all of them were for the best. Be interesting to see if the current rumours of Harry wanting to come home are true! William and Kate's children are not exposed to the media as per the agreements that exist with the press about royal children. They are left alone except when their parents deem it appropriate. Archie and Lily would have come under the same agreement, one that doesn't exist in the US. I am not anti Harry and Meghan and I'm not pro royalty generally but I do hate how distorted things get.

I’d say the only scandal is wallpapering the ceiling in that room.
Roky Erickson, lead singer of the 13th Floor Elevators, got put in a psych ward for possessing a single joint in 1969 Austin, Texas. He was subject to electroshock “treatment” in these facilities for 4 years. His mental state deteriorated greatly over this time frame. Based on the information that is out there, it’s pretty safe to say that this incident drastically lowered his long term quality of life. He was 22 years old when he was sent to the first facility.
You're assuming that all of this happened because he had a joint on him. Even in 1969 people with a joint don't go to an asylum, they go to jail. The joint got him into the system maybe, but his mental illness led the rest of the way. Not saying his 'treatments' were okay or anything like that. Just saying it wasn't the joint, the guy had issues.

I disagree wholeheartedly that it really ended up hurting his career. The album, let’s dance Pete in the top five on billboards charts and stayed there for weeks. Three singles from the album went to number one, breaking records also. David Bowie was everywhere for nearly a decade.

I feel like the whole actors who are hated for a role they played is really a compliment. they did such a good job at that role that it stuck in people's psyche. granted, the mental fortitude of those people is up for debate, and they certainly shouldn't treat the actor badly, but I think the actor must have really done it right for this to happen

I was watching a rapper being Interviewed about his latest album and he something very wise to the effect of you can go over something 100 times with a fine tooth comb and someone will always have something mean to say about it. More often than not it then and not you.
IMHO the SLAP. If my wife had been that insulted I would be hard pressed to not slap the guy who made the insult. I agree violence isn't the answer but I understand that level of rage.
Also, several actors are hated by idiots who mistake actors for their roles. Like Dolores umbridge's or joffrey baratheon's actors. The scandal with Elongated Man's actor from arrowverse, the scandal with Hulk Hogan etc fall into the "said stupid thing in the past, got rekt many years later"
