This century was, hands down, a total circus of celeb scandals: Chris Brown's assault on Rihanna, Harvey Weinstein's sexual misconduct, Ariana Grande and her doughnut-licking incident, Taylor Swift and Kanye West's feud, Ellen Degeneres' maltreatment of employees, and about a gazillion more.

However, the media is also known for blowing things out of proportion, so today, we're going to focus solely on overhyped controversies that surrounded our beloved (or not) stars!

Most people have a hard time after a breakup, the publicity probably made hers much worse. And to be honest, Kevin never got seen that way, either because he wasn't being hounded by the press the way she was or because he simply wasn't as affected by the breakup as she was.

"Reddit, what outrage over a celebrity was way overblown?" – a netizen who goes by u/vantae-bts recently took to one of the platform's most informative and thought-provoking communities, inviting its members to share famous celeb dramas that really weren't that big of a deal. The thread garnered nearly 11K upvotes as well as 12.1K comments containing some pretty interesting answers.

Now, it's your lucky day because Bored Panda has managed to get through to the author and pose them a couple of questions!

The OP is a college student in the US who was inspired to post the question online after having a conversation with their mom about the outrage. BP then asked the web user to shoot back and answer their own question, to which they replied: “I'm thinking the Britney Spears and Madonna kiss.”

For those of you who don’t know or perhaps had not yet been born when the "scandal" occurred, u/vantae-bts is talking about the famous on-stage kiss Madonna shared with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera during the performance of one of her biggest hits, "Like a Virgin," at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards.

Due to the rather conservative views in the early noughties and the fact that public display of affection, let alone a same-sex one, was fairly uncommon on TV, the smooch sparked quite a stir and gripped the headlines for weeks!

I also remember when the women's U.S. World Cup soccer (football) team got told off for being "overly cocky" for winning. God forbid, they were told off again for asking for the more money when male players were making more than them. Why is confidence and occasional cockiness alright for men's sports but shunned in women's sports?

If there was any "blame", it would be on both of them for a lame publicity stunt. Janet's people admitted at the time that it was a planned and choreographed move. When it all kicked off, they said the issue was it was meant to pull away to reveal another layer of fabric over her breast, but during the show that section got caught on the outer one and pulled away as well. So either it was a lame attempt to get attention from both of them, or a genuine wardrobe malfunction, in which case neither should have any blame or shame

This comment seems like someone who wasn’t around or is too young to have related rewriting history. Gay meant gay back then. I know, I was very out & gay back then. Gay may have meant pervert in some places or with some people back then, as it still does today. There wasn’t some paradigm shift where everyone thought he was a pervert (most people I know thought it was sad that was the only way he could have physical connection) & now everyone feels horrible for how he was treated. To be clear, he was cruising for secs with other men in the restroom. Cottaging. Cruising. He was arrested for that. It wasn’t a random sting, but a common over-policing of an innocuous crime, albeit still a crime.) Guys are still getting arrested every day for this all over the world, because it’s typically not legal to have secs in public restrooms. The issue was how he couldn’t live his authentic self as “Yog” and still maintain his success as “George” if he were outed.

I think the major issue is that everyone is entitled to be in control of when they come out. Being baited, arrested, and having your sexuality splashed across the international media is NOT being in control of when and how you come out.

What he didn't recover from was recreational drug use. No evidence of that being related to his sexuality at all. And it didn't start when he was outed.

Actually over 25% of republicans in Louisiana blame Obama for the hurricane Katrina response! Some don't let facts stand in the way of their opinions.

Rea*an started retuning salutes and the uninitiated thought that presidents had to return salutes after that. Rea*an did serve in WWII stateside in admins functions, mostly in recruiting offices as a poster boy. the closest he got to combat was demobilizing soldiers returning stateside after they had served. He did demobilize pilots Clark Gable and James Stewart on their return. He asked for, and was granted, a non-combat, stateside posting. He spent most of his time in uniform making training films, when other actors, directors and other filmmakers actually went into combat like the aforementioned Gable and Stewart.

This even more!! I come from a military family, and I worked for US Navy & USMC for 23 years - extremely patriotic husband , family, etc. And I will attest to anyone that the way he did it was NOT disrespectful . He showed the utmost respect for.flag & national anthem, while protetsing a serious injustice. Yet all the conservatives want to speak on our behalf. KMA, he was right, he was respectful, then he was villified and run out by the NFL. M****f***ers

The ones who were upset over this never even served in the military, or if they did, they didn't understand the meaning of freedom or why they even served. My husband is a navy war veteran and he said Colin had every right to kneel. It's his right and freedom to do so and wasn't disrespectful at all. A military veteran was the one who advised him to kneel in the first place. The conservatives are the true snowflakes; they get upset over silly things. Barbie, Bud Light, Obama's brown suit, etc. But oddly enough, they seem to not get upset at all when our little children are gunned down in schools by weapons of war. They want more guns instead.

More context. Sports used to just be sports. But, then in the 1940s (WWII era), singing the anthem was added to encourage patriotism. In recent years, the military (especially the National Guard) have paid NFL teams millions of dollars for advertising and for special 'honoring events' which are really just quasi-recruitment. Showing up to play football but really being turned into a advertising tool for a US Military (and given the historic issues of how black men were over-drafted for the Vietnam War), is going to feel like a big bait and switch to many athletes.

The frothy mouthed, spittle spewing, conservatives wanted so badly to say in public, as loud as they could, that their problem with Kaepernick was that he was being an uppity ni**er. Since they couldn't do this and maintain any real level of societal respect they cycled through a few other descriptors before finally landing on Kaepernick being un-American because he disrespected the flag and soldiers. Since these frothy mouthed, spittle spewing, conservatives are so utterly f*****g stupid they can't understand that an American Citizen exercising their Constitutional rights is being patriotic and, by exercising rights that have been fought and died for, immensely respectful of the flag and Constitution. On the flip side, any American who would try to make another American cower through fear of disenfranchisement is the definition of unpatriotic and disrespectful of the flag, Constitution and the men and women who have fought for both.

    ConstantlyJon

2 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

To give a few more details here. Colin Kaepernick was an NFL Quarterback who, in the prime of his career, after having played in the Superbowl, opened a season by kneeling down on one knee during the US national anthem, which is played before every sporting event. He revealed after the game that he was protesting police brutality and racial discrimination and wanted to use his platform and influence to speak out against these things. Very quickly, conservatives in the US claimed it was disrespectful to kneel during the national anthem, saying it was disrespectful to our troops. You're "supposed" to stand with your hand over your heart or at attention in a salute, so they made it into a whole thing about that, and as other players throughout the NFL joined him, it caused it giant conflict. It was a bunch of BS, people boycotted the NFL, and eventually the NFL took action against kneeling. Eventually Kaepernick was blackballed, no team would sign him, and he hasn't played since.

Kaepernick's kneeling during the opening ceremony was a firm commitment to his beliefs. He was exceptionally brave and strong that day knowing the consequences would be devastating. I totally respect that man and his decision. He started a revolution that is still peacefully going on today and I hope it continues. There is no need to "respect the U.S" that has done so much harm deliberately.

Colin Kaepernick's first act of protest was sitting on the bench and fiddling with his helmet during the anthem, not kneeling. (Look it up. ) During the following days someone suggested to him that kneeling was a better look than pouting on the bench - or turning his back to the flag, which he was contemplating - and he was smart enough to take the advice. "The Kneel" started the following game...and the rest is history. (Whether history would be a bit different if he hadn't done the sit-in before the kneel, no one knows.)

His teacher mocked him and made him stand. My parents LOST. THEIR. SĤÎŤ. and the school's solution was to move my brother to another class. It smacks of mindless meaningless patriotism. and yes, brainwashing.

The reason she has become disliked is because of her constant griping and 'poor me' act. She has made a lot of money from the very institution she claims to despise. To be fair, it's not just her as Harry has received a lot of hate as well. They want to have their cake and eat it. They don't want to be working royals, but won't stop using their royal titles and demanded titles for their children as their 'birthright.' Archie and Lilibet were not entitled to the title of prince or princess before the Queen died due to not being directly in line to the throne, but they implied that it was purely because the children are mixed race. How can you claim you want nothing to do with an institution but at the same time keep using the name to cash in? A lot of the claims they've made have already been proven to be false and they've backtracked already on the claim that they said the royal family are racist. Their wedding cost the UK about £30 million and people lined the streets and had parties to celebrate their wedding. It's a shame because she was given a platform to make positive change for BAME people but she didn't take it and seems more intent on just being rich and famous and pushing her own agenda. She wasn't exactly a global superstar prior to marrying Harry and apart from fans of Suits noone had heard of her. The US is welcome to the both of them.

I don't really have an opinion on her or Harry but I absolutely hate the way they've been treated by the media and people in general. There's at least one newspaper that has had several stories a day about them for years, there were the disgusting things that Jeremy Clarkson said and still, it doesn't stop. They've literally been treated worse than criminals by the media and no matter what anyone thinks of them, surely they don't deserve that.

Not a lot of people cared about her race, with most people not even realising and thinking she was a bit Essex tanned. People got mad because of how she acted. I'm happy that more people are now noticing the cracks and the media have finally had enough of her.

I'll be for real, I had no idea she was mixed until she started with the racism stuff. And I believed the racism stuff could have been true (I like to see stories from all sides so didn't jump to conclusions but understood that it very well could have been true just because rich white folks absolutely do hide racism often.) After that she just started sounding more and more like my abusive narcissist ex and that's when I started disliking her. When they got married I just thought "oh cool, a beautiful American marrying a prince!" I just hate to see the people who rage hate her so badly that they'll troll the dumbest things. Like I literally saw someone making fun of her outfit being wrinkled after she got out of a car. Seriously???

I was not 'outraged'. I just felt sort of sad for her personally. It's like she felt such a need to cast off the goody two shoes Disney persona that she went overboard in the other direction. She is not the first child actor to do similar stuff. It kind of felt like Justin Bieber was in a similar mindset when he wanted to prove he was a man now and not just that cute boy tweeners were crushing on.

All I've ever tried to do is be fair and accurate about politics and make sure people know that my own personal views aren't dogmatic and I'm fully aware I could be wrong and then there they are taking advantage of that and being hypocritical as f**k. Not saying both sides aren't hypocritical, but lately I've really been noticing the right doing it more shamelessly

No she wasn't, that's the problem. It was a staged photo. "His undoing began with a photograph, which was released by a conservative talk-radio station on November 16, 2017. The image was taken in 2006, the year before Franken first ran for the Senate. At the time, he was on his seventh U.S.O. tour, entertaining American troops abroad as a comedian. The photograph captures him on a military plane, mugging for the camera as he performs a lecherous pantomime. He’s leering at the lens with his hands outstretched toward the breasts of his U.S.O. co-star, Tweeden, who is wearing a military helmet, fatigues, and a bulletproof vest. Franken’s hands appear to be practically touching her chest, and Tweeden looks to be asleep—and therefore not consenting to the joke." https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2019/07/29/the-case-of-al-franken What is concerning though, is that in the wake of it there were a lot more accusations made against him. They're also mentioned in the article I linked.

Now we can show histories of s****y behavior and choose not to support crappy people. That's welcome to free markets the hard way. This is a great example of Clickbait media manufacturing scandal. They basically take something that isn’t completely “perfect presentation”, and they submit it to the “audience” as if it were scandal. The audience then uses the echo chamber to create the scandal or conflict with opposing views. Like so many of these apparent scandalous posts on this list.

For those wondering, Kanye put out a song and music video called "Famous". The song refers to Taylor by name where he states, "I made that b**** famous." Kanye claimed that Taylor gave him permission for this. Taylor claims she did not. This came after the whole Grammy thing.

The full call record was out several years later. Taylor gave Kanye permission to use her name on the song but apparently Kanye did not tell her the full lyrics. She was not please Kanye call her 'b***h' in that song. That's what she meant by didn't give him permission: she didn't permit Kanye calling her a b***h. All in all I think Kanye/Kim did Taylor dirty in it. They pretended to extend an olive branch by creating a song about her, just to call her a b***h behind her back. I'm sure this experience among others makes her so guarded and careful now.

Recently, Kim Hongjoong (ATEEZ) said in a live that he just got his driver's license and was worried that "the fans wouldn't like it." Reason being? Apparently, according to some people, having a car makes it easier to date and the fans don't want them dating. WAKE UP, PEOPLE. Singers are only HUMAN. They can date, drive, cry, drink, or whatever the heck they like. K-pop Idols do not exist to serve your delusional fantasies. I know I am probably going to get downvoted for being harsh, but this issue sickens me and I wanted to bring this issue to light. As fans, we are there to support our idols, not to control them. I feel truly bad for K-pop idols. They have such stringent contracts that they are often referred to as “slave” contracts in Korea. The level of perfection they have to maintain is unobtainable. Sometimes they don’t even get to premier and they owe massive amounts of cash back to their producer. I highly urge fans to watch documentaries about it as it is quite sad and disturbing.

I think the issue was because the sex worker was trans and if anyone has seen delirious, we know what homophobic rant he could go on. He even went on anti-trans rants before there was any sort of visible trans activism so, the issue wasn’t the fact that he picked up a prostitute. It was because he made up a very weak excuse for why he was with a sex worker and that the sex worker was trans if he was so anti-trans and homophobic, it was the ridiculous hypocrisy. That was the issue. Edit: posted via voice dictation.

A little extra context that illustrates how stupid the whole dust-up was, from Wikipedia: “The Dean scream, was a speech delivered by Vermont governor Howard Dean on January 19, 2004 at the Val-Air Ballroom in West Des Moines, Iowa. That night, the presidential candidate had just lost the Iowa caucus to John Kerry and wanted to reassure his supporters. He listed states he would win to a raucous audience before screaming "Yeah!" Within four days, it was broadcast 633 times on national news networks and cable channels. The audio used in the airings of the scream was from Dean's unidirectional microphone, which decreased the volume of the background noise to the point where only Dean's voice was audible; this did not reflect the actual volume of the room that night, as the crowd was extremely loud.” So they soloed his damn mic and then broadcast it ad nauseum until he was dead and buried. This is wrong. It was completely legitimate to shame him for yelling once. This is the worst thing a candidate can do. It is acceptable to grab women by the pussy and incite an insurrection, but DO NOT YELL!

Michael Dukakis took a beating because he looked goofy in a military helmet. Bill Clinton had to defend not inhaling a single joint. Rick Perry made headlines for wearing glasses. Obama wore an ugly suit. The press tried to make everyone care and think these were scandals, and all the news addicted guppies just gobbled it up. Meanwhile, you-know-who gets away with truly heinous crimes and not a peep from the same people who pretended to care about that other c**p. When are we going to learn that the problem stems from the attention WE give it?

It's astounding what we used to consider "career ending"

I think that often! High school government class and talking about the "unspoken rules" to be qualified to run for president at that time... no divorces, no illegitimate kids, obviously white, white collar, but willing to do whatever necessary to separate from anything that gives any indication of clash of interest. (IE, Jimmy Carter and his peanut farm.) Nothing shocks anymore.

They isolated his hot microphone and manufactured scandal. Once it consumed media coverage it became the only coverage of Dean. No more soundbites on his policies or platform. The media made him a joke, and people fell for the joke. “Language is a virus (from outer space)” - Laurie Anderson

I always thought the public reaction/outrage over Body Count’s “Cop Killer” song was overblown and ridiculous, even if Ice-T did eventually end up pulling the song from the album

Nah, it's good if that song was frowned upon. The songs glorifying violence in real setting (not in fantasy) should not be encouraged

So what's the difference between music and movies, or video games? They're all artistic endeavors and certainly not "real" in any sense. So why do movies, games, books etc get a pass on things like violence but musicians are always vilified for the things they sing about?
