Just because something is improbable doesn’t mean that it’s impossible. We’ve seen people defy the odds countless times, whether it’s winning as an underdog or making a discovery that no one thought was possible. In fact, you’ve probably experienced some improbable things yourself. According to David J. Hall, author of The Improbability Principle, unlikely things occur every single day.

Hall even makes the claim that “extremely improbable events are commonplace.” He also points out that most people’s “intuitive grasp of probability isn’t very good.” So most of us tend to be shocked and impressed by coincidences or unlikely occurrences that actually shouldn’t surprise us at all.

Yes, they do. Mouth and smile shape are almost exactly the same. Eye shape is the same. they both have high hairlines/foreheads and their noses are the same shape. Plus, even "identical twins" are only genetically identical - that doesn't mean that they will look exactly alike forever. Environmental and other outside influences on them will change how they appear as they age. See Scott and Mark Kelly for an example - they are identical twins, but Scott Kelly spent a year in space. When he returned, he was tested and was found to literally have had changes in his gene expressions and actually grew two inches taller while in space. So, "identical twins" *can* look different from each other.

Do you believe in coincidences? People love to debate whether they exist or not, but Paul Brooks at The Guardian says that we often use this label to explain things that we can’t otherwise account for. He provides the example of a dream he had where his mother’s best friend (Rose) appeared to inform him that she had suffered a stroke and passed away.

Then, two weeks later, he found a letter from Rose’s daughter addressed to his mother informing them that Rose had actually passed away. One explanation for his dream is that the spirit of Rose came to him supernaturally and shared this information with him. The other, simpler explanation is that it was all just a coincidence.

We often love experiencing what we believe are coincidences because they just feel so unlikely. What are the chances that you met a waiter from your hometown while eating dinner at a restaurant on a random island 6,000 miles away? And what are the chances that your absolute favorite song came on the radio only minutes after you were telling your date how special it is to you? Deciding that an improbable encounter is a coincidence is much easier than trying to get to the bottom of a phenomenon.

"Excuse me, let me just scooch in here"

The fact that improbable things happen every single day can either motivate you or terrify you. On one hand, you might feel more excited about the idea of competing on a game show or buying a lottery ticket, because you know that someone has to win. On the other hand, knowing that statistically some people will get into a car accident today or be diagnosed with a terminal illness tomorrow can leave you catatonic. We have to be able to accept that random occurrences are happening constantly. Sometimes we’ll be lucky, and other times we won’t.

Now, we can’t always improve our luck. Some days are just doomed from the moment you wake up in the morning. But if you want to improve your chances of being successful when buying scratch-off tickets, Statistics How To has some tips. First, they note that it’s not all about random luck. In fact, statistician Joan Ginther has won multimillion-dollar payouts four times from scratch-offs. So some strategies can definitely help you out.

I call BS. Meteorites are red hot when striking the earth simply due to friction with the atmosphere. That's why most meteors burn up before hitting the earth and becoming meteorites. With that said, the mattress would have a charred hole in it!

This needs a banana for scale. My first thought was this was some very weird rock formation.

One of the biggest tips Statistics How To provides is buying your lottery tickets in bulk. Obviously, this is going to force you to spend more up front. But when printing cards, the company is required to make a certain percentage of them winners. For example, 250 out of every 1,000 printed might have a cash prize. So if you buy 10 of the same type of card, you’ll increase your odds of at least one of them being a winner.

Apparently, more expensive scratch-offs are also more likely to be winners. This doesn’t mean that you’ll win $500,000 at once. But bigger risks bring bigger rewards. If you can shell out $50 for one ticket, you might even have a one-in-three chance of winning that money back. But, of course, playing the lottery is always going to be a gamble. So if you want to guarantee that your money will come back to you, it might be smarter to simply invest it.

Only one in 5 births globally is by C section, and elective C sections aren't as common as you think. Unnecessary C sections (where Mom could otherwise safely give birth v*finally) can harm both the mother and baby, so hospitals don't rush to offer C sections to oodles of people as a convenience.

Iirc these kind of spines are designed to be hydrophobic (water repellant) so that dew will roll down them and water the base of the plant. They're certainly waxy to prevent water loss. Dry isn't a problem but absorbent is.

Even though it looks like the window is open along the whole bottom, only the bottom right is allowing light through unobstructed, rather than refected and diffused off the sill. This provides the point source necessary for a camera obscura.

    Nearly Blew Up My House

Isn't there some kind of lock to keep the knobs on a gas stove from being accidentally turned on? My electric stove has knobs that have to be slightly pushed in to be able to turn on the burner.

Yes, there should be, on anything even vaguely modern - it's new enough to have the digital clock, so it's new enough that the gas would not actually be on. But if you look closer the k**b is not actually turned at all anyway.

That can't happen with that cooker. I've had the same model, and to get the gas flowing to the hob requires pushing in and turning a hob control knób. Even then, if the ignition isn't pressed to light the gas, when you release the knób the gas is cut off. It has to be lit for the gas to continue flowing.

Would of thought a lot higher odds. In straight poker and five-card draw, where there are no hole cards, players are simply dealt five cards from a deck of 52. as above. The royal flush is a case of the straight flush. It can be formed 4 ways (one for each suit), giving it a probability of 0.000154% and odds of 649,739 : 1.

Surely not in Texas Holdem? It's the best 5 cards from the 5 on the board and the 2 in the pocket. The other cards are null. In this deal, the pot is split equally between all players.

My Oregon license plate is BEAR, we were driving in Southern California years ago and came up behind the California BEAR plate. We waved and pointed at the back of the car when we drove by, the other guy probably though we were insane until he saw our plate, then passed us back and waved like a maniac.

I was a smoker, I got off shift and went to my car and climbed in. Seemed nicer than I remembered. I then realized that co-worker, who had the same Buick Park Ave color, year, and all had parked near me. Hey, I was a 3rd shifter, I plead sleep deprivation.

Great thing about bowling balls is that if you find an old one you like, the holes can be redone to fit your fingers. They fill the old finger holes and drill new ones. Easy peasy, and cheaper than buying a new one

It was decades before I was born, but I was told of a local couple who had nine children; all girls. The last two were named Ada and Nina. The father was known to tell people that they ran out of names so they started numbering them.

When the temperature is very close to zero the liquid can freeze instantly by changing the pressure just a little bit, like opening the can or pressing on it. Because of the anomaly of water it expanses while freezing causing the can to pop :)

This is good to know. I once witnessed this happen with a freezer pop (one of those liquid-filled tube sweet frozen snacks), it turned from liquid to frozen right before my eyes when I touched it (in the freezer), I barely believed my eyes!
